Ok sooo… I had to upload this video 3 times. It kept getting blocked and demonetized. There’s way more gifs and talking bunnies than there is movie footage. Also this video is heavily freestyled so if I’m all over the place, that’s why. Lol

@@davidmaestas2915 To be fair, that has always been there. That's why I've always been the one to look supposed authority figures in the eyes, and inform them that they don't decide what I will do or won't do. Sophomore year of high school, teachers told me it was unrealistic for me to try to start a business being so young. At this point in time, those teachers have all hired me several times and have admitted that they were wrong. Look, if you need incentive for anything you want to accomplish, look no further than the Blush Bunny. She's a superstar, blinding all with her brilliance.

Indeed, the book had an interesting plot in having Bianca and Wesley being "Friends with Benefits", and having casual sex to forget about their crappy home lives. Toby was a genuine nice guy too, and he was only using Bianca to make his ex jealous, and guessed that Bianca was subconsciously doing the same thing. I read the book in high school and it was a darker story about a girl whose familial life was crumbling so she was coping in really unhealthy ways by self-destructing in her personal life, notably through casual sex with the guy who made her feel bad about her body because he called her the DUFF. She does fall for him, but it was a psycholologically fraught relationship that the movie turned into a feelgood romcom.

I don't understand why they made Toby a complete asshole in the movie. From what I remember of the book, he was very sweet and actually liked Bianca and wasn't too fussed about her friends. He was a sweet little music nerd. It's like they toned down Wes's doucheyness and gave it to Toby. Also Madison wasn't even in it (she was in a companion novel) and * SPOILER* B and Wes were FWB's so their attraction to each other was more convincing and developed. They basically took the concept, kept the character names and book title but changed the plot.

I haven't read the book so I can't truly judge, but I just read the synopsis and I HATE the sound of Wes in the book. It sounds like he makes B feel bad by calling her the DUFF and then basically takes advantage of her spiraling self confidence and unstable home life to have casual sex with her. Even if they end up together in the end, that sounds gross and unhealthy. He doesn't sound nice in the least, he sounds like a very realistic depiction of a manipulative, opportunistic man who uses women. It sounds like a good book and I'm tempted to read it now

@@zigzaglychee7324 Ya his character was a lottttt different. Though he did improve he was a gigantic asshole for a lot of it. And as I said the reason they changed his character for the movie was probably because they wanted the audience to root for him and felt we wouldn't if he was the same arrogant, misogynistic tool that he was in the book. I will say though, he didn't know about her home life until well after they started sleeping together so it didn't really play a factor in it but you're definitely right about the self confidence part. The other friends are attractive but not my type of attractive. ( Beauty is subjective)

For me this was definitely one of the better teen movies. I really like the characters in this, but I felt like the story and some of the details were a bit off. Like you said I think they should have done more with the friends. When I was in school I was in a friendship group where we had whatever the opposite to a "DUFF" is. Designated Really Attractive Friend? She knew this quite well and was really arrogant about it. It got to the point where she thought she was the leader of the group and had rules like who we couldn't date and who we had to date, but everyone just ignored her and did whatever they wanted. She also believed that every guy who talked her was in love with her and likes to mention she has a boyfriend every chance she gets. I think it's safe to say she was crazy.

This kind of applies to all movies like this, but the balls to casually call someone ugly/fat to their face then zip the fuck up when that person is getting bullied by like ten people is truly unhinged behavior
Edit: i know he explains that DUFF is just a title & not necessarily literal, but like. still. I’d be shocked if someone was like “you’re the designated ugly fat friend, obviously. oh, but that doesn’t mean you’re LITERALLY ugly or fat. you’re just not as good as your friends. oh, and it’s your job to get me and the boys in with them, so how about it?”

Oh man this brought back memories. I don't remember a lot about the book or movie, but I remember being kind of obsessed with both for a while because I've related to that for a long time. Even when I was a kid back before romance was on anyone's mind, I was a chubby, hairy Latina kid with short hair and a mustache. People talked to me sometimes. I had friends kinda. I wasn't always bullied but even at the best of times nobody ever really seemed to want to be that close with me. We'd laugh and tell some stories when we happened to run into each other, send a few meme and that was it. I didn't even realize at the time but it really seemed like most groups I was in treated me kind of like a pet. I was a gateway to my friends like I was their agent and sometimes I found it fun and like I was included. But sometimes things are slowly hurting you without you realizing

it's HILARIOUS how I LOVED this movie when I was younger, I thought it was great. Now that I'm older though, I know that I'd probably dislike it a little more. This movie really tried to make me feel like the main character was ugly, AND IT ALMOST WORKED. This movie, instead of making me feel really empowered made me actually feel WORSE about myself because being the Duff isn't fun, and knowing you're the Duff is even worse, seeing a girl like Bianca and knowing that she is ostracized for how she looks, compared to her friends, in the film, where does that put me? someone who isn't white and is quite a bit heavier than her.
    on a lighter note.

And I'm... I'm a whale. Like from the movie. I've always been this way. Thyroid gland issues and stuff. Of course, my friends don't see me like that. Every time I talk about that, they're like "Gurl, what?" Their prettiness made them kind and oblivious. My ugliness made me bitter and cynical. So there's that.

The Duff is a perfect example of a girl’s complicated coming-of-age story being completely diminished when portrayed through a male perspective. The movie is centered entirely on male validation despite how shallow Bianca’s relationships with both love interests are, and almost all her positive female interactions are erased while an unnecessary spotlight was shone onto the attractive mean girl. The book discussed heavy topics, so it was never perfect source material for a light teen comedy, but giving it this treatment was seriously backward, even for 2015. It could probably be done more justice nowadays

Just thinking out loud and I'd be curious to know if anyone else kind of feels this way, but I can really and truly say that I've had plenty of duff moments in my life...still do actually. I definitely agree that media is a bit of cesspool of capitalizing on people's insecurities, but some of these tropes are at least partly based in some messed up version of truth.
I used to dance a lot and we frequented this salsa bar. It never failed that they would have people invite them to dance all night. We go hang out and I've literally been bumped out of the way as someone tried to approach one of my friends. Now look, I keep myself up, I consider myself a bit of a fashionista so I am always tidy and put together, but boy those moments sure do stick with me even now in my 30s. Unfortunately, I think it's a wider societal issue, not just media. Media is just a byproduct. And, sometimes I think women weaponize it against each other occasionally.
I think at the end of the day, the duff label might be largly self ascribed because of no external positive feedback. My friends are great and supportive and have never made me feel less than, but it was and is hard not wonder when the rest of the world isn't equally validating.
    Great vid, BTW!!!

The book barely had anything to do with her being "The Duff". He does call her that and if I remember correctly, she does have some insecurities about it, but the book is about her life.
She's dealing with an absent mom, an alcoholic dad, past heartbreak, a current crush, etc. She uses Wes as a sexual distraction from her life. And they fall in love from there.

and yes, I echo the others, I read the book many years ago, and found it more insightful and fleshed out than the movie, even though the movie is light hearted fun that I don't take it too seriously

If you've ever thought one of your friends was the DUFF of the group you really need to reevaluate yourself and if any of your friends have ever treated you or called you the DUFF you deserve better friends. I had a "friend" once who said we were the DUFFS of the group and it really hurt my feelings and we are obviously not friends anymore. I also had a friend group where I was never treated like the DUFF but they would always talk about how two of the friends were the pretty ones and never included me in that (honestly think it was just jealousy always rubbing it in my faces that they were the pretty ones because I was hot AF at the time.) We were in a production of Heathers at the time and I guess they took the method acting too far because one of them played Veronica and the other played Mac (I was Duke.) One of our other friends who was fat played Martha and I remember I was hanging out with the girl playing Mac before rehearsal and said she liked our friend who played Martha but was sad she couldn't say fat jokes anymore and that she was so glad she didn't look like her. I just awkwardly laughed her off because I've never been a skinny person myself (this girl wasn't skinny either so idk what her issue was) and then next thing I know the girl playing Martha doesn't want to be my friend anymore because they told her I was the one talking crap about her. It makes me so sad because I thought we were all really good friends but they got so rude during that show and turns out they were just pretending to be my friend and making fun of me behind my back. Like one of them called me a whale one when I was in my bathing suit even tho I was skinnier than her at the time. Im so much better off without them now too. Turns out one of them is racist and lied about being Bisexual and another cheated on her boyfriend and told her shed break up with him if he ever came out as anything other than straight and bullied him for having Tourettes. Shocker they're both all around nasty and fat phobic too.

I hate the stereotype and interestingly enough this isn't a critique on the movie since a lot of movies do this and I've never actually watched this movie but to tell you what stereotype I'm talking about is that when a man or woman doesn't fit into the beauty standard they have to be just the most sweetest nicest person and there's nothing wrong with being a good person but there are many of movies where if a person does fit into that beauty standard they can be mean , cruel controlling and pretty much a bad person but as long as they give a barely good apology always forgiven because they're "pretty" but if you're not quote on quote "beautiful" and the absolute nicest person your made out to be a villain and pretty much unredeemable in most cases
idk why this review made me go on this rant but I felt like it needed to be said

This rant fits Descendants 3 perfectly. The things that the 'villain' did in the third one. Only to apologise and be forgiven girl pls.

I remember reading the book back when it first came out expecting to absolutely hate it, then found myself relating heavily (because I was the so-called DUFF) and I'm sorely disappointed with the movie

Well I've been the ugly friend all my life. But the DUFF from the movie is the only actress I know. Parenthood, Arrested development, good girls. Mae is awesome

Now, as an additional comment. In high school, I started a business as a sophomore. I was meeting celebrities and politicians during lunch. If Mae Whitman, the actress that plays Bianca in this movie, would've been a student at my school, I would've chosen to be friends and even go out with her over her friends any day. I've always demanded respect of those around me, and unlike Wesley for most of this movie, I consider disrespect for those I'm friends with as disrespect to me. Now, to The Blush Bunny, you seem like someone worth knowing. I'm very easy to find. Oh, and I watch alot of movies as well, so I can give you pretty good recommendations for movies to watch.

The DUFF was based on a book of the same name written by a young lady whose name doesn't come to mind. In the book, the main character Bianca, spends a large portion of the story with Wesley inside her. That's the biggest difference between the book and the movie. In the movie, they don't get together until the end. In the book, instead of the conflict being about her being upset that her friends considered her the DUFF, she grows distant from her friends because she is spending so much time with Wesley and wants to keep it a secret from them.

The book was amazing. I still don´t understand why they change almost the whole story for the movie. The relationship between Bianca and Wesley was so freaking good in the book so I get so disappointed when I saw what they had done for the movie. It just sucked.
