    Pro tip: if your a couple and your dog gets lost and your searching for him, don’t split up to find him, you’ll have 2 different people in different locations calling his name and he’ll be running to and fro the calls, LOL😅 it’s true.

    We had a Pipe Organ Cactus in our yard. Family home of 60 years in southern CA. I have no idea where or when Dad got it. It was just a chunk of cactus. Sat out in the yard for years, but in the shade of a large pine tree. It only grew a little. When the pine tree died and had to come down, the cactus took off! Sun! It grew to about 15ft. or more and started blooming! We were so surprised. The flowers were bigger than Dad's hand, the palest yellow ever, no fragrance, blooming at night. The whole thing was covered in these giant flowers. The entire neighborhood wanted to be notified when it bloomed so they could come see it. It would bloom about 3 times a year. I loved it. I hope there were pictures in the visitor center.

    When training our dogs to work off leash we get them shock collars. You don't use the shock unless its a safety issue. We only use the beep or vibrate and its enough to get their attention away from whatever is making them not pay attention to you and they will come back and reset. They are amazing !

    AZ residents since 73, avid campers. Lost a dog to a lion 15ft outside our cabin door in less then 3 minutes. A vacationing family hiking with children had a lion grab small child. We hate leashing our dog as they all have been well trained. The coyotes & lions are so fast you don’t have a chance to react when they strike. Just a heads up, keep your pets close, & in remote ares you should cary a side arm. AZ is full of surprises when you aren’t prepared.

    I've used a prong color for years for my heavy puller. It stops the pulling and when I bring it out he knows a walk is coming and associates it with fun, and he gets excited. I've put it around my neck and tugged to see what it feels like and it's just mild discomfort, but all he has to do to avoid it is not pull. It's a game changer.

    Our dog is almost 2 now and has been off leash all of the time when we are hiking or mountain biking in the woods. She rarely goes out of eyesight, unless it’s a area we’ve been in lots. But a couple weeks ago I took her riding and she chased off after a bird, but I didn’t see her go. It only took about 10 seconds. And she didn’t come when she was called. I stayed exactly where she had last been with us, and keep calling, while my friend kept riding trails in the area looking to see her. It took about 40 minutes and she cam running back up the trail we had just ridden up. It seems she had followed a draw down the hill through the woods, then came across the trail we had ridden up, and followed our scent back up to me. I was so happy to hear her trail bell dingalinging. Now I’ve gotten a gps collar for her with a virtual fence alert if she gets to far from me. And I can track her with my cell phone

    Ahh the days of training off leash! It's so worth all the work though. We actually had our pup run after a mule deer in the mountains and had to wait for about 20 minutes before he returned. Scary, but luckily he came back safe. Two days ago, he listened to our recall even when there was a coyote in sight! Keep up the good work with the training! Louie looks to be doing well!

    Pack mentality is when you crouch or sit on the ground Louie will automatically come to check on you to see if you have been injured. If you want an emergency quicker response from him, scream and drop to the ground....that will really get his attention. Love your videos.....and Louie.

    You might try running Louie for a mile on-leash before the off-leash training. He’ll have released his initial energy. My son has used a shock collar with his standard poodle, which is a hunting dog in real life. As another viewer wrote, you don’t have to shock them to get their attention. I don’t know Basenjis well, but I usually have good success with my dogs’ training. Each individual is different. Finally, glad to hear he’s got a finder on him. G

    Another great video. It isn't an adventure without a few hiccups. I was just outside Tucson earlier this week and woke up in the middle of the night. I looked out my fan and went what? I opened the door and it was SNOWING!! Not a flake here and there but really coming down. Couldn't believe later that day that there was snow on the North side of roads. This has not been a great winter down in the SW. I am heading east and it will be 82 on Tuesday---Yippee.

    the plant "nicotina" (better known as the tobacco plant) flowers open up at night is pollinated by moths. it has a nice sweet smell. it's funny, my family got a dog right after my grandfather died. we named him "louie" after my grandfather. my great aunt and step grandmother would call him a different name, because they thought it was "disrespectful" to call our dog after my grandfather.

    Collar- martingale collars are limited choke collars that prevent slipping out of. Prong collars help with pulling but he isn’t to strong. Try also using the command -here- instead of come- our trainer recommends that. But it does look like Louie is doing well. Thanks for sharing. Btw love the look on Chris’s face when mistakes may have been made! Lol

    We're in a van with a "garage" and carry our folding ebikes inside. They're smaller and lighter than Rads but still a hassle to haul out and set up. So I'm interested to see what you come up with. (Our 14 lb dog rides clipped into a rear basket on one of our bikes. Maybe something like that would work for Louie.)

  • @jeanmeyer1903
    @jeanmeyer1903 ปีที่แล้ว

    I see lots of dog advice here, but can’t resist a couple more. When calling him back open your body and arms then walk backwards to be more welcoming. Another trick when training off leash is if he gets to far ahead turn and walk the opposite direction. It’ll freak him out that you are leaving him and he should come running to figure out what you’re doing. If you get an opportunity hide, he’ll stay closer because he won’t want to be separated from his pack, which is you. You’re doing great, Benjis are a very independent breed, and he is young. He and you will learn what works best for your pack.

    Good idea getting rid of the Berkey. I don't know how so many people got the wrong message on what the filtering capabilities are. Project Farm on TH-cam does in-depth reviews on products, and when he tested for the best water filters, and cut open a Berkey filter, they are nothing more than hollow charcoal. Scary that people are using water from unknown sources and thinking the Berkey will magically remove all the harmful stuff.

    Great video I stayed in the park campground when I was there. Beautiful area. Take the long drive that goes down along the border from the visitor center, I did it in my tremor. There are some really cool hikes and views along that drive. I know your filter was sent to you but I also got a triple filter and I went with Blu Technology out of michigan. Smaller and lighter filters and they have quick connects for easy hookups. I have been drinking my filtered water from the tank since the beginning with this setup no issues. They make technology for the military and even say you can pump water out of a stream or lake and drink it. They make off grid filters with pumps on them for that purpose. On another note, Have you considered getting a drone to scout ahead for camping sites? I have been considering that being by myself and wondered how good it would work.

    Almost ended up at Gun Wash last week which I’ve stayed at a few times, but decided on Maricopa off interstate 8 down Vekol Valley rd. BLM goes for miles down this road. No problem getting away from others.
    Anyways, when I had my 5th wheel I had my first ebike which was the folding type and it sat in the back seat of my truck. After pulling off the main road onto BLM I’d park and within 2 minutes the bike was ready to start scouting for my site.
    Now I have a setup like yours, truck and trailer size, but my ebike is full size and on a rack where it would take more like 10 min to put into action.
    Needless to say, I miss having that folding bike and been winging it while pulling the trailer. So far I haven’t gotten into a jam, but the next day finding I could have had a better site makes me wonder if I’d taken the time to pull the bike off the rack might be worth it ?

And she’d never taken her collar off before so it never occurred to me that might happen.

    Looking forward to trying boondocking. Waiting for it to get just a little warmer first before we add water to our rig since it's winterized. Love seeing the AZ spots, we live in Sierra Vista and a bit nervous about boondocking but it looks like some amazing spots!! Watch that cat claw, it's nasty and just wants blood. Do yall put lights down under your rig overnight? I heard something about it keeping the packrats and stuff away from trying to get up in your stuff. My dog does similar huffs but it's usually about things he wants to bark at but knows he'll get in trouble lol. Nice tip about the trash/poop/enticing smells getting contained in dry bags! Gentle leaders are really great, I've found success by switching stimulus/tool every couple walks to keep them on their toes and encourage thinking. I've got an american bulldog who's super stubborn and immune to most corrections. Might consider a longline for some of that intermediate work to make him think he's sort of offleash but you're still able to hold him accountable if he get's to a certain distance or blows you off on a recall. Dogs are a lot of work but it's so worth it and it looks like you're doing great with him!

      We’ve never put lights under our rig, but we have seen lots of people do it all over the desert. Also , it can be a good idea to pop your hood open to let out the engine heat and let light in so the don’t go to your engine. I personally don’t think the lights work. It’s more about them looking for food. We’ve only gotten mice in wooded, grasses and plains areas like Colorado and Wyoming. And we’ve never gotten one in our current trailer. 🤞 just the van and our truck.

    • @IreneIronTravels
      @IreneIronTravels  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We’ll apply online for a permit to the parks that we really want to film at and can plan ahead. But they want specific days and times so it will be tough. I’ve heard some parks will just say go ahead to small youtubers. We asked Organ Pipe and they said we needed to apply online.

      @@IreneIronTravels These new requirements are changing our travel plans. I was going to buy a lifetime National Park pass, but it looks like we will will almost never stay in them now. If you didn’t already know, the same permit rules apply to BLM land. I’m hoping the FILM act makes it out of committee and is passed by the Senate.

    Did you use the Starlink there? I'm getting one for our boondocking trips to Colorado. Amazon has a pole extension that fastens to the ladder that I'm getting also. Next time you let Louie loose, try hiding behind something and see what he does. Our terrier panics and starts running back looking for us. Lol

      We didn't use Starlink there as the Verizon was really good, but we did see a couple Starlink dishes on rigs out there. Starlink works really well in the West with a clear N sky.

    • @IreneIronTravels

      No we haven’t done a full video on the hitch. We talked a lot about it when we first got it… but we really do like it once we got the hang of hitching it on and off. I think it works best if you’re not too undersized on your truck. The bar style WDH probably does a better job with sway( I’ve heard) , but the Andersen is great because it’s light, easy to hookup, can backup with it on, and works pretty good with sway and distribution. We have a 1 ton truck and 10k trailer so no issues with it at all!

      It is called the Clearsource Ultra triple water filter. They make one that gets permanently mounted as well as the hose style hook up that we are trying. 👍 So far really like it! 👍 It's nice the whole water system is filtered and not just the drinking water. So cooking, showering, brushing teeth..etc.
