    "White Christmas" was featured in TWO movies, but I wasn't sure which one came first. I love both of them. Anyway, 'Holiday Inn' is still my favorite movie, but the other one, 'White Christmas' featured Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye, and seemed to follow the actual lyrics of "White Christmas" a little more closely. Both are very enjoyable in their own right.

      "White Christmas" was originally introduced in "Holiday Inn" (1942).

    We had a black label 45 that had 4 of the songs on it: White Christmas, Jingle Bells, Adeste Fideles and one other, maybe God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen.

    I've come across two, Count them Two, 10" 33 rpm white Christmas records and the vinyl was unlistenable. I can't wait till I find a 10" in listening shape.

    Complete Bing Crosby Decca Christmas songs are on a 2CD set, The Voice of Christmas, but Bing had Christmas music on several labels, Capitol, Reprise, Kapp, as well as Decca.

    • @fromthesidelines
      @fromthesidelines ปีที่แล้ว

      When Bing's exclusive contract with Decca finally expired at the end of 1955, he freelanced and recorded for other labels, making the best deals to his advantage (of course, Frank Sinatra was more than happy to have him record a few albums for Reprise in the early 1960's).

    That 1942 movie is the most interesting one of all. It has several Irving Berlin songs like, Be careful, It's my Heart and Easter Parade just to mention two! I didn't know that it was rerecorded in 1947!

    The best version of White Christmas by Bing is from the movie Holiday Inn even when he re-recorded White Christmas which is still good but it doesn't beat the Holiday Inn version.

    4:23- The original "Merry Christmas" 78 album set was released in 1945, then offered as a 10 inch LP in 1949, and a "45" box set in 1950 (during the "War of the Speeds" period, Decca was taking no chances by offering that album in all three formats).

    I have the 1942 78rpm version!
    Complete series! Could you please talk about the one sided 78rpm records! I have one recording from 1929, of the first song "Some Body Loves Me". If you look for the song there is no record of the Artist at that point in time! I will not reveal her name until I receive some feedback 🤔
    Good luck and Thanks!

    Mine is on Walmart exclusive "white" vinyl. It is the standard "Merry Christmas" LP with a black Decca label. I found it back in June on clearance for $10 so decided to grab it. Have it on CD as well and I think the CD is the same one you have.

    I knew about White Christmas wearing out and the re-recording, but had never heard the history of White Christmas / Merry Christmas!! VERY interesting; thank you so much for sharing this! (I wonder what if any cleanup has been done to the master(s) as we've moved from 78 to LP to CD, and if they can today be improved any further?)

  • @hootenhtn

    I would imagine the 1942 and 1947 "White Christmas" 78's would have different matrix numbers. Since the original stampers got worn out, I would imagine the 1942 78 RPM B side would have to been re-recorded as well???

    • @fromthesidelines
      @fromthesidelines ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, there were two different "take numbers": LA-3009 {May 29, 1942}, and DLA/WL-4374 {March 19, 1947}.
      However, the original 1942 release (on the "Holiday Inn" album set- 18429) featured "Let's Start the New Year Right" [May 25, 1942] as the "B" side. On the "White Christmas" set (23778), the "B" side was "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" [June 8, 1942].

    Incidentally, Bing's picture on the 1955 "Merry Christmas" LP was originally featured in a 1950 Chesterfield magazine ad [they sponsored him on radio at the time], with similar pictures of Arthur Godfrey, Perry Como and Bob Hope (all of them were sponsored by Chesterfield as well).
