    I was living up north in Sweden a few years ago. One day I was out walking in the village, feeling a bit depressed. Suddenly, out of nowhere, two Viggen roar past me at tree top level and bank over the village. After that I didn't feel depressed any more... :-D

    Ahhh the sound of Viggen! One of few planes that scares the shit out of car alarms. I did my military service in Sweden, in an Air Traffic Control Tower on an Air Force Base. It was very sound proof but the vibrations of starting Viggens made everything loose move around on the table and pens etc fell to the floor.

    The most impressive and powerful craft done by my country.
    And so for the look, futuristic!

    This was a real "nail in the eye" for the Soviets during the cold war, with its super powerful reaction-engine making it possible to use short roads as take-off runways and counter Soviet jets quickly far out in the Baltic Sea. Its a cool plane due to its quite different wing and engine construction. It is loud as hell though, as stated in the clip...a seriously cool piece of equipment.

      Indeed. I imagine that put a huge dent in the American self confidence.

    The Viggen had a fly-by-wire system extremely advanced for it's time. It enabled it to have things like radar guided automatic cannon fire (explained to me by a pilot as a very violent experience under use). It also had a exceptionally good radar enhanced by the fact that it was tapped in to other Viggen fighters and the ground based systems.
    And as mentioned, it's the only aircraft that has a confirmed "shoot down" of a SR-71. Worth to note is that armed with the RBS-15 system, it was completely capable of engaging aircraft carriers with likely success of sinking them.

    When you experience it for real it has a deep booming voice, louder than even Brian Blessed :-)

    Awesome. The video doesn't quite do just to the sheer, ear-splitting noise of this fast jet. But thanks for posting it!

    The Swiss Air Force were booked to fly in Shannon and Bray. We were notified a few weeks before the event that the Swiss Air Force had FTLs in place and the schedule required a rest day for pilots on the Saturday hence no display in SNN. Efforts are always ongoing to get top class acts into our displays. The Red Arrows have declined perform in Bray as they say they already have an Irish show in Portrush in the same month. Look out for bray 2016 as there is a few loud surprises already confirmed.

    When i was a little boy, i used to get overflown by these now and again. I can tell you a weak heart would have stopped, when they came out of nowhere at high speed 75 meters above you.
    It did become illegal in many areas.... not that strange really =)

    Its great to see an airshow in Ireland every summer, I can remember going to the one 1990 in Shannon & it was fantastic...but this one could have been alot better..It was nothing compared to the 1990 one .I attended this one ..as did other enthusiasts I know & we all shared the same views. No static display on the ground..no modern military aircraft displaying , no foreign military aerobatics team like the Red Arrows ...even Salthill had helicopters on the ground ..which is not an airport/airfield... Back in 1990 we had in Shannon. F-16, A-10, F-4. C-5 ,C-130, Tornado , Frecce Tricolori & many more.. Maybe it was down to the anti war protesters getting their way.. But a better effort could have been made to get more stuff in.. The Swiss Air Force came to Bray the following day So why did Shannon not get the Swiss in as we had them in the country that weekend also.!!!! I enjoyed the Viggen, Hunter & Mustang...but thats about it..

      265justy Yeah, not enough fighter jets like the Viggen and too many propeller planes with smoke coming out of them, gets a bit boring after a while.

      +265justy Keep in mind that this aircraft is being operated by Swedish Air Force Historic Flight which is a non-profit association, so they rely on the contract they get when they are hired, due to the costs that these machines require not many airshows can afford them, the airshow that rents them need to pay all expenses such as gas there + back and hotel + food, so imagine the cost to rent this plane, just to fully fuel Viggen costs 40.000 SEK which is 2900 GBP, from Såtenäs to Irland and back plus the display so estimate 120.000 SEK which is 8700 GBP, just for gas, plus hotel and everything. If they want more planes which SwAFHF have to offer Shannon (in this case) need to calculate and estimate how many visitors that will come, the more planes the more visitors, so it's a balance there.

      +ESPirits87 I think your missing my point... What I am saying is that the standard of airshows in Ireland has become very poor compared to what is was 10 +years ago.. Airshows in the rest of Europe are far better.. The Air Spectaculars that were held in Ireland threw the 1980's & 90's were very very good... but now ...not so good !!!

    • @christerolsson4020
      @christerolsson4020 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +ESPirits87 The distance between Ireland and Såtenäs is well within the transport range without additional tank and you fly in economy speed so fuel costs approximately £ 2,000 per direction. One advantage of Viggen is that it does not require a large maintenance staff when visiting and using the now standard Jet -A fuel and can be easily refueled at most airports .
