Robben Ford and Mark Ford and the other brothers are truly the airs of the original Butterfield Blues Band. It's an example of that rare thing--great playing where you can tell where they got it from and yet marvel at what brilliant sweetness and personality they bring to their playing. Mark Ford is one of the most consistenly interesting harmonica players, pushing the Butterfield style of wide open improvisation and long lines to flawlessly, lyric areas. Jam on!
I happily got hip to the Ford bros. in the early 70's thanks to either KSAN or KPFA in the Bay Area, and this is one of the first songs I learned to play in the late 60's. I used to go see Mark play at Barney Steele's in Redwood City every week. WOW! He rocked it then and he's still rockin' it now. Thanks Mark, you just keep inspiring me to cut it loose and let it go!
If you have never seen Mark live, treat yourself before you leave this planet. First time I saw him I just stood there with my mouth open thinking you can't do that with a harp but yet there he was right in front of me. Beyond words when he's live. TRUST ME !!!
Laying in the back of an old jeepney in Manila harbor Philippines I was listening to a blues tune on the radio, and I thought I recognised the style.Mark Ford of course. An international talent indeed. So glad to have been introduced to the blues through these three.Steve was my brother -in -law.May he and Jennifer rest in peace.Michael
Marc Ford for my money is the most interesting, emotive, exciting and inventive player going bar none. Also to quote his brother Pat " there's this filial connection" which makes the band so great.
Didn't get to see him at the KKJZ Blues 'Bash'. They promised me I could dance if I paid $300 for the VIP tickets. 2 songs into the opening act, they sent a bouncer to sit me down, so I left. Shoulda known bettern to go up on the 'Miracle Mile' with millionaire F's. This is Kool, but I couldn't stay there just on principle alone.
Ha I thought this guys going to cook on this and then just like Butterfield plays worksong wrong wings it and does not play 5OB, which is simply not good enough.
