I grew up in a home that was always a collection of antiques, second hand items, & a few new pieces here & there. So, I don’t think I’ve ever been “bound” by most of the decorating rules. I really appreciate hearing your thoughts & ideas on all things decor to help give me a guide on cohesiveness. My style is different from my mom’s, so it helps me to have guidelines on how to achieve the feel in my home that I long for.

I think that is because for the older generation that lived through times where they truly had NOTHING. Many people think they are poor and have to be frugal, do without, use hand me downs, but the way our grandparents and great grandparents did? Just the convenience and access to necessities vs having to MAKE EVERYTHING YOURSELF is huge. So I definitely believe many did think they were finally "secure" financially when all their kids could sit in a nice chair vs a mix matched set that at any moment could fall apart or wasnt the right size for the child or table.

Yes definitely do a Goodwill thrifting video, that would be awesome! We love your videos!! I was one of the many that had anxiety over mixing metals when we were having our house built last year but we went for it and loved the end result. We have brushed nickel, some matte black and a few brass decor items and we love how it all turned out!

Thank you for a fun video 😎 Two other rules I love to break - quarter rounds at the baseboards / floor boards and transitions between flooring types. Our builder “forced” us into both these but I fought hard and got them removed! Yeah! A much cleaner, modern look without them for sure. The reason the builders like these is they cover up imperfections. 🥴 I say - do it cleanly the first time and you don’t need all that extra material. 😎😎😎

OMG! You two are just adorable! I do love that mixing metals is starting to become a thing because I'm the kind of person that would obsess about having everything match perfectly. (kitchen pulls, light fixtures, lamp, accent tables, etc) It's nice to just go with what I like as long as it all ties in to the overall design.

When you mentioned that you have to have a place to store all of your seasonal decorations, that really hit home for me. I do not need pillow covers and blankets in every "seasonal color" for each season, only to have to store the other 3 seasons' colors until it's "their time". No matter how large or small my homes have been, storage space disappears quickly when you feel the need to redecorate for every season or every month. Thanks for the permission to declutter and simplify!

I painted my whole house dark grey. All the artwork just pops off the walls and I have every colour of metal you can imagine but I made sure they are all muted and rustic. If I like it I buy it. All the "normal" relatives think I'm insane, but quietly they all envy me. It's beautiful. Hahaha!!!!! Love to see both of you together. I think you were channelling me when you made this episode. Valentina & Jack, In opinion I feel trends and rules about decorating are out the door. I place items in my home that give me joy and that have sentimental meaning. What’s important is that each room flows together by color; I don’t decorate each holiday but by season.
I change out my pillows, rugs, throw blankets, lamps, and art, which give my home a whole new look.
I don’t match my metal hardware, Still, I do believe chrome hardware looks cheap and belongs in the garage.
Great video, thank you… 💜 Yes, shop at Goodwill...👍🏼

Favorite part? Your energy regarding painting small rooms dark. It's so contagious and motivating to see your passion for dark interiors.
On a personal note, I can attest to your theory "the smaller the room the darker the space". I have a small dining area furthest away from my sliding doors hence low light. And even with a warm off-white color.. I still struggle with lighting!! So I'm about to just a dark color and see how that goes.

You guys definitely lifted my spirits with your humor! (and I needed a lift after leaving our college freshman again after Easter break😕) One room I definitely hang some art lower is the dining room because most of the time guests are sitting. I have an art wall in there and some of it is right above the chair rail. Another rule I break is small, dark hall baths. They make such a statement with a dark hue and also a large piece of art. And yes to a goodwill haul and how you might diy what you find

I love how much fun you two have together. Never fails to make me smile. When I inherited the home and contents of the home that I grew up in I wept with gratitude. I found myself in a quandary however because the furnishings my parents collected over 50 years was mostly not my taste. Given a blank slate I would have furnished the home in a more modern style. There is lots of very traditional mahogany furniture mixed with mid century modern mixed with antiques. I considered selling it all until I realized how solidly and beautifully this furniture is made. I could not afford this level of craftmanship. So I kept it, adjusted my style, and interspersed it with my more modern style. I'm so glad I did. The mix is so interesting. So much better than uniformity. There is just naturally mixed metals everywhere. It turns out my parents had exquisite taste even though it wasn't my style. So I have really enjoyed the challenge of integrating my style into their style. I think all the dated "rules" you pointed out are dated and we don't need to have anxiety about following them. Yes my ceilings are still white but I hate painting ceilings so I won't repaint them unless absolutely necessary. Small rooms painted dark? Yes that can look amazing. Personally I don't care what size the room is I don't want to inhabit dark rooms. It makes me feel like I can't breathe and something is lurking in the shadows bent on my destruction. 😁
Goodwill is sick of seeing me too. My husband and I are madly purging as we prepare to move permanently from California to our inherited Florida home. How did we accumulate so much stuff? Would love to see a goodwill video with you two joyous people.
Hey Jack, can I get one of those murals, preferably peel and stick?

I think the matching metals “rule” was originally intended to bring cohesion to the space. In most historic and traditional styles I’ve noticed that there’s so many colors and textures and prints and ornate designs and patterns all over everything that they realized SOMETHING had to be simplified and matching all the metal was one way to do that. Now that modern design is more common we don’t have that issue and mixing metals is a way to bring interest and a little “tension” to the space without being overwhelming.

Hi Valentina great video always love and appreciate your content and tips. I was truly relieved about the picture hanging rule for the same reason you pointed out. Some walls in my home are about 13 feet high, could be even higher i'm just estimating since i've never measured because i can't reach. Yet when i watch other channels they say definitively that art should be hung at eye level without exception but it makes no sense to me. They never even mention that the height of the walls should be a factor in determining how high art can be or should be hung. Part of the purpose for the art in my home to begin with is to fill the huge space between the top of the doorway and the ceiling, the space is so big it just looked wrong and i thought it needed something. if you hang a big enough piece of art then you can see the art without really having to even lift your head or neck to see so you can see it quite easily if the piece is the right size. Seems so obvious but this is literally the first time i have heard or seen a pro interior designer point this out. Thank you for making me feel like i am no longer alone. lol.

On number 2…I’ve wondered about those matching arms too. I became hung up on that when I ordered my new sofa & chairs. I think it’s easier to blend the arm choices when your style leans contemporary. It’s more difficult with the traditional rolled arms and keeping rhythm going. Instead of rolled arms (since I’m traditional) I opted for a simple flare.

Of course you guys should do a goodwill video! And not just how to spot great items- but also maybe about how to donate? What kind of items they need the most but get the least of? What kind of “used” condition is still good enough to be considered for donation, etc? It would be so wonderful to see that kind of content- just being thoughtful about what we choose to pass along, with the added benefit of making the planet a little healthier :)

I missed this one!😮 As I get older, it is exhausting to haul the different seasonal rubbermaids out and unwrap, lay out, only to do it again a month or two later. There are a few special things make it. I don’t need all of the box put out. I totally agree to change those little things, making it a basically easy, seamlessly to go from season to season. With children and grandchildren, there is always those favorites to use or it’s just not Christmas, Easter, etc. much easier to display those couple of specials than all of that ‘stuff’.

I've broken most of these rules without even realizing that they were rules -- but that white ceiling thing really threw me for a loop with my recent remodel. My otherwise great architects were STRONGLY recommending against painting the ceilings in our 7.5' basement bedrooms. I ended up paying for a 1 hr consultation with an interior designer who confirmed my gut instinct that painting the ceilings the same color as the walls (not white, because white basements are depressing) would actually visually raise the ceiling and help ease in the egress windows that are pushed right up to the ceiling.

Another fun video, guys! Many great thoughts. I stopped the bunny, colored eggs and chicks decor years ago because they have nothing to do with the resurrection of Christ. So that’s my departure from “themes”. Kids rooms can be tastefully done with a theme as long as it’s not junkie and cheap. We plan to move to another home next year. The decor in my imagination is very different from our current style. Ready for that change with loads of inspiration from your content. Black, creams, taupes….awesome. Thanks for the fun. I totally agree with themes, when I moved to the beach in the pnw I wanted my home to reflect that - but not scream it lol. I've got a tasteful ceramic shell bowl, an art print of the west coast ocean by a local artist, and a driftwood log side table. But basically everything else is inspired by nature in colour and texture and feels nothing like a tacky beach house. I've been here just over 2 years and I look at when I first moved in to now and I've certainly become better at not making it themed 😄 I leaned too hard into the blue at first whereas now I've only got a couple of muted blue items mixed in with beige, browns, greys, deep greens, black, wicker, linen, brass, natural woods, and many handmade pottery items. It should be a vibe and not something that hits you like a tacky brick wall when you walk in 😆

To add to your point about not having to mix metals, I encourage my clients to mix metals specifically. To my eye it adds to the visual interest the same way layering different textures does.
Also, when you have 2 metals that are close but not close enough (like your example with the faucet and drawer pulls), it ends up looking unintentional and cheap. So, mix away!

Everything about a space looks and feels better when it is furnished and decorated over time with what we need and love at the time. If it’s done all at once, it feels commercial. Three cheers for broken rules!

I just obtained a gently used leather top drum table and placed it in a corner of my living room. it doesn't match a single piece of furniture in the room (well, none of it matches) and it has become a beautiful focal point in the room.

Growing up, our walls were always beige or white. My mom was worried that (even though we had no plans to move) that when we sell the house, nobody will want that color wall and we may have to paint several coats of white to cover up the dark moody colors that I always wanted. Y’all are the first designers that I love everything that y’all do! I keep referencing y’all’s videos that I’ve gotten inspiration from. I’m gonna make my mom watch y’all’s videos. I hope they will inspire her too. I would Love to paint her china cabinet matte black!🤞🏼

I am so relieved to hear about not having to match every metal in the house. Probably not a great idea to have 10 different metals going on but it’s less stressful to know it’s okay to have a different color metal for the light fixtures vs the cabinet hardware etc. especially when you are slowly remodeling a house over years time. I also liked the idea of slimming down on the seasonal decor. I am guilty of collecting so many seasonal items that I have an entire walk-in closet dedicated to it and I noticed myself eventually getting anxious about the idea of decorating for each holiday because it starting becoming a chore instead of a being a fun hobby.

Great video! I follow and break many of those rules. I did the matching furniture in my bedroom because I liked the set, but broke it in the living room and dining room. I didn’t use the chairs from the dining table because I didn’t like them. I used some that went very well with the table. The mixed metals is the rule I struggle with most. I’m replacing my ceiling fan and dining light in open concept room, and am suffering anxiety about it. The previous homeowners had matching ceiling fans over the dining table and living area, but I cannot have ceiling fans over food areas (yuck!). So I’m trying make the metals match with new ones because I heard you can mix metals but metals should match for items that serve the same function, I.e. all light fixtures should have the same metals, but door hardware doesn’t have to match the lights. I’m going with what I like. They will coordinate but may not match.

You don’t need to have all light fixtures be the same color of metal in your home. I don’t, because I’ve toured multi million dollar homes that had a mixture of metals in the ceiling fixtures and also other hardware. 🤷‍♀️

I spend most of my husband's hard-earned-money 😉at thrift stores (Goodwill being one of them). I can find some items that look designer, and they cost pennies on the dollar. I don't think people really know the steals a thrift store houses unless they visit one or, like Jack stated, Goodwill wants you guys to film a session at their site to show just what kind of treasures someone can find to fit into a room makeover or that single piece that people will talk about for days (the good kind of talk, that is). Shopping at Goodwill is cost effective and fun! Everyone should try it, and you and Jack could pave their way with a tag-along-trip. It's a good idea to think about. Thank you for all your videos, by the way. They are not only informative but fun to watch!

I decorate for the seasons (spring, summer, fall), but not for the holiday (except Christmas), I find it easier and less expensive to do this versus buying decor for each holiday.

I do not do seasonal decorations, except for some cool things at Christmas (mostly for the lights). I’m a bit of a minimalist and I do not want to store things if I can keep from it lol

I had a thought when you mentioned that “we’re free to do whatever we like in our own space”. For the most part, I believe that is true. However, when I look through design videos, I’m looking for more structured guides to mimic the looks I admire, and may not always be observant enough to know what gave it that pizzazz. Also, listening to designers is like while listening to breakdowns about what the artist was thinking when they worked on a piece - stuff I geek out about.

Themed rooms was definitely a thing in my childhood home. We had Egyptian theme, one was sort of Victorian with flocked wallpaper. Actually, my kids had themed nurseries but it was subtle, mostly soft toys and a cushion.

I don’t do seasonal decorating at all. Except maybe changing candle scents. So I actually need to mix it up a little bit more. But I ALWAYS mix metals. I love mix metals with my jewelry too so I just figured if it works with my wardrobe, why not my house? I will be painting/wall papering my small powder room dark asap. Also my husband and I have been debating the ceiling paint (I want to do the same color all the way up or even paint a pop of color on our vaulted ceiling in the dining room). I think you may have helped me win my argument. 😂😆❤️

Hi Valentina and family ! Yes please take us to the goodwill store. I would not mind seeing what you would suggest as good home decor from a thrift shop. Also I am not hurt by your advice not to decorate for seasons. The stores keep selling loads of it so it must be popular. I am with your mom on this one. What about your patio? And what color are you painting the house?

Talking about holidays decorations I don’t think it’s bad ideal I love you style And yes you are right about the pressure on doing it for everything but I guess when you have toddlers you want to have a little space for them where you can decorate for the occasion
