That's right -- we are STILL talking about the new releases. Why is this? Well because they are so special and because it was a rather big year! Will Rolexes reinvented Cellini line be a hit? On paper? Doesn't seem like it...but let's see what everyone's wallets end up doing when the time comes. The watch is gorgeous, and well done, of course. However, is that enough for Rolex to duke it out with the big boys? We aren't so sure.

JLC Master Ultra Thin Moonphase in Rose Gold goes for 21.7K. That's the precious metal dress piece I'd get if I had the money and was in that price range.

Problem with the $24,000 Rolex 1908 is that it's in the same price range as much better watches from Patek, VC and JLC.
I'm not so sure because most people aren't watch people and most people like Rolex. The problem with the Cellini range is that people want a Rolex not a Cellini. I think this new Rolex is great because it's got the nod to history it's a dress watch but it's also kind of a sports all rounder It's a kind of thing that a wealthy wife would get their husband who doesn't know anything about watches I think there's a lot of people like that. So beautiful watch my hunches it'll do well could be wrong.

It’s not the first rolex with open caseback, check those square vintage prince Cellini and you’ll be amazed with their finishing :)

1908 is a great $16k watch
I think that 1908 looks very nice. I really appreciate the clear case back. My only issue is with Rolex, I think it competes with itself. So for less than the price of the 1908 you can have a OP or DJ and fit it on a nice leather with a clasp (maybe Rolex themselves can sell you one of theirs) and now you have just ad nice of a dress watch for a fraction of the price.
It's simply too big IMO. Large dress watches always have issues with proportions and wearability, and I really don't see this Rolex wearing elegantly on wrists under 7.5 inches.
There has been cellinis with open casebacks in the past, so neither the platona nor the 1908 is the first Rolex with an open caseback. Think Rolex Cellini Prince line.
Cellini Prince was open caseback but it was weird AF. So these are the 1st "proper" open caseback

Genta is to watches as Shelby is to cars. Hopefully Genta doesn't go FULL Shelby, but we'll see.
I worked at a Rolex dealer in the late 90's and they made the dealers carry a set number of watches that never sold including Cellini. We simply loaded and unloaded them daily into the showcase. We will see how they sell as a branded "Rolex" .
You kids were so wrong...Rolex restricted inventory so much on the 1908 it was a hit and selling over retail!

No, it's very much the new Cellini
It's one of my favorite watch designs, especially in recent years. But the price tag confuses me for a brand just entering that section of the market (or rather re-entering). Maybe I'm underestimating the Rolex following but I feel like even interested buyers will struggle to be confident in that purchase over something similar from a brand with tenure. For that realm of style and price I'd seriously look at it, but I'd probably end up buying a JLC or a VC.
Thank you for pointing out the difference (or lack thereof) between the Submariner and the Yachtmaster. The Yachtmaster always had me scratching my head.
Christian spelt it out with the 1908. The Cellini was a much better dress watch with a moon phase complication. Heck there was even a Dual Time version. The 1908 is a simple 3 hander and they don''t even give you a Mercedes hours hand. The reason why the ADs couldn't sell the Cellini was because no grey dealer wanted them. They couldn't resell them so they didn't trade them.

The platinum bezel yacht master had a totally different case to the sub, with turned down lugs, it was much more comfortable to the sub which I also owned and was to me a better watch than the sub, pity there was not enough contrast to the dial/handset and was difficult to read the time which was why I sold it.
If the Cellini moonphase had an open back case I’d buy it.
Didn't the yacht master have a separate countdown to "start of race" sub dial ?,count down to start of regatta ?.
The issue is … does Rolex want to have a dress watch in their lineup despite its relative “failure”?
Patek is dedicated to being a more all-rounder company. Audemars keeps the door open. Rolex dabbles in that pond but the relative lack of success hurts their fragile ego.
PP 5296 is in the mid-20's which isn't a stretch from the 1908. Too many others for them to compete, especially in pre-owned market.
I think that LVMH might be releasing these Gerald Genta pieces for the purposes of keeping the trademark alive. If they own the rights, then they have to use it every 5(10?) years in order or they could risk losing it.
For 22K, you can get a Vacheron Patrimony in yellow gold, or for a bit more the far superior Historique Triple Calendrier.
So why didn’t they make the Sub (vs YM) in Titanium?
Take this gshock and make it analog, mechanical, feminine and gold. That’s what i see with that GG watch you keep showing.
I mean over the last year or so, I’ve gotten lucky with my AD. I have gotten the call twice. As recently as last week i got the call for the 124060 Sub. Couldn’t have been happier to drive 5 minutes down the road and pick it up. They are out there, they are ready to be sold and they are coming into AD’s! Keep the faith and you WILL get lucky!
I like the 1908 but won’t spend over 20k. Make a steel one and charge 12k and I’m in

As a Rolex President owner, I was extremely disappointed in the trash from Rolex. Even Timex would have been ashamed of the emoji wheels!

The 1908 comps mentioned are not quite equivalents. More comparable examples would be the Patek 6119G and 6119R models as the have a textured bezel more akin the the coin-edge-esque bezel of the 1908. The bezels make a BIG difference. The smooth bezels of the Lange’s are far more boring in my opinion and the JLC’s are rectangular, so not a comparison at all.
I think this is the first time I’ve heard someone refer to LVMH as an underdog. 😅 hahaha. But in all seriousness, fantastic video as always! Definitely some food for thought!

Regarding the new “celini”, you guys are obviously right that there are so many better watches to buy at that price point. The market for that watch I think is very rich people who don’t do any research and know nothing about watches; They just want to go into the store and buy a “dress” Rolex and walk out. They trust the brand blindly, and the brand is ripping them off frankly.
My AD confirmed a month ago, they were going to get VERY, VERY, VERY few titanium pieces.
Ur ad can’t confirm anything . They are allocated with watches by rolex. That’s how rolex manipulates the supply , hope this clarifies .

The Sinn U50 and T50 do not wear like a 41mm, more like a 39. I have a 7” wrist and they wear insanely well. Not big, not clunky, and not heavy, even on bracelet.
It’s just a rebranding of the Cellini, which never did well. It’s like changing the lipstick color on a pig; it’s still a pig.
Also, I am not sure why Rolex expect consumers to understand their history, if they actually took the time to educate consumers about their archive of dress watches, ppl will look at the dress watch line very differently. Rolex is such a distinctive/darling brand of the industry, anything compelling in terms of aesthetics will most likely be adopted by the long line of pyscho fanatics that feel they need a dress watch. I think the new cellini is pleasing and with the added case back and effort in the new calibre as supposed to the older one m makes this one some what difficult to write off. JLC will never be Rolex to Rolex fans
I’m really missing the fascination with Gerald genta designs. 99% of them I don’t like including the Nautilis top of the ugly list. Rolex 1908 I’d say is a deal at that price. Good watch from worlds most famous brand. Unknown brands outside the watch world like vacheron or jlc are asking the same or more money
There’s far greater margin in Bvlgari jewelry than a Cellini. There’s 35~40% gross margin in a Rolex vs a minimum of 75% in jewelry…. Why does Cartier sell a 31 gram, gold, Trinity bracelet for $13,300 USD. 31 grams of gold is currently worth $1,950 USD. Sure there’s labor, marketing, distribution, salaries and other burdened costs but…

I think people are missing the mark on the 1908. People arent going to buy it because nobody will know its a rolex. They dont have an iconic dress watch like they do with sports models, so they have nothing to pull from. And they arent going to be able to make people buy it because its priced too high. What are they going to say? "Buy this $23k 1908 so you have the pleasure of buying a $15k Sub"?

The 1908 is hands-down my favorite Rolex in a long-time. To your point, it just cost too much for the average buyer. But if I had those funds for luxury watch, it absolutely would be on my list.
