Of there is one thing I have learned about being a manager is this. You are never ready lol. You learn from getting it wrong because no 2 people are looking to be treated the same way or managed the same way. Your job is to figure out how to make it work for everyone. It can be super frustrating and demoralizing when you get it wrong, but it feels SO GREAT when you nail it

I got my Project+ certification back in May (which thankfully is a lifetime certification) and I got really interested in Project Management and thinking on going deeper next year, at the moment I am actually working on getting my ICND2 before February and also working on the Security+ that should be done before December. Thanks for the video Chuck!

Im also finishing up a cybersecurity bootcamp this week (so security+ will also be on the list for me) but has Project+helped?

If you like money you have potential to earn $300k USD at the top of the ladder. Only one key tip you should love it enough to work for nothing. If you dont you will never get to you of ladder.

As an IT PM, the network engineers I work with are earning more than me. It is not a glorious lifestyle. If others let you down, you are the face to the customer.... That can be painful
I'd say PM is for you if you are a jack of all trades, but master of none. I know enough of everything I ask others to do that I feel I could do it if I needed to, and I had a week to do a 1 day task... You need to know when to question an engineer's decision, even if you don't know the answer yourself... because I've found people can get too focused on 1 way to go something when there may better way.
And I'm not talking guys with CCENT or CCNA, I'm talking Engineers with CCNP level experience (and 2 have CCIE) and working in a multi vendor environment. They all do better than our senior PMs

    • @da_baracus4280

revhead145 do you feel you should earn more than a network engineer? Serious question

    • @julianharrison9407
      @julianharrison9407 5 ปีที่แล้ว

@@da_baracus4280 It is likely he does. I was a network engineer prior to becoming a Project Manager. This put me over most of the engineers with the exception of the Network Architect. Your PMP can definitely get your a raise, but it is good to have a M.S. or MBA to go along with it. Project Managers with no certifications or degrees typically get paid a lot less.

    • @1anre

    • @revhead145

I have all the certs, that's not a problem (PRINCE2, MSP, master's of Project Management). With the environment I'm in, no I don't think I deserve more than the engineer. Anyone with their head screwed on that can talk to people can be a PM... What my engineers do and the complexity to me means they deserve more money than me.

Got my CCNA in 2013, took a roll as a infrastructure supervisor in the gaming industry, finally i was recruited to a network and business solutions architect roll for a large ISP in the pacific. I re-certed my CCNA this year and saw that most of my time now is spent doing project management. I am now working on my AWS solution architect.

Curious as to why you talk about the PMP as if it's an entry level cert for PM, especially since you point out the hours requirements for it. PMP is the cert you go for after a few years working in PM. To that point, what would you recommend for those who don't have the hours or years of experience necessary to sit for the PMP exam? The CAPM? Project+? Even for those like me with enough hours and experience, getting the fundamentals of PM down is incredibly important.

2 years no reply .... I'm an IT project manager - former painter and poker player .... I started out in web development making the career change and then switch to PM in tech. So I would say you want to learn some tech first. You don't have to be able to code (even though I do sometimes to help out the devs) but you have to understand technology. I could barely type back when I was painting houses. I did get my masters in information systems so I'm sure that helped but honestly you learn most of it on the job. So just get familiar with tech (I know that's so broad) but maybe a little coding and get familiar with the industry first.

What if I’m looking into getting a CAPM cert and also CompTIA A+? Does that make your options in PM greater? Also I don’t really wanna go the masters route right now but I wouldn’t rule it out.

I am trying to get into IT Project Management. I have over 20 years experience in IT and zero certifications. I have run my own company and have had 100s of customers however I am selling that out and looking for next steps to succeed. I feel like I could manage any project but the PMP Certification will help me "prove"my worth? or should I just keep trying without it.

Love the fact you guys are looking at the PMP, maybe you can answer a question for me. I hold a PMP certificate, i'm actually VP of my local PMP chapter, and am currently a Project Manager for wireless network provider build and commission cell towers. I am really interested in transitioning to an IT management position but have no direct IT experience and my degree is in design. Most of my experience is managing projects in Telecom, Pro-AV, VTC, and construction/drafting mixed-in. I'd really not like to not start a degree all over again, is there any IT training programs ya'll could recommend that would/could take place of a full-fledged IT based degree? I am having a difficult time breaking into the IT world for employment. I really appreciate it and if I can return the favor if you have any PMP questions I'd be happy to help! Thanks!

Hey. So, I've completed my Engineering in Computer Technology but have just a year long experience of Technical support/Customer support.
After this I've an year gap and now I'm in a different country and studying my Diploma in Project Management ( but the college isn't good at all and I'm trying to educate myself and get skills with the help of some courses on Udemy).
Also, can't afford courses like PMP or Prince, etc.
And I am desperately trying to improve myself and reach to that designation. But i donno where to start off from / the path or to start off with. I've no clue.
    Please help me?
