There are so many brands and each with different properties. Sometimes it's not a case of which is better, they're just different! So I hope these videos help people find the ones that suit them best.

I agree -- sometimes I like a less pigmented white for gentle lightening or blending of colors. It all depends on what you want the pastel to do.

Thank you so much Emma. Please keep them coming. Will definitely use your link to help support you. I find the Art Spectrum make wonderful fine marks once broken. The pieces form very sharp edges. They come in an amazing range of whites too
I had never really used Art Spectrum before these videos and now I am really impressed with them. They keep appearing in the top choices. I like their strength of pigment and consistency. Similar to Unison but in a square shape. Would like some more!
Very useful and interesting tests, I am impressed with the response of the Daler-Rowney one, I have some sticks that I should use ore frequently after this test :)
The Daler Rowney surprised me! A great alternative if you can't get NuPastel where you are.

Very good tutorial for water colour artists who use whites to highlight.
Interesting to hear that! Of course white highlights are important in many mediums, and watercolorists especially have to look to another medium for help.

absolutely great video glad you tried the General's pastel white chalk pencil. I had this for awhile also the Nupastel . and Sennelier as the soft.... missing the Unison grey 28 but finding a sub .... using these as highlights on saucer and teapot.... be well
You already had some of the best ones! There is more choice in the soft pastel category as they're better at covering. The pencil and hard pastel have more of a range of quality.
Emma, What a wonderful video! Your comparisons were truly spot on! So informative too! I like when a video surprises the Artist and changes their mind about a product, as when the General's Pencil came out on the top of the testing. I recently bought some different velour papers, I honestly cannot tell them apart! Well one very cheap brand is flaking apart already and I have not even used it, just moving it from paper packet to paper packet! Perhaps a paper review? Sanded kinds or different surfaces? What about a homemade surface? Have you ever done that? i so enjoy listening to your accent and manner of soft speech is just icing on the video cake! I look forward to your next video, longer tutorial or comparison topic, either is wonderful, Thanks!
Next on my to-do list of videos is a complete paper comparison! I have samples of nearly all the pastel papers on the market and intend to do the same small painting on them all and compare. :-)

Yes paper makes a big difference in the strength of all your colours. I can only give my basic findings but others might find a different combination that works great for them.
I used the Generals for years for my best whites until finally giving the Caran d'ache a go. I'm surprised you didn't try those, Emma.
Yes I'm getting asked a lot about the Caran d'Ache and I'm sorry I didn't include it. I have one in white and couldn't find it for the demo! I have just found it and compared. It's a great white actually but I still think that particular General's pencil is better, especially for whiskers. I've used the Caran d'Ache for whiskers before and it actually is a bit soft and difficult to keep pointy enough. Good coverage though and if General's is not available where you are, I would recommend it as an alternative. Maybe I'll do a follow up...it's impossible to include everything and inevitably after you release the video someone suggests something else! :-)

I have a set of Caran d'Ache pencils that includes white, and I have had trouble with it being too translucent and soft. I think the General's is a huge improvement. But again, to each his or her own!

Thank you for doing this and the black!! You confirmed my notion that NuPastels are a top choice for white & black and added a few other of your winners to my recent order from Dakota. Have you considered doing a video on the wide spectrum of Red? I have been very frustrated by reds that lean orange or brown. I've yet love to find my perfect cool cherry red.
Thank you! Definitely on my to-do list. I'd like to continue this series and compare other colours. I've also done one on pink if you're interested. But red would be good also. I love Unisons Red 10.
I would love to see a comparison of various dark colors, especially browns, in pastels and pastel pencils. It seems difficult to find good darks in the harder pastels and pencils.
Great idea. I have abandoned this series for a while but I do have plans for others. Blue violets is one I have the pastels for already. Browns and darks in general would be another!

I didn’t see the Caran’de ache white and it is far softer like Schminke in a pencil. I have to be careful when hand sharpening. They are far softer than my Carbothellos and go right over my soft pastels.
I agree about the Caran d'Ache as I have the white pencil. I misplaced it though and couldn't find it for this video. But I know that it is nowhere near as bright as the General's having used it before. I think it has good coverage though, as you say a bit softer than Carbothellos. This I find a bit of a problem for making whiskers though, as the pencil literally goes blunt on doing one whisker. The General's stays harder and makes a finer brighter line. I was surprised!
@@EmmaColbertArt that’s worth it then because it is sturdy and goes over it. I wonder if it is the same one in my charcoal set from General. Yeah I found it! In my pastel sticks my Schminke white really sticks as far as pencils it really varies so I will be remember that. Thanks

Hi Emma, this was very helpful. Have you tried the Terry Ludwig pastels?
I have their dark range and love them! I did not have a white to include in this test unfortunately. There are some brands missing for sure, but I went on what all my best recommendations from other artists and Dakota Pastels. I'm confident that the Ludwig White would have good coverage like all their pastels do.

Hi. Went to check the Mount Vision but there is no Cool Warm White, but Warm White 1, Warm White 2, Warm White 3, and Warm White 4. So which one is it? Is it the 4? Gotta buy online but is hard to appreciate the colors. I checked at Blick's and it seems to me, number 4, is the coolest one. But I wanted to ask you first before buying. Thx and sorry for the trouble!
Sorry for the delay! I was not familiar with the full range of white Mount Visions. From memory the people at Dakota Pastels chose this selection of whites for me and I presume they chose this particular one based on what I asked them for. The one in this test says number 3 on the label. So I presume that is Warm White 3. I think what I wrote on the video here was based on what it was referred to as on the invoice.
Out of the softs, which one did you find to be the richest strongest white?
I use Gioconda pencils which are fine on thinner layers but tend to just scratch into deeper layers of soft pastel. So I'm curious about the General pencil. I've never heard of these either and when i look them up I notice that they are labeled Pastel Chalk Pencils. Is that term 'chalk' just to distinguish them from oil pastes or do they actually contain chalk?
I will have to look into their ingredients as these pencils are new to me also. Interested in them though as I've been using this white now since making this video and I'm hugely impressed! Often the term chalk is used to distinguish from oil pastel like you say.

Hi Julie, I actually do have some PanPastels but to be honest I'm not a huge fan. I love the idea because they are more like painting. But I don't like having to load up an applicator to apply the pigment. To me that's like going back to brushes when the main thing I LOVE about pastel is the immediacy of applying the pigment straight on the paper. That's just personal taste for me though. I think their quality is fantastic, and I love all the applicators for blending etc. But I just prefer the sticks personally. I do recommend them if you're looking to get a bit more painterly with pastel, I wish I enjoyed them more!

Good Morning Emma, I have one more question do you make the passepartout yourself or do you have them made?
I have a mount cutter so I can make my own, but I almost always use a professional framer who makes these for me when I'm getting something framed. Because a lot of my work is commissioned I post them unframed and my clients choose their own framing.

Never heard of Unison. So I went to check it out on Blick. The one you have there is called Grey 28... but is it a white?!!! Then, when I was looking at the colors on Blick, I saw one called Light 1....it looked white... but Im not sure! Do you know if that is a white?! Thx in advance if u can help me with this, to know which one to buy... cause they are expensive! Almost 5.20 each is too much for me! I only want a white one! Which one is it? The one called Grey 28 or Light 1? Please help!
Hi, Grey 28 is their actual white. The Light 1 colour is also a great 'white' value to use but it's a bit cooler. As if you mixed in a tiny bit of lilac or something cool, but it's really subtle. If it's regular white you want the Grey 28 is the best bet.

@@EmmaColbertArt Thank you Emma, so far I've only used Pitt Pastel from Faber-Castell, CarbOthello, Conte a Paris white pencils, but none of them are really white. Now I've ordered the China White, I couldn't find Generals with us. Thank you for your report :-)
White pastels and charcoal powder don’t work on my paper, i guess i just need to budget for a better paper
Yes, pastels are like watercolors where the paper is one of the important things if you want to work in a specific way. I would say that if you want to work in an impressionistic way, almost any paper can work for you. But from what I've experienced, to achieve the kind of detail Emma gets, you need paper like pastelmat or velour.
