I had the opportunity to meet Sabaton 4 years ago in Seattle after the show. I was briefly speaking to Hannes while in the autograph line and I asked him "So how old is the new guy?" (Tommy was pretty new back then), Hannes smiles real big and asks me " How old do you think he is?" I say "17", he busts out laughing and says something to Tommy in Swedish and then Tommy looks at me and says he's 27!! I told him he is lucky because he has a baby face!

even if the song still is true for most wars, during the 30 years war that the song is about people where drafted and had no say. and since the war was 30+ years long it happened over generations. The father that got drafted and left his 5 year old for the war. well that 5 year old got drafted 10-15 years later to the same war
This, and often it happened through land owners signing young men living on their land up, with the men (or boys) having no say in it. It gave the land owners a tax cut to provide soldiers.
The song is about the 30 years war in ~1600-1648 and they where "conscripts" so it wouldn't have been a volunteer army. It makes the question of why one goes out on an offensive war.

My point was that it's a big difference between a volunteer, a conscript, and I think that these types of soldiers could be even lower than conscripts.
A lot of other peoples died for Sweden in this war. That's why history is an important subject, it hopefully helps people not to repeat the mistakes of previous generations.
Tommy is also the singer and guitarist of the band Majestica. He actually filled in for a sick Joakim on tour. He's a brilliant singer.
"went outside for Sweden" is a direct translation... The correct translation would be: "He went to war for Sweden"... Possibly you could say "He went to fight for Sweden"
I would translate "Gick ut i strid för Sverige" to "Went to battle for Sweden".

Sabaton does this cool thing sometimes where they write two songs (one in English and one in Swedish) with the same melodies and about the same topics/events, but from different perspectives. The Swedish versions are usually in first person and the English versions are usually in third or omniscient/present day.
The companion piece to this is called Three Decades of War and is about how what happened during the Thirty Year War changed Europe forever. (While the Swedish version is from the perspective of a nameless soldier that fought in said war.)
The chorus for the English one goes something like this: “Has man gone insane? The few who remain, will find a way, to live one more day. Three decades of war, it spreads like disease, there’s no sign of peace, religion and greed, caused millions to bleed. Three decades of war!”
I would highly recommend listening to them back to back just to get the full picture and because there aren’t any other bands (that I know of) that do something like this, so it’s just really cool to hear.
This song is about specifically the 30 years war, quite literally sons were borne in the armies "trains" baptized, mustered into the army and killed without ever seeing home.
I want there to be an HBO series about the Thirty Years' War. There will be three seasons, each representing 10 years in the war, and a new main protagonist each season: a priest, a soldier, and a common civilian. We will explore the war from each of their perspectives, beginning with the Defenestration of Prague and ending with the Battle of Prague. The opening theme will be this, in the original Swedish.

The thing most folks miss between the sweedish and english versions of Sabaton's songs is that they are almost two entirely different pieces. The sweedish lyrics are from the participant's perspective, english is from a relative outsider's perspective. Glad you're doing better.
I would rather say that the Swedish version is from a Swedish soldiers view and the English an outsiders view.

So _that_ is what he is saying. I try to learn Swedish (but it's still rather basic) and Sabatons music is quite helpful towards this goal. And though it took a while I did figure out the part of ,,nu sjunger vi tillsammans'' but I never understood what he said before that.

This song speaks to me more in a way that I can't really explain. In History the people that get remembered are the leaders. The Kings, Princes, Generals, etc. The common infantryman is forgotten. Who remembers a farmer from some rural village who joined the army and died fighting for his country? I like studying about the leaders, particularly the Royal history of Medieval England, but I also understand that there were many people in their armies that are forgotten in history. It's unfortunate and little sad to be honest. This song is about honoring and remembering the forgotten ones that never made it home. Particularly the 30 Years War, but personally I feel it could work for everyone.
I see this as a farmer. Get out in the morning, never know when or if ever coming back home, for the sake of feeding people who dont know who you are or what you do... And that goes on for a lifetime and very few understands the sacrifice these days..
Sabaton is without question a vibe and feel band and they're solos reflects this
The 30 Years´ War was a religous war between protestants and catholics beginning in 1618 and ending 1648. Combined with this war are some other conflics, like the last phase of the duch independence war against Spain (1568-1648), a war between Spain and France and between France and Austria. Leader of the catholic league was Austria, leader of the protestant union were frist the duke of the palatinate, then the King of Denmark and then the King of Sweden (Gustavus Adolphus the Great, Sabaton is a swedish Band !) Main battlefield was the Holy Roman Empire (approx. Germany, Netherlands, Belgium and Austria today). Since it was mainly a religious war, the war parties fight to the bitter end, and conscript every man to the army they could find, this can also be 14, 15 or 16 years old boys. In this time a soldier could be for years away from home. (The situation described in the Song, remember no telephone, no videos, no regular postal service, you are not sure whether relatives get an information when you are dead. Communication was unstable and could last months or years )
After the war, more than one third of the german population was dead. 50% of the land was devasted.
In 1648 the parties signed a peace in Münster, Westphalia, not because there was a victor, but because they had not the power to sustain the war. The peace cemented the independence of the protestantic faith, it lays also the fundament of the modern international law.The only actual comparable situation is the mayhem of the ongoing Syrian Civil War.
I read in the comments of another Sabaton reaction that they try to hold a neutral and historical position in their lyrics. Only depicting and not taking sides.
Regarding the political comments, too many are quick to judge and point fingers. My stance is that you can support all soldiers who fight for your country and sacrifices themselves even if you don't support the politics that sends them out on the battlefield. Those two things can and should be separated. Unfortunately too many people don't want to separate them and blame the soldiers for what the politicians are doing.
The thing that makes it even more complicated is that Europe does not hold the same proudness towards veterans as in USA.
In the more welfareish countries, including Canada, Veterans are mostly seen as disabled workers like others who might have had accidents.
Veterans arent put into a golden spot or celebrated, so many. Europeans will be hostile to how Veterans are glorified in modern day.
It was different going to war back then. It was a 30 year old war, so father and son would actually go to war together.
Appreciate turning on the subtitles and what you said about Vets everywhere. Understanding the lyrics hit home hard. Song was already awesome but now its indescribable.

In sweden people historically didn't volunteer, every little village / farm had to have a soldier, that was given a home and some food. When not training he worked for the farmer. Some of the soldiers became soldiers not to defend their country but to get a better life (a home, food, some money). This system also meant that the farmers themselves didn't have to go to war. During the Nordic wars this really didn't work as they had to get more men as they died in battle meaning new, untrained men had to join the army. In 1870 1/3 of the soldiers were over 45 years of age.
In 1901 the conscription system started and since then, with a short break between 2010 and 2017 people are actually forced to join the army.
People can still join freely and there are also the Home Guard, that saw a rise in people wanting to join in february 2022.

19:55 The letter ä in the name Pär is pronounced like ai in air. So it´s more like "Pair" than "Par". The name could also be spelled "Per", but pronounce the same way.

Honorable man. If the people want it right you make it right. That's how you do it! Btw the actual lyrics are even more powerful. Because the translation ofc isn't perfect in it's phrasing, where the rhyming words hit etc but enough to get the point and message across though doesn't hit quite as deep as it does to a Swede (obviously) or someone who understands Swedish well.
The best thing about Sabaton is that they never generalise. This can be applied to any county and any war in history. Tho its meant too be about sweidish wars its still applicible too any county. Tho as a sweed it brings tears too my eyes.

After the 1830s, Sweden had mercenaries in all wars until today. We have never been neutral in war. On paper, we are neutral. We have always supported NATO 100% of the time. But as the war is right now, Finland is forced to Sweden with NATO. It's only a matter of time. Russia has already had time flights, with nuclear weapons, to scare Finland and Sweden into joining.
It is funny since Sabaton won't take sides on their song's. They tell the truth about military history, someone even claimed that No bullets fly was a hoax song. That it didn't happen. I mean think about that.
I am Finnish and Sabaton has done couple songs, winter war and about white death, also the song about man who served 3 armies. He was in Finnish military at first. And history channel is the best of them. And Andy Reid El got to act in unlikeable soldier. It was good acting. Thx for this react Oldskulenerd, this is better in Swedish version, even i can sing it in concerts. They have English version of this also but it's not nearly as good as this version.

Thank you for your reaction! You talked about Ragnarök and that it's dubbed to English. That is so confusing for me. In Sweden we use subtitles. Using dubs must lose a lot of the feeling of the original acting...I want to hear the actor talking, not another person. Isn't it possible to change spoken language and get subtitles in the settings? It works on Netflix in Sweden. I know because sometimes I don't want subtitles, just listen to the spoken English. But I watch a lot of films and series from other countries that languages I don't understand and then subtitles in Swedish is necessary 😄

It was not voulentary in Sweden at that time it was the law to go out at war and battle for the king and country.
It was like that until the early 2000 so.
Every man in Sweden did the "Värnplikt" = military duty.

-I have a theory. The best benefit a country can provide to its military, or that a military can provide to its warfighters, is to bring them home alive and safe. Due to the nature of war, this is very difficult to guarantee. The second is to make sure that they're remembered. Maybe they can tell after they're gone, or maybe they can't. We do it anyway. One of the many things that makes Sabaton great is that they accomplish this, and they do it in a way that's now reaching millions of people and making them CARE. Even the ones that didn't care before.
I think the military service back in that time was more or less mandatory. This was the time of the 30 year war (the Great War) and they had entire families traveling during that war and kids were born, drafted and killed during that war, never even seeing the homeland. That is supposedly where the name of the song comes from, a lifetime at war.
They might play "A lifetime of war" instead, which is essentially the same song except it's from an observer's perspective instead of that of a participant.
Also, it's in english, which makes more sense in the US.

You have to remember that once Sweden was a mighty power in the northern parts of europe. We went to war in Poland, Russia, Norway and many other places.
That was not an easy time.
Today we live a neutral and peaceful life in the far north but we can still relate to how it once was when we men and boys went to war never to see home again.

Swedish airforce was fully integrated with a all volentary force, but it have become compulsary (and limited) conscription agan a few years back, and that is still for men only.
They won't play this song on the US tour. They only play it in Sweden and Norway nowadays. So no need to even hope for it. Luckily I live in Sweden so I've seen it live a few times now :)

You have to factor in the "timeframe" of what a song is written about, this song is about, as far as I understand, the Swedish Cavalry in the 17th century (in the 30 year war) and then only men were conscripted.
I'm sure Sabaton would not have used "father and son" if they wrote about some recent event, this is only my interpertation anyways.

If they play this song in Texas, they'll play the English version. I think they only sang this one in Swedish in Scandinavia, or it may only have been in Sweden.
This is not about the US so I don't know why anyone would make it political. This was a time when Sweden was the lone superpower in Europe (and Asia) and no one chose to participate, they were drafted into war.

In this case, I believe that some research would have been in order. It's about a war in Swedish and european history - and the point of view from a single conscripted soldier, usually a boy or otherwise man. Let's not confuse this with todays politics or todays volounteers. They were forced into combat, and the song literally is asking questions that a soldier laying on the deathbed might ask.
There are two versions of this song, one in swedish (This one) and one in english. And the lyrics are quite different, and the meaning of them is different.
I only wish that the subtitles had better English. The song is epic!
