The old prison was originally the mine offices... my Dad worked on it as an apprentice carpenter in the 1950's. Later it became a 'white collar' prison & then later it housed drug dealers & pedos as well. It was much bigger when it was a prison with many out-buildings & big organic gardens with massive greenhouses. In 2005 they closed it & removed everything but the original mine buildings... it was then sold to an Iwi, who then on-sold it to a private owner... now it belongs to the Hope Foundation who are part of the Seventh Day Adventist network. It is used as a rehab centre I believe. All those 'dead' houses around it were prison owned houses for staff etc... one was being used as a Police station for years.

55yrs ago as a young lad from PioPio High School, we'd go to Ohura to play rugby & I thoroughly enjoyed it. Nostalgic but sad to see abandoned shops & buildings! How can we breath life back into our nearly forgotten Towns??🤔
I was basically the last Policeman that lived and worked in Ohura, 1993 to 1995, my office was in the old laundry of the Police house, no computer... Lana's shop, Kahlil Motors was still going, the prison was over the back fence, my two kids attended the local school, we socialised at the Cossie club down the road....remember my wife was invited to the annual harvest festival...she thought that was great until we discussed it and decided that was not such a great idea, 😀 but some great people living in the town and I enjoyed the couple of years we had there, very fond memories

I live in New Plymouth and far out I didn’t even know anything about this little town out in the wop wop. I couldn’t help but feel the spirit’s of those who once lived, walked in this town. Alot are for sale but there's no power or phone lines super markets or shops available, or jobs available, also the roads to drive there aren't maintained so driving for supplies is hard, aslo the government doesn't offer any benefits as there's no jobs available in the town, So really buying there for most people isn't really an option, Cheers for your comment though 🙂👍
@@TheForsakenExplorerNz Yes & the prices have gotten pretty steep too... $45k for a section that floods & you probably can't build on... around $300k for house & section in flood zone... when we went there in the late '90's the council was selling off sections for $1 (+plus the rates owing on them)...
Mate, your vids are hard to watch.. You pan too fast and moving the zoom in and out fast makes watching very difficult, almost get a seasick feeling , which is a pity as i like these types of explore videos. Maybe once you sort that out i will come back to your channel.
This video nearly 4 years old and was filmed on a phone.. we have a completely different camera set up now for over two years now and we film in 4K and HD so these issues are old news..
You should get an even worse quality microphone. I can still make out a few words over the needless annoying background music and wind and I feel that was just not the goal here.

Who owns them to sell them
How long town ghost town
Hi I was released from that prison in 2003 we use to make honey at that prison
You call it Tamanui 🤣🤣 umm bro, its Tauramanui... Tau ram an ui... easy as eh bro
Lol, Thanks for the Maori language lesson, lol
Any time bro 😳😂
its actually pronounced Tau Maru nui 😉
Mate, your vids are hard to watch.. You pan too fast and moving the zoom in and out fast makes watching very difficult, almost get a seasick feeling , which is a pity as i like these types of explore videos. Maybe once you sort that out i will come back to your channel.
This video nearly 4 years old and was filmed on a phone.. we have a completely different camera set up now for over two years now and we film in 4K and HD so these issues are old news..
It is a deserted town. Nothing to do with ghosts.
That is correct, but deserted towns are referred to as ghost towns, hence the title 😎👍
Is that lady that's always in your videos your wife? 🙂
That's a great assumption but My photographer and I prefer not to associate our personal information with the video channel, Thank you 🙂🙂
@@TheForsakenExplorerNz Understandable, I respect your decision, thanks for the great content.
No worries anytime, thank you very much for watching 🙂🙂👍👍

Another awesome video man !! P.s that armorguard van doesn't look like a 97 BMW 320I
Cheers man glad you enjoyed it, thanks 🙂🙂👍👍
I'm unsure of your reference to the BMW on the Ford Transit armorguard van?
@@TheForsakenExplorerNz The "plate" belongs to a bmw 🤫🤣🤣
Haha definitely dodge then lol 😆 🤣 😂
Y
You should get an even worse quality microphone. I can still make out a few words over the needless annoying background music and wind and I feel that was just not the goal here.
Yes we since have fixed this technical issue, 1 complaint out of over 7800 worldwide views is pretty good going, Thanks for watching 👍🙂
take your dark glasses off when talkung with PEOPLE. you want people to watch and listen to you have respect.
I'm sorry i do this as a hobby and i wear my sunglasses to help obscure my identity as i wish to not be bothered in the street my members of the public, I have plenty of respect for what i do but sounds like you have lack of respect for why i wear my sunglasses 😎
WHY DOES THIS CHANNEL HAVE STUPID ADS
Every channel had ads that's just TH-cam you can't stop that, nothing to do with the channel
