Very impressive but I think a better description would be "improvising in 9/8 by grouping in 2/3/4" because 9/8 is much simpler when you play it in 3 groups of 3 (that way it would just be a triplet with 3 triplets inside)
I definitely think the groupings he’s using make 9/8 more interesting. Playing it as 3 groups of 3 eighths can only be interesting for so long. Great playing, man!
