Fun fact: The director originally auditioned to direct I Know What You Did Last Summer but they had already chosen a director by the time they received his reel/audition tape. The producers liked it/him so much though that they kept him in mind and gave him this project to direct.

I remember being a teenager and renting this in blockbuster, on the condition from my parents that they watch it with me… That was one of the most awkward viewing experiences of my life. I remember getting to the part with the dog in the microwave and afterwords my mom‘s turning me and saying “so you like this kind of movie?”, and I really had to play up not liking this part, because I did like slashers, but I didn’t want my mom to think I liked watching dogs getting microwaved alive (which I don’t), I never would’ve been able to live that down lol

Yeah, I watched this movie for the first time just the other day, and that’s the worst part of the movie imo, it crushed me to see that, I was “NOOOOO” when I saw that part, it was so bad, I hate seeing stuff like that done to animals in horror movies!😢😭 I wish Hollywood would leave animals out of the horror of the horror movies, and come out unscathed!

This movie came out while I was in college and I was taking a class where we actually discussed urban legends. A few of us went to see the film more than once and what we found is that a lot of the background dialogue and the callers on the radio show's issues are also urban legends. I think we counted about 20 urban legends in the fim between the kills and the dialogue. Yeah, this is definitely the definition of a guilty pleasure film for me but I like it.

Such a lovely memory with this film. It was a rainy day in west Auckland where I grew up and my best friend and I had been playing on the farm all day when her dad called us in in the mid afternoon just as it started getting really stormy. Her parents had rented The Faculty and Urban Legend from the local video store and we all sat there watching them with popcorn and hot chocolate as the thunder rolled in. The 90s were the best. I love this movie, especially the score.

Shame Alicia Witt never really became a bigger star. She's a truly fascinating person, if you know her history. Even seemed to have superpowers as a child! She was drawing precise aerial views of places she had never been to at the age of 1. At 5 years old she was reciting Shakespeare and played classical piano. When she still a child she was typing 140 words per minute, and appeared on the show That's Incredible.

This is hands down one of my favourite Scream inspired slashers of the 90's. The opening scene is genuinely chilling. It has a creative range of set pieces, and Sasha's chase scene is up there with Helen Shiver's as one of the best horror chase scenes ever. It's definitely flawed, but when it delivers, it more than delivers. Love it.

Before leaving the theater parking lot, I made her check the backseat, under the car, the trunk, then when we got home the closet, the backyard, etc. It was the awakening of my love for horror movies, so this movie will always have a soft spot in my heart. I honestly loved the bit at the end where you mentioned pulling inspiration from less than stellar movies for your own work. As a film maker myself I actually more often than not will turn to less than stellar movies for inspiration because a lot of times they’ll have cool or interesting ideas that just aren’t executed as well and like you said, brain storming how I would do things better usually gets me a better idea than if I watched a truly outstanding film because for the latter I usually end up mimicking what was done where as with the former the idea is truly my own

I'm just recently getting into horror movies as an adult. I get creeped out fairly easily, but I love watching reviews and reading about them. Recently, my mental health tanked while waiting for a hurricane and I had to call out from work. I started streaming horror movies that morning and the first one just happened to be Urban Legends. I watched it and both sequels, Final Cut and Bloody Mary. Oddly, it calmed me down a lot and my anxiety wasn't as bad. They're all fairly terrible in quality, but I really enjoyed them.

Can anybody help me finding a movie I saw once in school?
    Things I remember:
    1. The movie opens with a murder, somebody is thrown through the glass roof of some club ( might be illegal club ) and it is a friend of the College age maybe post college age men and women present in the club
    2. Another woman ( i think black ) is murdered in a bathroom stall ( not a 100% that this is in the same movie )
    3. The murderer keeps murdering all the friends in the group one by one days or even weeks apart.
    4. Apparently one of the Guys in the group his father was in an insane Asylum as a Schizophrenic.
    5. The father had tried his best to keep his son from becoming possessed by the Demon
    6. The father is taken over by the demon and during a fight he is set on fire and kicked down an elevator shaft, but the demon manages to take hold of the son ( that last bit I am not sure)
I am 100% I didn't dream this up but I havent seen this movie since high school, so some details might be from other movies or even parody of horror movies.

On the topic of critics accusing this of being a Scream ripoff - yeah it’s dumb, but I’ll at least give them that this and Scream and “I Know What You Did” all fall very squarely inside the “whodunnit” sub-sub-genre of slasher movies, which was NOT the trend prior to that. Pre-Scream everyone was chasing the next horror icon, and movies with a mystery killer were antithetical to that goal, until Scream laid out how to give a mystery killer a memorable personality.

Don't know how true this is but still a fun/interesting what could have been: Alicia Witt (Natalie Simon) auditioned for the part of Sidney Prescott in Scream.

I gotta be honest. This has always been one of my favorite horror films. I never forgot what the killer looked like. So simple, yet unforgettable... for me, at least

I have hear the envelop urban legend. The was also one about a woman who had a beehive hair due for years and that there were roaches that burrowed into her brain. My mother, even with me being in my late 30s, still tells me to check my backseat before getting in the car.

One element I appreciated was the reveal of who the killer turns out to be. Like, it wasn't insulting but it was definitely unexpected.

That trailer in the beginning would put me off for sure, but I enjoyed the review so much that I just need to watch it and this point.
The strangest things is, I haven’t heard about that movie at all. Never. And I loved watching every slasher back in the days.

If it wasn't for this channel, I would have never discovered the Kevin Williamson era of horror. This year I've finally checked out his work in the late 90s. This guy was like the John Hughes of that era. His writing is just so different. I never grew up in the 90s but his writing is definitely on my wavelength if that makes any sense.

Even though I never watched Urban Legend, what you said at the end about watching movies to find ways to improve those movies is very true to me. A few years ago, I watched an animated movie called Rock Dog. It was pretty much overhated thanks to its similarities with Zootopia, but I thought it was an ok animated movie at best.
I since thought about how I could improve the movie, which resulted in a 4-book Rock Dog fanfic series that improves on the issues I had with Rock Dog called Mengcheng Dreaming, and I definitely had fun incorporating the good elements of Rock Dog with my love for Eurovision music and my childhood growing up in Singapore. I even created a soundtrack for the series and my book chapters are named after song titles (like the Netflix anime "Carole and Tuesday"). Rock Dog may have issues, but sometimes, it's great to look at other movies and either get inspired, or figure out how we could do certain elements of the movie differently...

Honestly this movie doesn’t really hold up to the rest of time, but even on rewatches it’s a super fun movie to watch and joke about. And just the number of high profile actors it showcased at the time?? Suuuper 90’s nostalgia

love this. there is something about these 90s slashers/horrors that is so iconic, im not cineliterate enough to know if its the cinematography/aspect ratio/colouring etc but they just look so distinctive! Makes me hugely nostalgic. 🥰

I remember when this film was released and even saw it in the cinema. Its clearly inspired by the Scream franchise, from the marketing to the delivery. It was that hip, slightly comedic, mildly self aware tongue and cheek slasher that Scream popularized. I remember it even being promoted as an unofficial companion piece to Scream - in that instead of horror movies being made fun off, it was urban legends, hence its mild self awareness.

The one thing that always bothered me is that Scream 1 - 3, I Know What You Did Last Summer, I Still Know What You Did Last Summer and The Faculty all got Laserdisc releases and this did not. It would have fit nicely with those on my shelf.
