Actually, I have been doing this for many years. Only owning one of a certain item. One hairbrush, one bottle of perfume, one pair of sneakers that I wore for over a decade. I bought my first laptop and used it for over 10 years until it finally gave out. I'm now on my 2nd laptop. I drove one of my cars [ a 1988 Honda Accord ] for over 17 years.
I’ve been looking into minimalism and it’s really helped me declutter things and refrain from buying certain things- although I cant see myself living a complete minimalist lifestyle, I’ve paired down quite a bit-
I love being a minimalist because I can easily manage my things. Also I never replace if it’s still working and useful. Same here I only have one of those you mentioned. My running shoes is 7years now and still in good condition and I love it 🥰
The moment I stopped putting on skincare on my face, my face cleared up within days. I wash my face in the shower every other day and moisturize afterwards. That does the trick and my makeup goes on soooo well now 😊
Honestly owning one of something makes me take care of it more. I've been able to fit all my hair, makeup, office and electronic stuff in one small desk. I've gotten my fiance to declutter and we've decided to find a small affordable house because we dont own a lot anymore. (:
We have one TV in our home: the living room. My husband and I each have one of those wheelie cases and they works fine for us. I own one brush and no comb. My sunglasses are prescription and live in my car :P Make-up-wise, i have 2 eyeliners, one mascara, 2 eye shadows and 1 eyebrow pencil. And 2 nail varnishes. I cant say the same about self care products. I have two places where I have to live. So I own one comb, 1 cleanser, 1 moisturizer, 1 red and 1 nude lipstick, 1 serum, 1 shampoo n conditioner, in each of my apartments. It a pain to even think of it!
I owned over 30 perfumes 🙈🙈🙈 I managed to reduce my collection to around 8. Still too much. 😅 My goal is 2 still a way to go. The Armani si is my absolute favorite fragrance 🤩🤩

Kitchen utensils are HUGE to own a multitude of in the house. Etiquette says we are always preparing for someone or a group to come over. A kitchen is a hoarding zone for large quantities. Thanks for sharing Ashlynne!
I don’t have a car and can’t get to the store often so I don’t want to get stuck when something runs out , but I’m still trying to down size but that is so great for you 👏🏻👍🏻
I also only own 1 brush &1 comb, 1 perfume(and it’s a small sized one), macbook pro, and my family(we are only 3) we only have 1 TV in the whole household. I don’t want TVs in bedrooms. But what I cannot even fathom that you only have 1 pair of is the roots sweatpants. I love them. My husband and son has lots of them too and we love using them especially during the winter season I like that nordgreen watch. I might consider getting one, I just have to save up for it
Ashlynne Eaton oh that makes sense. I live in Toronto, so it’s freezing cold most of the time & roots is a very popular brand here. Btw, you are very pretty!
I own one pair of winter boots; one cleanser, foundation, mascara; one casual coat. I need two sets of utensils in the kitchen because nonstick pans don't like metal utensils. No sunglasses. Prescription eye glasses. Only one car. I don't drive. Kathy B.
I love this idea so much! I am binging alllll your videos because I have just started on my minimalism journey. one thing I only own one of is also a brush and comb! once mine has seen its end, I am going to purchase a bamboo brush :)
Aside from scissors, (our kids craft daily and often more than 1 person needs scissors at the same time) I only own one, or none, of each of the items you've listed as well. No makeup, no perfume, no dress pants.
This is such great ideas. I think you are my new go to to learn how to downsize. You are such a sweet little lady. At 55 i can say this. It will be fun to keep learning from you
I'm working on using up beauty and shower products until I only have one... I currently only have one conditioner and used to have one bar of soap for the shower until I was gifted another for my birthday, which I will use once the one I have now runs out. I also stopped buying shaving cream altogether and just use soap or conditioner or shampoo instead.
Same. Though mine has where you can lift the can off the actual vaccum if you want to carry it up or around a few feet away, though I never use it that way. Why get a handheld when the regular one has a hose?
Would you be able to do a video on your favourite intentional living youtubers? It’s my favourite type of content and would love to know what creators you like x
I also find having 1 of each makeup type better, because the product gets used more quickly (use it before it goes “off”, less time for bacteria to grow).i also find I’m more mindful with my purchases and can spoil myself with better quality products that I love. I also found the Clarisonic makeup application brush has reduced how many brushes I need, and means you can use less product (which results in better application, better skin and saving more money!)
I enjoy your videos, thank you for your hard work in producing them. May I just recommend, as a fellow curly hair girl, ditch the bristled brush and get a Denman brush 💯. It will easily detangle and also define your curls. You'll notice less friz using one. Literally that and finger combing is all I do. And they last forever.
Could you possibly do videos of some of your favorite products? Like makeup, beauty, cleaning, etc products. I’ve recently found your channel and I’m loving the content! Thank you!
Can you do a video with what y'all do for work & how you got there. I'd like to see a video all about business, budgeting and saving. Also a video about selling the items we declutter. I started my minimal journey in the last year and am hitting a road block. I don't want to give away everything for free but don't know how to get rid of all the stuff I've accumulated throughout my life.
I learned my lesson with owning multiple makeup items. I’ve had some of them for well over their expiration dates and should probably throw half of my stuff away but I can’t stomach not getting my money’s worth so I’ve been on a makeup no buy to get thru all of what I have. Saves me so much money.
I'd love to see what you actually own multiples of! Is there anything which you've sometimes thought is not strictly "minimalist" to have more than one of but it add value for you?
My multiples would be toothpaste. I need more than one. Using one for a couple days then switch to a different brand for a couple days then go back to previous and so on. Same story with the shampoos and deodorants. No eau de toilette and perfume. I think they're toxic for our skin.
@@ionelafessler5564 Perfumes are toxic with carcinagans . Perfumes aren't made from flowers any more. They are made with all different types of chemicals. Now there are so many people experiencing allergic reactions to the scents. I have a family member who is extremely allergic to perfume. She experiences rapid heart beat, raise in blood pressure, red face, metallic taste in her mouth, a horrific headache, exhaustion and a funny sensation in her nose. Once exposed to the perfume, she is sick for a couple of days. It's very serious for her.
*I was with you on the shoes until you said you've had them for four years.... you need new ones! Even though they may not look "worn out", they will lose support and can actually hurt your feet and posture if not traded after a fair amount of use.*
My husband and I packed 1 weeks worth of his clothes, 1 week of my clothes, all our toiletries, chargers, etc and his massive pair of work boots into a carry on for our last vacation. Family was shocked 😂
I have more than one cooking spoon and spatula. One reason for that is I have non-stick and regular cookware. I can’t use a metal spatula on a non-stick pan. It’s also nice to have more than one cooking spoon when I’m making more than one thing at a time. I do own only one can opener though. 🙂
I own multiple kitchen items of the same kind because I own a dishwasher and I only need to run it about twice a week. So if my spatula / egg turner goes into the dishwasher on day 1, then I am without it for days.
Thank you! I just had an ah ha moment. I live in California in fire country so I keep bags packed for emergency evacuation. I’m going to repack it into my beautiful Brighton luggage that rarely gets used. I’ll save space and save my luggage in an emergency. Love your tips!

one phone, one car, no tv, one indoor plant (definitely more outside!), one facial cleanser and one toner. Don't really use makeup, but DO have several different lipsticks, because I like to match with my outfits; however one that i use as much as all the rest put together: Mica by L'Oreal.
I have one perfume, but as a minimalist also and not wanting to spray average perfumes (which are not natural) on my skin, i make my own with oil and essential oils. Plus it means i can make my own fragrance, which i love.
We own one record player ( so one entertainment system I guess 🤷🏻♀️)most people have tvs or laptops or computers but we just have our cell phones and a record player. We have children's records from my nan so we put those on for our daughter . I have no interest in owning a TV or a laptop . People always ask us why haha we just don't need one that's all we don't think that stuff is bad it's just not something that interests us enough to own one
1 comb, no brush, no perfume, several running shoes lol, no watch, I so agree on face products. Less is more! No sweatpants but lots of leggings. Haven’t decluttered those yet 🤣🤣🤣 1 set of luggage but it all fits inside of each other for storage, 2 TVs, 1 of most makeup items, using up my extra eyeshadows this year, not buying any til these are gone! No sunglasses, 2 pairs of prescription glasses in case one breaks, we have 4 vehicles...crazy...all but one are old and one is a work truck for my hubby’s job that we paid for, all our cars are paid off, one of most kitchen stuff, I do have lots of dress clothes and lots of leisure clothes. I decluttered the closet more than once and still have a lot but I wear a lot of what I have left. Love this video! Thx!!
I actually only have one of a lot of things on this list as well 😊 and yes owning one makes you HAVE to keep track of it. I've had my one pair of prescription, quality sunglasses for +6 years now. 😎
For some reason I was thinking you lived in Canada - probably because the Roots thing - and I thought, oh it's easy to have one car when you live in a place with good transport... but I live in Charlotte and that's not as easy - but you live in Charlotte! Ha ha. Well, I also have kids and that makes it more difficult. But, when we lived in Europe with these kids we did have one car (well, we also had 0 cars). You are absolutely right, though, I only know one married couple with one car.
Most of the items u own one i also owned for long time, except running shoes b'coz i used to collect them long time ago,, but since last year, i haven't bought any new running shoes. I'll only buy a new one when one of them is worn out which is not anytime soon!
I have a left hand one and a right hand one for genral purpose and left and right small sharp and pointed scissors. Ooops and three scissors on different types of Swiss pocket knves and tools. Soon adds up ...
I have 6 pairs. Keep in different rooms - kitchen living room 2bedrooms and bathroom. I don't like walking to another room when I need scissors for a quick snip.
I had that issue...a pair in every room also nail clippers...WTH....its amazing how you completely forget you have one and 6 appear out of nowhere...BUT...its the awareness that counts and once we have that the journey begins 💜

Hey ash! Love the one pair of runners I will get rid of the ones I don’t use. One MacBook Pro is great but I already have a desktop and laptop and an iPad. I hope my iPad doesn’t breakdown as it has been super comfy when relaxing and super portable. I have written a whole book on it using a Bluetooth keyboard. My IBM PC is second nature to me and is more efficient vs a MacBook based on my skills so apple would be a big leap. One item I only own one of that many own lots hmmm let me think here..... a single bookcase of movies as I see most everyone that collects movies have multiple areas of storage. Edit::: I am getting rid of 2 pairs of runners and I am keeping 2 one for the gym and one for everyday.
If you run a lot, I would consider keeping two pairs just for that, as alternating every time you run is very beneficial, both to your knees and to your shoes (they will wear down a lot slower than if you wore the same ones every time)! just a tip!
I'm currently working through my multiples, I can't bring myself to throw out useful stuff that I will eventually use but it's tempting!y wardrobe is work on progress 😬
It's freeing to get rid of the burden of items. The thought that one would "eventually use" useful items causes us to hold on to ~everything~. We look at one item at a time and say we'll use it, but step back and see that we've said that to multiple multiple multiple items (x500 times) = not enough time in a year to use these items. (Unless you've got this impulse in control and it's a managable project list that you're actively doing). I've thrown out projects that I didn't do over 10 years! Moved 4 times with. &c. My mother is a generous gift giver of practical objects too, so at one point I had a 7 years worth supply of Fabric Softener. 7 YEARS! (and there are other objects I had to get rid of, albeit "useful", just to be able to claim my space back)
If you’re looking to declutter your life, make sure to subscribe! I have a series coming out soon on how to declutter your life starting from scratch! 🥰
I have just 1 laptop, it double as a desktop when I use it with my docking station. One hairbrush and comb. One Swatch Watch, The less I have, the less clutter there is.
Hi, good quality and interesting video - I have a genuine question which is not meant to sound hateful: What's your stance on sustainability and human rights? As you might be aware of, Apple have been repeatedly accused of child labour and human rights abuse and the amount of waste they produce is shocking. Similar issues with luxury brands such as Giorgio Armani. Do you buy these items second-hand? Edit: I am aware that minimalism and sustainability are different things, however in my opinion they should be closely related.
For most consumable products I usually have more than one. Some are only sold in two or four packs or one costs 90% of getting two. In some situations only having one is just a bad idea as it always runs out before you get to the shop to restock - soap bars, loo rolls. Even the washing up liquid which is not even an annual purchase runs out at the "wrong" time. I am not always keen on BOGOF (buy one get one free) deals particularly on fresh food. Do I eat the same meal for 8 days, buy only one so not half price or can I freeze it fresh or cooked?
Definitely makes sense to get more than one for certain things! I couldn’t imagine ever buying single rolls of toilet paper as a time! Hugely depends on how much you actually use an item and how much you’re saving
I wish the one item rule would work in my house. For stuff only I use, it can, but anything my husband can use, not so much. He is very talented at losing the one thing we have--including the brush! >.> I do only have one watch, because it is a beautiful and special gift from my MIL :) I only have 1 moisturizer and 1 cleanser. 1 suitcase for me as well. I only own 1 of a few makeup items like concealer, foundation, blush, and mascara because I finally found the brands that work for me. I need a few eyeshadow and lipstick options though. Only 1 pair of sunglasses and a clip on for my regular glasses. Mostly because I invest in nice UV protection ones. I only have one pair of dress pants as well.

But what I cannot even fathom that you only have 1 pair of is the roots sweatpants. I love them. My husband and son has lots of them too and we love using them especially during the winter season
I like that nordgreen watch. I might consider getting one, I just have to save up for it
Love this so much! And it may also be helpful to keep in mind that I live in North Carolina where the weather is significantly warmer. 😉💙
Kathy B.
Love all of these! The winter boots one is great!
I love this idea so much! I am binging alllll your videos because I have just started on my minimalism journey. one thing I only own one of is also a brush and comb! once mine has seen its end, I am going to purchase a bamboo brush :)
Love it!! Wishing you luck on your minimalism journey! 🥰
You definitely have the best minimalism channel so far, very easy to listen to and great advice!
Using conditionner for shaving makes the skin so smooth and hydrated
I own one vacuum cleaner. A regular old upright. No cordless vacuum, no robotic vacuum, no handheld...you get the idea 😉
That’s a great one!!
Would definitely love to put together something like that!
I used the t.v. I had in my childhood room until it stopped working last year. It was one with a back & a bubble screen. Lol.
I own 1 TV, laptop, comb, perfume, make up items, kitchen utensils, suitcase, running shoes, sunglasses, etc.
That’s awesome! 💙
Thanks so much for the recommendation!!
I love Sarah Therese! She has such great content and I think this video is such a good idea
For sure!! She’s super sweet and I love her minimalism videos 💙
Totally agree with you on skincare. Dr. Dray is the best Dermatologist to watch❤️
Great video ideas here... I believe I made a video on selling decluttered items on my channel last year if that helps!
@@AshlynneEaton awesome I will have to check that out! And please yes do them they'd be great videos for your channel!
I use to own multiple hair ties and loose them all the time. Now I just own one and treasure it. And it’s been 2 years and I haven’t lost it yet :)
U inspire me to be a minimalist ❤️ thank u for this Ashlynne!
💙💙💙
I learned my lesson with owning multiple makeup items. I’ve had some of them for well over their expiration dates and should probably throw half of my stuff away but I can’t stomach not getting my money’s worth so I’ve been on a makeup no buy to get thru all of what I have. Saves me so much money.
I'd love to see what you actually own multiples of! Is there anything which you've sometimes thought is not strictly "minimalist" to have more than one of but it add value for you?
Oh love this video idea!
Love your accent. I'm from Russia. Your videos are really enjoyable to listen and easy to understand. Thanks for doing it!
My husband and I packed 1 weeks worth of his clothes, 1 week of my clothes, all our toiletries, chargers, etc and his massive pair of work boots into a carry on for our last vacation. Family was shocked 😂
Own a Tardis?
Borrowed Mary Poppins' carpet bag.
That’s so awesome! Way to go to both of you 🥰
I own 2 rings and one bracelet from a non for profit coffee shop. I love it! I have always heard of these coffee shops and we have one here.👒
U inspire me.i just got a clear meaning of what is minimalist.
I have more than one cooking spoon and spatula. One reason for that is I have non-stick and regular cookware. I can’t use a metal spatula on a non-stick pan. It’s also nice to have more than one cooking spoon when I’m making more than one thing at a time. I do own only one can opener though. 🙂
I guess that one totally makes sense 🥰
I own multiple kitchen items of the same kind because I own a dishwasher and I only need to run it about twice a week. So if my spatula / egg turner goes into the dishwasher on day 1, then I am without it for days.
Is it just me or those aren’t that weird to just have one I think that’s normal
We are a family of 4 & have only 1 car. People think im crazy, but it does save on money.
Thank you! I just had an ah ha moment. I live in California in fire country so I keep bags packed for emergency evacuation. I’m going to repack it into my beautiful Brighton luggage that rarely gets used. I’ll save space and save my luggage in an emergency. Love your tips!
Ok, so I totally spotted the Roots Canada hat in another video of decluttering and thought "Oh WOW, no one knows about them (no one in my small circle at least lol)" and was going to comment but then jumped to this video and when I saw you hold up the Salt and Pepper sweatpants im like NO WAY! LOLOL I am a self-admitted super cluttered bug and my husband is the most minimalist person I have ever met... I am trying to get a bit better in small things everyday that help de-clutter all of the paper mess! I am a couponer and paper clutter is 80% of my struggle! Thanks for your videos!
one phone, one car, no tv, one indoor plant (definitely more outside!), one facial cleanser and one toner. Don't really use makeup, but DO have several different lipsticks, because I like to match with my outfits; however one that i use as much as all the rest put together: Mica by L'Oreal.
Nice list!!
I have one perfume, but as a minimalist also and not wanting to spray average perfumes (which are not natural) on my skin, i make my own with oil and essential oils. Plus it means i can make my own fragrance, which i love.
I’m similar in a lot of ways! Glad to see someone you else relates 😊
Thx!!
Love this list! Thanks so much for sharing 🥰
Calming video and great advice thank you so much for the great advice simple life is a happy life
I own 9 scissors oh my I had no idea
@@nikki4701 Same! I also stash 2 away so if my husband loses the rest, I am set. Haha. Plus you need different scissors for different things. Food, fabric, paper.
@@nikki4701 Yes I have a pair of scissors in my kitchen, a different color for my gift wrapping paper stash; another different color for my filing cabinet. I need to get rid of the excess too.
I own one moisturizer and one purse :)
Love that! One purse is a great one!
There's some really awesome advice in this video! Unfortunately due to socioeconomic circumstances I can't relate to some of the advice, but it's still good advice for the objects I do own.
Seriously, being poor makes me a minimalist... I own 1 or zero of those things😶🤭
I know lol, who owns more than a single television?? They're so expensive
I still need to find my uniformed wardrobe. I'm turning 30 soon so I want to dress a bit more adult-ish I guess. Definitely only own 1 perfume at a time.
Love your vids. Everything you say in your videos is said in such a positive and happy feeling way and I personally really love that about your videos and personality!✨
You’re so sweet! So glad you enjoyed them!
If you run a lot, I would consider keeping two pairs just for that, as alternating every time you run is very beneficial, both to your knees and to your shoes (they will wear down a lot slower than if you wore the same ones every time)! just a tip!
I only own one brush one pick.
This was a great vidio!
1 tv in the entire home is great! We have 1 tv and it helps us all compromise and spend time as a family. 😊
7 YEARS! (and there are other objects I had to get rid of, albeit "useful", just to be able to claim my space back)
You’re amazing. I don’t even know where I would start.
If you’re looking to declutter your life, make sure to subscribe! I have a series coming out soon on how to declutter your life starting from scratch! 🥰
In a small house one kitchen utensil make sense in a larger house having two can be helpful so two people can do the same job at the same time
I'm new to minimalism so I'm hoping to get rid of more items I don't use often 😊
That’s so great!
Your videos have inspired so much to get into minimalism. Well if not all, i would like to achieve most of it. Thanks alot for this motivation ❤❤
Nice video 🥰 as of me I only have one purse😘, I backpack ( diaper bag) and 1 small personal bag for small event😘
That’s so awesome!! 🥰
I own only one of all of those things. Did not know that made me a minimalist.
Surround yourself with people that lift you up. 👭
Jessica Peverell Nike has a bad ethical record too.
Cathy Bryant yeah, pretty much any big corporation should be avoided. They’re responsible for so much suffering in less privileged countries.
Hi I m from India. Great video, I love minimalist lifestyle at all. Like from India to your video.
love this ✨✨💞
For most consumable products I usually have more than one.
Roots.. yay...my fellow Canadian Love your videos xo
Respect the 1 car, really makes sense for you two. You truly save a lot of money if you only have to uber/lyft occasionally.
I only have one pair of dress pants as well.
not everyone is able to own only one comb, especially people with black hair omg
Congratulations on 50k 🤩🥳🥰😍♥️
THANK YOU SO MUCH!! 🥰🎉
The list
1: Brush and Comb
2: Laptop
3: Perfume
4: Shoes
5: Watch
6: Moisturizer
7: Sweatpants
8: Suitcase
9: Television
10: Makeup items
11: Car
12: Utensils
13: Dress Pants
I totally agree with the makeup thing. Having so much makeup, I found it expired before I actually enough of it to justify buying it.
For perfumes, I have a sample pack that just has a small amount of each scent! Helps prevent me from having to commit to a big bottle :)
That is the only perfume I own as well 💕
