    It’s good to see how the rainy season affects things in The Gambia. Regardless of how much drainage is installed systems get blocked with leaves twigs etc . Here in Scotland we get a lot of rain so we should be used to it but still we have floods occasionally. It’s when you drive through floods deeper than the exhaust and it damages the engine it’s bad . My heart goes out to peoples homes and businesses that have been flooded and badly damaged . Take care and stay safe .

    I believe everyone has a part to play in this situation
    1) stop littering the streets, make an effort to keep neighbors clean ! When the rain falls the water washes the trash all over some get in the drain and causing flooding even if the drains get cleaned or new drains and constructed the problem will remain the same. I think we should start a clean up campaign ,by having volunteers in every neighborhood , towns, streets business and keep each other accountable to keep Gambia clean I am sure this will make a huge difference……. And benefits everyone 🇬🇲❤

      The big problem is where do they take the rubbish? They used to burn a lot down near Cape point but it was stopped due to the stench and clouds of smoke. Its a big problem that the government need to rectify rapidly.

    Im not surprised at all because we don't keep our drainages or gutters clean I saw some gutters that are half way full or almost full of either sand or garbage which ofcourse causes blockages during raining season. In order for the drainages or gutters to function properly they needs to be keep clean period

      Additionally many compounds are hard covered with bricks or tiles and water can not go into the ground, so the water goes to the streets, together enough to cause a flood

  • @Africa1000
    @Africa1000 ปีที่แล้ว +39

    Allow me to explain....it is NOT simply a question of drainage. Without doubt the drainage system is inadequate but it is seriously exacerbated by poor Town Planning. Most urban compounds have been covered in concrete. No grass, no trees, no vegetation to absorb and slow down the rate of flow of the water.
    It appears very little consideration is given to the environment when these houses and compound are built. A little bit of lawn or natural vegetation on these premises will do a great job in slowing down the flow rate and give the admittedly inadequate drainage systems a chance to cope! It is the speed of the water flow, not necessarily the rain itself.

      Africa 1000.very true..in our Brufut my Gambian husband has keapt all the vegetation & many ferns.trees.& palm trees and no cement has been used outside..so we do flood as the land slopes but very quickly the flood waters go..we are in the bush.but many compounds owners chop down all their trees & vegetation as they don't like daily raking up of the dropped leaves.❤️🇬🇲👍🏿👏🏿

    • @Africa1000

      It should be over by September.
      It doesn't rain every day but when it does you know all about it.
      My belief is that the major problem is that the flow of water is too high to allow the already poor drainage systems to cope..these urban areas have too many people concreting over too much of the land to allow the rain to be absorbed and slow down the the rate of flow of water.
