    100%. I believe that jiu-jitsu players learning takedowns would be far better served focusing on learning this single leg finish (staying low) than trying to come up with the single to their feet and trying to finish by running the pipe, tree-topper, club&trip, etc. Some reasons include:
    -As beginners with limited amount of time to practice takedowns, they are going to be in this grounded/dogfight/whizzer position far more often than they are going to successfully pick up the single to standing vs. a resisting opponent.
    -One of the go-to counters to the single leg in BJJ is the kimura trap. Finishing this way almost eliminates that danger. It also negates sumi gaeshi, kani basami, guard pulls, diving for the legs, etc.
    -As you noted, practicing this finish serves double duty. It's a great takedown finish, but it's also a primary finish for the halfguard/wrestle up/dogfight scenario. So you're maximizing your technique's usefulness.
    -Successfully finishing the single leg from the feet usually ends up in guard of some sort. Successfully finishing the single leg shown here usually ends in back or side control (or at worst turtle)--I know what I'd rather have.
    Yes, there's a place for coming up with the single and finishing from your feet, but I say BJJers should start with the low finish.

    • @josephbreza-grappling9459
      @josephbreza-grappling9459  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      High level wrestlers will also tell you that if you can finish low then you should. It substantially reduces the scramble. “Chop the tree down low” is what they say. John Smith and Jordan Burroughs made incredibly successful careers finishing low. If he is using a shin whizzer then you have to bring it up. I plan on showing that soon. And if you get a single from the feet, you definitely finish at the mid of high level. I believe that once people get better control, they will have success from all sorts of finishes, but yes this is a golden staple

      @@josephbreza-grappling9459 This was my problem for a while. I would shoot the sweep single expecting them to sprawl but sometimes they would still be up. Because they were so high and I was so low, they'd be able to put their weight into me and start initiating their counters (e.g. rubber knee). Took me to long to realize that if they stay up instead of sprawling, I have to come up with them.

    • @josephbreza-grappling9459
      @josephbreza-grappling9459  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @nelson1954 yes, my college coaches used to say that the goal is to always come up. Of course he might not let you and that’s when you have to finish low. I would rather finish low, because when you bring up the leg, he can dive under and then you get into a leg entanglement (yes we have those in wrestling too). Then it’s a stalemate and all for nothing. So if I can keep cutting and angle and finish, then I am going to end up in good position without a scramble. Watch my videos on the peak out, cut back, and how to recover from a stuffed shot

      I think they call that the slingy in wrestling. I don’t like coaching my guys to do anything risky, because I have seen too many do stupid shit and lose. When you do that, his hips are under yours with that whizzer, and when people tried that shit on me, I would elevate my hips and get their far arm. I would then end up in a head and arm position (kesa getame). I don’t lose that position once I get it.
      The main reason I coach with low risk-high reward was that my objective was to always produce state champions so they could get collegiate wrestling scholarships. The fundamentals win titles. Even so fundamental as just keeping a great stance with 30s on the clock to keep your lead and win the match

      Anytime they try to step over your back, raise your hips up high. You’ll start to predict how they fall and end up in a good position. Some people try to step over when they have the overhook from that position and it is even worse if I am on their waist.
      But now you can see why I like to shut all that shit down by dropping below the waist to the single. Now he has no mobility anymore. And I can get to the back by wrapping up both legs and crawling up. Lots of times they try to turn into me, but I can wedge up their back/hips with my knee and prevent that from happening. Get the gift wrap or two on one and take the back. It’s far more reliable. Take his power away by controlling his hips and legs. Come up around the waist or shoulder line and his hips and legs are free to move and that’s where all the attacks/mobility originates

    Is there a danger of them rolling for a leg lock?

    • @josephbreza-grappling9459
      @josephbreza-grappling9459  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If you come up to the waist and into the dogfight, yes. If you stay low on the legs smash both legs together and put his hips on the mat, how can he? Most people make the mistake of making space and abandoning the legs for the waist. That allows him to use his legs to build height and then roll through for a knee bar. While everything has a risk and a counter, this substantially minimizes the risk and counters.

      Watch my video on kesa getame. If you understand that position, it is brutal for them. Most people who haven’t wrestled or done judo don’t have a good one. In wrestling you get damn good at it, because people are slippery and fight like hell to get out of there. The escapes to the back are identical in wrestling and Jiu Jitsu. There’s nothing new. He must be on his side and get his elbow back. So you control his elbow and put him flat on his back like I show in that video

  • @velebrz
    @velebrz ปีที่แล้ว +1

    amazing video Joseph. This falls directly into my game. Ive been using half guard offensively for 10+ years, and Ive been coming up on top of the leg instead of the body exactly as you mention. What happens though, especially with people who Ive swept many times like that, is that when I get to the dogfight with the leg, they stand up. Which isnt the end of the world, I can still finish a single leg, but I was wondering if you have any advice on how to prevent them standing up, when you do get to the dogfight position with the leg AND the leg trapped - Im mostly coming there from popping up from half guard

    • @josephbreza-grappling9459
      @josephbreza-grappling9459  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That’s awesome. If you circle to his back and shelf the leg, he won’t be able to stand up. On video 39, I go into more detail and have better angles on how I windshield wiper his knee out. He can’t stand up because his knee is twisting his hip.
      th-cam.com/video/-Hsd-2le-PQ/w-d-xo.html
      If he stand up before that, you could do what we called “the navy” where you keep that leg you’ve stepped over and do a bicep curl on his far leg. It will put you on top of his leg and you can knee bar or go to side control. Would you like for me to show that?

      Twist that leg on the shelf out and his hips will turn, which gives you access to the far leg. Other option is to chase around the back to the far leg. I like this option less, because he goes to both knees instead of the far hip. I show that twisting of the leg/hip more on the dogfight video
      th-cam.com/video/-Hsd-2le-PQ/w-d-xo.html
      The other option is to cut back. Use your head on the inside of his ribs to drive backwards and he will fall to his back, because nothing over there is stopping him

      Just an idea for a video that I will think would be very valuable : what do you like to do in a dump/crackdown position in submission grappling? I feel like I go to hit dumps/run the pipe a lot against jiu jitsu guys when they look to square up on a single leg, or even a lot of times from kneeling single leg coming up from half guard.
      But in jiu jitsu a lot of people will grab guillotines/kimuras/100% sweep/neck crank and its a real problem especially with the back exposure. Would love to know how you like to deal with that position if you have the time.

      If they are posting on your head, they have no whizzer. Just drop your hip and keep circling. It’s your entire body against their arm. I am not sure what you mean about a figure-4 nelson. Sometimes people use the same word for several things…unless you mean the Kimura. In that case, it’s a race to get to the corner, and turn that knee out. Once you are there, you are safe, because his body will turn away from you as you twist that knee out. Keep that far elbow in tight and they won’t ever get the kimura in the first place. But yeah, you’ve got to respect it

      @K x P keep circling to the far leg. The angle will help you to shelf his leg better. That’s what’s happening…you’re losing the knee when he puts his weight back. Your coach telling you to stand up isn’t bad advice, but I would first try to circle to the far leg and understand he has no offense from there. You’re 90% to the takedown.
      You look really good too. Your snatch on that single is awesome. It’s the battle of you getting control over his knee and him trying to prevent you from controlling it. If you “windshield wiper his foot out” like I show in #39, you will be able to regain momentum. His hip will turn and take some of the weight off of you. You look great though man! Keep it up!

    Here Gable abandons a single leg to go around to the back. The commentary says some high level guys prefer this. Can you put this in context with your comments for a guy who has only wrestled for a few weeks.

    • @josephbreza-grappling9459
      @josephbreza-grappling9459  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Foremost, although this guy does a decent job, there are so many of these breakdown guys who never wrestled at all, like DPS, or wrestled very little.
      There’s a few things to keep in mind. Number one, these guys are 285lbs. Coming up to the waist is not nearly as big of an issue. They aren’t nearly as threatening with hari goshi, uchi mata, or makikomi as a little guy. Sweeping 285lbs off the floor is much slower and with shoes on and on a wrestling mat, that makes a difference. Also, in Freestyle, if someone has a legitimate bodylock, then you better have damn confidence in your inside hip counters (the aforementioned throws) because he can suplex the shit out of you from there. I show this on #25. The reason I tell people not to do it, is because the rules for high school wrestling and most BJJ tournaments don’t allow for one to suplex. So, then you’re stuck in this situation where you better mat return quickly or else you are going to get uchi mata’ed or hari goshi to your back. So, in international style, bailing to your stomach and then breaking his grip with your own ribs (I’ll cover this) is the best option. You better make that decision quickly and forcefully, because otherwise he will catch you trying to bail out and your ass is going for a ride you didn’t sign up for

    • @josephbreza-grappling9459
      @josephbreza-grappling9459  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Actually he followed up with me. He did wrestle. He wrestled for Lehigh. I corrected him and said it’s not “running the pike” but “running the pipe.” He told me he says “running the pike” because with a room full of kids he doesn’t want to say “pipe.” I laughed and said I totally get it and coached kids for over 20 years…but if those kids snickered when I said “running the pipe” I would probably say “guys there’s a difference between running pipe and laying pipe.” However these days, I’d probably get cancelled over that. I can’t coach full time anymore because I just don’t get out of work at a reasonable time.
      So it does explain why he talk’s through the moves well and the reasons for them. Unlike a lot of these keyboard wrestlers who just literally point out what you can already see but try to be the authority on wrestling with no actual experience. You’ve got to be careful to who you listen to out there. Lots of posers
