Indeed Spock does "get the idea," and he uses logic in defense, both by choice and reflexively. His development throughout the series as a character along with the others' perception of him was...in a word...fascinating.
I think Spock is misunderstood. To a degree. The Vulcans are a race of high logic, but if anyone thinks they are void of emotion I think that is a mistake. When Mr Spock died he acknowledged the captain as his friend. That is an emotional response so he had to have had emotion. It was just instinct because of his bloodline to respond logically. I never truly believed that Mr Spock was void of emotion.
They have learned to suppress their emotional tendencies, Bit Sarek loved and married an earth woman,Spock has the best and the worst of both cultures without that emotional control he could easily kill a normal man with just one punch , Vulcans are stronger than any normal human on the enterprise.
While it sounds good, the question of whether an unknown species will choose "fight or flight" if presented with a threat is not really something that gets more predictable with feeling. Will they feel angry or will they feel scared? And the alternative - going and simply killing some of the creatures - would leave similar uncertainties as to their reaction.
I've been watching videos on logical fallacies in the form of Mr. Spock from the Animated Series. He's somewhat of a buttinsky, overhearing people's conversations and stepping in to correct their arguments, only sometimes does it affect efficient ship's operations.
