I noticed I was hitting shots/takedowns a lot better on the younger guys than the older guys at the gym but couldn’t figure out why - seemed like it should be the opposite. But now I get it, the older guys weren’t pushing back in as much as the younger guys and I’ve been trying to force the shot letting them catch me out of position. Thanks for the tips! Great stuff. Used it in practice the other day. Very good, just like the other instructional. Btw in the first instructional you showed single leg defences, but as far as I know you didn't talk about the position, when you are under him and while you are in the position, they grab your upper leg (butt), idk how to better describe it, but used often. Then they have quite some control. It's hard to defend that because your arms are on his legs and he kind of grabs from behind. They can throw from there.

I want my guys to be able to wrestle against good wrestlers. Anything less is selling them short In terms of granbys, I learned all of that at the granby school of wrestling back in 1996. I've been banging out reps of this stand up in my room and noticed how the foot being diagonal from the ankle gives me balance and power for giving me extra center gravity. Hey Joe. I recently got to ask Brandon Reed why he doesn't pinch his legs with his single leg. He said that doing so puts him more at risk for a leg scissor/kani basami. Brandon's legit (as you know), so I just wanted to know your opinion on the matter. Do you still pinch your knees with the single leg in Jiu-Jitsu?

    • @josephbreza-grappling9459
      @josephbreza-grappling9459 18 วันที่ผ่านมา

      If you don’t have your ear on the chest and you don’t circle to the front, then you are at risk for kani basami. I try to keep my forehead in the ribs and circle front. I don’t stay in a position for any length of time at all. The pinching of the leg is the way we teach kids to get their leg into position to shelf it across the thigh for when I lift. If you watch how I do it to Jordan on the instructional in fast motion (which is on my instagram I believe) the entire time from shot to finish on the ground is like 1.5s

And if you take the other precautions you mentioned, kani basami isn't as big a risk. Am I understanding correctly? Also, I thought you were supposed to stay on the side in a single leg- sounds like you're saying to put pressure with your head and circle to face them. Hopefully I interpreted that correctly! Appreciate you. I'll look for that video.

      @@Mattchew2232 the first move off the single is running the pipe. The second if he doesn’t go down is to lift and trip. Your head should always be in his ribs when you come up off the single. Ear on the chest is what turns you sideways and gets you uchi mata’ed. You don’t push once you are up to both feet. You pull but circling to the front and that is the same motion of running the pipe. I guess if he can do it, then that means that everyone else can/should? The issue with watching the elite is that people without much wrestling experience think they can shortcut what it takes to emulate what they are doing at that level. I would argue that the people with breakdown channels have done more harm than good, because they take examples of freak elites doing things. Most with breakdown channels never wrestled. As far as I know, only Earn Your Gold wrestled. The biggest names are not wrestlers. They are wrestling fans who wrestle with their mouths. The reason in wrestling that we are taught to do the inside trip on the overhook side is because it traps his weight on that foot so that when you drop, he doesn’t step out and now have you in a compromised position. In judo, I do an inside trip on the underhook side, but the mechanics are totally different and I can put weight on it by holding the gi. In judo, you catch the foot on its way forward and prevent it from ever touching the ground. This takes a lot of time to master. I have a long history of getting people who never wrestled to the state podium in a short time. Those who shut up and listen get on the podium. Those who point out the few caveats are what we call “gentlemen wrestlers.” They know everything but can’t make the team. They become the breakdown guys who know everything but can’t do anything in real life.

      Yes, I did a video with Jordan Preisinger for an ad for wrestlingforbjj.com and covered this topic. I don’t do it exactly like everyone else does, and I think this works better. Hopefully that will be out soon. Timing, level change, push/pull. These are concepts in wrestling that work from every position. The problem I see in a lot of the BJJ guys I coach is they have none of those. This is common with highschool wrestlers too, but with good coaching, you get them to focus on how to set these things up. You can’t just try your best push off a collar tie. Not only is that just going to put you in bad position, it just doesn’t work

      Thanks man! Yes this is actually meant to be revisited over and over. One of the biggest issues with teaching people these days is that they always want something new. I don’t even think they care how effective it is. It’s the fetish of knowing more moves. But in my experience that isn’t what wins matches. Do you need to know 10 mount escapes or like 1 that’s your go to and 1 more if that’s not working? I would say it’s best to be amazing at one than kinda ok at 10. Same goes from a lot of positions. Being effective in every one of those positions is what will carry you forward. The amount of bullshit out there is scary. I refuse to be part of it. I am showing you all what made me a successful wrestler and even as an old ass broken man, what keeps me being successful in BJJ. It’s all the same, just different rule sets for scoring and that changes the strategy. For example in judo, I am not going to try to submit my opponent from side control or mount, because the rules let you win by pin. When the pin (osaekomi) is on, I am a fool if I let him get any space because I want to submit him. This is why in judo, you see arm bars and chokes from the back, not mount, because that’s not playing to the strength of the rule set

      Thank you! The fundamentals done well are what wins matches. You can and should always work on being an absolute master of the fundamentals. I am still not a master-it’s a lifelong process I have a love/hate relationship with the internet’s excessive access to information, because I feel a lot of it is misleading. Fancy highlight reels are what gets views and it’s not realistic. Nine times out of ten, the execution of the fundamentals are going to be what wins matches. And so the viewers don’t get an accurate representation of what wrestling really is. They ought to attend highschool and/or college wrestling tournaments to get more exposure to actual wrestling. They will then see why I teach what I teach

      @@jamesr2936 thank you man! Yeah, 100%, position is super super important. It’s one of the reasons I don’t like my wrestlers or BJJ guys abandoning the single leg for the bodylock, because you were in excellent position and taking away one of his powerful legs. Now you’re often reaching and out of position during the transition and giving him the ability to get his lift with the inside leg and use the overhook to break your posture. Most of the system I teach is from what I learned from my collegiate wrestling coaches. If you’re a greco guy, and have some years, then you probably heard of my collegiate coach, Andy Seras, who was the USA Greco coach for the world and Olympic teams. I learned a lot from him. My head coach, Brian Reardon, was also a master technician and strategist

I saw that the biggest hole in my game was my stand up skills with the Gi on. So I heard through the grapevine that the University I work at had some incredible judokas. That is when I started working with them. Now it is what I do for the vast majority of my training. It was a good move too. They are not all egocentric. They don’t “own” me-in fact my coach encouraged me to work with Jordan Preisinger and see whether he was comfortable with belt testing me. We do newaza under BJJ rules at the university judo club, but we do a A LOT of stand up judo too. I am learning super fast, because they are such good instructors. I know this sounds crazy, but I generally think defense is more important than anything in wrestling. It's not just single leg defense like this, it's whizzers, sprawls, scrambling, etc. You wonder why a guy like Seth gross became an ncaa champion with barely any offense, it's because his defense was so stingy and tenacious. Thanks again!

      It is extremely important, but more points are scored offensively. Seth is hard to score on and that works for him, Fix, and a few others. But by in large offensive wrestling always the best option for producing champions

I didn't realize the explosiveness of this move until I saw you do the same technique on this video. I'd like to see you do all the moves in the future at full speed at the end of the segment. Thank you for supporting me brother! Yeah we recorded a lot of live speed takedowns and I believe granbys. The thing about the low and slow stand up is that it works well. It’s about control. If you lose the hand control you need to get it back and then work to get out. People who just stand up without hand control will get frickin slammed.

    Do you know why it seems like the side bodylock works better in freestyle wrestling? I've seen wrestlers like Kyle Dake get away with it and slam the guy from side bodylock without giving them a chance to counter. Is it just because most freestyle wrestlers don't train judo counters?

    • @josephbreza-grappling9459
      @josephbreza-grappling9459 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I have covered this, so last time I address this question, lol. I made a video on it with Jordan Preisinger and he posted it on his page. In short, people in freestyle aren’t doing it the way people in BJJ are. They aren’t running people across the mat when they have inside hip position. This is something I and others learned when I was like 13. You get to the waist and stop fucking pushing. Pushing makes your chest get way out of alignment with your knees and now you are out of your stance and extended. When it’s done properly, you pull the guy into your lap. The internet broke when I first said to avoid transitioning from the single to the bodylock, because you’re likely going to keep pushing and get thrown. Kyle puts the breaks on and he denies them inside hip position. He pulls them and suplexes. Look at my video with Jordan. I show it there. It’s not a judo counter. It’s common to wrestling and judo. In wrestling it’s called a whizzer kick. If you watch highschool wrestling then you would see it’s extremely common. The reddit commenters are so surprised that I “predicted it,” but that’s because the level of wrestling is highschool JV and you’ll see it 50x in a tournament People in BJJ would be well off watching highschool wrestling. People in BJJ with zero wrestling background want to watch the Olympians and then try to emulate what they are doing. This is akin to trial week white belts trying to roll like the Miyao brothers

    I’ve always found underhook to be very tough to convert to any meaningful offense, I’m taller than most of my training partners so I feel like I have to get so low… On the ground it’s different, but standing sparring I get whizzered all to hell😂😂😂

    • @josephbreza-grappling9459
      @josephbreza-grappling9459 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Probably leaning into them instead of lowering your level with your legs. Probably also giving up head and hip position. Watch greco and you will see they never lean but squat lower and use what I showed on my instructional with Jordan and a recent YT video. If you are taller, you should be destroying everyone with underhooks. You have tremendous leverage to lift them with your legs under their hips and take all their power away. You should also have a much easier time dominating the push pull and snap which will make their elbows flare from their side and you dig the underhook. Set ups aren’t taught at all or at an incredibly low level in bjj. It’s imperative that I make you give it to me rather than me telegraphing every aspect of it while not winning the battle of head and hip position

    Awesome analysis! What made you choose Judo competition over something like Nogi submission grappling? Do you just want to work on those skills of taking the opponent down in Judo ruleset for now and not rush into everything else (ie. guard passing, defending legs, pinning/submitting) ?

    • @josephbreza-grappling9459
      @josephbreza-grappling9459 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I wrestled for so long that I am kinda over the slippery game. I want to learn how to deal with the jacket, because it’s so technical. You can’t just slip out of shit and use athleticism to be faster and stronger. The rabbit hole of jacket wrestling is just so deep. I also like the rules more. If I throw you and you land on your side, I can pin you and win that way. Or, if you turn to turtle, I can either turn and pin you or try to submit. The former is more likely. If you don’t have a choke or armbar right away they call it back to the feet. So sort of like freestyle wrestling in that if nothing is happening it goes back to the feet. I absolutely love doing BJJ for the exercise and mental part. But I think there are too many issues with how scoring and out of bounds works. I am not that motivated to play a game where someone could pull guard and hold you there for dear life and get an advantage or something. If they hold you in side control at least that is a dominant position. I am just very in to judo. I also think I am catching on super fast because my coaches are awesome and are helping me to mold my game with my wrestling skills. I actually have good guard passing and guard retention/sweeps. I love BJJ. I just think BJJ in the gym and competition are not the same things. But judo is basically the same…like you can’t just grab someone’s gi and play anti judo like you can play anti BJJ. You will get shido’ed off the mat. In BJJ, they really need to enforce stalling and call stalemates for positions with no progress

    Thank you for making these videos. For me, your work lifted the facade of poor state of teaching stand up position in no gi grappling. Prime example is Meregali vs Pixley. Even someone as talented and intelligent as Danaher, can't break down the no gi stand up position to distill to his student in a way that will work on a skillful resisting opponent. I do think you're right that someone who hasn't done wrestling at the highest level, may not be able to teach it to others from simply observing others wrestle even if it's tape at the highest level. I don't think Danaher would be such a great ground grappling coach if he hasn't actually performed at the highest level at Renzo's against all kinds of killers in that blue basement for decades which was the highest level of ground grappling at that time. As for your work, again, thank you. I bought your instructional wrestlingforbjj, and I can already tell the little details from your actual personal experience of wrestling at high level that I hope to learn with help me take down my partners and/or stay safe in standing position. I hope you continue being active in the grappling scene for a long time. I like listening to your perspective.

      Thank you for your kind words and your support. I am sure that our instructional will serve you well. We spent a lot of time making sure that the concepts were emphasized. My plan is to continue to teach wrestling to BJJ guys, because I feel that once they see the power of the fundamentals done well that they will strive to be proficient in them. The problem with a lot of people is they think oh this is what olympians do and so that’s what I should do. No, you should wrestle like a highschool wrestler and then like a college wrestler if you get that good. The other issue is that people rely on these fucking breakdown guys and the vast majority of them never wrestled. They show what will get them views, not what is fundamental and used at all levels. Highlight reels don’t tell the real story of what is happening. You have to attend tournaments and watch this shit in person. You will see that whizzer counter to the side bodylock like 30-50x in a highschool tournament. You will see it less in college because people aren’t foolish and stop pushing if they are around the waist. I never taught BJJ mechanics on the channel, because my expertise is in wrestling. But the issue is these BJJ people know that the $ is in takedowns so they will lie on their resume to get you to buy their shit. And then you will get frustrated that your wrestling isn’t working and go back to pulling guard. Guard pulling is ok when it benefits you. Meregali should have just kept playing guard against Pixley, because Pixley would have been penalized for not engaging and then Meregali could have played guard and advanced his position. Wrestling Pixley was foolish. I would pull guard against Pixley, lol
