Clarett sounds best to me! Such clear transients, even in comparison to the Apollo! The Twin certainly has its benefits, but in such a raw comparison you can really tell where the money went for the Clarett! Thanks for the awesome shootout!
I watched this a couple of days ago, and today I ordered a Clarett+ 8pre to take over for my Scarlett 2i2. (I also considered the UA apollo twin, but I really needed more channels) Thnx for your good content. :)
Hmmm, now you have me considering the Clarett over the Apollo. Might be best value for money without sacrificing much. Excellent the way you compare in short bursts, immediately after one another btw. Cheers.
Nah get the Apollo . I have a Clarett I record mostly vocals so Having the Unison Pre Amps in the Apollo is huge . That should make your choice right there . For guitar, Drums whatever.....
An interface (if selected in Sound settings (which usually is by default when you plug them in)) will bypass your Mac’s controls leaving you to control the volume on the interface. If using iTunes, you can of course also control the volume using the slider.
Wow, with headphones on, if I closed my eyes and played randomly each one of those takes, I'm pretty sure that I would not be able to tell you which preamp recorded which take. I'm glad I saved my money and got the scarlett. I can always go line in with my gap pre or solo 610.
3:13 couldn't get enough output on the monitoring. Interesting can anyone speak to this? I like to monitor with effects anyways, not dry. Is this just a dry monitor? At any rate this convinced me to get the Scarlett. Thanks for the video.
I'm getting desperate since no forum seems to know so I'll ask here: in 2018 I bought a Dell 7573 2-in-1, and last week I bought a focusrite clarett+ 4pre. It keeps disconnecting. I am NOT having an issue with my computer not seeing the device connected; quite the opposite: it always shows it's connected, just sometimes no audio comes out. And not just when I'm using my daw. All of my computer audio is routed through it, and all of it goes away intermittently and without warning i.e. it isn't a specific sound or level, or number of inputs plugged into the clarett. It disconnects at any volume, with zero inputs or 4 inputs. The only way to get it back on is to manually flip the focusrite power switch off and on, OR going into my studio set up in my daw, deselecting my focusrite ASIO, and then selecting it again. Has anyone found a fix? I'm running windows 11 22h2 using Cubase BTW. I've tried: -Cubase 9.5LE and Cubase 13 pro -2 different claretts and one scarlet -4 different USB cables -plugging into a different USB port (I have 3 A and 1 C, all are USB 3.0. No, I don't have a USB 2.0 port) -cleaning USB ports and cable ends with a cotton swab and alcohol solution -reinstalling focusrite drivers multiple times -making sure all software is up to date -freeing up memory space -making sure the power cable in my interface is plugged in correctly -increasing buffer size -prayer -witchcraft It always just disconnects randomly.
Terrific vid. I kept my eyes closed as to not have my mind play tricks. Clearly the Clarett is superior. Like 2 dimensions verses 3. Both the guitar and vox were much more present and alive. Worth the extra dough.
@@gastonsantos258 If you are a diehard Apple user, get the thunderbolt version. If not USB will probably suit you fine. I have not had any experience using thunderbolt hardware on windows machines and would therefore be wary. Thunderbolt is still faster than USB. Less latency.
Great comparison! Thank you so much for this! To me, clearly Clarett is the winner. I record my son's violin audition/competition tape with Clarett w/ Air and am very happy with it, but thinking of recommending other violinists to use Scarlett for the cheaper price, but now, I'd better recommend Clarett.
Question is, how much of the Apollo goes into preamps, how much goes into the DSPs and the extra connectivity. It is not unlikely that the Clarett has quite similar or even better preamps and DA/AD.
Comparison of the Clarett and Scarled does not mention what microphones were used. I have found Clarett+ not working well with dynamic mic (not enough power) when recording classical guitar. It is fine with loud sources though.
Hi!! I have got a phone Nokia G42 , and Im looking for an audio interface to use it as player only (ideally with jacks outputs) do anybody knows if the focusrite can work?
Hi Ed! I’m having a problem. I’m on my second Clarett and i can’t seem to get any usable signal out of the pres. I have to crank the gain all the way up in order to get the meters in my daw moving and of course that introduces noise. I’m at a loss, man.
Hi George. Are you using a dynamic mic such as the SM7b? The Clarett is limited to 57dB input gain which isn’t much for a mic like that. It should be plenty for a condenser though so maybe there’s a fault with the device. Also, consider proximity (especially if using a dynamic).
I can directly plug in both electric and acoustic electric guitars with no DI's used. Am I right? I mean that the device accepts unbalanced high impedance signals and convert them to balanced. Am I right?
I think it would be much easier to decide if you could have the exact same recording for all the devices. Using a splitter perhaps? It's hard to tell as they are different takes.
The first time I thought the Clarett sounded better than (the much to much hyped and expensive) Apollo Twin was in an over $250,000 recording studio! Now I'm sure Clarett it does indeed sound better. Strange how nobody on TH-cam "dares" to properly make a comparison between the two! So , the better functionality and superb Apollo Twin's software aside , The Clarett sounds actually better (and more open) , and it's a no brainer as to witch device you should buy , especially if you already have some brilliant high end software like FabFilter and/or iZotope for example!!!
Thats because the apollo is the iphone of interface world. All these youtubers use it cause is shiny looks. Clarett is an android that can compete for half the price, yet the apple fanboys will refuse to believe it and live in denial
I get confused at the "16, 24bit" etc and 48, 44.1 Khz thing, in my DAW (Cakewalk) I have it set to 44.1 (I can't remember why now...?) and I use a Scarlett 2i2 (2nd gen), (is that set at 16bit 44.1?) I sometimes use my Zoom Q2N-4K, which allows up to "24 bit 96Khz".... but I use it at 16 bit 44.1, maybe I read somewhere you should set everything the same....feel like I'm missing out, damn this is confusing :((
@@EdThorne I also have no idea what bit or Khz my Scarlett 2i2 2nd gen records at... is everything supposed to be set the same? Interface, DAW etc? I'm thinking of upgrading now......Claretts are a bit out of range, sadly..
Listening on cheapy consumer headphones: On guitar, Scarlett sounds rather low/low-mid heavy, Clarett a bit flatter with more detail in the pick noise. AIR gets the Scarlett at least halfway to the Clarett on both those counts, whereas the AIR on Clarett is not as striking a change, maybe because it has less work to do. On vocals, the difference between Scarlett and Clarett seemed considerably less apparent.
@@EdThorne I think on the guitar it is the transients that pop out much more on the Clarett. Also Air mode on the Scarlett sounds more like a simple EQ would compared to the Clarett and it is my impression that Air mode on the Scarlett reduces the low end while it's notthe case on the Clarett. Now this could be due to the fact that you matched the clips by loudness, but if you did that's right thing to do and didn't happen with the Clarett. If I had to guess I'd say that it is the antialiasing filter on the ADC input that's causing most of the difference in quality, it is still expensive to make a good one after all. Not putting the Scarlett down anyway, it's fine at that price point.
I was hoping the Clarette would sound noticeably better but I didnt hear it. I did notice the apollo sounded...I dont know how to say it, maybe not as harsh yet more detailed?
Why not do a full comparison between the Clarett and the Apollo? It seems everyone is comparing the Scarlett with the Apollo twin and it's pretty obvious that the one that costs about $700 more is gonna have better features. The Clarett, while more expensive than the Scarlett, is still significantly cheaper than the Apollo and may just be a better value for money
The Scarlett and Clarett are virtually identical in terms of features. The primary differences being the converters and preamps. The only comparison difference would be the audio quality, which I have demonstrated against the Apollo and Scarlett in this video (if you watched until the end) 🙂
@@EdThorne What does 10 in 4 out mean, concerning these interfaces? I think I’ve been given bogus information. Really well done comparison. I’m trying to decide on the Clarett 2Pre, mainly for the headroom, like you mention.
@@CorbCorbin It means ten inputs (2 x XLR/jack inputs on the front + 8 ADAT inputs), and four line outputs for monitors or hardware (some companies include the stereo headphone output in this output number, but not Focusrite). 👌
That's what I need . I have a Clarrett and thinking about getting an Apollo. I think the unison tech in the Apollo is the real difference . SO I'M GETTING IT!
To replace my Scarlett solo, initially I purchased SSL2 and it was sounding very clear and transparent...but .a few weeks ago I purchased Clarett 2pre USB for a good discounted price. My first choice of choosing SSL2 was that I want to use sm57 (which btw Clarett is not good)...But the Clarett absolutely blew my mind.....Especially when u directly plugin your electric or bass guitars, its sounds way better and richer than the SSL2. With DI box it sounds even better....Don't know why they don't review this aspect of Clarett.
@@bixo2956 headphone preamps also very good compared to SSL2. I feel the Clarett has better AD/DA Converters compared to SSL2 and so u can hear a more detailed audio when connected with Clarett.
Is there something that beats the clarett in general? In terms of quality and price point? I've a need for this to use with my sE VR2 mic for recording audio and to use with my amp when performing.
Great comparison. It would be interesting to hear what other people think about the difference between the Clarett and the Apollo. I thought the Clarett sounded better, which is surprising to me considering how expensive the Apollo is. I have a Focusrite 1st Gen Scarlett and after hearing this comparison I'm definitely thinking about investing in a Clarett. I'll need the 8 input version though!
I think the Clarett sounds slightly better too on the face of it. The value in the Apollo is in the Unison Preamps, UAD plugins, near zero latency whilst monitoring with the plugins, the ability to print these monitoring effects as you record, and it’s desktop controller functionality. There’s more info about the Apollo features in this video reviewing the new Apollo Solo: th-cam.com/video/lYDFQP3kBcE/w-d-xo.html
My mind is made up. I'm going Clarett from a FireStudio Project by Presonus. I used it for many years, but my recent PC rebuild did not allow for my FW card to be installed. Currently, I'm using my 1 gen Scarlett 2i2. The converters on that are stunning and the stereo field seems more defined. Clarett 8, here I come....
I'm torn between focusrite clarett+2 pre and universal audio volt vs apollo solo usb. I will only record guitar and vocal solos and do the mix mastering In the meantime, I want to sing it in live music without delay. Do these products have built-in reverb effect? Also focusrite sony x90k with digital optical output. I have a television. It has a digital optical output. Can I connect it? My speaker is KRK CLASSIC 5. My speaker inputs are TRS, XLR and RCA. Which sound card do you think would be better for me for wide use?
Can I use the clarett for a better sound in movies, music and gaming for pc ? I’m looking for a good interface that will be far better then the onboard sound chip of a good mainboard to be able to have insane sound in movies (surround sound), epic quality in hearing music and playing games
1 Neutrxn Music No. The only other interfaces I know of that enable real time monitor processing are the Steinberg UR22c if running on an iPadPro, and the Antelope interfaces ($$$). Maybe someone else can add to this list or correct me if I’m wrong?
Somulo Ah, you’ve made my day, thank you. I re-branded the channel in mid January with 103 subs. It’s grown nicely in 8 months but feel free to share the word 🙂 🙏
From a mastering rig monitoring the scarett have more bass and is more neutral-musical, Clarett is bright with less bass so sending mixes to that preamps could sound harsh or bright.
This is VERY true!! Ive mastered songs in Analog by running a signal from my main workstation(Scarlett 1st gen) , through an Analog compressor, and then to the Scarlett(2i2 1st gen) preamps for years. The sound I got from the Scarlett preamps in a mastering situation (with no processing) is shockingly good to say the least. Musical with a decent bottom end. I wasn't expecting those results when I first started mastering with it. This discovery is slept on with the Scarlett. I've recently done some updates to my interfaces, but my 2nd workstation still uses the 2i2, which is now a 2nd gen Scarlett.
I think the Apollo just pips the Clarett (with Air off)...it's flatter across the frequency spectrum which makes it much better to work with on pretty much everything in the long run.
I just purchased Focusrite Solo 3rd Gen and when I GO LIVE on FB (or just record in Quicktime) the sound only comes out the left side. I understand that this happens because the Focusrite Solo considers input 1 (XLR) to be the left channel and input 2 (1/4 inch) to be the right channel. Now this would be an easy fix in post with any DAW because I can process the final output in Mono however because I GO LIVE and I dont have the option to fix in post (because it is LIVE) How can I get the live audio on the left and right side of the recording when recording live?
Hi there. I don't have my Scarlett with me to test this but check the routing options in the Focusrite Control App. Also, if you're not already, try using OBS (screencasting/streaming software), which allows you to mono input tracks.
I got an 18i20 about 4 years ago off of amazon. I actually wanted a clarett when I bought the 18i20 but man is the clarett expensive. Sounds like it's worth the money though. I got the 18i20 to see if it was a good interface for me, coming from a beringer UMC22 (awesome starter interface), but quickly realized I'm gonna need more audio inputs than just the one for a mic. IDK how long interfaces are expected to last, but my next one might be a clarett 8 pre. Another reason I got the 18i20 is because there's just less red on it. I had a 2nd gen 18i20 that I ended up giving away because it was glitched out. Got it off ebay they didn't list the issue.
They’re we’re all recorded with the same set up, same distance from the mic and I’ve gain matched them as close as possible. Any difference is a performance differential. The Apollo has some low mids yeh.
You can hear for yourself here 🙂 To be honest, the Scarlett is not really an upgrade. The Clarett would be an upgrade sonically and in terms of converters. th-cam.com/video/ZcXOoXdQ9Z8/w-d-xo.html
@@EdThorne thank you for responding :). and tbh ur right I didn’t perceive much of a difference when I heard it. Is there a $100 range one that would be an upgrade from the UMC 404HD?
It was pretty clear that Apollo was the worst. For me the Scarlett sounds more balanced but it might be because it's sound was in the middle of these 3 interfaces. The Clarett sure has "more air" but I'm not sure if that's actual real sound difference or just different processing/eq in the analog section (the difference was too big to be explained by AD alone). I was surprised to find so much difference between the Scarlett and Clarett.
Apollo is the most precise and neutral (listen to the voice recording - very even mids). Clarett has some emphasis on the top end which might be pleasing on sources like acoustic guitar, and might be perceived as additional clarity... Scarlett is more on the smooth side / not that 'fast' - could be pleasing in particular on harsh sources. Scarlett with 'Air' sounds almost like Clarett w/o 'Air'. Clarett with 'Air' is clearly over the top for my taste...
Honestly, I think the Apollo accents the low mids a lot more and sounds duller in the top end as well. However, it does sound warmer and more "analog' than the other two. I guess it comes down to individual taste but to me, the Clarett sounds better overall.
I’ve never used an RME and really love the UAD universe so I’d go for a Twin X Quad if you can stretch to it. Quad version for by he extra DSP. Or even the X4.
For anyone with ears, the clarett did infact, sound far better than the Apollo. Even the Scarlett sounded better than the damn Apollo. The twin sounded muffled and WEAK.
These both have the same Direct Monitoring feature for zero latency where you can mix a direct return of your dry input audio with your Daw input. Most brands now host some sort of direct monitoring and if I’m honest, it works better on most other brands because it helps to have loud headphone outputs. The headphone outputs on these units are quite low volume (even with my 25Ohm AA Hi-X55 headphones or 64Ohm Sennheiser’s HD300Pros)
I thought the clarett preamp sound worked better than scarlett for the acoustic guitar. But the vocal I thought the Scarlett had a better tone. Guess they just have different colors, one is better than another for what youre trying to record.
In my opinion, the Claratt with an air on sound full, clean/clear than the Apollo, but without air on they are hard too tell the difference. I was thinking about buying Apollo or Clara and now I got my twin x quad, but having a few issue with popping and crackling sounds while listening to music or TH-cam will have to disable the c-state in BIO for windows. But when recording, I still got popping sound without using any plugins from the uad console but just 3-5 other 3rd party plugins like bx, waves with 1-5 latency. Was thinking about return and get the claratt instead.
I would agree with your assessment on the sound there. I’ve not heard of this problem before with an Apollo but I have heard a lot of complaints about it with Windows unfortunately. Have you checked if the Sample rate you’re recording at through the Apollo (you can find this in settings in Console) matches the sample rate you’re recording at in your DAW? If there’s a sample rate discrepancy, that may cause popping as the processsors struggle to keep up with the conversion.
Dell XPS 15 model 9570: 4K, 1TB, 32GB RAM, Intel 7 8Gen., GPU 1050 Ti Max-Q. I just the replacement from sweetwater yesterday and still having the same popping and crackling sound. Buffer size 256. I got my Scarlett solo and run through same plugins and setting except using different audio interface. I got have problem from the solo but popping on the Apollo
Dear Thorne once you pierce you don't come out. You give mind blowing review. I have become your fan. Your English is very simple and could be easily understood.
JaMerv I know the Origin, great mic. The iD14 and Clarett are very close. Personally I’d go for the Clarett but the Audient has the assignable iD button making it a slightly more flexible desktop controller.
@@EdThorne I feel you man👈🏽thanks so much for they info I really needed it. I'm off to buy this bad boy real soon. Thank you And keep the great work, it's very helpful to artist like me🙌🙏. You've made a subscriber outta me🗣
@@EdThorne ok I got just one more for ya if you will lol🙌🙏: universal audio arrow or the clarett🤔👀as far as getting the best sound recording from your Mic and I guess other things but mainly the recording
I'm just wanting to make a major upgrade from my focusrite solo I've been using it for a while so I'm ready for something new fresh and powerful for my aston origin Mic so I'm getting some opinions from TH-camrs who know music
There is no major difference, i always look at the end goal, mixing can put both signals on the same level. I like these reviews because it gives me a good reason not to blow excessive money.
If there is a difference, TH-cam's audio compression killed it dead. I would recommend getting an oscilloscope that can show frequency vs time plots for comparison. All that said, I think the Scarelett line is intended more for the consumer market while the Clarett line is more professional.
@@EdThorne I'm not saying don't go with the best. More information is more (information theory). When I was a teen, I could hear well into 22kHz no problem. Age has killed that for me. Obviously other golden ears exist. And all the gear you are reviewing in this video is clearly consumer grade. In the 1960s, the best studios probably couldn't hit it. So, yeah, these reviews are still useful. There are going to be many people who want the absolute best audio (theater, live, whatever).
GREH. Disappointingly the Clarett only has 56dB of input gain but it is a clean preamp signal early all the way to the top. If you’re a loud singer you’ll be fine. The Audient iD14, SSL and Apollo all have enough input gain to negate the need for cloudlifter.
@@EdThorne Thanks! Very helpful review. I have the old Focusrite Forte which actually has 75db of gain but I somehow blew the power and phantom power doesn't work, even though I can still run the sm7b. But the Focusrite team is offering me a trade in plus $100 to get the Clarett. Thinking may i'd get it purely because I know with the power blown, it won't sell for much anyways.
Hello good I hope you are well, I have a question if you have knowledge of the technology of studio one shaper, the technology is mix enginer fx but those of brainworx have a technology called TMT, my question is if they are similar processes? I hope you can guide me. Thank you!
Audient is 55db + an additional digital boost 10dB boost pad. So the audient is in the same league as the Focusrite. It just has a DSP boost which is the same as adding gain in post.
The video is great, between the Clarett 2 pre and the motu m2, which do you think would be more worthwhile? I record voes of rap, reggaeton, pop, salsa and sometimes acoustic guitars
I still haven’t been able to get hold of an M2 so I can’t comment on its quality. Having used Motu pres before I’d hazard a guess the M2 sounds great. I suspect the converters on the Clarett will be slightly better. Then it may depend whether you want/need ADAT or MIDI expandability. If you can, buy both and send one back after you’ve used them both 🤘
Good question. Personally, I think the Clarett has slightly better sounding preamps but the SSL has a much higher input gain (both have clean input gains), a much better headphone amp and therefore better/easier direct monitoring. Also, I’ve heard great things about the SSL plugins. The Clarett has ADAT if you want to expand your number of inputs later though.
The Scarlett has a mono/stereo=L+R input select button. On the Clarett you mix the direct monitoring in the Focusrite Control App. I believe (although I’m sorry I can’t quite remember for certain) the Clarett has a similar mono/stereo setting for direct monitoring.
@@EdThorne Nice. That is so crucial for me. I did switch to the strymon iridium with the other big strymons after that. everything stereo entirely, much effects. I always do play over studio monitors even when practicing and i am hella annoyed with my 2i2 2.gen only featuring mono direct monitoring. I dont want to boot up cubase always for practice. So i will switch to a new IF, the scarlett 3.gen does do it but i think, if upgrading, then i might as well upgrade the sound. So if it can do stereo DM i am very fine with it 👍👌
@@marcusstrymon693 The Direct Monitoring on the Scarlett (and I think Clarett) assumes input 1 is Left and 2 is Roght. So the ‘stereo’ image you hear is actually really mono send of inputs 1&2 acting as L&R. The ‘mono’ function is a mono sum of the inputs (either one or both together). It’s a very basic DM system, reflected by the prices of the units I feel. If you want proper monitoring in real time with FX processing capabilities and FX recording capabilities you need an Apollo, Antelope or Carbon (amongst others)
@@ilgnerserpa1948 Potentially. The Clarett pres are very clean so if you want some classic analog preamp saturation, at external pre my help you get that. Having an external pre at least gives you the option 🙂
I got the 4pre Clarett and it's awesome. HUGE step up over the Presonus USB that I upgraded from. For the plugins, I LOVE the sound of the Red 2 and Red 3 - just beautiful sounds. The console from bx is a Meh from me. It's great for free, but for my money, and my music, having everything built into one strip isn't great. YMMV.
@@EdThorne price plays a big part in it. The presents was 150$ I'm sure it is comparable to other 150$ audio interfaces. I was not prepared for the difference between that and the focusing, tho
hi please help me, i need to buy interface with ADAT, which is better Id14 MK2 or Clarett 2 Pre? (Sorry about my English, I'm Mexican) your videos are great.
The Scarlett is great value for money. I like how the Clarett sounds but the functionality of the Apollo as a desktop controller, the Unison preamp feature and the plugin monitoring stands it above both of them. Are you deciding between the three?
@@EdThorne thank you for your quick response! Actually I'm deciding between more than those three.. I plan to get an interface with more mic preamps because I'll probably need them in the future. Great video, what do you think about the Clarett vrs Audient ID14? I am between that two becouse a lot of people recommended the Audient and is cheaper but hearing the Clarett so close to the sound of the Apollo im confuse now.
Personally, I would go for a Clarett, I think it sounds great, however the Audient has the assignable iD button which could be useful as a desk top control feature.
I have no idea of what to do hahaha Which one would you recommend if I am an opera singer and do extremely high and extremely deep notes? I want it to sound as similar to how it sounds live as possible. All of them sounded almost the same to me xd

Hi Ed. Thank you very much for your clarification. I subscribed your channel. I am playing nayflute instrument. I have presonus studio one software in my laptop. While I am blowing nayflute, i record with backup music track in presonus studio. If I supply focusrite Scarlett for better audio quality, could it be useful to connect a vocal processor like Roland vt4 to Scarlett audio interface?
Thank you very much for your help! Amazon is not available in my country, so do you accept donations? What do you think is the best for recording vocals between the clarett and the apollo? I don't have good audio so I can't hear the difference. Feel free to suggest other models. Thanks again.
Hi there. You’re very kind but there’s no need for a donation, thank you for the thought though. In terms of sound, they’re very comparable but in terms of usability, the Apollo has some great features that make recording so much more enjoyable and efficient.
I am really surprised, that Clarett for me sound much better than apollo, apollo sounds like it has a lot of muddy frequencies, when clarett has got everything clean as much as possible. I`ve got at the moment scarlett in my home studio; apollo always was my dream, and I am thinking now about buying clarett in feature 😲😲
Brands makes cheaper hardware sounds "better" than expensive hardware to sell more, but is not better only more "clear", and is because the high frequencies are boosted up a bit, if you record a single voice is not bad, but when you record a whole song with the same interface and all your instruments sound like that you have a problem in the high frequencies, it makes you spend a lot of time fixing it, pro interfaces don't sound better, they sound right and are designed to get a better sound with many takes and channels, when you compare two or more preamps or interfaces, you need put attention in a few things, thickness of the sound, "sharpness" they need to be neutral to get a better result, dynamic range, max spl etc. Sorry if my English aint super good, is my third language. Peace
@@ferospro Also there is no way we know that guitar was recorded at the same angle, with the same attack, with the same distance from the soundhole to the mic - because just a bit of change in those parameters would somewhat change the final sound. But your take on the cheaper vs more expensive interface is very very good!
wow the Clarett was the best on the acoustic guitar imo, but couldnt really hear much of a difference on the vocals, probably the Clarett and Apollo are fuller sounding, in the low mids dunno
There's obviously more to it than just an audio interface, like a good microphone for example, which will make a bigger difference, as well what are you recording ? Will you need more than 24bit/48kHz ? probably not !!! you'll obviously be using equalizers, compressors and saturation during your mix and that will have significant effect on how your sound turns out and with a good microphone, the scarlett at 24bit/48kHz is all you'll need for an acoustic recording. As well the focusrite audio interfaces are well built and they should last you a while.
Hi Ylezon, For 250ohm headphones, in that price range I'd suggest an interface with a powerful headphone amp such as the new Audient iD14 mrkii, or the UAD Apollo Solo.
@@EdThorne I bought the dt 1770 250 Ohm from Beyerdynamic and have the EV RE320 microphone and am looking for a USB audio interface for the microphone and the headphones my budget is max 1200 euros more than the microphone and the headphones are not connected, However, I want to get the most out of the microphone and headphones. My area of application is exclusively listening to music, watching videos or films and talking to my friends with Discord and i play video games, of course I would be very grateful for any help.
Nice one Ed! I prefer the apollo ;-) Clarett is the winner for sure between the 2 focusrites in your examples. Scarlett is almost obnoxious in sound hehe. I used to have a scarlett 2i2 v1 and I noticed on that one a huge difference between the headphone out and the stereo outs on the back, Th ehadphone sounded considerably smaller. Hot that with these new interfaces?
White Noise Studio Thanks Marlon. On the guitar I prefer the Clarett. Undecided on the vocals but I own the Apollo so staying with it. The Clarett went back to the shop. The Scarlett HP is not very good imo. The Clarett is noticeably better.
@@EdThorne yeah Apollo sound most natural and usable to get great results from. I expect the audio from the other two will be a bit more work to mix properly.
I watch a difference between Scarlett and Apollo, and I was impressed with the Scarlett. Now, the UAD plug-ins are great, not sure of the AD/DA though. Cheers!

Clarett sounds best to me! Such clear transients, even in comparison to the Apollo! The Twin certainly has its benefits, but in such a raw comparison you can really tell where the money went for the Clarett! Thanks for the awesome shootout!
Yeh, the Clarett has very good preamps and converters. It's just a disappointing device in all other aspects in my opinion.
@@EdThorne Then what interface would you recommend?
@@androidgameplays4every13 the clarett+ is awesome not sure what is talking about
@@EdThorne in what ways? What else is there with an interface other than preamps and conversion?
@@NBodi flat interfaces don't have color. If you aren't aiming to have a flat interface you're building a piece of junk.
I watched this a couple of days ago, and today I ordered a Clarett+ 8pre to take over for my Scarlett 2i2.
(I also considered the UA apollo twin, but I really needed more channels)
Thnx for your good content. :)
Hmmm, now you have me considering the Clarett over the Apollo. Might be best value for money without sacrificing much. Excellent the way you compare in short bursts, immediately after one another btw. Cheers.
Thanks. I’m glad the video was helpful 🙂
Nah get the Apollo . I have a Clarett I record mostly vocals so Having the Unison Pre Amps in the Apollo is huge . That should make your choice right there . For guitar, Drums whatever.....
This was very helpful! :) we went end ordered the Clarett! Arrived tomorrow eek!!
I’m glad it was helpful. Enjoy your new interface 🙂
Can you use Mac volume controls to change the output volume (eg the volume of a song playing on the computer)?
An interface (if selected in Sound settings (which usually is by default when you plug them in)) will bypass your Mac’s controls leaving you to control the volume on the interface. If using iTunes, you can of course also control the volume using the slider.
Thank you for helping to make a decision, I think I am going to buy Clarett for my home studio!
That’s great, and you’re welcome, thanks for watching 🙂🙏
Wow, with headphones on, if I closed my eyes and played randomly each one of those takes, I'm pretty sure that I would not be able to tell you which preamp recorded which take. I'm glad I saved my money and got the scarlett. I can always go line in with my gap pre or solo 610.
@Fatz Treeboy Sounds great to me and I'm coming from a presonus studio live 24.4.2. I like this recording better than any I made on that
Maybe you should invest in better headphones!!
There isn't much of a difference. Anyone saying there is is just trying to justify paying double. 😂
@@1manrcvids286 what headphones are you using please?
I've tried:
-Cubase 9.5LE and Cubase 13 pro
-2 different claretts and one scarlet
-4 different USB cables
-plugging into a different USB port (I have 3 A and 1 C, all are USB 3.0. No, I don't have a USB 2.0 port)
-cleaning USB ports and cable ends with a cotton swab and alcohol solution
-reinstalling focusrite drivers multiple times
-making sure all software is up to date
-freeing up memory space
-making sure the power cable in my interface is plugged in correctly
-increasing buffer size
-prayer
-witchcraft
It always just disconnects randomly.
Terrific vid. I kept my eyes closed as to not have my mind play tricks. Clearly the Clarett is superior. Like 2 dimensions verses 3. Both the guitar and vox were much more present and alive. Worth the extra dough.
To me Focusrite Clarett rules, even if I have 2i2 :) Amazing review Ed!
Thanks Alexei 🙏
Sounds ways better than the Apollo and the 212
Surprising how much difference there is between the two. Clarett definitely has the edge for me.
Remco de Vries I was pleasantly surprised how good it sounds, especially on the guitar. It’s juicy 🙂
If you own a Mac, get the now discontinued Thunderbolt Clarett 2-Pre. You’ll be glad you did. USB 3.0 is nice but...
@@MultiPetercool but what man? i need to know before i purchase clarett usb this weekend
Awesome video. I loved the Clarett, sounds more detailed than the Scarlett. The Air mode is great in both interfaces.
javier eu Thanks. I was very pleasantly surprised with the Clarett, especially on the guitar, it sounds lovely.
Am I right?
Yes, these both have Hi-Z inputs.
@@EdThorne Thanx!
I think it would be much easier to decide if you could have the exact same recording for all the devices. Using a splitter perhaps? It's hard to tell as they are different takes.
Probably, you’re right, but the gains are matched and they are virtually identical performances.
@@EdThorne yea I know but still..
Would also like hearing a direct input with a bass or electric guitar too.
Exactly what I was looking for thank u
You’re welcome, I’m glad it helped.
Impressed by Clarett! Didn't expect such audible difference.
It’s a lovely sounding preamp.
Yeh I was surprised how good the Clarett sounds next to the Apollo. It’s juicy sounding, especially on the acoustic guitar.
Thats because the apollo is the iphone of interface world. All these youtubers use it cause is shiny looks. Clarett is an android that can compete for half the price, yet the apple fanboys will refuse to believe it and live in denial
Good Review, Thanks
I get confused at the "16, 24bit" etc and 48, 44.1 Khz thing, in my DAW (Cakewalk) I have it set to 44.1 (I can't remember why now...?) and I use a Scarlett 2i2 (2nd gen), (is that set at 16bit 44.1?) I sometimes use my Zoom Q2N-4K, which allows up to "24 bit 96Khz".... but I use it at 16 bit 44.1, maybe I read somewhere you should set everything the same....feel like I'm missing out, damn this is confusing :((
Aim for 24bit/48kHz. Here’s a video explaining everything: th-cam.com/video/O3xD_5bwzaE/w-d-xo.html
@@EdThorne Wow thank you man! So basically the "24bit 96Khz" audio setting on my Zoom camera is useless marketing BS!
@@EdThorne Now I remember!! It was because of CD Baby only allowing 16bit 44.1Khz to upload!!
@@TheOnlineBusker Yes, this is true. And strange how they’re behind everyone else on updating this format.
These were exactly my thoughts too. Good analysis. 👌
@@EdThorne Great that you had that comparison. Thanks a lot!

What does 10 in 4 out mean, concerning these interfaces?
With DI box it sounds even better....Don't know why they don't review this aspect of Clarett.
what about hedphone pres?

That’s great, enjoy 🙂

From a mastering rig monitoring the scarett have more bass and is more neutral-musical, Clarett is bright with less bass so sending mixes to that preamps could sound harsh or bright.
Interesting feedback, thanks for the info 🙂
Many thanks for this excellent vid. Genuinely useful. I love my Scarlett but the Clarett definitely has the edge.
Can the Clarett record using 32 bit float?
It seems vocal on clarett was recorded far than apollo.. isn't it? or appolo have some more low freq?
They’re we’re all recorded with the same set up, same distance from the mic and I’ve gain matched them as close as possible. Any difference is a performance differential. The Apollo has some low mids yeh.
@@EdThorne thanks
would the one that’s closer to $160 be a significant upgrade from the behringer 404HD?
Is the RME Babyface Pro, in your opinion, worth the extra money. I am down to this and the RME. Any advice would be appreciated, thanks
I've never used an RME, and they don't seem to want to send me one, but I hear great things, and their monitor app looks very good!
@@EdThorne Well they should - would love to see a comparison between it and the Clarett. Thanks for the reply.
I think this is an accurate assessment 👌🙏
Honestly, I think the Apollo accents the low mids a lot more and sounds duller in the top end as well. However, it does sound warmer and more "analog' than the other two. I guess it comes down to individual taste but to me, the Clarett sounds better overall.
Universal Audio Apollo Twin MKII or RME Fireface UCX what do you choose for yourself?
I’ve never used an RME and really love the UAD universe so I’d go for a Twin X Quad if you can stretch to it. Quad version for by he extra DSP. Or even the X4.
I will never unhear this. Clarett makes the Scarlett sound like a toy and even blows away the Apollo.
Only because you bought clarett & you don’t want to feel screwed for paying 500$+ 🤣🤣🤣
lmfao, I just sold my scarlett 2i2 today to get the clarett 2pre
For anyone with ears, the clarett did infact, sound far better than the Apollo. Even the Scarlett sounded better than the damn Apollo. The twin sounded muffled and WEAK.
@iobeid87 found the apollo fanboy whos punching the air for blowing $1k+
What abou the latency of those 2 interfaces when you are recording?
These both have the same Direct Monitoring feature for zero latency where you can mix a direct return of your dry input audio with your Daw input. Most brands now host some sort of direct monitoring and if I’m honest, it works better on most other brands because it helps to have loud headphone outputs. The headphone outputs on these units are quite low volume (even with my 25Ohm AA Hi-X55 headphones or 64Ohm Sennheiser’s HD300Pros)
very good review!
Thanks, John 🙂🙏
Id 14 or Clarett for voice over? Which Preamp is better?
Clarett.
Finally return my Apollo and will get Clarett 2pre.

For home studios musicians making music on TH-cam, Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 is all that you need.
No to get to that next level you need better converters. I had the 2i2 and now own the clarett+ . Night and freaking day comparison

There is no major difference, i always look at the end goal, mixing can put both signals on the same level. I like these reviews because it gives me a good reason not to blow excessive money.
Focusrite just updated the scarlett to generation 4, it will probably sound even better now with better features.
If there is a difference, TH-cam's audio compression killed it dead. I would recommend getting an oscilloscope that can show frequency vs time plots for comparison. All that said, I think the Scarelett line is intended more for the consumer market while the Clarett line is more professional.
I can hear the difference. Your summation is correct, the Clarett is more professional. Great pres and converters.
Great video. You should do more comparison like this!
Thanks. There’s a whole playlist of them somewhere on my channel.
Think it can handle the sm7b without cloudlifter?
Thank you!
Casino808 hi there. I don’t use Studio One so can’t give you a definitive answer. Maybe someone else can point you in the right direction.

@@EdThorne thanks very much, i Will try to check it out i dont mind spend more then that tho so the clarett is not a problem
I'm kind of shocked by the difference in the guitar tracks. Those were all different performances I'm assuming?
Audient is 55db + an additional digital boost 10dB boost pad.
So the audient is in the same league as the Focusrite. It just has a DSP boost which is the same as adding gain in post.
Not in terms of converters specially DAC
The video is great, between the Clarett 2 pre and the motu m2, which do you think would be more worthwhile? I record voes of rap, reggaeton, pop, salsa and sometimes acoustic guitars
I still haven’t been able to get hold of an M2 so I can’t comment on its quality. Having used Motu pres before I’d hazard a guess the M2 sounds great. I suspect the converters on the Clarett will be slightly better. Then it may depend whether you want/need ADAT or MIDI expandability. If you can, buy both and send one back after you’ve used them both 🤘
SSl2+ or Clarett?
Good question. Personally, I think the Clarett has slightly better sounding preamps but the SSL has a much higher input gain (both have clean input gains), a much better headphone amp and therefore better/easier direct monitoring. Also, I’ve heard great things about the SSL plugins. The Clarett has ADAT if you want to expand your number of inputs later though.
In this video you used the Apollo twin or the Apollo twin X ? THANKS FOR THIS COMPARISON >)
The Twin mkii.
question: does this feature direct monitoring in stereo?
@@EdThorne Yess, that is exactly what i need. As i have 2 outputs on my reverb, one is dead left and one dead right
@@EdThorne Oh okay no i wouldnt need that as i only use analoge effects. These effects just sound so good and you dont need a lot of processing power
Does the Clarett interface work as a pre amp too?
All interfaces have preamps in to amplify your microphone signal to line level. 🙂
@@EdThorne
But if I buy a separate pre-amp to connect the microphone and then connect the interface, will I get a better result?
@@EdThorne Thanks in advance for clarifying these doubts
@@ilgnerserpa1948 Potentially. The Clarett pres are very clean so if you want some classic analog preamp saturation, at external pre my help you get that. Having an external pre at least gives you the option 🙂
I got the 4pre Clarett and it's awesome. HUGE step up over the Presonus USB that I upgraded from. For the plugins, I LOVE the sound of the Red 2 and Red 3 - just beautiful sounds. The console from bx is a Meh from me. It's great for free, but for my money, and my music, having everything built into one strip isn't great. YMMV.
The Clarett sounds great. I’m not a big a Presonus fan based on what I’ve heard coming out of them.
@@EdThorne price plays a big part in it. The presents was 150$ I'm sure it is comparable to other 150$ audio interfaces. I was not prepared for the difference between that and the focusing, tho
4:28 The Scarlett feels like you're singing in a small room
you're right
hi please help me, i need to buy interface with ADAT, which is better Id14 MK2 or Clarett 2 Pre? (Sorry about my English, I'm Mexican) your videos are great.
Your English is good my friend :-) Thanks for the kind words. Personally, I would recommend the new iD14 mrkii. Better HP amp and monitor mixing app.
Ed Thorne which one do you personally prefer between the three interfaces?
The Scarlett is great value for money. I like how the Clarett sounds but the functionality of the Apollo as a desktop controller, the Unison preamp feature and the plugin monitoring stands it above both of them. Are you deciding between the three?
@@EdThorne thank you for your quick response!
Actually I'm deciding between more than those three..
I plan to get an interface with more mic preamps because I'll probably need them in the future.
Now I'm thinking to maybe get the Roland octa capture which is an old one..
Do you think that's a good idea?
No response?
Great video, what do you think about the Clarett vrs Audient ID14? I am between that two becouse a lot of people recommended the Audient and is cheaper but hearing the Clarett so close to the sound of the Apollo im confuse now.
Personally, I would go for a Clarett, I think it sounds great, however the Audient has the assignable iD button which could be useful as a desk top control feature.
@@EdThorne thanks a lot bro, great channel!!!
Ikari Mc Thank you 🙂
great videos bro
I have no idea of what to do hahaha Which one would you recommend if I am an opera singer and do extremely high and extremely deep notes? I want it to sound as similar to how it sounds live as possible. All of them sounded almost the same to me xd
Buy an external good preamp (I use ua la610) and a good converter/interface... Antelope! And you will hear you as natural as possible... I a a classical singer too... And I recommend you a really good microphone!!! I use gefell umt70s
I was surprised too. The functionality of the Apollo as a desktop controller AND interface sets it apart from other devices.
Where is the video comparison Apollo vs clarett?
I see you have Warm Audio gear, but also nice audio interfaces. Which applications do you choose hardware gear over audio interface with plugins?
Am I tin-eared or did the Clarret sound better than the Apollo?
This seems to be the common consensus.
Wow the difference was massive.
The Clarett sounds juicy doesn’t it. I wish I could have tested it on more instruments in hind sight.
hi, would you replace the clarett with a motu m2 or an ssl 2?
Casino808 No chance 🙂 The only way up from the Clarett is an Apollo or even further to a Prism or Lyra.
@@EdThorne Thank you very much for answering, I will contain my GAS, I really like the Clarett. A hug from Chile.
Casino808 Haha. The GAS never ends 🤣 I really like the Clarett too, I think it sounds great. Hi from London 🙂
@@EdThorne what about Clarett tbolt vs Apogee element, also tbolt?
wow the Clarett was the best on the acoustic guitar imo, but couldnt really hear much of a difference on the vocals, probably the Clarett and Apollo are fuller sounding, in the low mids dunno
I think you’re right 🙂
Thank you for the comparison!
Thank u man
scarlett 3:48
clarett 3:52
apollo 4:07
There's obviously more to it than just an audio interface, like a good microphone for example, which will make a bigger difference, as well what are you recording ? Will you need more than 24bit/48kHz ? probably not !!! you'll obviously be using equalizers, compressors and saturation during your mix and that will have significant effect on how your sound turns out and with a good microphone, the scarlett at 24bit/48kHz is all you'll need for an acoustic recording. As well the focusrite audio interfaces are well built and they should last you a while.
i've got cheap headphones on a lousy laptop here. I hear a huge difference.even on vocals. Universal audio dissapoints again !
Cozmovox Yeh, the Clarett really shines in this video doesn’t it.
Literally never used the air feature. Guess I should
Clarett "has more attack" than the other two. It's faster preamp. Thanks for this comparison.
@Dom Anca that is true for compressors... not for preamps
I'm just saying the preamp of clarett preserves much better the transients. The sound has more attack something like using an API preamp.
Ni idea como suena, estoy escuchando ambos equipos con mi propio equipo, ñor tanto solo estoy viendo como suena mi interfaz
hello ed thorne which interface up to 500 euro can you recommend in combination with the ev re320 and the dt 1770 250ohm greetings
4:37 Clarett vs. 4:56 Apollo
I hear some sweet sweet aliasing on the on vocal tracks
I’m not sure where you think you’re hearing aliasing, or if you in-fact mean aliasing...?
@@EdThorne In my headphones I hear a sound akin to a low quality amp sim on some of your vocal tracks. That is what I'm referring to. It's very faint.
Cheers!
