Ever since I re-discovered this magnificent piece of music, here in TH-cam, I keep on returning to this channel to listen to this wonderful symphony over and over again. Perhaps because I frequently listened to this symphony during my youth... Perhaps because every single note profoundly touches my heart... Perhaps because I empathize so much with the composer's tragic life... OR Perhaps because Schubert was also the favorite composer of Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (a historical entity whom I greatly admire)... Whatever the reason behind my profound attachment to Schubert's work - especially his first two symphonies - there is no question that this brilliant contributor to the tradition of Western classical music should be considered the greatest composer of the Nineteenth Century, and one of the best artists that has ever lived!
Amazing, what a talent!!! I am in quarantine for 14 days alone in Italy (yes could be worse!) and this music is just amazing to listen to. Thanks for posting it!!
Thanks for posting this symphony and for introducing me to this orchestra and conductor, who I hadn't previously encountered. I've also now listened to their equally good performance of Schubert's 4th symphony on TH-cam and look forward to hearing others. It seems that Halasz was over 70 years old when he made these recordings, yet they capture all of Schubert's zest and youthful energy. I wonder if some of the musicians also play in the Budapest Festival Orchestra with another great modern Hungarian conductor, Ivan Fischer, who has impressed me even since I saw him on TV winning a conducting competition in the 1970s. Musical life is well and truly flourishing in Budapest!

Am I the only one whose favorite work of this symphony is the third movement? That is such a dramatic piece, I love it. (The rest is of course a masterwork as well)
Splendid performance! Hats off to our friends in Budapest! This is the level of accuracy required; light but strong, emphatic but never overt. All the phrases and emblematic passages are handled deftly by all the players. One can only imagine what this young man was up to in 1815 while taking this down from God. You know that much of this was cribbed from Joseph Haydn, which is perfectly fine in my view. More modern orchestrators should try more from the same orchestral pallet. Best.

@@FreakieFan No, Schubert was largely unknown in his lifetime except among his circle of close friends in Vienna. Many of his greatest works were published posthumously. We have Mendelssohn, George Grove and others to thank for tracking them down. The early symphonies (1-6) were written in his teens and he did get a chance to hear them played by their amateur orchestra at least. It seems he never heard the Unfinished or the Great C Major at all!
I like the picture, but it has a glaring fault! The lady in the swing is too far from the ground for that man on the right to push her. Also, she is too high up even to get into the swing. However, it is pretty

TheDiasneb This work, admittedly early in the composer's career, does use features of Mozart's and Haydn's styles, but would never be confused with a work of theirs. He was already finding his own path, and don't forget, by the time he wrote this work, he had already heard many works of Beethoven. This particular symphony remains my favorite of Schubert's early six, as a totality. I could point out the ineffably beautiful slow movements of Nos. 4 and 5, but as a complete work, this one impresses me the most, for its essentially self-assured nature. I even prefer this work to the "Great" C Major, which over the years. I've drawn more and more away from. The Unfinished and the Grand Duo symphonies are another matter. As for the presentation, aside from the very poor sound, I will say that I like that the conductor observes all repeats in the slow movement - in the minuet they must all be observed anyway. In the two outer movements, though marked, they are really unnecessary, as the respective exposition sections are quite concentrated and lengthy to begin with. I have issues with tempos. The slow movement needs to be taken far more lyrically, and not as a superficial and casual run through. And the main section of the minuet needs to be slowed down somewhat to bring it closer in tempo with that of the trio, which does work here. There should not be this sharp change of tempo between the two sections. To the poster: you might mention that the minuet movement is a direct development of the material from the slow movement, both in its main section and trio. And I wouldn't quite dismiss the last movement as a gallop and leave it at that. It is clearly constructed on lines very similar to the first movement, with extended, double prong second theme group sections. I do not believe that Schubert ever returned to this structure, certainly not in his symphonies. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

For me as a layman, this is not inferior to Paganini, Mozart or Beethoven.
Schubert was so much better than Paganini in every regard (except violinistic virtuosity of course)

Schubert ha unito Classicismo a Romanticismo,poco dopo Mozart e questa splendida sinfonia ne è un ottimo esemplare.
