- This is the world record for Final Fantasy Tactics NA Any%, completed in 4 hours, 8 minutes, and 12 seconds, on June 6th, 2013. This was played on a PS2 with Fast Disc Speed set. This is the fastest completion of the US version of Final Fantasy Tactics ever done, even beating out the segmented run on SDA by over 15 minutes. This run was the product of over 6 months of streaming and doing attempts on my Twitch channel ( / theclaude , before finally getting a run I was happy with. It took 251 attempts to get this run, with a vast majority of those attempts failing due to having insufficient starting stats.
This run is similar to previous speedruns of FFT in that it involves a large amount of early game grinding to unlock Math Skill, followed by nuking the field to quickly kill all enemies. However, because this was done in an RTA setting, this isn't as easy as you would initially think. There is a chance enemies may survive if they have low faith and bad / worst compatibility, or they can simply flat-out dodge non-Holy spells. This results in having to use extra turns of math in order to complete the fight, which not only wastes time, but requires the use of improvised math in order to target the remaining units. 14 extra math skill turns were needed in this run, which is quite high - however, this was more than made up for by the extremely low amount of random encounters I got, only getting 5 throughout the entire run.
Timing begins at "New Game", and ends when the height symbol disappears upon Altima II's demise, signaling the resolution of the final unit's turn (a.k.a., the last meaningful player action).

Overall, I am very satisfied with this run. It can definitely be improved by getting slightly better luck (mostly in Chapter 2), but I feel like my execution was top-notch throughout most of the run. While this could theoretically be pushed as low as 4:05:XX, I don't see sub 4 hours happening in a real-time run. I'd like to see someone try, though!

Amazing speed-run. I've been looking for a game to start running, and I'm thinking this might be the game. Great job dood!
Seriously give the guy some respect. Any player of FFT on psx knows about those glitches and every speed runner knows that glitching is NOT the same as cheating. Go look at Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time. World Record for this game is 20 minutes and it is meant to be over 6 hours of game play not including side quests.
I'm pretty sure the 4 comments stating that Claude is cheating are just people who are jealous that it took longer for them to reach chapter 2 than for Claude to beat the entire game. ^-^ I still use some of the exploits Claude does and it still takes me forever to beat the game. Good job Claude!
This is skill. Add more or less 2 hours for a glitchless speedrun.
I remember first playing the game and being fascinated by the thought of all the other job classes. My friend had the strategy guide and I thought the art style and look of the world and classes were so amazing. I stayed in Mandalia Plains and wouldn't leave until I had people as Dragoons, Samurai, and NInjas. Didn't help much since the weapons weren't available to me but I didn't care. And I didn't understand yet how amazing calculators were til many years later so always thought they were stupid.
TheClaude, can you upload your best FFT any% no math run? Twitch isn't working for me for whatever reason. I would greatly appreciate it!
I seriously don't think people understand that speedrunning uses glitches, that in speedruns it's not considered cheating.
And even if it is, in this case it doesn't matter. It still takes skills and time to set up an entire run based around that. Remembering to set up everything perfectly and practice navigating through the menus fast and picking the right skill each time cause 1 slip up can cause you to lose minutes and not be as fast as you could have been.
I think people have it in their head that if you use a glitch you just made the speed run really easy and takes no skills. Which is far from the truth.
And the math involved in using the damn calculator class
I would love to see what a Glitchless run of this would be. It would probably be about 6-7 hours seeing as you would have to legitimately grind for JPs.

You can use glitches to do speed runs, this just isn't considered a "full" speedrun.
Having said that though, I was interested to see how you could one on one Weigraf on a speedrun. To this day it's one of the biggest leaps in game difficulty for me if you don't know it's coming!

I used to use accumulate for a couple of hours within the first 10 battles or so and have a team of 4 as lv99 monks with some other abilities. I think i would use calculate and haste. Anyway, monks are awesome and i would crush the game. The only draw back is that the animals would be lv99 too.
Then you can spend twice that amount of time with de-leveling traps and invited mind flayers to level back down as a chemist and optimize low level stats! YEAH

Doosh McDooberson Jobs have different stat growth rates and totals. You can "level down" using certain trap tiles, or an ability that invited Mindflayers have. Chemists have unusually awful stat growth. So you can level up in something good (monk, ninja, bmage) and down in something bad (chemist, mime) and back up in something good and end up much more powerful at a given level than is normally possible. There is a detailed FAQ for this process. Takes ages though and is probably only good if you really, really hate your career and have already quit WoW.

I know this comment is 2 years old but I just wanted to say.
Even if you did this glitch and followed the setup you couldn't finish this game that fast, it'd take you a long time practicing to navigate the menus that fast and remembering every set up perfectly because 1 fuck up can lose minutes.

What? He has played this enough to know where to scroll to and what hits what he wants. I don't see how that makes this fake. Hell in dark souls I can switch my entire armor set within 5-10 seconds if I know what slot my desired armor is in. It's all about muscle memory, after you get it down navigating menus is fast and easy to the point you don't even need to think about it.
Claude, you're cheating to get all the skills right after the first battle.

Technically it's not considered as a cheat because it's a bug that is part of the game and those aren't caused by added codes (GameShark/ActionReplay). In short if you play the game without any device help like the 2 i mentioned above it's not cheating, it's just taking advantage of an existing bug into the game that was present all along.
Most speedruns i watched so far are done that way - the player takes advantage of existing bugs. Dark Souls, Resident Evil 4 and many other speed runs i've seen so far use that kind of tricks to complete a game and for me it's not cheating since it's just using bugs of the game at our advantage.
Then what's the point? Knowledge of bugs doesn't prove any kind of skill.
skills? speed runs aren't about skills, there are about speed. Don't tell me you'd won't use any bug or glitch present in a game to your advantage if you are trying to complete the game as fast as you can.
In FFT skills doesn't matter if you don't have a planned strategy and that's exactly what Claude did. He had a strategy ready for that game and he used it properly. Nothing wrong with that. Even the most purist RPG players are exploiting such glitches to their advantage so there is no point trying to be more holy than the Pope(that's an old saying where i live lol)
