    Thank you for the content you create. I am thoroughly enjoying working my way through your back catalogue. I adopted a Portuguese rescue dog at the start of the year and will be going wild camping with him soon now that he has settled in. I live 20mins away from Dartmoor National Park so I am very spoilt for wild camping spots

    Thanks for the update Paul, good vid. One of my favourite walks that. Never seen it so busy! Intrigued by the Sawyer squeeze so might have to replace my mini now as well! Like the look of the Osprey, we're doing the Freedom trail across the Pyrenees in the summer so might be a good choice to replace my kestrel. Good shout on the minstrels but no good with my dogs!

    • @PaulMessner
      @PaulMessner  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The squeeze is definitely better than the other small filters such as the mini and trailshot. That's a coincidence...I've just had a new quilt arrive from the pyrenees today. As Tucas climashield. Looking forward to testing that.

    Love your videos Paul. Did quite a bit of backpacking a few years ago then drifted away from it doing other things. I try not to think about my own mortality but having reached the ripe age of 62.....and a half, and still being relatively fit, I've decided to get back into it while I'm still able. Your videos are a great source of information and inspiration. Did an overnight wild camp in North Wales this last weekend to try out my stuff again. Really enjoyed it. I was only 30 seconds from the van, but slowly, slowly, catchy monkey! It's probably just me but you remind me of John Thomson from The Fast Show. I keep expecting you to say at the start of your videos, "Hi, and welcome to jazzzz club". Take care my friend. Love you new little companion by the way.

    Add a 6-10gramme cone shelter for the BRS stove, and save yourself the tippy height and 40g of the extra 50gr weight of the MSR Pocket rocket. The BRS is frugal on gas, and has a much lower footprint (less likely to topple, especially with a stabiliser for the canister. Works well when given a wee bit of wind shelter, I find. Cheers from the North.

    great camp..some nice new gear too..I used the BRS stove on my west highland way hike, i agree with you, its not that good, mine packed up twice on the hike and one of the arms bent over, not wot you want , when u in the highlands, i use either MSR rocket or the Alpkit Koro now as my gas go-tos. Those expanding towels are great, if you go to your Chemist and get a urine sample tube you can fit 7 of them inside and the weight is only 30g. Thanks for advise on the Cloud Peak/Helm debate by the way..

    Did you know Paul that 'hope' in old English means Valley? I thought I'd share that with you. Good you meeting up with Andy. He's a good man and we enjoy our chats regarding each others adventures here on youtube. Always positive! I gotta say I enjoy the color of your water there - mixed with good grub it no doubt makes for an interesting chow down. The Peak district was looking impressive as ever. Good going. Mark

      It's true that you learn something new every day Mark. I din't know that about Hope. Andy probably knew. He knows everything haha. The water is a strange thing. There is a slight tinge to the taste but I've never had any issues drinking it. ATB Paul

    Good vid. Trail tip if using those annoying sawyer squeeze bags, cut down a cheap, thin, squidgy spring water bottles (shop bought) use it as a scoop to pour water into the sawyer bag. It will squash down to pack away weighs nothing.

    Agree with your observations about the BRS and Pocket Rocket. Got both and if I'm away for a few days I'm taking the Rocket. BRS is fine if you don't use Colmans gas and it's a still night, not the sort of thing you need to find out when it's too late so a brutal 50g extra for peace of mind. Oh, and my wind block borrowed from the msr universal.

    • @PaulMessner
      @PaulMessner  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gonna stick with the pocket rocket when using gas for most of my trips now. Thanks for watching.

    • @PaulMessner
      @PaulMessner  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've seen those bladders. i tend to use a cut down thin water bottle as a scoop. I packs flat and works pretty well. If the sawyer bags give way then I may upgrade. Thanks for watching and glad you enjoyed it.

    Hi Paul, cheers for the heads up on the BRS. I’ve been thinking of getting one for a while, maybe as a backup then. I’ve only used my levity with a pack cover in the rain. How did it hold up without one? Keep up the good vids. Nice to see what kit works in the uk climate.

    • @PaulMessner
      @PaulMessner  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sometimes showing what's not so good is just as valuable information. The pack held up well in the rain and shed water pretty well. I do put everything inside a thin waterproof pack liner though so nothing can get wet.

    Wow, what a busy place but good to see you did manage to get a bit of peace and quiet in the end. Andrew Beavers is very quickly getting to be one of my favorite channels to watch, great channel and a real canny lad. After watching yours and several other videos, I just bought my very first GoPro, getting the Hero 7 Black. Any thoughts on an extremal mic and filming in 4 K/1080p? Great views in the morning and quite a hike over the 2 days to be honest. Shame about the last mile and the rain - sods law lol! Cheers Alan

      Hi Alan
      Andy makes some superb videos. He's far better than me at capturing the landscapes. the hero 7 black is superb for it's size. I've started filming in 4k now. As i'm outdoors the wider angle isn't too bad. I do carry a lav microphone and the adapter but all of my latest videos area straight from the gopro with no external microphone. I do cover with a windslayer though which drastically reduces the wind interference

    Hi Paul. I've been watching a few of your videos over the last few weeks as I've always had an interest in backpacking and have now started to prepare for my first trip. It's always interesting to listen and watch other people with more experience so keep up the good work. One question though. I checked online and the peak District website said that wild camping in the park land is not allowed. Is this right or am I missing something? PDNP is the not far from me so would make a nice trip if I could be sure to camp there ok. Cheers
