Sir, they don’t have the fortitude or understanding of what it means to unite. This was not only a special time in life, but monumental for those whom grew up when artist checked their egos at the door for a greater cause.
This song will NEVER get old to me. Every year I make it a point to always listen to this song and sing along. You can't just listen one time, you feel this song in your spirit and bones! I always get emotional watching the video and listening to the positive message. Also seeing how some of the greats in the video are no longer with us! #KingDream

Just watched the B High interview with Kurtis Blow and he talked about how Whitney’s voice damn near broke the studio and how Prince funded the video, when all he wanted was a small donation from numerous artists! POWERFUL SONG ON SO MANY LEVELS!!
My dad was elated when they began talking about the King Holiday. He died before it could be brought to fruition. So, when I play this, it's not just for Dr King but for my Dad as well. Joseph H Bulluck 1917-1984
Full Force, Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam, The Fat Boys, Whodini, Run DMC, New Edition, Menudo, Mellie Mel, Kurtis Blow, Stephanie Mills James "JT" Taylor, El Debarge, Teena Marie, Stacy Lattisaw, Whitney Houston
This song makes me so sad. I miss Dr. King and all the artists in the video that we lost. Thank you PRINCE for paying for this video. It might not have gotten made. R.I.P.💜
Prince gave $90,000 so this video could be made when they couldn't get funding for it. Kurtis Blow also said Prince was at the taping of the video. At a club later that evening, Kurtis Blow thanked Prince and prince said anything for Martin Luther King. Amazing!!
Kurtis Blow said Prince quietly financed this video when the record company refused to do so. $90,000. Rest in peace to him and the other wonderful late artists who participated in the production of this beautiful song and video.:)
Tears are flowing done my cheek as I remember these days as well as videos like the King song. It was a beautiful time in life. “For the King celebrate, sing sing celebrate”.
And much love to Prince who paid $90,000 to make this video possible without taking any credit much less being in the song when they were having trouble trying to come up with the money to make this video possible...R.I.P. Prince & all of the other artist on this track who are no longer with us.
Whitney's debut album, Whitney Houston, though released on Valentine's Day 1985, only reached number one on the Billboard 200 in March of 1986..3 months AFTER the release of this song in January 1986. So crazy to imagine she was just a baby star at this time...and who she would become...

Dexter King's passing brought me here! As compared to Happy Birthday, the Steven Wonder classic, I am not sure that this song got the notoriety that it deserved. Looking back, the talent assembled on this song is phenomenal. Dexter being in the video gave it a high degree of authenticity and showed a generational awareness reflective of his age at the time. Deserved to be mentioned in the same breath as other ensemble classics such as Do They Know It's Christmas, We Are the World, and Sun City!! Rest in Power!!
Tomorrow, Dr. King's national holiday is on his birthday for the first time in history. Still play this song every January. Thank you Dr.King for influencing my life and changing the world 🌎 🙏🏽. Thank God for Dr. King and his family especially his beautiful granddaughter ❤
