    great vid. as always, lots of great tips. i used to hate taking the plenum off but recently had to change valve cover gaskets AGAIN and also after 320k, the entire wire harness loom protector and electrical tape became crunchy potato chips, totally disintegrated. after replacing all the convoluted wire tubing and re-taping, i must have damaged a wire because now i'm throwing a dtc code for cps sensor. in the past few weeks, i've pulled off that plenum 5 times troubleshooting, replacing the cps sensor, testing continuity, etc. while not proud of that, i am now very proficient and know all the secret tricks. the key to getting the 2 water hoses on in the back of the plenum is as follows. 1. attach the lower part of the straight and 90 degree hose first. u should have room attach the lower part with spring clamps (which i prefer because i've had leaks with the aftermarket worm clamps after 50k miles in the past). 2. i prefer to use genuine nissan hoses (the aftermarket hoses are too thick and spring clamps wont open wide enough as you mentioned in your videos). 3. slide the spring clamps that would eventually attach to the plenum side onto both hoses half way down. 4. put the plenum on and attach the 2 wire connectors (idle air control, etc.). 5. slide the straight hose on and spring clamp first (as you described in your video) and yes, definitely won't work without either long curved or 90 degree pliers or remote hose clamp pliers. 6. attach the 90 degree hose and spring clamp. 7. slide gasket on and plenum bolts. the key is to have the spring clamps on part way down the hose and slide them up towards the plenum side and to use oem hoses. it's near impossible to have the spring clamps on the brass/metal side and trying to slide it on to the rubber. i've had the most trouble when i used aftermarket hoses like the gates hoses because they're thicker. the only exception is that the straight hose is kind of expensive and you can cut a piece of straight hose much cheaper. if you go that route, the trick is to take that hose and worm clamp it so that it squishes the rubber down and reduces the diameter. after that, the spring clamp will fit. alternatively, if you choose to use aftermarket gates hoses, you could buy larger spring clamp hoses. i think the 7/8 should work on the gates hoses.

    Purring real nice.
    For anyone that hasn't seen the first vid, we know how quiet that engine is from the first vid and this is what it sounds like without everything put back on. LOL. Once everything is back on it's going to sound like a brand new Xterra.
    Good job. Great series. I learned so many little tricks from this project. Thanks.

    Hi from Michigan, I have a 04 Xterra. I don't know the history on the belt so it does worry me. I have the knock sensor code too. I've been working on cars my whole life and this seems like a huge job. I have small hands so that's good. But I would need a second car before I wanted to try doing this. Quick tip: stuck pulley bolts use a old belt and wrap it around the pulley till it overlaps itself then put the loop of the belt over the water pump(or somewhere secure). Then turn tilt stops rotating then break the bolt loose, very easy and simple.

    great series! I'm in Southern NH, about to tear apart my 2001 Xterra (3.3L V6). She cranks but won't start. I tried all the easy suspects, now I'm going for the timing belt and check the valves and cylinders for damage. Hopefully we can fix it and not have to swap the engine.
    It was good to see what caused you the most pain and your tips were excellent.
    Thanks for the good work!

    This is a simple and genius way to check for a cracked head. The best I've ever seen. I have only seen the 'educated guess' method. Like your conclusion it was just the gasket but, if it wasn't, there is so much time and work involved to put it back together only to find there is still blowback, your only recourse is to do it all over again and replace the head . . . and then put it all back together again. I know a fella with a 454- that doesn't act properly - and has had it 'checked' 3 times since 2011 and the gaskets replaced as well and still there is no improvement. I think the block was replaced the first time. Now if the heads had been checked like this back when it was first taken apart . . . or any of the times it was taken apart . . . that question would have been taken care of. Right now there is no way to know for sure without another breakdown of the engine and new gaskets, time involved, etc. to try to find the problelm so the truck just sits in his yard . . . with a lot of money wasted trying to find the problem.
    Your method of checking the head for cracks would have saved so much money and years of time invested. I don't know why everyone isn't using it or at least thought of it.
    Do you have a similar method for checking for a cracked block or do you just use the usual diagnostics for that?

    • @daringman78
      @daringman78 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I dought it. The crack could be sealed in room temperature but it does leak when the vehicle reaches the operating temp.

    Oh my gosh.. I'm going to replace my head gaskets on my 2001 xterra manual engine. It's been sitting for 2 years as a friend promised to do it but backed out. As soon as I saw white smoke I shut it off. 6 months later we decided to empty the radiator and filled the engine with diesel oil so the detergents can keep it clean. It's been just sitting breaking my heart. My only fear doing it myself is putting it back together. That seems to be the hardest when you talk about lining up the timing and pressure pounds. Uggh scares me. I have done the rotors, brakes and starter on a different vehicle and feel confident to tear it apart. Lol that is always the easiest.
    Great video, only wish you were here to teach about the timing and pressure Pounds I'm sure it's more intimidating than what it seems. Your video was amazing. Anything I need to know different because it's a manual engine. 1st gear pops out when shifting but I think that could be a broken or worn down tooth in the gears or the stick shift itself. Clutch was replaced at transmission shop just 2 years before gasket

Are there any additional items that you would replace. I am doing timing belt, water pump, etc. Is there any reason not to replace the seals. I don't have any leaks. I am just doing this all at once as preventative maintenance so I don't have a future problem.

    Nathan, not too clear about the lower intake manifold install. You were saying just make sure the heads are torqued down properly and just slap the lower intake in between them and torque them down? Also, what did you do for block preparation to make sure it is clean and flat? Im gonna have the heads checked on mine and have them milled down if needed. Thanks again..

    The threads on the spark plugs of cylinders 4 and 6 are soaked in oil. I thought it could be the valve cover gaskets but after seeing your video, I believe it’s the head gaskets. What do you think?
