I hadn't thought of it to avoid a cookie cutter look, but I started shopping online as soon as I could. You can't beat the selection and convenience. An amusing bit - I remember a conference in 1995 foretelling that someday we'd use keyboards and shop from our TV's. That was so futuristic, because we didn't have dial up yet. 😁 It wasn't far off, but it took retailers time to adopt the tech.

I laughed so hard when you said to shop outside your zip code because it reminded me of something that happened to me about 40 years ago. I moved to an area where a lot of the women liked to get together often. I was new there, so they invited me to join them. They planned a shopping event to a new store that was about an hour's drive away and when the big day came, I tagged along. There we were, in a different zip code, but instead of shopping for themselves, they moved around in a group, picking up items, and having a discussion of what everyone thought of each thing. By the end of the journey, everyone (except me) purchased all the exact items, in the exact colors, "to freshen up their homes." I thought that was the funniest thing I'd ever seen. Needless to say, that was the last time I joined their group!
But seriously, Valentina, I love your videos and have learned so much from you. Thank you for supporting your viewers' price points and individuality while still teaching us about design..

I live in a neighborhood with 444 houses. I chose a floor plan and my house was built within 6 months. The builder tried to upsell me on finishes, however, I said nope. The minute I got the key, I changed almost everything but, the bones of the house. A couple of my online places to shop are Jonathan Adler and Jay Strongwater. Some people say huh? because they could not be anymore different and is exactly what I love about them. I grew up in a home where everything matched, and this helped me become a risk taker and not be afraid to mix styles to achieve something that is uniquely me. You never know what you are going to achieve when you are not afraid to take a chance not just with your decor style but, also in life as well.

I painted our living room white, fireplace the same black color you used for yours, and got rid of blinds and put ikea curtains on. ( the same one for your bedroom) and now our living room looks totally different and everyone ask us if we renovated the living room. Obviously I am a huge fan of you and all your ideas about style work like magic. Thank you Valentina. You are the best!!!! 👍👍👍👍👍❤️

We have a dining room and adjoining sitting room that has a unique appearance due to beautiful items like 2 rugs, art and ceramics such as a tea set (a lovely gift received upon our departure) that we bought while we lived in Ramallah, Palestine for 2 plus years. So grateful that we thought to buy several items while there as they bring us joy every day when we walk down the stairs to see the rooms. The rest of the house doesn't have the same vibe by any stretch.

VERY inspirational, thank you! You hit a home run when you said, "If you have a home that YOU enjoy, it really doesn't matter what you're filling it with." That being said, I've never been a fan of "themed" rooms, but always love and respect those that have them, because it's for THEM!

There are so many things I love about this video, probably because I bought a “cookie cutter” townhouse almost a year ago. 😁 Which is also how long I’ve been following you! I am a patient woman and little by little have been taking my time to make this my own and your tips along the way have been so inspiring. Today’s takeaway for me is to remove the blinds in my bedroom and go with curtains. The light will be amazing and quite honestly they are the first things I open (after my eyes) in the morning. Thank you!

Great tips! Another thing, I'm surprised you didn't mention because you have mentioned it in other videos, is source or create some original artwork. I think that goes such a long way in giving a home an individual look. There are lots of ways to find attractive artwork that's unique and won't break the budget but can completely transform a space to reflect your personality

Ten years ago I chose a charcoal gray large tile fireplace when having our home built. 12 feet height. 👍🏻 We were charge extra, money well spent. My brother in law is a electrician 🙌🏻 we replaced all the builder grade lighting and chose med century/Scandinavian. 🙌🏻 Third, hired a millworker and had board and batten put in five rooms. 🥰 The project manager, neighbors, two designers and family were surprised how these decisions made a huge impact. Not inexpensive but our home value increased from $680,000.00 to 1,150,000.00. We upgraded appliances, garage, deck over time. Go for it. 🙌🏻 We had to install blinds on the west of our home. We face west, the sun is intense. They are on a timer. Colorado sun is harsh.

Funny, I love horizontal venetian blinds (loathe vertical) - especially since I live in an apartment. They give soooooo much variety in the type of light they provide: totally open, totally closed, half/partially open, directional up, directional down. Totally agree with curtains over blinds - too dark. Unless the curtains can be pulled COMPLETELY off to the sides of the window.

We had your typical, split level home, once upon a time. Well, my husband’s brother was our realtor and he said since this style of house is so popular, he had great ideas that we did just a bit different when we built it. We built it when people were out bidding for homes. The market was definitely a seller’s market. However, when we sold, it was right before the crash in 2007.
His idea to do our floor plan just a bit differently helped sell our home when the time came.
Another thing he mentioned was for us to build our deck larger than everyone else’s.
When it comes time to sell, it could the one thing that may make our home the deal breaker reason that ours gets chosen.
    Again, he was correct!

Mix it up and avoid the theme (die modern farmhouse - I'm looking at you). This is such great advice. The key is achieving a balance in color and styles, which typically includes removing stuff from the builder including color, door/cabinet hardware, lighting fixtures, light switches/wall plates, trim pieces, etc. I love your black fireplace! What a great accent piece! As for your neighbors updating their interiors - there is no greater pressure than living next to a neighbor that is an interior designer! :)

So agree with all you’ve said here. I have bought everything from antiques to art on 1st dibs and Chairish. I also love drapes! I wasn’t finding the material from the online drapery shops that I wanted. I really like an English cottage style and thought to look up online custom drapes in England
I found a place called Fabrics and Papers. They have tons of different fabrics. I’ve done several rooms with them as well as custom pillows with beautiful fringe. It really has made my home look like a designer helped me... even though I know I probably could not afford one👍

Our fireplace in our basement remodel is on an angled wall. It was the best option for pipes and other reason to put it there. I had the contractor just paint the wall black with no mantle or anything. He said he wasn’t sure about the black at first but really liked it after and we have gotten so many compliments on the minimalist fire place.

Totally agree with rhe blinds and paint colour. Every house we have moved into has been painted what I call "cigarette stain yellow". It must be the Australian version of "builders' beige". Its a grotty, dingy yellowy cream that always looks dirty. It almost makes the house feel depressed. Paint is always the first thing we change and it completely uplifts the feel of the home.

Valentina, your house looks beautiful 😍 you took a cookie cutter home and made it very custom, and reflects your style. Agree with everything you talked about. I can't believe people say ugly things. If they want your advice ,especially . You have definitely demonstrated how to create that beautiful taste, luxurious, and not break the bank. My home has really expensive and very affordable things that all work together. It's like a wardrobe. You can have on expensive pants or shoes with a top from target.
And achieve a fantastic look. I think they go hand and hand. Thank you for introducing me to more affordable items that look really really amazing. Love watching your videos. I hope that you are able to create your on line in the future. And also you have a set schedule of your 3 days every week to watch. Alot of these people, not consistently can do that. Have an awesome trip.
I believe if you can't think outside the box, you will never
Achieve the look you want. And woman , I can't imagine my house looking like everyone else's!!!!! Kathleen

Love it! The first thing we did on our first home was to change all the faucets, light switches and plates, and paint. Just doing that elevated the space. I have been loving lately to hunt at estate sales. It’s amazing how you can find some unique pieces that have a story. Recently we went to an estate sale from a man that used to buy antiques and passed away. That was a huge score!!!!

So fun to see how it looked before. Such a change for the better! 😍 Your house was actually so much better than before in our house. 😅 Now ours is nice as well, after renovations and upgrades. I so agree with what you are saying about not buying all the furniture in the same series, shop or area. I never liked that. Handpicked at second hand and different shops, from cheap to expensive, is the way to get a beautiful home you'll love. Mix it with items you got from travelling to other countries. Those things will also bring back lovely memories. I always buy something nice for the home even if I'm on just a short trip to a nice place during the day. Because it brings back good memories every time I use it. I even got rid of things I once bought in a cheap shop, where they were rude the last time we bought something there that didn't work so wanted to reclaim it. We never went back to that store again and I didn't even want to be remided about it by keeping the few things we already had. So I gave them away. I bought a standard house and had no money to furnish it but over time I got second hand everything including art and decorator items from Op Shops etc and now my house looks like my house. It doesn’t look like everyone else’s which is what I was after.

I love you! Aw! That giggle is priceless.I just moved in to our cookie cutter home in my cookie cutter neighborhood. Lol! This was amazing. The only unique thing about my house is my front door and kitchen. Thank you! Thank you for this video.

❤Love❤ your videos and tips! We’re moving in a few weeks and I am so excited to decorate after many years of raising kids close in age and barely keeping up! My youngest 4 (we have 7) are in high school and I’m ready to figure out my style now!😅

A Woman across the street from my Uncle painted her house Mint Green with Black trim. This was in the 70's when we had 4 Colors. He went over to coplain, they ended up dating and eventually married😜

I love the tip about shopping outside of your zip code. While it’s not a whole epiphany, it is a good reminder to try and find other shops that are maybe on the other side of the country. I love it the PNW but I love a lot of southern decor. I just appreciate the reminder to maybe check out little shops over there! Thank you!

Fantastic tips!! As someone living in an apartment, it would be so appreciated to see some of your ideas on customizing a home where you can’t necessarily change things like fixtures. For instance, I love your point to shop outside of your zip code, 100% going to be thinking about that more!!

I totally agree, here in Canada it’s pretty boring, I see the same clothes everywhere, the same furniture, blah, blah! I love Amazon prime, we’re renovating so I’m enjoying the convenience and the choices available, while I paint my life away. At this point it losing it therapeutic effect! Thanks again❤

You did touch upon this and it’s a bigger fix than painting or changing out light fixtures (both of which make a huge difference) but I’ve always felt getting rid of builder doors and doorknobs makes a huge difference. (you don’t have to tackle all the doors) but to me it is so great to get rid of the cheap raised panel doors and the round low-quality brass knobs. To me that’s a bit of luxury that goes along way.
I wish I had your vision regarding paint color choices. You’re just brilliant. I live in a city apartment and since we don’t have a huge sprawl of space between the bedroom area and the living spaces it’s hard to know how much the rooms need to flow regarding color palette.
