Elly’s take-off motion looks like someone just realizing they’re about to get crushed by a dropped piano.
It's like he's starting a cartwheel. Probably gives him a bit of a faster start to throw his weight toward second like that.
🤣🤣
I was thinking he looked like Captain Jack Sparrow
I will never not see this now
@@ryandupuie8033 That's exactly what I thought, all he needs is the hat and a bottle of rum.
Crazy that he’s that fast with that weird jump scare like start. It’s like he’s ready but surprised at the same time.
"ahh ok the pitcher is getting set... oh shit! I'm runnin!
@@bhseigel Reminds me of a cartoon or something…he skidaddles
His technique is so bad but since his speed is insane...it doesn't matter.
I honestly think its to play off the catcher/pitcher watching him so he doesnt appear to be leaning toward 2nd too much before he goes. Also the extra motion will definitely be seen by the pitcher as they finish their motion. could cause an inaccurate throw that will help him.
When Jomboy gets into the weeds, we all win.
This should be a segment called "in the weeds"
What strains specifically?😂
Indeed good sir
I wanna get into some weed with JM, Jake, Jack, and Zo.. gotta have achievable life goals 🍃🤤🌿🫠🍀😎
this was a ridiculous video. love it
I noticed this when I went to a game earlier this year. Everyone around me says he going to steal after they walk Elly. He attempted on a foul ball, had to go back. Then immediately stole second on the next pitch, then third on the next. It’s crazy to me someone can do that in the highest level of baseball.
I’m surprised teams don’t try a pitch-out.
If he can improve his consistency at the plate, he could really be a modern Rickey Henderson. I doubt he’ll get anywhere close to touching Rickey’s SB numbers, but it’s fun seeing a guy following in his footsteps of just running anytime he feels like it
@@BendyDHfun story, at an Astros game in Houston, while Ricky was warming up, I told my son to yell, “ if Ricky don’t swing it ain’t a strike!”
He heard, walked over, and pulled my son (10 years old at the time) out on the field and played long toss for a few minutes. Signed the ball, and walked him into the bullpen and got him some gum. Amazing story we’ll never forget. Ricky was amazing.
@@AEMoreira81he’s taking off on a pitch out in one of these clips
@@AEMoreira81 He steals on pitch outs too, did it against the cads in one of the clips in this very video
walking this man is the equivalent of giving up a triple
Oh he'll steal home too
Unless they intentionally walk the guy before him?

@@Vercingetorix525new strategy just a full speed and contact lineup. who cares about big hits if everyone can score from first on a single to right field 🤣
4:23 It looks so funny how De La Cruz always throws his hands into the air when he starts running 😂
He's gotta move the air out of his way so it doesn't slow him down.
Looks like Jack Sparrow!
I wonder if he does that to help maintain his balance as he violently launches himself forward. All other runners do that, but with the arms lowered and bent at the elbows. La Cruz may feel the need to really get those long arms way out there -- elbows not bent -- to shift their weights further away from his center-of-gravity (ref: 4:25) thereby helping him keep his balance during that initial thrust.
He’s longer limbed than your average basestealer. There are different ways to get your arms and legs into the right leverage position and kind of throwing your arms out and then starting to lever once they are extended is one, the way he chooses. It has a lot to do with having to pivot to start, which is why most great base thiefs are more compact, because it’s only about pure speed for the last 2/3 of the play, but it starts with quickness and integration.
Sprinting in track doesn’t require the same realignment, which is why longer limbed runners don’t pay as much of a price getting off.
Funny part about his caught stealing numbers are most of them are successful steals that he just overslides. Kid is incredible
he gotta learn to hook his foot on the back better
Those are not successful steals. Beat the throw, absolutely. But sticking the bag is part of the steal.😊
@jess_ismore I mean, sure, but my point is it isn't the catcher or pitcher beating him. It's him beating himself by making a mistake. Like if Elly wants to steal 2nd, he's gonna steal 2nd best you can hope for is a mistake.
@@oIRONITEo totally agree. Just saying fundamentals are part of it and it's only up from here really. Which is insane.
That’s not true. Majority are pick off throws to 1st. Majority of those if you watch the replays are sided due to indisputable evidence.
We took a Texas 18U team to STL last week for a tourney and got a chance to see the Cards vs. Reds on 6/29/24. We saw Elly hit a triple, a double, and drew some walks. He also stole 3rd on a pitch and I'm telling you, if his feet hit the ground 6 times from his extended lead to his chest slide at 3rd, it was not 7 steps. I didn't realize how tall he is or how fast! Everyone says he's FAST but when he hit the triple we just watched him run the bases, in awe! That dude is the quickest, fastest base runner and TV does it NO justice! Red's won the game but we were just glad to get to a MLB game during our tourney and see some double plays, fly balls that almost left orbit, a 420ish ft HR to center, etc. Good day at Busch Stadium!
We were there for that series as well. Elly was exactly why it was one of the series we chose to see this year. Even as a cardinals fan. Elly is unbelievably fun to watch
He looks like Captain Jack Sparrow when he starts his steal
Holy crap he does
This comment should go viral!
"You are without a doubt the worst base runner I've ever heard of"
Elly: "But, you have heard of me."
No, no, Captain Jack Sparrow is another member of the Reds, Jonathan India
He 1000% does!!!!! 😂
That greenscreen usage of the laptop lid is brilliant. Great piece, guys.
I love the summary "Is this info useful? No." 🤣 Still found it very interesting! 👍 Thanks Jomboy
It's incredibly useful. You basically know for a fact that if he's on, he's going.
Shades of the old “stats that exist but do not matter”
Very Bois-esque. "What did we learn today? Nothing. Less than nothing. Thats just the way i like it."
That part was hilarious lol
I like how when elly takes off it looks like his legs decide to go and the rest of him has to catch up in a thousandth of a second
4:27 I like how he takes off like he's in trouble
It's cute
@@EruptedBurger he dabs almost every time 😂
"alright, everything's all cool here--oh SHIT FOROT TO TURN OFF THE OVEN"
It's like he's not in control. His legs decide he's running and the rest of his body is like "Oh shit we're outta here!"
bro’s like “o shit”
I love the bit where the conclusion is: he tries to steal almost every chance he gets, and when he doesn't try, it often reaults in a double play, so he should have tried. 🤣
Your editing is either the stuff of nightmares or just something that I can't look away from. I respect the hustle.
I love things like this that show a team's fans how hard one of their guys is actually hustling.
what's crazy is.....elly still has more to learn running the bases.....the kid is insane! always a smile on his face, always a great attitude, and you can see how gratefull he is playing this amazing game!
Yea always crazy when the best at something actually has room to improve. Dude is electric to watch and just seems to be all smiles and fun. So easy to root for.
@@ryanquinn1257 Not the best
@@1uckedoutliterally leading baseball in stolen bases. By what other metric should we use?
@@ogolthorpapparently he uses feelings/opinion instead of cold hard stats
I'm not sure what you mean he has more to learn. I'm certain nobody has watched Red's baseball over the last couple years than me. He studies the pitcher, he locks in and bolts at the perfect moment. His speed is unreal we all know that, and his ability to contort to avoid the tag is remarkable. What does he have to learn? Do not say he has more to learn simply because he is young. Some guys have it, and if you have it you will have it as a young player. Please tell me where he needs to improve. I bet you cannot make a cogent argument. There was one game last season he stole 2nd, and 3rd, and home during three successive pitches. Watch how he studied EVERYTHING and let his instincts take over. He could hold a master-class on base stealing NOW. Your comment is weird when you say he has more to learn. He is the very best.
Incredible work! Cubs fan here, but man it's fun to watch De La Cruz play baseball.
We're getting so close to a Jomboy John Bois baseball what-if spreadsheet collab.
Could be glorious.
@@PerfectAgenthell yeah, a secret base/jomboy collab would be awesome
Have y'all been watching his Pretty Good on their new Patreon? It is glorious. It's like the good old times, banana peel incidents, Independence Day character lines breakdown, strange things in political movements.
71 out of 74 is WILD
Us baseball fans are lucky to have content like this.
totally love De La Cruz's move when he starts his steals - he does this sort of exaggerated swinging of his arms like a vintage cartoon character building up speed before they take off🤣 It's definitely distinctive compared to other great stealers over the years who keep arms pretty tight
Once you let Elly on base, it is basically an automatic triple. Incredible speed. 😂
I love how he takes off running. It's so comical.
So you're saying Elly is basically just like any RTTS character I make on MLB the Show
either strikes out or steals every time? lolllll
He takes walks sometimes tho.
Aggresive base running is my favorite.
I would rather see a hit bounce off the wall, than see it go over the wall.
@@robertewalt7789 i agree. Smart plays and small ball are much more entertaining.
Wish there were more players like him; always pushing and taking chances - causing chaos on the base path, making pitchers preoccupied, keeping the game exciting.
The replay footage put on the back of the laptop was genius 🤘🏻
The man is the equivalent of Bart Simpson always throwing ole' trusty rock. He's an outright menace when he's on a base.
Nothin' beats that!
He's like a Jane's Addiction song. Been caught stealin', once, when he was FIVE.
Or the janes addiction song Stop ! ( Here We Go ! ) his top half seems surprised when his bottom half starts running
"80!"
*Ten Fingers
Absolutely top tier editing right there 😅😅😂
I like how you broke things down to exactly what situations mattered for analysing Elly's basestealing. I enjoyed that. It was fun.
I love this kid. The days of guys stealing 100 bases are over. This guy however is a throwback. He is gonna run everytime he has a shot. Ultimate green light.
i think it's easier than ever to steal with the new rules.
@@conedx good! Bring stealing back, making errors and plays, homeruns are overrated, running the bases is king
@@conedx , it is. Too much analytics in baseball now. "This guy is batting .350 his 2nd/3rd time around the order so do not try and steal." "This guy over his last 10AB vs lefties is hitting .472 so do not try and steal."
He already has 42 stolen bases this season. Way the game looks like it's going for the next few seasons, I bet he gets multiple 100 stolen base seasons by the end of his career.
@@josepharteIf his on-base percentage allows, I would agree.
This level of commitment is what makes Jomboy the best. What an incredible deep dive.
You definitely deserve more recognition for this!
Espero que Eli de la Cruz se mantenga en forma y continué creciendo como atleta y aportando en la MLB. Great analysis by JOMBOY.
Appreciate you taking the time to research all of Elly’s steals and attempts. Very interesting! 👍
I remember when they played the brewers and they were so worried about checking him at second, they threw it into the outfield and he scored anyway lol
Back to back Reds breakdowns…. 😁 Thanks Jimmy!
Being a Reds fan, I have thoroughly enjoyed watching him on offense and defense. I'm hoping that this team will get better as they mature and become front runners in their division. I was pleasantly surprised when they swept the Yankees recently. It shows me they are a better team than their win/loss percentage is this year.
Another Reds fan here. They're good when they're healthy. You can almost predict the losses. When the lineup is half guys who should be in AAA, it's hard to win. Having Marte back now will help, and hopefully Friedl soon. Losing McClain and ECS has really hurt.
Enjoyed watching his defense! What?
From a fellow reds fan I’d love to say it’ll happen but they’re afraid of spending money and as soon as it comes time for them to have to renegotiate contracts and pay them they’re new value they’ll trade them off like usual instead of spending the money
I'm 2 minutes in and Jimmy's got me pumped up for this! Love a deep dive breakdown.
I love this so much. Please do more of these wild, weird breakdown deep dives. This is the shit I live for.
Elly rules! You do too Jomboy. Your efforts are appreciated.
Love these longer breakdowns on what the best players are currently doing!!
Such an awesome deep dive analysis. As a data geek, this is my jam!!! Do more of these please!!! Thanks for this.
You’d like Jimmys 3 Things on Talkin Baseball channel. Every Tuesday I talk about 3 topics in baseball and usually one of them is a dive into stats
I love all of your creative goofy edits, overlaying things/your face onto funny things. But the supercut of DLC's steals on the back of the laptop while you talk is top-tier, really really cool.
Liked this breakdown, just one small nitpick at 0:10 - Elly isn’t ranked No. 1 in baserunning run value. That 1 is saying his baserunning has been worth 1 run above average, which still ranks in the 93rd percentile
Love these nerdy stat videos and the breakdowns. Also slick edditing ❤
7:37 - Jomboy is totally giving everyone “The Shocker”.
Technically only females can get the Shocker. But I respect it 🫡. Haven't heard that word in quite sometime
This reminds me of my time getting to watch Henderson play when he was playing for San Diego in the 90's. Insane
Cincinnati’s in the house!
This. This is the content, the context, the obsession...that makes me care about, appreciate, and ENJOY baseball.
Your obsession and passion is a gift to the fans. I'm glad we live in an age where you can share this with us.
The moment I saw his takeoff I recognized him from your recent video lol
Love the deepdive Jimmy, hope you're taking enough time for yourself!
I’m so happy you went into a deep dive on this. I don’t really care, but just love your tenacity and enthusiasm. Well done!
Getting some Secret Base vibes from this, in a good way. I would love more video into the weeds.
Or baseball nerd bits
This might be my favorite video you've ever done. incredible stuff
When I get "into the weeds" I watch the Matrix 3x and eat snacks until I pass out.
What a fantastic data analysis work. Jomboy is amazing!
He plays like I play with character in road to the show I steal every chance I get
this is arguably very useful information Jimmy
LOVE this nerdy content. This is peak jomboy for jomboy and baseball fans.
When Cruz starts to make for second base it looks like his body is surprised by the decision
Bro you are the best to do this. Your energy, your humor, you’re literally the Pat Mcafee of baseball seriously
When he takes off he looks like jack sparrow😂
Appreciate all of the hours and hours for this one. So good
Hoping for the first 80/200 season ever. 80 SBs, 200 Ks.
it's crazy how much he strikes out. what's even crazier is the reds have TWO OF THE TOP 3 STRIKE OUT LEADERS. elly at 1 and benson at 3. elly is gonna blow by 200 this year. lollll
He’s so overrated 😂😂
@@curves2211 cute emojis, small child.
@@curves2211 He's young and still developing but already electric.
@@viktorstagnetti7491 These are people that are going to sit here and completely ignore the fact that arguably the best player in baseball strikes out at nearly the same clip... and he is 10 years older than elly..
There's no reasoning with haters.
Jomboy, your hard work is a result of your passion for the game. Your statistical analysis, regardless of the player, is a very marketable skill. Never forget that.
So glad I’m a reds fan
Slick editing on this video! 🔥
Elly is reminiscent of Rickey.
But imagine, Henderson had the old bases.
Stats that exist but do not matter
I'm still only 3 minutes into your video but wanting to comment how much I appreciate the deep diving you do.
Elly is so fast!
Fast for MLB in 2024. The last truly fast MLB player I can think of was Jose Reyes.
Lifetime Reds fan….. man do I appreciate this breakdown
Bro’s the IRL Flash
I love Ely
I love these in depth nerdy videos you do every once in awhile!
Willie Mays Hayes.
I really appreciate the editor who put the replays on the lid of the laptop 👏 👏
very fast indeed
This was a 10/10 breakdown Jimmy! I love when you get in the weeds like this!
~ 20 minutes later ~
“So, I checked Everytime over the last five years where he ran on a forgot handed pitcher in a night game, when the average temperature is under 83 degrees, and it had rained 1 to 2.5 inches in the last 72 hours. Combine that with the average attendance of the last 4 games in that stadium and divide it by a thousand. In that situation, I’m only looking at opportunities in which that average was 40. Then…”
Thought i was the only one rolling my eyes at this entire "breakdown."
This is so much more video for my buck than I expected and I couldn’t be more excited
Videos like this, this why I watch Jomboy.
I really respect the amount of research and situations you picked through in order to make this video.
Not gonna lie, I think baseball is kinda stupid now a days....But this is pure gold and why I keep watching your channel.
Dude…love the nerding out with you! You’re amazing.
Top 3 fav Jomboy video. It’d be cool to see pitcher breakdowns this in depth more
I love a good jomboy video, been following before the back alley blitzball games, and never miss a video.
This is *EXACTLY* what being a Jomboy subscriber is all about. Absolutely beautiful. 😆 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
The dude is having more fun playing baseball than anyone I’ve seen in a long time. We need more of his energy. Absolutely electric ball player.
His steal take off is hilarious, i love it
This was fantastic! I love these deep dives! The one about the Mets refusal as base runners to try and break up double plays still blows my mind 🍻
Going down the rabbithole with Jomboy is always next level content
This video truly shows jomboy is a generational baseball journalist
been expecting this video for a while now, It seems every time I see him get on base he's running, such a fun player to watch.
JomBoy with the best breakdowns in all of sports!! Glad this guy is on team Yankees!!
Now this is a BREAKDOWN!!!
Ok, the back of the laptop as a green/blue screen is awesome, unique, avant-garde and appreciated. 👍
For all of his great qualities, the best is the willingness and ability to play every single day. Priceless in today's game.
Dude! So grateful for your attention to detail in your breakdowns and analyses. Context is everything when it comes to stats, in my humble opinion, and the measured and well thought out approaches that you employ are truly a joy to experience. There is no bias.
