This is when I finally could actually get into their music, when they softened up just a little bit (he had played them to DEATH and LOUD around our house and I was SO SICK of hearing their older stuff. Then they did this and I LOVED it!). My brother doesn't understand economics. He still doesn't get that the band was about to go broke because there was NO WAY they would get ever have been able to break into the 'mainstream' with the way they had been doing things from day one. Instead of declaring bankruptcy and breaking up, they went in a different direction. My brother hated it, still doesn't listen to anything from the Black Album. What in idiot. He's missing out on so much great writing!

The beat is written as a waltz (one-two-three-one-two-three-one-two-three) as opposed to most popular rock music composed with a 4/4 signature (which is something I didn't realize myself until about 10 years ago when I started drumming).

It is highly advised to always have the lyrics at hand when listening to Metallica, the lyrics make the song as much as the instruments. This is the only relaxed Metallica song though. So in the 80's there was a short-lived period where even the heaviest of bands were writing power ballads. This is considered Metallica's ballad, written by James for his wife when he was missing her while being on tour, and it came at a time where James was learning classical guitar.

I've been a Metallica fan since the first album and grew up in San Jose, CA about 30 minutes from where Metallica is from. My opinion is this is in top 3 Metallica songs. Technically beautiful..
For some background on this song, this is a song he somewhat made for James Hetfield's girlfriend at the time to be played over the phone. Add in some more lyrics to go along with it and you have a song James was scared to release since it was an unprecedented song in Metallica history. Add in James training his vocals with some of his business partners and you have the song right here. Also quick fun fact: James Hetfield (rhythm guitarist and singer) actually played all the guitar for the song since Kirk Hammett (lead guitarist) didn't have time to learn the song from James and play it. Edit: Nvm, just saw the end of the video of you guys reading the info from genius. But still.
As someone from the SF Bay Area, I’ve been going to Metallica gigs since 1983. I know exactly who this song was written for, she is a personal friend of mine.
Everyone will see this song differently. That's what makes songs so great. I feel like this song is about being open minded and trusting yourself. This song will be played at my funeral. Thank you for sharing.
One of the best metal ballads ever written. Everything fits so well together here and this was basically what started the more modern metallica back then. The black album really brought them into everyones focus, not just the metal core community. The 90s were such an amazing time for us kids back then, growing up with giants like Metallica, Aerosmith, GnR and even many of the older legends from 70s and 80s before it all changed so quickly in the 2000s to more over produced fast food music.
Per Hetfield, it's essentially a love song. The way I interpret it is that the noise around you trying to dictate who you become or who you are or what people expect of you is not more important than the love you have at home.
I'd go so far as to say this song is Heaven sent. It takes me to a time and place that I will never see again. Bittersweet doesn't even begin to describe it. Metallica!!!
Their style didn’t really change all that much. The god that failed and my friend of misery were as hard as their older stuff. Black album just showcased their ability to try new things and succeed!
This was written for an old time girlfriend of James Hetfield, there is no particular meaning I guess. James says now it's about the fans of Metallica, and nothing else matters but them
This song always makes me shiver and smile when I listen to it and I get goosebumps every time it hits the orchestra and guitar solo and Nothing else matters
The thing one has to understand is that during(especially) the 80ies hard rock and metal fans were always criticizing bands for changing their style even the slightest, "they have gone too soft", "they shouldn´t add such instruments", "they should sing about this and that" This song was kind of ending that era of whining, they made a very chill, beautiful balad singing "never cared for what they say, never cared for what they do".. It is Metallicas music, take it or leave it, be a fan or don´t, they are doing what makes them feel good and that is a strong message: Do what makes you feel good, don´t live with the dogma of needing to please others all your life, in the end what is important is that you make the most of your life, cause nothing else matters
@@robertpfeiff yea, Metallica was always very versatile which suited me well as their songs often had deep messages as well as served such a wide spectra of musical talent It is kind of weird though with James Hetfield even writing songs about being tired of just doing it for the money while Lars Ulrich worked hard to get every penny out of it even when they were already billionaires :D
@@Mikael_Puusaari If not for Hetfield's lyrics, I might not have stayed a fan this long, honestly. And I'm aware that makes me sound like a fanboy, I've just always identified with his words. Lars is and has always been and always will be a douche though lol.
Still loving this Metallica journey, best reaction channel I've seen embrace them and really dig their heels into the music and the adventure - thank you so much guys for bringing this to us! Definitely go for the Unforgiven trilogy, you won't be disappointed 🤘
So thankful 2 see people appreciate all types of music. Surrounded by friends who only listened to a certain genre. Open them up and get addicted 2 the passion. Love the vids!
Good one guys..sorta been waiting on you two to hear this side of Metallica. Gotta remember most bands are kids in the beginning say age 21-24...if your great like Metallica then your lucky enough to hold a fan base beyond those years but that fan base has to be wise enough to allow you your natural maturity which your style and music will be a direct reflection of. Alot of fans act like a band should never change from the time they started young. unrealistic., the same fans that dislike this era of Metallica are the same fans just mentioned.
Good point. I remember hearing the "Black" album for the first time and feeling a bit let down, or maybe like they alienated me (us), but then I started to like it quite a bit, but differently than the others, even though I'd only been introduced to them a year or two earlier. What did irritate me, was those "new fans" that would have never considered listened to the former Metallica albums.
I will say this. I sub to several reaction channels but this one keeps me coming back daily. Something about your interpretation is spot on. Metal Heads such as myself aren't really into Metallica doing covers, but YOU HAVE TO LISTEN TO "Whiskey In a Jar" I, for one, love this version and it isn't the (something I can't place it) that Metallica is really known for. Enjoy.
Played in my good childhood friend funeral after drowning the day we quit school. He was a big Metallica fan, and this song always bring all of us back ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️Cato♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
I think it's just about being open minded and trusting yourself and your intuition and not allowing other people's actions or opinions skew your "vision" of what you aspire to and your belief that you can achieve that vision. I know songs hit people differently and everyone doesn't interpret a song in exactly the same way but that's what I hear when I listen to this song.
I swear, heavy metal in general, and Metallica in particular, is the gateway drug for reformed rap fans :) I also really like their performance of this song on Howard Stern with Miley Cyrus on vocals.
1991 was an unbelievably good year for rock music. Metallica - "black album / Guns n Roses - Use Your Illusion 1 and 2 / Nirvana - Nevermind / Pearl Jam - Ten / Red Hot Chili Peppers - Blood Sugar Sex Magik / the smashing pumpkins - gish / Van Halen - For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge - and i'm probably forgetting some, all came out in 1991
Metallica has a unique ability to make the drums stand out. I can't think of another band where the drums have such a powerful sound. Most of the time the guitar takes over, but Metallica gives Lars an absolute headline in the music in my opinion and its unique.
They can be other, family, neighbour, friend, stranger …. Aligning action with your own authentic inner voice necessitates diluting the power of others words to influence you
They played this at my friend's, Brian Bougher's, funeral. This was his favorite song. He was a Marine killed in Carlsbad, CA back in '93. RIP Brother.
I was a huge fan of Metallica back in the day. At the time this song hit i had been in choral arts most of my life, so when the song came out, i instantly saw a qualitative jump in their music and i loved it.
The more melodic songs are what I first heard from Metallica and made me fall in love with their music. I love the hard stuff, but appreciate the versatility of sound they have had through their whole history. I totally get the feeling of hearing a certain sound and not liking when a band changes or goes with a different sound, used to drive me crazy back when you hear a song or two on the radio and think a band sounds like that.. then buy the CD and most the songs are entirely different lol But those days are gone, now you can hear everything ahead of time on many platforms and buy tracks as you like, not jus t that but I think it is just a wrong attitude to hold it against a band expressing their creativity as they see fit. Wanting them to sound the same on every track, forever and ever is just selfish... I mean I've been there and felt that lol so pointing at myself most of all, but have learned to blame the disappointment on me and not any band when their music doesn't match my expectations for every song. Not that you all were saying any different, just my thoughts looking back at my own attitudes on music growing up to now. Love the reacts, the music you both get me to hear again after ages or for the 1st time, and the great thoughts and discussion on them all
Love the conversation. The difference between fans not liking artists being free to develop their art freely I feel is this: fans who want to get something from the art/ artists or fans wanting to receive whatever/ wherever the artist takes them. Have you done Wherever I may roam? I always think of Metallica in the context of a motorcycle gang. But I love them most for their honesty asking life’s questions.
James finally tapped into his emotions on this album. And Bob Rock was there to keep Lars from turning the drums to max volume. The first three cassette tapes I owned as a kid was Tom Petty, Alice in Chains, and Metallica's black album.

Reason metallica is still popular and have been around as long as they have. They evolved and kept moving forward. If they stayed 80s metallica they would of died in the 80s
I saw a video clip of Metallica on some show, I honestly can't remember which one, doing an interview and they had Elton John on a screen live via satellite. Elton told James how much he liked and admired this song and James got visibility emotional. It was a beautiful moment. Imagine Sir Elton John liking Metallica! I think that says a lot!

I remember them days we was in Iraq the first time life was so simple then u could trust people then we all went to church we new right from wrong we did good together not against each other wish we could go back to them times.
Cliff Burton's death and life on the road finally caught up to Metallica. This album is a reflection of their maturation as men and musicians. They grew up even if their angry fans didn't.
I LOVE the channel but one thing I would really like to see is you guys reacting to lyric videos to dissect the meaning of the song and the lyrical content which can be difficult when you have the visual distraction of an official video.
This song ended up blowing Metallica from a massive Rock band to a massive band period. Everybody knew Metallica after this, since this got huge radio play time. This album alone has sold over 30 million copies, Every year Metallica makes at least 5 million dollars on Nothing Else Matters alone. So, financially this album set them for life.

It's about relationships. To me it's the perfect wedding song. Always one of my favorite songs ❤❤❤❤
Also quick fun fact:
James Hetfield (rhythm guitarist and singer) actually played all the guitar for the song since Kirk Hammett (lead guitarist) didn't have time to learn the song from James and play it.
Edit: Nvm, just saw the end of the video of you guys reading the info from genius. But still.
I didn’t know that until today. Cool! Thanks!
As someone from the SF Bay Area, I’ve been going to Metallica gigs since 1983. I know exactly who this song was written for, she is a personal friend of mine.
Real and true musicians evolve. Art is ever changing. I appreciate REAL artist who try new things.
This is a classic song that bought me to the heavy metal genre. 🤟Thank You so much for reacting to it. 👏Love You! ❤️
I love No Leaf Clover by Metallica and the San Francisco Symphony. One of my all time favorites!!
Same..they killed S and M...
That sequence, The Memory Remains into No Leaf Clover followed by Hero of the Day is one of my favourite things ever.
You guys GOTTA do Orion AND Blackened!
Blackened is def one of my favorite Metallica songs, and it never gets the love it deserves.
Per Hetfield, it's essentially a love song. The way I interpret it is that the noise around you trying to dictate who you become or who you are or what people expect of you is not more important than the love you have at home.
The theme "I love you, you love me. F*ck the haters. We have each other, and nothing else matters"
For me it has always been a love song especially when travelling (or touring) to the one you love.
As Jason said “ we did sell out,,,, every seat, in every arena, we played in”
But selling out made Metallica "sellout": worst thing ever in metal scene ever
@@antoniomaraspin says you, someone who doesn't matter and never will
@@antoniomaraspin I’m sure they’re crying into their millions while “purists” have cry wanks
I love the direction they took, even if they did get back into thrash
Orion, The Call if Ktulu, To Live is to Die, Suicide and Redemption.....🤘
I'd go so far as to say this song is Heaven sent. It takes me to a time and place that I will never see again. Bittersweet doesn't even begin to describe it. Metallica!!!
Sometimes music is just a little bit like time travel.
Their style didn’t really change all that much. The god that failed and my friend of misery were as hard as their older stuff. Black album just showcased their ability to try new things and succeed!
Agreed- Of wolf and man as well. Basically this album gets hate from this one song.
Through the Never!!!
It was an album that showed their depth, not just in playing instruments, but in making songs that could touch all people in different ways
This is the song my wife and I danced to at our wedding. Metallica for life!!
Awwwww
I love your reactions! So real and genuine, and also willing to learn more once you learn the lyrics
This was written for an old time girlfriend of James Hetfield, there is no particular meaning I guess. James says now it's about the fans of Metallica, and nothing else matters but them
Literally was gonna say the same thing..
He was on the phone to her when he got the idea apparently.
Absolutely class from the boys..
I’m am good friends with that Ex
@@bayareathrasher666 straight up.🤷
Fair play.
She should have hung in there..
She'd be loaded now.😆
She maybe anyways for all I know.😂
I guess he wrote it while he was on the phonr with her touring, from afar "so close, not matter how far"
I think I've heard James also say that their songs can be interpreted in many ways and that he likes that.
It's a luv song, kids. 'They' are the people surrounding the 2 in luv
This song always makes me shiver and smile when I listen to it and I get goosebumps every time it hits the orchestra and guitar solo and Nothing else matters
The thing one has to understand is that during(especially) the 80ies hard rock and metal fans were always criticizing bands for changing their style even the slightest, "they have gone too soft", "they shouldn´t add such instruments", "they should sing about this and that"
This song was kind of ending that era of whining, they made a very chill, beautiful balad singing "never cared for what they say, never cared for what they do"..
It is Metallicas music, take it or leave it, be a fan or don´t, they are doing what makes them feel good and that is a strong message:
Do what makes you feel good, don´t live with the dogma of needing to please others all your life, in the end what is important is that you make the most of your life, cause nothing else matters
I've said for years that MetallicA is really a punk band, in attitude at least. From what I can tell they've always done what they've wanted to do.
@@robertpfeiff yea, Metallica was always very versatile which suited me well as their songs often had deep messages as well as served such a wide spectra of musical talent
It is kind of weird though with James Hetfield even writing songs about being tired of just doing it for the money while Lars Ulrich worked hard to get every penny out of it even when they were already billionaires :D
Wow Lex... the way you pick apart lyrics for the definition is really incredible. You two are doing a great job. thanks for the content.
It's a love song, guys. "They" is everyone who opposes the relationship.
So thankful 2 see people appreciate all types of music. Surrounded by friends who only listened to a certain genre. Open them up and get addicted 2 the passion. Love the vids!
yall gotta dig deeper into Metallica. ride the lightning and unforgivien
Orion and a their instrumentals as well.
@@R777-RLM Good point as well...bottom line bands change if they are good enough to stick around,
and so will the fans
I will say this. I sub to several reaction channels but this one keeps me coming back daily. Something about your interpretation is spot on.
Metal Heads such as myself aren't really into Metallica doing covers, but YOU HAVE TO LISTEN TO
"Whiskey In a Jar" I, for one, love this version and it isn't the (something I can't place it) that Metallica is really known for.
Enjoy.
Metallica is currently touring in America. Brad should take Lex to her first rock concert.
“No Leaf Clover”…or anything from the S&M album/concert. Metallica are true masters of the craft!!
Ugh I love that song!
I was thinking that Metallica would never release a slow-tempo song heavier than "Sad But True". Then "Minus Human" came along...
I happen to love the entire black album, this song , wherever I may roam, and of wolf and man are great!
It's about being honest with your feelings and expressing them no matter what others think or feel.
Played in my good childhood friend funeral after drowning the day we quit school. He was a big Metallica fan, and this song always bring all of us back ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️Cato♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
This is a love song. Although you can interpret it any way you want. I’ve always thought it was James stating is his love for someone.
Agreed
Definitely a love song
I think it's just about being open minded and trusting yourself and your intuition and not allowing other people's actions or opinions skew your "vision" of what you aspire to and your belief that you can achieve that vision. I know songs hit people differently and everyone doesn't interpret a song in exactly the same way but that's what I hear when I listen to this song.
I swear, heavy metal in general, and Metallica in particular, is the gateway drug for reformed rap fans :)
I also really like their performance of this song on Howard Stern with Miley Cyrus on vocals.
1991 was an unbelievably good year for rock music. Metallica - "black album / Guns n Roses - Use Your Illusion 1 and 2 / Nirvana - Nevermind / Pearl Jam - Ten / Red Hot Chili Peppers - Blood Sugar Sex Magik / the smashing pumpkins - gish / Van Halen - For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge - and i'm probably forgetting some, all came out in 1991
So now let's play some Pantera 5 minutes alone, I know Lex will definitely love this track
Great Music & Reactions; as usual !
Metallica has a unique ability to make the drums stand out. I can't think of another band where the drums have such a powerful sound. Most of the time the guitar takes over, but Metallica gives Lars an absolute headline in the music in my opinion and its unique.
First time I heard this song I was a teenager, helped shape my character immensely! Great song all these years later.
The day that never comes. It's really good.
I totally get the feeling of hearing a certain sound and not liking when a band changes or goes with a different sound, used to drive me crazy back when you hear a song or two on the radio and think a band sounds like that.. then buy the CD and most the songs are entirely different lol
But those days are gone, now you can hear everything ahead of time on many platforms and buy tracks as you like, not jus t that but I think it is just a wrong attitude to hold it against a band expressing their creativity as they see fit.
Love the reacts, the music you both get me to hear again after ages or for the 1st time, and the great thoughts and discussion on them all
One of my favorite songs of all time!!!
if lex loves rock infused orchestra, then shes is gonna love the S&M live version of this song, this song played with a whole orchestra, check it out
This is a love song: "life is ours, we live it our way, because nothing else matters.," Etc.
Metallica- the day that never comes 🤘
James finally tapped into his emotions on this album. And Bob Rock was there to keep Lars from turning the drums to max volume. The first three cassette tapes I owned as a kid was Tom Petty, Alice in Chains, and Metallica's black album.
One of my favorites... reminds me of my dad still everytime. He died 3 yrs ago now... worst thing I've ever gone through.
Same for me jan 2018 ❤️😖 (Lex)
Wow sorry to hear. It's tough.. my dad was my best friend.. it sucks. July 23rd I remember it too clearly. ♡ thank you for the reply:) that was cool. Oh side note in 97' dad and i got to see Metallica in st Louis on the Load tour.. it was really awesome and they played this song! I was in 8th grade i believe.. ..memories lol
One of my very best recalls from the past. Great Indepth reaction as always
Reason metallica is still popular and have been around as long as they have. They evolved and kept moving forward. If they stayed 80s metallica they would of died in the 80s
I think the same
thats a complete fact. . metal as it was in the 80s' and going into the early 90's pretty much died with the rise of 'grunge'
My favorite Metallica song, I'm Rwandan East Africa, and i grew up listening to this song, I was a kid in the lat 90's, listening to them plus snoop dog Biggy and Pac
I’ll never forget, album release day buddy of mine gets it. We’re cruising around w/some others listening, get about halfway through this song and (Will) decided that it wasn’t metal enough and chunks it out the window. Some laughed, some cried, great times!
I remember them days we was in Iraq the first time life was so simple then u could trust people then we all went to church we new right from wrong we did good together not against each other wish we could go back to them times.
Trust I seek and I find in you everyday for something new open mind for a different view and nothing else matters. It's an amazingly deep song.
My absolute favorite song by them. Great reaction guys! 👍
You should hear these guys play with the San Francisco symphony orchestra. Amazing. Try “No Leaf Clover”.
Cliff Burton's death and life on the road finally caught up to Metallica. This album is a reflection of their maturation as men and musicians. They grew up even if their angry fans didn't.
This is one of my favorite Metallica songs!! It is beautiful music with a beautiful message ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ love it
Hands down the best love song of all time. "All these words I don't just say"...would love to have someone to love me that deeply❣️❣️❣️
me love you long time.
I LOVE the channel but one thing I would really like to see is you guys reacting to lyric videos to dissect the meaning of the song and the lyrical content which can be difficult when you have the visual distraction of an official video.
true story. . .i always suggest do lyric video, then an official or live
absolutely.
It bears repeating, OMFG SHE IS FUCKING ADORABLE!
