Ashlynne Eaton wow you have such a pretty smile! I would get rid of my hairbrush because I have really thick curly hair and brushing it just makes it frizzy but my mom said it’s good to get rid of the dead hair so I still have it. On the other hand, I couldn’t imagine living without a bike! Great video :D

Right!? I have the paperwhite since it gives off way less blue light than regular tablets. I read 50+ books a year so it is WAY more environmentally friendly for me to use ebooks than physical books (as long as you don't keep purchasing a new kindle).

Iwona I totally get ya! I've had my kindle since 2013 and it still works so why would I get rid of it? I read a combination of real and kindle books so I like being able to choose, but I also use my kindle at night time to run meditations in bed because it works better than my phone for that, and having the kindle near me I'm not getting text notifications or anything so my zen is NEVER interrupted! Yay for the kindle family :)

I read a TON, and I try to read books either from the library, from friends and family, or on my kindle. I borrowing first, then buy it on kindle if I find myself going back to it often. Otherwise, I take any notes or quotes in OneNote (because I am a notetaker), and write down any books I particularly liked and want to remember. I've saved SO much money and space this way, and I still get a bunch of variety and the feel of paper books without spending nearly as much money or having space permanently taken up.

Actually drinking wine from a regular glass ou from a large wine glass, especially red wine, it's completely different. 🍷😍 With this type of glasses there are more wine exposed to oxygen and oxidation promotes layers of flavour. In Portugal we call it "let the wine breathe".
Of course if you embrace wine as a living being (ahahahah) glasses will be very important. If you don't drink at all, it's just a glass.
This is just to clarify that wine glasses aren't just branding ou company's marketing.
Ps: I don't have a hair brush too 😘 I love your videos

I loved this video! It’s really nice hearing things others don’t own, so you can reflect and think about wether you use that thing or need it. One thing I don’t own is a traditional nightstand. I have a small chest of drawers that I keep on one side of my bed, but it’s not meant as a nightstand nor do I use it as one. I keep my phone on my desk at night and I can put my current book on the floor.

I considered using dry shampoo when I was still using drugstore shampoos because my hair was really shampoo dependent and I had to was it every single day or it would get greasy. After transitioning to a shampoo bar I find that I can go several days without my hair looking or feeling greasy and I would much rather wash my hair or just throw it up in a bun than to buy a whole new product that I could live without.

    • @JamieM470
      @JamieM470 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Same here, but in a pinch, if you've had a super hectic day and don't have time for a shower, you can rub a bit of cornstarch wherever it looks greasy.
Very inexpensive and very effective, without all the questionable ingredients in dry shampoo. Activated charcoal powder can be used for dark hair.

I own an iPad with the pencil. I’ve been using iPads since 2011. Did my whole boards review in it. Now, I use it as a notebook, an eReader, and like a laptop because it’s easier to carry around and boots faster. I only use my laptop for work or if I’m doing something that’s just more convenient with a bigger screen, keyboard and mouse.

Ashlynne: "I don't own any musical instruments."
Me, a musician: uhmm... let's start counting

    • @TriviRocks
      @TriviRocks 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

Haha! Musicians would rather have ONLY musical instruments around, and sleep on the floor... They're a need, not toys or amusement. You have to be a musician to understand this 👍

      @kimhoa7633 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Wtf you own 3 pianos and 2 violins or what. Musical instruments are costly as hell, i only own 1 piano and i spend a fortune anually to take care of it

    • @TriviRocks
      @TriviRocks 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@kimhoa7633 Same in my country. It depends where you happen to be. In some places, there are cheaper options, and people buy them as sources of short-term amusement. Ukeleles, guitars, flutes, and so on...

    • @kimhoa7633
      @kimhoa7633 4 ปีที่แล้ว

@@TriviRocks believe me, musical instruments are costly no matter what region you are in the world. In Vietnam, only wealthy privileged families can afford a professional instrument like a string instrument, piano, harp. So having one is TOO enough. Or maybe the guy above is a pop musician so he owns several light-weighted instruments

I don't own a big vacuum cleaner. Gave it away as soon as I realized I haven't used it once since I purchased a hand-held one. It's so much easier to just use a broom and then vacuum whatever dust is left, than getting the whole vacuum cleaner out, plugging it in, dragging it around the room... Plus it saves so much space!

Thank you for this video! It is so interesting to me to see what people use and don't use, especially common items to most households. I made my list based on what you said and then added some common items that my household doesn't own that weren't mention.
    I don't own:
    - Belts
    - Dry shampoo
    - Cookbooks
    - CDs
    - Generic art (I own very little, but don't buy any anymore.)
    - Fake plants
    - Standing mixer/handheld electric mixer
    - Foundation
    - Niche glasses
    - Cotton pads, makeup wipes, etc.
    - Air Fresheners
    - Bracelets
    - Bath accessories (I do have epson salt from 2 years ago that I am still trying to use up, but it was gifted to me.)
    I do own:
    - Hairbrush (girl, my hair is too thick haha)
    - Tablet (Since I read 50+ books a year, it is more environmentally friendly for me to use a kindle paper white. My daughter also owns her own.)
    - Bike (3: my husbands, mine, and my daughters.)
    - Musical Instruments
    - Calendar (I actually tried to de-clutter it today but my husband was very adamant we kept it :D)
    - Pads/Tampons (I currently have them but once I use them up I am switching to a cup. Just have to wait until I am done being pregnant ha!)
    - Coffee maker (I think my husband and I would suffer without it! I love how mine has a button for iced coffee.)
Things you didn't mention that are common things I don't own:
    - Hair dryer
    - Any dressers/chests (we are a family of 3 almost 4 to)
    - Dryer (In the process of selling/donating it. I know not having one is common for people not in the US)
    - Bed frames (we do own a crib)
    - Cleaning supplies (I just use vinegar and water in a glass spray bottle)
    - Ironing board
    - Area rugs
I am sure there are more but just to help people think some more about what they need and don't! We can live off of a lot less, but sometimes it is hard with kids :)

possibly one of my most favorite videos, so well thought out. I feel the second I get rid of my last belt- I will somehow need it, but I'm feeling motivated to get rid of it. Also, I did get rid of my iPad, and I regret it as it was so nice to have a screen bigger than my cell phone but not having to bring my laptop on weekend get aways or beach trips (which is my life). Your hair issues are the same as mine, and I so understand and agree with dry shampoo and brushes. I do have a brush but rarely use it.

I was glad to find out that I also don't own almost any of the items listed by you, and moreover, I realized what I had left over and could replace, such as the menstrual cup that I didn’t have time yet to research, purchase and start using. As decorations, I have not and have never had that plastic Earth globe that is in almost every home. I also don't have any nail polish or acetone. Recently I gave up vacuum cleaning and I am trying to stick to only wiping and sweeping 🧹 the floor. Let’s see how that goes!
By giving up the vacuum cleaner I am also trying to reduce the noise I make as much as possible and trying to do as silently as possible most of the house chores. Helps me relax and listen to my thoughts 💭 🙃

A majority of these things I don’t own either! I love the look of real plants and I definitely enjoy taking care of them. The one staple I do rely on is my dry shampoo. My hair will unfortunately get oily within less than a day and dry shampoo helps me to wash it less since my hair is pretty thin as well it helps it appear thicker and not greasy.

In my twenties I did not own many of these things. It allowed me to easily travel the world and work. I enjoyed that season. Part of simplifying our lives is having the things that are important to us and our family. We have original art work and value this, we also have many musical instruments, cello, trumpet and piano that are used on a daily, weekly basis. Not sure what we don’t have.....we don’t have many clothes, we don’t use throw away paper towels and napkins, air freshener. We definitely have bikes and use them. We also have a range of other wheeled things such as skateboards, rollerblades and scooters, these however are unlikely to be replaced as our children grow out of them unless they are important to them. We also chose not to move to a bigger house.... we simplified instead. Our decisions helped us pay of our house early approx ten years. I recently cleaned out the garage.... another space for the family to use to work out, play or create things.

Hi Ashlynne. I stopped buying cotton wool products about a year ago as they're so wasteful. I now use chopped up old flannels/ washcloths, which work even better because of their rougher texture. I also haven't really missed using my primer or foundation during lockdown, so I might get rid of those, too. x

I would love to hear of some desires of what you would like to have more of or maybe some regrets of what you have decluttered in the past and would want back. I think it would shed some light on the fact it's ok to make mistakes or to want to own more of something. I feel like minimalism has some downfalls or shortcomings that you could put across in a thoughtful way. There's so much good from minimalism and I hear so much about it from TH-camrs but as a realist, I like to hear the bad too. This is from a 10yo minimalist who decluttered the toaster and then had a family of 5 and constantly burnt toast under the grill 😅 It's ok to make mistakes 🙈 Something I'm truly glad about though is that I made a rule to only have one tv in our house - I haven't looked back and regretted it. Thanks so much for putting up such great content. Look forward to your next video. Jen

When I say "bad" I mean in the apparent bad that may come from decluttering something you now miss or the desires that may come from having less like wanting more experiences, etc. They don't have to be "bad" but maybe shed some light on the darker side of minimalism or some "side effects"! A few examples for me: I find I can't buy something straight away and have to deliberate for ages, I have less friends because I realised how toxic some of my "friendships" were, the fact that I spend a shed load more money on experiences than I have ever done in my twenties, I have more pets because animals bring our family so much joy but extra responsibility, I work in a job that is meaningful but pays less than what I got in another, I reuse items constantly but my laundry and dishwashing demands are higher, my photos are all digitalised but I find I take more photos than I have ever done to get the "best" one, it takes me minutes to tidy the house but the kids will take less time to mess it up again 🙈 The list could go on!

I have one belt, one hairbrush (but no comb), dry shampoo purely for those dayjob days I oversleep, would happily get rid of all cookbooks but my husband won’t let me, still have a CD player in my car but have never had a music subscription, don’t use foundation or concealer or… anything aside from eyeliner and mascara. I only use make up wipes for my art+craft clear stamps, and need to go through my bracelets as I rarely wear them. We don't have a coffee maker, but do have a mixer we use regularly.

I tricked myself into drinking less coffee by not owning a coffeemachine. I own several frenchpresses and espressomakers for the stove all in different sizes. It makes a pretty display. And brewing coffee this way makes a nice morning ritual. What's funny, since I started decluttering, minimizing/organizing better, I drink way more coffee, because I see less work in preparing and cleaning the coffeemakers.

I stopped using cotton pads and use the washable ones. I try to buy stuff without packaging. Shampoo and conditioner bars and anything for the body and hair. Not 100% successful yet. I am starting over after a break up and once I get my new home I’m going to be so minimalist and conscious of everything that I’ll bring into my home. I’m so excited. Also I want to bring more environmentally friendly products into my kitchen. No more thin foil etc. I’ve seen more and more re usable products lately so I’m glad it’s more available now.

    1. Belts: +
I own two of them (they are just in different colours) because my weight isn't very stable. I actually lose and gain it every 6-7 months, and I can't buy new pants every time it happens lol.
    2. Hairbrush: +
I own two of them (the first one is at home, and the second one is at work 'cause they're made of wood and metal and are quite heavy to carry in the backpack all the time).
    3. Tablet: -
I had one earlier, but now I don't.
    4. Dry shampoo: +
...but I don't really use it a lot, only sometimes.
    5. Cookbooks: -
I never even thought of buying one 'cause I can find anything on Google lol...
    6. Bike, skateboard, etc.: -
I actually own a bike, but it's in my parents' town now, so it isn't actually mine anymore :D But I think of buying one because it's just soooo fun and convenient when you can go for a picnic, for example, and not carry all the things on your back. And I really enjoy that feeling when you're riding very fast :)
    7. CDs, music subscription: +/-
I don't own any CDs now, but Spotify is my everything, my life was really a bit worse without it. I'm a musician, so I need this like oxygen lol.
    8. Generic art: -
I don't own any art. I'm renting an apartment, and there are some paintings here, but they're quite old, and I think they're painted by some local artists. But that doesn't count, I guess, since they're not mine at all :)
    9. Fake plants: -
...but I own hundreds of real plants, my apartment looks like a forest :D
    10. Standing mixer: -
I own a mixer, but it's not a standing one. And I don't own other kitchen devices, not even a microwave :D
    11. Foundation: -
I owned one, but now I don't. I don't need it anymore 'cause my skin is clear :)
    12. Niche glasses: -
I own one glass. There are some more in the apartment that I'm renting, but they're not mine, and I don't use them at all.
    13. Makeup wipes: +
I don't wear any makeup, but I use them for removing nail polish :D
    14. Air fresheners: -
I use essential oils and natural incenses instead :)
    15. Musical instruments: +++
I'm a musician lol, so how can I not own them...
    16. Bracelets: -
    Totally agree with Ashlynne.
    17. Bath accessories: +
I take baths sometimes, so I own some salts.
    18. Calendar: -
    I've got a journal and a smartphone lol :D
    19. Pads, tampons: -
I don't have periods. I'm 22, but I was born without an uterus, so I don't need period products :)
    20. Coffee maker: -
I like coffee, but I drink it once a year lol, 'cause I'm a bit allergic to it.

Some things that I don't own:
    1. Nail polish
    2. Smart watch, Fitbit or tablet
    3. Q-tips or cotton rounds
    4. Tissues (I was given some handkerchiefs a year or two ago for Christmas and I really enjoy using those!)
    5. A bed skirt or matching bed set (I only have one quilt, and I like to use mismatched pillow cases)
    6. Dry shampoo
    7. Hair dryer or other hot tools
    8. Bath and Body Works products. I used to own a lot of their lotions or shower gels, and they just have a smell that's too strong for me. I do still have a couple bottles/containers that I'm trying to use up, but other than that, most of what I have now either has no scent at all or something more lightweight.

For me, I like having a tablet b/c I primarily use my laptop for gaming and my phone for social media/messaging. I use my tablet for the ease of video chatting and Netflix watching.
