I mean I own both, just received the Clarett a few days ago and it does not perform as well as the Scarlett with low buffers. You get crackling noise and drops earlier (using the same computer)

You have to put a lower buffer size, like 128 or 256, your problem with latency is not the interface is your buffer size :)

Use the Focusrite Control program to listen directly from the preamp instead from your computer. You won't have the latency.

  • @kibon8387
    @kibon8387 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

if you loop the recording back as far as i know it will create more latency on the recording, but not on the audio monitor/headphone. on scarlett 2i4 it has direct monitor function you can activate, it will lower the sound from the computer but you will get the input sound directly with no latency.

Audio Hijack would be better to record audio from an application compared to garageband. Garageband does not allow to set the buffer size in the core audio driver unlike other audio apps such as logic, reaper, or other DAW's. With the ability to lower the buffer size you decrese the latency even with USB audio interfaces that do not include direct monitoring digital mixer software. Garageband increases the latecy based on the system usage and CPU strain with out any input from the user. The clarett's thunderbolt spped is nice but even under a heavy CPU load latency will still be a problem. A small inexpensive mixer would solve this and there is a great srticle from sound on sound about how to monitor and record with 0 latency no matter what the computer buffers the i/o latecy to be I will link that at the end of my post. Great job on the comparison video!! www.soundonsound.com/sos/aug99/articles/zerolatency.htm Also the noise floor of the Shure SM7b is higher than either foucusrite preamps. The SM7b is a great dynamic microphone but I have always felt it's output was very low but sounds great on voices and musical instruments.

so what you're trying to do is to have post tape playback.. thats the thing with digital technology and also the reason why in professional studios they still use analog gear for the most parts.. you can't get latency away, however you can reduce it in your daw substantially by decreasing the buffer size.. with a good cpu you can reduce it far enough so you won't tell a difference as long as you don't overdo it with effects (which make the computer go slower) so its not a problem of the interface that you have.. the old one was just fine for your needs I would say.. just decrease the buffer size and you're good

Latency? I was using a Focusrite Saffire 6 USB 1.1 and had no latency. I have to believe his ASIO settings just need to be tweaked.

  • @oysteinsoreide4323

The noise floor of both interfaces will both be lower than ambient noise. So you can't have mikes connected to it to test the noise.

Man, at around 10:00 you are comparing noise levels. Since You put the notch at 1oclock on Scarlett and 12oclock on Clarett, the noise level might be lover on CLarett thanks to that. Could it be right?
    Cheers! thanks for the review!
PS I think you spent too much time talking about how they look - the audio interfaces are not at all about that, are they?

  • @oysteinsoreide4323

Both interfaces has more than acceptable noise floor. The clarett has better pre amp, so it will have a cleaner gain stage.

Well, in fact latency has very little to do with the type of link. It's all about how fast your device and your computer does AD/DA conversion. USB devises are very dependent on your computer's CPU power, yet still if you have a good computer you can get less than 5 milisec of latency on your Scarlett, which is more than enough to monitor your speach via playback. Just set the buffer size in your DAW as low as your CPU can work with.
2nd gen Scarlett can get you as little as 3 milisec of latency on a fancy computer.
Clarett is a peice of professional equipment for high quality sound recording. Switching from Scarlett to Clarett only for the sake of lower latency is a waste of money.

I actually thought the Clarett Pres sounded slightly better, clearer not so muddy which was I was more interesting in. To be honestly the latency in the Scarlett is already pretty good.
The big difference is quality on the pres and convesion via thunderbolt instead of USB. However the price different is quite a stretch, literally twice more expensive.

Apple changed the thunderbolt on the back of the computers to USB-C and Focusrite changed it on the interface to match them.

There's a few TH-cam videos that show this, so I didn't want to push the Focusrite preamps. That's why I got the Cloudlifter. With the CL, my knob is set to 8.5 so that the Clarett flashes green if that helps put things in perspective.
