That said, I can appreciate the limitations and can wait until he's satisfied with VTOLVR to consider differently structured releases for the microcosm of the quest platform. It is a very captured market, and Qualcomm supplied 10m chips for units, though I'm not sure how many units shifted so far. Whatever it is, VTOLVR is singly the best cockpit sim. I only wish the team over at iron rebellion was able to go as deep in adopting the depth in this title.
Hey guys! So in the vid there’s a scene where a random player joins the private lobby uninvited. This is a known issue and is actively being fixed.
The player is a tester of the game, and before this video was even made, had already informed Paolo of the bug. Paolo is working on the fix as well as a new feature to entirely hide your server from the public browser as well. In the current state, no sensitive info is public, so otherwise there’s no security concerns regarding privacy while playing the game.

The reason you roll when you go to fast is because of Retreating Blade stall. Basically as you increases your airspeed the forward blades get faster and the retreating blades get slower. eventually they stall.

As an actual helicopter pilot, I can confirm this. It's one of the things you learn when learning cross country and higher speed maneuvers. Blade stall doesn't usually happen with any piston engine helicopter as they don't have enough power, but turbine powered helicopters certainly can get enough speed together to do it.
How would you counter/recover the stall?
Retreating blade stall does not actually cause a roll. Due to the phenomenon know as Gyroscopic Procession (but it's not really. It's just the universal term accepted for flight training. It's a whole rabbit hole if you're interested enough to get into it.) Retreating blade stall actually manifests as a violent and sudden pitch upward. Basically, "Gyroscopic Procession" dictates that in a rotating body, any action will manifest 90⁰ later. So, in the case of rotating blade stall, the retreating blade looses lift, now suddenly the advancing blade is creating a lot more lift (relatively). Logic would dictate that it would cause a left hand roll, but realistically because of "Gyroscopic Procession" the "extra" lift manifests 90⁰ later, at the nose of the aircraft, causing a pitch up.
It's probable that the developer knows enough about helicopter flight dynamics to know about retreating blade stall, but not enough about them to know about Gyroscopic Procession and how it effects the aircraft.

That "uncontrollable roll" you mentioned was the aircraft 'trim' [I think?], all the other aircraft in the game 'trim' themselves meaning that if you let go of the joystick the aircraft will continue in the direction you pointed it at. The AH-94 does not trim itself so you have to do it manually when you are holding the joystick and using Touchpad (on the VIVE).
Also 'trimming' the AH-94 aids in the control of Yaw and Pitch. You can see what the 'trim' is by looking at the green box on the bottom right of the HUD, the empty circle is the 'trim'.

its most likely rotor over speed all helicopters do it. if your IAS is too much the side of the rotor that moves forward loses lift on one side hence a roll. has happened to me many times in the hind on dcs
Precisely! I watched some vids on it to learn how to avoid it. I've flown a bunch of planes in these sims but never helis that simulated this! Pretty cool to feel like a noob again heheh

@@OperatorDrewski Retreating Blade Stall can in some situations (depending on attitude, airspeed and collective/cyclic inputs) be resolved or minimized by lowering collective and (slowly!) reducing airspeed by carefully applying small aft cyclic input.
When I was watching the video, I rewound a bit, it looked like the trim was set full down which would be pulling the nose up.
This game is awesome. I've been on it since the early days, and it has come so so far. I can't wait to see what the modding community can do that helicopter.

If you can spare about 400 bucks, you can get a quest 2 as well as a cable and some qol accessories. It's really incredible how affordable vr is now, compared to a few years ago.

I ran this totally fine on a 3570k and 1080 (I even flew DCS in VR on that). It's even supposed to run on just a 970. So if you've got something around that ballpark, it's just getting the headset, a Q2 is 300 bucks (350 in EU). Works well with AirLink as well, you'll just need to have your rig wired to a Wifi 5 or 6 capable router or AP and ideally be in the same room for the best Wifi connection. Otherwise, I'd recommend getting the cable from VR Cover instead of the Oculus/Meta one.
14:31 that rolling is called retreating blade stall, its basically your aircraft moving so fast that one side of the rotors are stalling while the other side are producing lots of lift, in turn causing you to roll over and crash

Its because the advancing blade has faster air flowing around it than the retreating blade which creates more lift on the advancing blade, and less lift on the retreating blade, and the effect becomes more pronounced with airspeed.
Anyone know if VTOL also simulates VRS? I have flown the heli a fair amount, and have not seen it happen, but with DCS I have it happen somewhat frequently with the huey.
I don't think so, Retreating blade stall should make the copter roll to the left, I have the same issue from time to time even when flying slow, I think its my Quest losing track of the controller and forcing it hard over.

Top tip you can center-stick the helo, I find it much easier to fly that way!
Ive tried it a few times I actually find side stick to be easier. No matter what orientation the sensitivity has to be lowered.

16 players is the current max.
There are multiple different gamemodes people can host, co-op modes, and pvp modes, as well a just free flight without weapons.
There are 4 vehicles. All of wich have been mentioned in the intro.
The heli is a paid dlc, and the only multi crew aircraft.
Also keeping in mind that this entire game, all four aircraft were made by a single developer. Anyone from the old Kerbal space program days ever used BD armory mod, The developer of that mod is the only creator of this game. Really really crazy to see what one guy can do to be on par with AAA titles

OperatorDrewski just a quick thing to mention you can have your joystick inbetween your legs if you want (MFD Options Joystick Mod) which if find much more controlable than the other joystick
Btw. You don't need to have the APU on at all times.
It's there to spin up the engines, doesn't really do anything else.
it is necessary in a helicopter, APU keeps engines stable lol. i agree with this in reference to the jet(s) though.

@@MrRolnicek they dont generate the power themselves basically, if you turn off APU mid flight and try to pull any semi-intensive manoeuveurs youll get engine fail and you'll stall

The reason you roll is that you where going too fast.
So the rotorblades on the left side (going backwads) didn't get enough air flowing over them thus loosing lift,
while the blades on your right side (going forwards) are still providing a lot of lift.
Having no lift on the port side(left) and a lot of lift on the starboard side(right) then results in a roll to port.
In essence: watch your max. speed.

@@huntingfox3351 True, the nose up would manifest itself before the roll, but we don't know if this happened here as Drewski was pushing down hard at the time
and might have compensated for this.
It also might be the case that gyroscopic precession isn't in the game.
It would not only be tricky to programm, but would also make normal helicopter flying more difficult.

Hey Drew!! had a real good time playing this and learning the ropes of the VTOL..controls take a lot of getting used to. A technical question, i really struggle recording from the quest into OBS/ or any other recording software, i get the black bars and a square screen rather than what you have? how did you overcome that? Oculus Mirror or something? thanks in advance! Great video!!
if youre running the game through steam, i advise you just capture the window of the game itself and crop out the bar at the top, make sure your OBS capture layer has default settings too. let me know if this works.
Most fun i had in a while as well. And yes you can in fact use the gunner controls as the pilot, if you have enough playspace to walk through the pilots controls. 10/10

The whole thing with being thrown into an uncontrollable spin is caused by your collective. If its all janky or you haven't re centered it then it sometimes throws you into a spin and you lose control. Remember to recenter your collective all the way after doing epicc, sick, cool maneuvers! :)

Hi, can anyone share OBS settings for a nice full screen video output like the one in this video? Mines always come out with big black bands all around, video too small and not filling the monitor nicely when viewed on TH-cam... I am recording STEAM VR window for better FOV already.

You might have flipped over and crashed because of retreating blade stall, but I'm not sure whether the game actually has it. Basically, the blades moving towards and away from the wind get different levels of lift, and the faster you travel the worse it gets until you get flipped.
It is implemented properly. Everyone in the community has died to it. Everyone is now aware of it. Most people now know how to avoid it.

The trick to avoiding a retreating blade stall is obviously in controlling your speed. But doing that is a little less obvious when you're in the thick of things. Constantly scanning your speed can be distracting or conversely forgotten when the missile warning is going off.
One trick I use to avoid problems flying helicopters is to internalize the mantra 'don't run out of collective'. It comes from Murphy's Laws of Helicopters saying: "Running out of pedal, fore or aft cyclic, or collective are all bad ideas. Any combination of these can be deadly"
What this means in a practical sense, is that you should never fly around with your collective pulled all the way to max (nor any of the other control inputs, but that's not important here). If your collective is pulled all the way to maximum, then you are now 'out of collective'. That is: You have no more additional collective to add if you need to do something drastic. You want to get in the habit of setting your collective somewhere around 2/3 or 3/4 of its maximum when you're in forward flight, with small adjustments as needed by flight conditions. Invoking the mantra 'don't run out of collective' is telling yourself to check where you're collective actually is, and back off from maximum if you don't need it. If you want a more fun mantra for making videos, you can always try: "Always leave enough slack to hang yourself with."
What does this mean for avoiding retreating blade stall?: Well, the side effect of reducing collective is that you need to fly the helicopter in a more level attitude in order to keep from descending. Flying the helicopter more level reduces the forward speed, naturally keeping you away from the red line and thus, AWAY from RBS conditions. Of course, going into dives to avoid missile locks tosses speed control out the window. However, one must remember that diving forward will not in fact give you any kind of relevant speed advantage against a supersonic guided rocket with your name on it. If you're going to drop to attempt a terrain mask, just maintain what speed you have, keep your nose where it is, and dump collective. The helo will drop like a stone. Just remember as you start recovering collective that you must do so slowly and smoothly, not with a sudden yank, as that could stall the rotor blades in their entirety from the sudden change. Only, instead of rolling over, you just pancake.

i play this on my quest 2 which is 350 bux i got the cheapest 1 so with less storage cuz i play pc vr games anyway. also thats it airlink works like a charm so no cables either which is amazing. i got this quite decent router i had lying around next to me on my pc.

quick fun fact to anyone coming back to this video, chase is a very very well renowned community member who managed to reverse engineer the games networking code to attempt and succeed to create dedicated headless servers for vtol vr :)
Just bought the ah-94 today and did that mission by myself. It took a few tries. Watching this makes me realize how much better doing it with someone else would be
i like this game, but unlike dirt rally i feel like throwing up instantly, so i just cant play it. which is a shame because its clearly an excellent game.

What game is a great flight sim without VR? I know DCS, VTOL VR are great games. but i can't find something that is not VR and something a bit better than War Thunder. Second question, what are alternatives to DCS and VTOL VR that cointain Helicopters. I want something Multi Crew possible. If anyone knows please let me know! (Arma 3 is a decent alternative but nobody playing multiplayer Heli matches (MODS))
Those new modern ground radar pictures are also IRL pretty crazy, atleast what LM has had demo´s about cockpits "stuff". Basically same applications like in Hornet ground rdr, what comes to maplike use -> "look for area->zoom to area", but it also uses all other possible sensor data when you lets say want to go to "hornets exp3 mode"-> f-35 computer thinks a while and woila it creates pretty much flawless picture looking - well picture :D - of airfield. It creates the pictures combining radar to all possibly available data of the area (dlink, picturebanks, satelilites, messages from gods etc etc etc. Well you can imagine. There are some nice vids where lm shows up those functions in some air-industry exhibitions. Looks sick :o

If you're playing a VR game where you have to be in front of your computer then why not just plug in the Link? If I'm playing DCS or VTOL I'm usually Linked just so I don't run out of juice just like this. I don't have to worry about charging it ahead of time or worrying if I forgot to charge it the day before. The irony here is that helicopter pilots have a cable attached to the helmet which runs down their front as well.

The rolling is RBS (Retreating Blade Stall) from flying too fast. Irl your blades would just shatter but the game just gives you an extreme rolling moment. (I think it should be a pitching moment because of the gyroscopic effects of rotor blades but Idk?)
