At 5:30 drummers cross-stick comes in a beat early and Cleveland briefly fears the drummer has turned the beat around on the band. He saves it and I’m sure most people didn’t notice it, but I just like moments like that in music. Shows their professionalism and cool under fire
Don't think that. I can see drummer swap to rimshot right on time with piano & bass. But I would agree that drum solo beat accordance is a bit messy. Regarding time placement i would also say that sax&trumpet doesn't got the feeling that piano&bass have.
@@gnnnn777 yeah he’s is on tempo, but he swaps downbeats from 1 & 3 to 2 & 4. You can hear his first crossstick on beat 1 when everyone comes back in. So he delays a beat to reset the crosssticks to 2 & 4. That’s why Cleveland shot him that quick glance 👀
Cleve's great. He lives here in Birmingham. Every December he plays Christmas tunes in a Walgreen's near my home with a sax man. I try to shop there at least three times during the month to get to hear him as much as I can.
Basie was the ultimate distillation of I know the melody you know the melody so why play the melody, and Zoot was the master of swing, beautiful musicians & so glad, very glad to see them in their lifetimes -- and to see this clip now -- thanks for posting
Cleveland Eaton from Fairfield, Al. Just might be the greatest most unknown bassist to the masses. Thank you for influencing my musical journey via your protegee Cleveland Eaton's Garden of Eaton. "Bama boogie" forever. ✌️
That's drummer Duffy Jackson, a man who really loves his work, the son of bassist Chubby Jackson of Woody Herman's Thundering Herd. Bassist Cleveland Eaton played with Ramsey Lewis Trio, then 17 years with Basie (subtly opening up his drive and accents after Basie had his stroke) and is featured on a great album "The Chase" with Gene Ammons and Dexter Gordon on Prestige, recorded live at the North Park Hotel by Joe Segal, 1970.
It's great not only to see basie amused (as usual), but also impressed. Eaton's flashy and doesn't sacrifice the groove. How many musicians can do that?
Awesome players, sounds, and setting! From a 1979 PBS Special also featuring Ella Fitzgerald. Sure wish it would get released commercially on DVD and Blu-ray Disc.
great video! thanks a lot! you enriched my musical horizon tremendously since i have been adoring count basie and his alumni for more than twenty years now. yours michael:-)
This is the same clip, and certainly better video quality that I have posted. It's a shame that Roy's solo is broken up, or this would be the perfect clip of this performance of "Booty's Blues"!
I really dig this cat on bass he has that advanced bass style without near ubiquitous jazz bass painful pitch bendy sound that reminds me of cheezy 16-bit video game audio.
Now that you mention it, watching it a second time through, I notice the electric tone of the bass, too. It doesn't necessarily offend me, but I'm curious as to what is causing it. Do they have a pickup on the bass, instead of microphoning it?
That bassist is a legit beast!
RIP Mr Cleveland Eaton.
this guy plays the sickest bass to blues Ive ever heard!
give me robux

Thanks for pointing that out
Good pick up on that. Cleve Eaton and Duffy Jackson were roommates on the road. I can imagine that came up in conversation lol

Basie will live forever. Yes, a great band leader but also a magnificent blues and boogie pianist. These videos are a national treasure.

RiP Cleveland Eaton. Bassman Supreme. Alabama born.
Count Basie is so "Very Cool" ! He and Cleveland are having a blast.
The Count of Basie, and Sir Cleveland Eaton, masters!
Count Basie was so full of fun and mischief, I bet he was a blast to work with.
Basie was the ultimate distillation of I know the melody you know the melody so why play the melody, and Zoot was the master of swing, beautiful musicians & so glad, very glad to see them in their lifetimes -- and to see this clip now -- thanks for posting

Cleve and Mira were once my landlords, back in the day. Along time ago, in a galaxy far, far away. Just around the corner from Tuxedo Junction.
Класс. Бейси и только он всегда несет радостную энергию,чтобы он не исполнял. .Спасибо.
god damn!
really enjoyed working with the great Cleve Eaton last night.
Randi Carwell fuck you loser bitch
This is my music. I love it.
Yes!
Its a crazy how someone who lives in a van down by the river can swing that hard!

grandi grandi!!!!
Well, the intro is the same intro to Segue in C, but it could also be Good Times Blues. :)
Ouff bass is solid !!!
Is that Zoot on tenor?
great!!!
3:41 The cameras couldn't handle the brillienace of Roy Eldrige!
Cleveland just running away on his own 😂... He knows exactly what time it is even when Duffy doesn't 😂
Music at its finest ,except if u have a broken ankle ^^
“Thank you”
doesn't get any better
basie's face at 1:38 makes me so happy.
super
the other video of this performance doesn't have the skip in it. check it out.
Cleve Eaton went on to be the longest tenured bassist with the CBO.
👍👍💙🎶

@nyvareh Je confirme ^^
Canas City 6 is also a great album.
That's swing
@theinvisiblelight Just in C
Crematoriums. Hard not to laugh as the coffin disappears behind the curtains.
hahaha huge!
The drummer had a great feel from the start... Until he flipped the rhythm. Hehe.
Hey we all mess up sometimes. No biggie
Bass player was killing. No way around that.
Who’s the sax player?
Cleveland.
01:30ss !!!
If you have the money your body can be dropped on someone you dislike.
Good evening ladies and gentlemen, your plane will be landing shortly.
I can name that sax player in one note😄
Frankie Boyle on the drums.
cleve eaton best jazz bassist with jaco p.
haha...yeah... urm you can't really talk when the bass player is cleve eaton.
you know that's Cleveland Eaton right? Probably, not too arguably the greatest jazz bassist of all time?
haha. Great drummer, but he totally turned the beat around during his solo! hehe. Oh you white people. (Just a joke, lets not get offended)
better recording here th-cam.com/video/bCx5_-P4EH4/w-d-xo.html
Well, a piano is more powerful than a bass. My bassist is usualy wired while I'm not (on the piano).
