Final Fantasy Tactics Any% Speedrun in

- This is a single segment (RTA) speedrun of the North American version of Final Fantasy Tactics, completed in 3 hours, 58 minutes, and 26 seconds. The game was played on a PS2 90001 with Fast Disc Speed set, and originally completed on January 19th, 2015. This run aims for fastest possible completion.
This is an update to my 4-08-12, located here: • Final Fantasy Tactics ... . An almost 10 minute improvement, this run contains many strategy optimizations compared to the 4-08, in addition to better luck. I honestly never thought sub-4 would be achieved,, but I'd like to give a big shoutout to fellow runner eLmaGus, who pushed me to try for it (in addition to being the first one to actually get it).
There are too many optimizations to fully list, but to cover the basics:
Overall:
- Further optimized all the grind battles
- Optimized camera rotations (the camera automatically rotates to show a unit if he's not visible, and this can be avoided by rotating it yourself manually during enemy turns, or during the movement of your own units)
- Optimized camera zoom-outs (zooming out the camera for every battle is almost always faster)
- Optimized cursor movements (nothing major, but some fights use different Math combinations to save a few frames)
- All instances of Float are removed unless required for consistency (It wastes 2 - 3 seconds at the start of the battle if any unit has Float equipped)
Per battle:
- Gariland Magic City: Better starting formation which allows for a consistently faster fight, as well as greater odds of being able to kill the front Squire via Throw Stone usage
- Golgorand Execution Site: Flare is used instead of Holy, which is faster even in average cast scenarios. The exception is if Gafgarion evades (causing a long dialogue sequence)
- Underground Book Storage 2nd Floor: Flare is again used instead of Holy. Setting Float on Ramza allows for a quick backup strat regardless of enemy actions, so long as the Time Mages don't survive
- Bed Desert: Skipped taking Rafa as a dummy unit. Mustadio with an Angel Ring accomplishes the same thing. (Starting formation is important in this fight, or else Balk's poison overrides the Reraise)
- Bethla Sluice: Haste 2 is used instead of Haste. This is a few seconds slower, but Haste 2 has 100% accuracy and improves consistency in this fight (shoutouts to cha0s for pointing out this spell exists)
- Outside Limberry Castle: Flare is used instead of Holy. Unfortunately in this run, Lede evades the spell, so I end up losing time and am forced to use a back-up strategy
- Altima: Cleaned up the strategy in this fight to only use Ramza & Orlandu (Meliadoul is no longer needed)

Overall, the execution & decision making in this run was very good. The luck was also superb for the entirety of Ch. 1 -3, but less than ideal in Ch. 4. I got quite a few random encounters in Ch. 4, in addition to a poor Orlandu. Nonetheless, I'm pretty satisfied with this run... even though it took me about 10 months to upload it to TH-cam. (which coincidentally, is the same number of random encounters I got).
Improvements that can be made to this run (outside of better luck):
- A better text mashing technique was discovered for Orbonne, that applies until you set options during Ramza's first turn. By holding O and mashing X, it simulates the effects of Fast text speed, saving ~5 seconds.
- A better Math combination is possible in Araguay Woods (HeightPrimeBolt3), which accomplishes the same thing as CT3Bolt3, but spares the Bolt 3 animation on Boco.
- CT3Flare can likely be used at Outside Murond without major repercussions (in an average case scenario).
I'd say the best theoretical time for this category would be a 3:55:XX, which would involve quite a bit of grinding. It's unlikely I will ever try to achieve this time, as I'm pretty happy with sub-4.

I struggled with this game for a long time. Thanks to your strat I completed my first play through. And I must say it was very satisfying lol.
This is GDQ material. Using the right glitches in the right way, and crazy menu-ing. Really enjoying this.
The menuing is cool. Claude is trying to get the no math version of this into AGDQ, because its a more interesting run and its only 30 minutes longer. He has a commentary video for this on his YT channel, its really good. Mike Uyama has stated more or less formally, at least once why he is not in favour of featuring it, but it still seems like he has a personal grudge, when you consider all of the junk games that have made it over the years.
Also Claude is a great commentator, really funny guy, runs some really hard games very well, and his gang of speedrunners are all pretty cool guys and would make great co commentators.
Seems like most games on GDQ average 30 minutes to 1.5 hours. Maybe the run is just too long? Also not very exciting for those who dont share our nostalgia

Hello, guys! I have one question. Don't laugh at me, please, because this one may seem stupid. Will I be able to change the colour of emblem on knight cloak from blue to red, if I use eSPXe, for example or another PS1 port on PC? I mean your knight (male or female) has white cloak with blue pattern in the centre, but enemy knight has white cloak with red one or red cloak with white pattern in the centre. I like red colour much more than blue one.

I played this game 3 times in my life, 1st time I was too young to understand anything, 2nd time I understood the features but didn’t have the time to play through it. 3rd time I had the time and energy and I put over 65 hours of gameplay only to get softlocked into a battle I couldn’t win. And now 20 years later I watched this guy solo it with one character pretty much. I wasted my youth lmao. Very impressive! 10/10 on my rating
Arithmetician/calculator is broken lol you should see a mime copying it. I got a playlist if you got questions; even cloud is playable if you spam finish touch and use blade beam if he is weak (or climhazzard on someone weakened 1/2 hp), especially with tailwind tricks to get infinite speed (up to 50). The fandom is helpful too. Nice story I admit as yeah this game takes years to understand especially before fandoms as the official guide was terrible (it even used a time mage instead of one of the summoners).
@@MrVariant Cloud isn't really playable tbh. You can use him, but his Limits are inferior to virtually everything. Why would you waste time tailwind tricking Cloud to 50 speed? by the time you actually do that, to make his CT skills usable, you could've finished the battle solo with a properly setup Orlandeau, Ramza, Balthier, Luso, Beowulf, Reis, Meliadoul, or Agrias. Hell, Mustadio, Rapha, or Malak are better than Cloud.
@@daethe why go up to 50 CT with tailwind when 1 finish touch will kill who is fresh, and 1 climhazzard for whoever didn't die from someone else (once they're at half hp it's practically free graviga from damage formulas). You just gotta be careful with CT like dragoon jump and bypass doing damage with the weak materia blade.

If you mean because Cloud starts on level 1, that's a different story, though targeting anything stronger levels up within a few actions so he'll catch up in about an hour of leveling, especially if you're not targeting anyone with high CT that will move out.
I mention all of this because he is hard to use, like the onion knight (I like chocobo vids lol and I just used postgame mobile equipment), but mastering the game, let alone using as a chapter 4 handicap, help gives the impotent late game some purpose as enemies won't get a turn if you prep, or they do dumb stuff like final boss faith boost to react, or chapter 1 potion/defend, while usually being slower.
Agrias needs Tynar Rouge to be any good. Without that boost, she's really weak, especially chapter 2 with no backup abilities and unlearned white magic as a guest.
@@MrVariant You're the one suggesting going up to 50 speed, which you call infinite, which it isn't. By the time you get Cloud to 50 speed, you could have SOLOED the battle with a host of other characters. He is just not good. You can want to use him and choose to use him, but you are doing so at the cost of a more effective character. This isn't a debate. If you want to make his limits relevant, you need to waste a slot equipping short charge, which reduces his potential too. So then you take him without it, and then you may as well just use someone else.
He just isn't good. There is no way to make him good that couldn't just be done by someone else that is already better overall.
It's always satisfying to see Argath get completely destroyed.
Geez no wonder they labeled ramza as a heretic he just comes up and obliterates everyone by himself in seconds.

There are certain classes that can use the jp scroll glitch as soon as you unlock a new job class. Basically, in the abilities window, if it has a scroll bar, you can select an ability that you can afford, but don't click ok. Press the scroll down or up button and it will shift the cursor to an ability that you can't afford, but keep the OK/Cancel option window open. Select ok and it will learn the expensive ability, and it will under flow your current jp (i.e 150 - 400 = 9750 jp or something like that). It will usually say that you have 0 jp, but the ability fonts will be black, not grey, meaning that you can learn them. JP scroll only works on the ps version (which can be bought on the playstation network), not the war of the lions version (psp). Finally, he has routed out various grinds to unlock all of the precursor classes for Calculator. They all need to achieve a certain job level (wizard 4, priest 4, time mage 3, oracle 3) to unlock calculator, so there are probably 4 fights to hit these levels for each job. Then, because calculator cant be jp scrolled, there is the infamous calculator grind (you'll see him trying to get a random encounter, then he uses yell with Ramza a bunch of times to get his speed up, then he'll use accumulate probably 100 times or something to have enough jp to learn the required calculator abilities to finish the run. I think he also has the guest wizards crystallize at this point since he's mostly only going to need Ramza to finish the game.

Bonewulfe its a glitch. When you select a spell to learn, you can still scroll the menu of skills to learn. So he moved it from lighting (50 Jo) to something that needs more jp than he had. Then he selected yes and the game took more Jp than he really had, resulting in negative/infinate JP

i had a personal attachment to those black mages and he just lets them turn to crystals without even picking up the crystals to learn a skill i was so confused lol i always reset if anybody dies so it was hard to watch you not even grab the crystals! XD

Is there a solo ramza category for this game?
Yeah. I've done it on the War of the Lions updated version. There are no JP glitches, and you get extra missions. The beginning can be very challenging, but Ramza becomes way OP since he makes all the attacks. Then he slaughters everyone. You also have to watch for random fights because they’ll be similar to Ramza’s level and way OP too.

Welcome to *SPEEDRUNS* If you want to do *Glitchless* that's an option. This is "ANY%" meaning glitches are allowed. And it would have taken *MUCH* longer. Longer =/= "speedrun" most of the time, unless you're talking "100%" or "Glitchless"
I have solid goals with games. Not all of them are fastest yet better than nothing.

This happens with certain sound effects and certain songs playing at a particular time. It's hard to describe, but basically you'll hear a very odd sounding death occasionally depending on those factors.
But this song is rarely played in the game, so it was my first time hearing that after playing this game for years.

The cat? Because Algus' corpse is in between the cat and the chemist so the cat can't reach and the AI is not smart enough to walk all the way around the rock, so it just sits there, because it has no available actions and will sometimes pick up crystals.

Scroll glitch. When you choose a skill you can learn in a job that uses more than one page, you get the chance to change the cursor by pressing square+direction. This way the cursor often moves to a skill you have no points to master and if you press "yes" to learn the skill, the JP goes to 0000 or 9999, allowing you to learn most (if not all) of the skills in that job.

First step in an RPG/ Tactical game- spend 30 minutes grinding for job points to make it through the next few battles as quickly as possible.
Why do people play rpgs again?
I don't grind and games that require it are poorly received from me. Pretty sure it's just done in this video for speed purposes.
You can grind for like 5-10 hours before you even do the second story battle. Just to farm jp and unlock classes.

You do understand that the purpose of a speedrun is to get through the game as quickly as possible, right? And that there are categories that split up speedruns based on whether on not glitches can/will be used? This is the 'any%' category. Meaning that generally, skips/glitches etc. can be used unless otherwise stated in the form of community guidelines. If it were in the Glitchless category, then no glitches would be used. There are Low% categories for low level runs, 100% categories for, well, 100% completion runs and many others that can also be game dependent. That's not to say that any of the other categories are glitchless either, though, unless the runner states that they are doing a glitchless run. An example of a run title could be 'Final Fantasy Tactics Speedrun - 100% - Glitchless'. While something like 'Final Fantasy Tactics Speedrun - Any%' would indicate that the runner's only goal is to complete the game as quickly as possible using any means necessary.

1.3 is not really that well made. There's room for a _helluva_ lot of improvement. It's not balanced, but unnecessary.
It's take too much skills and luck even with save state.I'd rather play poker.
Playing on PS3, not original hardware, loading time and game speed advantage, run invalid.
The awful and repetitive battle theme starting at 12:00 hurts my soul and is one of the reason I can't stand this game (I tried to compensate watching a speedrun but it's still a huge "nope", especially when the run seems to consist in 4 hours of repetitive grinding+lvl3 spells spaming. So "tactical" #Kappa ^^ #ObviousTrollIsObvious
