@@Mikeymikemike you have a beautiful tank thanks for the info on canister filters. Just wanted to ask you when you wash the pre filter sponges do you use tank water or just rinse under tap? Many thanks
Fully agreed! Thank you Mikeymikemikemikemikemikemikemikemikemikemike :D I am convinced that my first reef aquarium will have at least 2 canister filters.
I’ve been at this since I was 7 years old. Grandfather gave me a 10 gallon tank for my birthday. So almost 50 years at this. For me it’s about filtration flow and dedication to cleaning. I invested in cleaning tools and a set schedule for my aquariums I currently have. 20, 75, 90, 180, and two 225 gallon tanks. I only speak for myself but I use canister filters for all my saltwater aquariums. I water change each aquarium every other week, on a rotating schedule since I have several lol and clean every filter once a month. My levels are always perfect. I also use a lot of live rock, a large team of cleaner shrimp and I oversized the canisters because the flow ratings are marketing hype. The ratings are based on zero pump height with no media basically setting the pump next to the aquarium and empty, how much water can the pump push. Setting a water pump under an aquarium (as almost all are except for custom setups) makes the pump work harder. Basic physics. All filtration media also make the pump work harder, further reducing flow of gallons per hour. With all that said, a properly sized canister, cleaned regularly, more than gets the job done. A lot of guys with TH-cam channels show you that they clean their canister filters once every 3-6 months or longer. You have a beautiful setup by the way.
You have used your own mind and experience to create a great functioning reef system.Probably upset a load of so-called experts who are still paying off credit cards for their own set-ups.Light,filtration and movement are the basics of good reefkeeping as you have shown .
Thank you Chris, I know it may seem foreign to many but this aquarium still used the basic principles. You area right about it being able to save costs, I have figured out anyone can do a similar setup for very little money using other brands.
Lol it is complicated, he was just able to simplify it on talking points. Many people end up with dosing nightmares and uncontrolled spikes. But truthfully, key is just consistency, on water changes will control most of that, but many don't like to do that.
Canister user here on my 323Gal Folwr Setup and I was planning to upgrade to sump to be able to have a reef setup. Now I will try this. Thanks for the info. New subs here.
Starting my first saltwater tank. I just bought a tank and stand on sale and also a oase canister filter .I was a little doubtful about it going to work . This video made me feel better about it thanks 😊
Thanks for this video. I am new to the reef world, and I'm using a canister filter on my 75 gallon reef tank. I was worried that it wouldn't work out, but it looks like it's working well for you. Much love
Hi Mike, This is so sensible. I have visited my aquarium specialist so many times and they just don’t get it. I want a clutter free, simple and efficient system to introduce a marine set up to my life. I’m decided. Clean, clear, neat and concise………just like the tank. Well done from Ireland, I’m on it now. There’s always a better way! Thanks again, Peter
Oh myy this video help a lot! I always wanted to have reef tank but people always say u got to have sump skimmer ect it cost a tons!! Now I'm interested on having my first reef tank! Thank youuu
I had a 120 gal. With a 40 gal. Tank in the cabinet under. Worked with two suck/spray tubes that disappeared into the tank corner obviously carrying water out for cleaning and back in to the main tank. Had 3 types of filtration within the 40 gal. Which was all gravity fed thru them pumped back into the main tank... all I ever had to do was clean the tubes, 20-30%Water change once a month. Oh & switch out the sheet filtration on top of the 40 gal. maybe once every 6 months.. r Was by far the easiest set up I've ever run and ran so clean. Bio balls within the 40 gallon allowed for the larger water change when you did do the change. By far the best setup I've ever seen or worked with
I see you haven't posted since 2021, but I would love a short video or description on how you layer the media in the canister. Maybe give us a vidoe breakdown of the canister, your plumbing situation going into the Tunze and back out to the tank, and how you refill the water along with dosing methodology. Thanks!
I started with a CAN on my first tank setup. I made that decision after watching this and many other videos on running CAN's on reef tanks. Honestly this kind of setup is very niche, such as having that particular CAN with the heater integrated and doing all your piping in glass or acrylic. I ended up just being over whelmed with HOB equipment that would normally be down in the sump area. I am now planning on migrating my current tank to a larger one that actually uses a SUMP system. I honestly wish I had just went the SUMP route to begin with.
beautiful tank. as a sump guy myself I always suggest ppl use the oase filters for there pre-filter and heater options. Q: if power outages on a canister does not the back flow fill up the filter keeping it alive? Q: how often do you have to clean the glass lilly pipes? how does the surface skimmer work in SW? does it float more?
Please do the video on how you keep the tank dosed and topped off! Super excited as I am about to purchase a new tank and love the clean setup with no black overflow as well.
Nice alternative for reefing-I’ve been seriously considering running same sized reef using HOB filter (seachem tidal 110 packed with filter pad, bio media, carbon, gfo, zeolite), algae reactor (like your tunze), and no skimmer w/ weekly 10% water changes. Aesthetically not as clean as your setup but I do fear the inevitable prolonged power loss and anaerobic reaction in canisters, which would be avoided using HOB filter. Had a canister that wiped out a freshwater planted tank when it restarted after prolonged power loss and I wasn’t present to clean it out before power was restored. 1000 ways to skin a cat…
What a stunning tank/aquascape. Eventually want to get into reefing as the next level of progression going from cold water, generic tropical, and now currently African Cichlids. Always found sumps to appear quite complex, especially with the amount of kit required, not to mention the cost of it all as well as buying a specific tank and cabinet that is sump-ready. If I can get results like that with a canister filter then that's a real eye opener as I have 90% of the kit already in theory.
Awesome love this take on filtration, hear too many mentions of canister filters/sand beds/filter socks being Nitrate factories but this is only of they are not cleaned! Tank is stunning too! 🙌
The media is a big factor as well. When you use the standard sponges and plastic media you wont have much anaerobic bacteria. So you wont have any bacteria breaking down nitrates. The way you use this canister filter makes complete sense, you can see that a lot of thought went into this. Great tank! Great clear and concise video !
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge! I'm learning more from these videos than most of the combing of the internet i've been doing. I am in the middle of creating rock "sculptures" breaking and glueing pieces together... I have revamped my whole thought on what I was going to do. Awesome!
Good luck on your rock smashing and re-building adventure! In hindsight, I wish I'd broken my rocks down much further and less bulky. Would have ended up with more negative space along with more mounting points for Coral. That was even after building it before getting rock wet and trying many combinations and builds before settling on what I am using now.
Beautiful tank man... I use to have a 60 gallons reef tank sps dominant with a "sump" but the only things I had on it was a HOB aqua clear filter and a HOB skimmer with the heater and the return pump... And for the dosing I did it manually once a week and the same for maintenance.
Thank you :) I am not sponsored and prefer to support local stores. If you are looking for, Oase, Tunze, Aquaforest products, you can ask your local aquarium store. But since you are a man from the wind. I'm not sure where your nearest store will be.
Awesome and stunning tank. Something which has worked really well for someone, doesn't mean it will work for others too. Basic thumb rule in reef keeping I've learnt in years..... lol. Im confident in having a silent, clean, SPS tank and keeping things in sump. I have tried things with canister filter but found it tough to attend with that kind of setup. This is my personal experience and maybe I was not doing things right with canister filer.
Beautiful tank! I have a BioMaster Thermo 650 for my planted tank and it’s amazing. Oase just recently released the 850 model and I might give that a try for my next reef tank because of this video.
I had a tank setup with a canister filter and anemones sps LPS. I think that you should use two canister filters bridging them. This will make your tank run top shape
omg, I have a 20 gallons with over the top MarineLand filter. a switch over from my fresh water tank. so far so good, but again, its only 20 gallons. your tank is amazing.
Mikey hi mate. Are you still running your tanks on a canister filter. If so can you explain what you are putting at each level of the filter and when you clean it what you leave alone and don’t disturb and what you actually clean. I run a simple as tank with no filtration. Works a treat but I want to run a larger tank. My sumpless tank requires large water changes.
I know I'm late to the party but I just purchased the exact same equipment. How did you attach the filter to the reactor? The Hoses are totally different sizes. Thanks!
Regarding the Feedback you've asked for, I did run a canister Filter in the past to fight dinoflagellates in my old tank back then when it was new (very coarse Coral gravel did the job) to be honest If the filter sponges are cleaned regulary its hard to build up nitrates.. the only reason i'm not using it at the moment ist that i had to replace the Bio Media from time to time because i had a lot of tiny sponges and calcareous featherworms growing really fast in there
I have a sicce whale cannister which doesn't have a pre filter. You mentioned buying a pre filter to help polish the water. Can you give me a suggestion on a pre filter. I've looked everywhere and can't find such a thing. Maybe I'm not looking for the right thing!?
The good thing with the sicce is that it is easy to open and clean. I find it just as easy as opening a prefilter. But if you want a good one, the ISTA or SERA pre filter is good as they have included taps that stop things from spilling when you open it. I would use that one over all others.
I just decided to subscribe to yr channel, I don't have a salt water aquarium even that I think that they are amazing much more pretty then the fresh water tanks, I say this because I have 180 gallon, I hope that you won't have problems with the person's in the salt water that manufacture very fancy equipments because normally who has salt water tanks have a lot of money, just like persons that need a Ferrari or Lamborghini etc.... Very well done, the point is that, people don't want to be cleaning socks or sponges every 2/3 days and other things.
Interesting, as I’m thinking about converting my 90 gal. Discus tank to a fish only tank with my FX-4. Now I don’t have a pre filter like yours so I have to figure out an easier way to do it, but beautiful set up!! BTW what lighting system do you use and the flow of that wave maker is pretty awesome!!
This is very clean setup. Not a lot of big fish. Do you think system like that can be effective to clear water of 5-10 tangs? They made a lot of poo and are getting very big in time ;) Very nice setup. Great aqua scaping and lovely acros. How many liters it has or what is size of the tank? Greetings
Do you do like a thorough cleaning of the inside walls and components every now and then to take care of coralline algea that can cause problems on your cannister filter? I had a hang on the back filter that I use to soak in white distilled vinegar and water to combat the problem which worked. I just bought a cannister to replace it and was wondering what you recommend when the corralline starts to appear?
When coralline algae appears it is best to keep your glass clean and it will stay off the glass and grow elsewhere. As for the pipes, I swap mine weekly and clean them in bleach so coralline wont grow. For your canister, it will be very similar. Just keep it cleaned :) otherwise a monthly bath in vinegar should keep your pipes nice and clean. Best wishes
Beautiful tank and setup I run a c160 marineland canister on a 10gal tank for years mechanical filtration coarse, medium, polishing and Matrix in all other trays I have a separate surface skimmer tho I like your canister with the pre filter Keep it Super Simple I like 👍
Had to subscribe! Contemplating my next build & "want" to try a canister for the first time. After watching another youtuber (simple aquariums) & her success, it's awesome to see another youtuber with such a massive amount of sps looking happy & healthy from a canister set up! I think this may push me over the edge to give it a shot!
Great video. Just wondering how you clean your sponge every 2 to 3 days. Do you rinse in ro-di water or salt water or just tap water ? Good to see a local Perth guy sharing reef keeping knowledge.
Thank you for this video, im starting a 75 gallon saltwater tank. I went with a fluval f6. Should I remove all the sponges from the filter and fill it up with ceramic rings? I'm thinking in the future introduce some easy to keep corals nothing complicated? Thank you
Thanks, the fluval fx6 is a very big filter with big hoses. I hope cleaning it frequently will work for you. You should remove the sponges and replace it with a media that wont trap so much detritus. You can possibly create a DIY prefilter using a water filter housing, taps and some sponge inside. Twist to remove and clean. Otherwise, removing the sponge and making sure water is able to freely flow through it will work well enough.
Aside from squeezing out a sponge, what else is required for maintenance, resupply of media, and how often do you resupply and do indepth maintenance? I'm personally looking for a setup that is quieter than hang on back skimmers and filters that doesn't require to much manual work. Its for a tank I have my parents watching while I'm at college and squeezing a sponge every 3 days sounds like it may be underselling the "ease" of your method and setup.
every 3 days cleaning hte sponge on this setup results in a net nutrient export of -2ppm No3 daily. You could easily not clean it for 2 weeks and be ok. There are other things to clean but again, I dose N and P just to keep the tank happy. Unfortunatley there is no easy way. Even automatic filter rollers needs a watchful eye and they fail, will your parents know how to fix it? This for me has been the simplest method. I will do a special maintenance video for you.
@@Mikeymikemike thanks for the quick reply! They've been doing an ok job with routine maintenance roughly every 2 weeks for about a year (water change, shake out a hang on back filter cartridge, dumping out hob protien skimmer skimate). My protien skimmer is noticeably loud when working properly and my tank is far from being the cleanest so I'm looking for alternative filtration that either runs really quiet and requires little effort aside from a 2 week water change or a setup that pushes the water changes to 3 weeks or a month just to "lighten the load" for my parents. I've seen a could videos debunking the canister filter myth and it seems like a decent option that doesn't break the bank, is potentially quieter, and less visible.
Great informative video. Thanks for sharing! My question is with regards to power outages. Here in South Africa we experience alot of them. So I would like to the impact of an outage like 2 hours at a time on a canister filter if any at that on beneficial bacteria ?
2-4 hours is ok. I have actually forgot the filter off for 8 hours and no problem. The main issue is keeping the aquarium moving with the wave maker and maybe heating or cooling, I suggest a battery backup.
Thank you for your video sir. Can you make a video showing how you attached the reactor to the biomaster filter? I have have the as well. What brand of lily pipes do you use?
Absolutely amazing video! Thankyou so much for the explanation! I use a canister filter on my Reef tank and it goes pretty well. But got some great tips from your video! Is there a way to get a list of all the equipment on your tank including tank dimensions?
Hi Mike, just wondering if you could please elaborate on how to connect the algae reactor directly to the Oase filter. Also, how often do you water change and clean the main filter unit?
Thats really beautiful set up. I used to keep simple pico reef tank with canister filter(without free filter) However, it was painful to clean the glass pipe and hose. Cuz everytime i spoil the water Can u post the video how u change ur water and clean the equipments plz?
You can search "glass lily pipes skimmer" and it will come up with a store that is relevant to you :) I don't have a specific link as I purchased them from directly from the manufacturer in bulk many years ago.
How is it going? I am interested to join using the canister filter for my saltwater tank, and how do you use auto top off for the water? if not using a sump

Glad it was helpful!
Gorgeous tank sir.
Thank you!
Great video! I might set my next tank up like this.
Go for it and feel free to share it!
I know I'm late to the party but I just purchased the exact same equipment. How did you attach the filter to the reactor? The Hoses are totally different sizes. Thanks!
Regarding the Feedback you've asked for,
I did run a canister Filter in the past to fight dinoflagellates in my old tank back then when it was new (very coarse Coral gravel did the job) to be honest If the filter sponges are cleaned regulary its hard to build up nitrates.. the only reason i'm not using it at the moment ist that i had to replace the Bio Media from time to time because i had a lot of tiny sponges and calcareous featherworms growing really fast in there
I have a sicce whale cannister which doesn't have a pre filter.
Awesome video Michael!! 🤩👏🙌
Nice Tank Great Job
Dude - Thank you for sharing this and taking the time.
This is good info delivered top notch
Please tell more about the container which has a lgea inside. How it works.
Great Setup and informativ content, greetings out of switzerland
Which ocean touches Switzerland? I can see why you might want a reef tank :) Greetings to you and thanks for the comment
Very informative and useful video, clearly explained with a good speech post, I look forward to new videos from you.
Thanks
Very useful thanks a lot man u got a new follower !!! Bravo Mikey
Wow brilliant tank! I would love to see you record cleaning/changing out the media inside the filter
This is very clean setup. Not a lot of big fish. Do you think system like that can be effective to clear water of 5-10 tangs? They made a lot of poo and are getting very big in time ;)
Very nice setup.
With the right media a canister filter works great. I maintain 0 nitrates and .15 phos with my 25g mixed reef. Very happy , daily fed fish
Great to know, this is ideal for me because im on a budget and want another tank! Where did you get your tubes for the return and line to the filter?
How did you setup and run the tunze macro algae unit and canister together. I’m looking into doing the same with my fluval 307 canister
Would you mind adding links to some of the stuff you talk about in the video like the media and cannister. Especially the glass surface skimmer!
Also I have never used a canister filter. Do you have a video on how one even works hahaha.
Beautiful tank. How do you do the top up?
I will explain in my next vid, but the short answer is through the dosing pump @ 90% of evap rate.
Great video. Just wondering how you clean your sponge every 2 to 3 days. Do you rinse in ro-di water or salt water or just tap water ? Good to see a local Perth guy sharing reef keeping knowledge.
You can just use tap water and squeeze it dry no worries.
Did you have a heater controller or did you just inherently trust the Oase heater?
Love the tank. What are you dosing and how?
@@Mikeymikemike thank you for that tip, so tap in the inlet hose before the filter,, with another filter with a sponge to collect detritus?
How do you hook up the TUNZE reactor to the canister filter?
Thanks
lovely aquarium! it is clear that you are expressing yourself in an aquascape. The best part is that you are breaking the marine aquarium system!
Thank you very much!
@@Mikeymikemike awesome. Keep up the great work. Your video presentation is really good and interesting.
One of the most comprehensive videos, thank you!
If I want to hook up a algae reactor AND a chiller, how do I do it?
Thank you for your video sir. Can you make a video showing how you attached the reactor to the biomaster filter? I have have the as well. What brand of lily pipes do you use?
Absolutely amazing video! Thankyou so much for the explanation! I use a canister filter on my Reef tank and it goes pretty well. But got some great tips from your video! Is there a way to get a list of all the equipment on your tank including tank dimensions?
My previous video covers the basics :)
@@Mikeymikemike ok, I'll take a look! 😁
This is an amazing video, thank you so much for diving deep into this.
Hi Mike, just wondering if you could please elaborate on how to connect the algae reactor directly to the Oase filter. Also, how often do you water change and clean the main filter unit?
Ur tank looks very cool bro what do u dose a d feed , and what test kits u use and how often do u test ?
I will cover that in my next video :)
Love your setup. I have a FX4 and a 75 gallon saltwater due to starting in freshwater first. I was wondering how to make it all work...
Have you figured out how to make fx work with 75 gallon SW tank? I'm on the same stack and not sure how to pull it of correctly.
Thats really beautiful set up.
I used to keep simple pico reef tank with canister filter(without free filter)
However, it was painful to clean the glass pipe and hose.
Cuz everytime i spoil the water
Can u post the video how u change ur water and clean the equipments plz?
Sure can!
Awesome looking tank...... Do you have a link for the the glass pipes you use for the cannister filter? Would love to add that to my tank
Hello, is the background of your aquarium light blue or are they a gradient? the color looks very pretty
Hello, i`m from germany and i a fan of your system. I want to do it like you but i`m not sure that i understand it right what`s inside the canister filter. Can you explaine whats exactly inside? Preferably with an example product?
Greetings
Karsten
Beautiful! Can you put links to your system setup~ Brand new at this, my 17 year old just got a tank for his birthday today! We're just starting/learning and don't know anything or where to buy these filtration pieces... 😊 thanks!
I’m not sure if Oase is available in America but I’m sure you can use any canister with a prefilter
Thanks for the video. I may have missed it but how do you top off you let water? Also side question do you have bubble algae or vermitid snails?
I love your tank, Mike.
