Late comment I know - but this is my go to channel, this stuff doesnt come easy to me, and I'm impatient. But I get there far more often and more quickly from here than anywhere else. The written instructin are great. Thanks Frank
Dude, love the new concept!! No surprises with my drive setup, and that’s a good thing. Love to see more of these ‘standard’ apps setups so I can check these with my own setups. Especially interested in your upcoming vid about external accessibility because I use my synology and drive setup a lot away from my own network thru my MacBook, iPhone etc.
Thank you for creating such an illustrious and detailed video clip with explanation. Truly appreciate your work. Your inspiration for a personal cloud makes me curious to migrate from Google Drive and Onedrive. I do have doubts in mind that I would like to ask for your kind answers. Since I'm totally new to NAS and Synology comes up top in my Google search. Your video has been very helpful. Please allow me to ask a dumb question. I now have USB external hard drive (Western Digital Passport 4TB and Seagate Backup Plus Silm 1TB) with me and would like to put it to good use to save some money, of course. So I'm curious to buy Synology ds120j (1 bay with 2 usb ports) and use two of my external hard drives without any internal hdd. I'm wondering if this will work or does it need any tweaks to spice it up. I really love Synology Drive and the way it works, especially when you describe it as an app you cannot live without. Thank you very much in advance for your kind consideration. Please keep up your great work ^_^
I currently have two shared folders for Media and Personal. But after watching this, it seems like it would make more sense to move those folders into the newly created home folder instead? My thinking is that it would just look cleaner to have one Sync task from Synology Drive to show 'My Drive' instead of having two tasks (ie Locations in MacOS Finder) for each shared folder. Is there a disadvantage to this setup I'm not seeing? If this setup does make sense, would there be any reason to consider moving all my other root folders into the home folder as well (ie docker, PlexMediaServer, Time Machine backups, etc.) or should these remain untouched? I am also the only user on my NAS if that context helps.
The benefit of keeping separate shared folders is if you want different snapshot/backup/retention policies. Another is permissions but if you're the only one, that's not valid. I wouldn't say there is a right or wrong way to do it, but if you want to separate those things out and have different schedules or policies, then keeping them separate makes sense. If you want it all to be the same, you can- it's really up to you.
Hello, thank you for the video... Can you please help me with my issue i can't access my files when i am in a different network! Is it something that has to do with port forwording?
Well explained, loved your vid! I am too sure the warning message you have got when you enabled the Team Folder, which says that "please do not mount remote folder or virtual drive in team folder which already been enabled". Does this mean if you already have a network mapped folder through SMB, then we shouldn't enable the same folder as Team Folder for sharing files though the Synology Drive Client? I have shared folder remotely located in office that is mapped to all local PCs locally in the office, but I also use VPN to access those files from home remotely through SMB map drives, it is not as crispy as working locally in the office, so I am thinking if Synology drive would be faster since all files are synced to my local PC then synced back to office file server. I am not too sure if this brings conflicts using SMB and Synology Drive at the same time. Thanks!
Thanks! I'm not sure exactly what warning message you're speaking of, but I've only used Team Folders that were created on the NAS. SMB mapped drives are edited directly off the NAS, so Synology Drive functions differently, where the physical files are synced back and forth to the device.
@@WunderTechTutorials The message shows when enabling Team Folder at Synology Drive Admin Console. I think your vid already had the team folder enabled so does not show up in your tutorial vid.
THANK. YOU. SO. MUCH! Truly amazing work, helped me set up my Synology Drive with my MacBook. I'll be diving in more to fully configure for my music production business. Been following you for a while and love the new look!
New DS1821+ user and a new channel subscriber here. I’m finding your Synology related content to be very helpful. Thank you! Quick question: Is there any relationship between snapshot versioning if enabled and the versioning done by Synology Drive?
Thank you! Good luck with the new NAS! No, they are separate and both are powerful in their own right. I find that I use Synology Drive versions far more frequently than the NAS snapshots, but in specific scenarios, NAS snapshots are far more powerful. I wouldn't say one is a substitute for the other, but they're both great in their own right.
Frank, I don't do a lot of remote work but Synology Drive really intrigues me. Occasionally, when I need a file when I'm away from home, I use Tailscale VPN to login in either with my browser or Windows file explorer. Once I make that connection, will the Synology Drive on my remote laptop automatically sync with my Synology NAS back home or is there something else that needs to be done ?
Short answer, yes. When you connect to the Synology Drive Client, you'll have to enter in an IP address, hostname, or QuickConnect ID. If you want to use it with Tailscale, enter the local IP, then set up the sync task. When you're local, the files will automatically sync back and forth, but when remote, as soon as you connect to Tailscale, they will start to sync as well. I have my laptop syncing this way through a WireGuard VPN and it just...works, and works very well at that.
I can relate what you described. I went off from Google to my NAS using Drive, Photos + Synology office. This basically replaced any dependency of google cloud services. Using VPN gives me access anywere from the world to it. For me at least the NAS already payed for it vs paying google for storage. P.S. in Synology drive client you can sync individual folders. This is awesome in case you run it across multiple machines and don't need every folder to sync in you Home folder. P.P.S using the backup feature is great, I use it to Sync specific folder from my PC that serves as Home folder for my work. Why you may ask? That's because before I had the NAS this folder structure existed but I wanted to have it backed in case my work laptop dies. The only negative is that you can have only 1 backup task. I believe that's because Synology intended this feature as backup for a whole Folder structure of your machine.
@@WunderTechTutorials Thanks for the response. Is this the method of remote access where I set up an openVPN on the synology and then export the VPN profile to a VPN client of my choice on the Mac?
Thanks for this great video. Could you perhaps give me a hint why I can't see my nextcloud folders in Backup or Sync Task of Synology Drive Client. I want to backup of course the data of my nextcloud folders to my Synology NAS. Thanks a lot in advance.
@@WunderTechTutorials Thanks for your fast answer. Meanwhile I found out that the Nextcloud client app on Win 11 sets the S attribute (system). For Synology drive client such folders become invisible. After calling "attrib -S nextcloud" the folder becomes visible for drive client and now the backup task can copy its files to my synology. I hope that changing the attribute has no ugly side effects.
I've had a 4 bay synology NAS sitting idle for about 5 years with just old photo backups from previous phones. I added home assistant to it about a year ago but I'm still only using Smartthings
Question. If I have a Desktop and a Laptop would you create a sync job for each for maybe Documents, Videos, etc or can you share the same NAS share with two machines so they always stay in sync?
If you access them through SMB, they'll both be in "sync", but if you want an actual sync job, you'd create separate ones on each device connected to whatever shared folders you'd like to use.
Thanks. What I thought but wanted to make sure. Great instructional videos. I’ve been in IT forever but only casually used Nas as a SMB share and Active Backup device for workstations in the past.
Hey man, absolutely loving your clear and direct info on the Synology system. I am trying to understand the difference between Synology Drive and Tailscale. From your videos and how you speak so highly of both, I have now downloaded them both. But specifically for remote access to the NAS, which is better? Are they even for the same purpose or same thing? Can I run them at the same time also? They both seem to have encrypted capabilities, but thats as much as I understand. Thanks again.
Thank you very much! Overall, they are just different tools. Think of Synology Drive like Google Drive. Tailscale is a VPN which lets you access your NAS from outside of your house. They can be used together, but one is not a replacement for the other.
@@WunderTechTutorials Thanks man, so would a good recommendation for a solo business owner who like to work remote on occasions, to always run Tailscale when away from home and access files via Synology Drive to have everything synced? I havent tried out Tailscale yet, but it almost feels like I can access my machine remotely/directly so doesn't require the syncing. Im an absolute newb to all of this and definitely don't have that expertise that your other viewers clearly possess ha.
Nice video. I've recently started moving over to Synology drive from SMB shares. What are your thoughts on the "homes" folder usage vs. separate SMB "shared folders" which are permission locked to one user. Synology Drive does have the 'selective sync' which, unlike SMB, can allow you to keep a local copy of certain files. SMB permissions on a shared drive are probably the easiest to manage. Note: I use some shared drives as actual shared drives with multiple users accessing them (e.g. family photos), whereas other drives are specific only to a user.
If you don't need different snapshot/backup/retention settings, the home folders would be my preference. When you get into needing different settings for each, separate folders as team folders would probably be best.
I am interested in buying the 923+. My question is can I plug the Ethernet cord into my Orbi satellite? My router and modem are on the 1st floor and my Desktop is on the 2nd floor. I do have an Orbi satellite next to my Desktop.
I don't have any experience with the Orbi Satellite unfortunately, but if it has an ethernet port...maybe? What about keeping it next to your router and just accessing it over the LAN?
You're use case scenario sounds exactly like mine so I want to thank you for this video and detailed instructions. The only major difference is I'm learning and running Linux, Linux Mint to be precise. So far the biggest issue Is establishing a seemless connection to Synology folders from the desktop. Linux wants to mount Synology folders as drives using Samba and there's always a delay. Sometimes it will timeout and freeze if I'm not continually accessing them. Not sure if this is a Linux issue or Samba, I'm still learning. But you've given me some new ideas to try now and I'm feeling encouraged. Thanks again for the info and instructions. Your explanations are invaluable!
Great instructional video, as always! Do you have any experience with Bit Defender reading "false negatives" from Synology sync folders? I use Synology Drive (love it). When I was away in June and accessing and updating files, I started to received daily messages about how Bit Defender had found threats and was removing the threat. Further indication indicates the threats are found in temporary Synology files - thousands of them. They are showing up in the Synology Drive temp folder. When I run a full scan, Bit defender doesn't find anything. Any suggestions?
Thank you! I haven't run into that personally, but I don't use Bit Defender. I know Synology uses some type of hidden working directory, but I didn't think it was thousands of files. Any way to whitelist it?
I was finally able to whitelist the temp folder in Bit Defender (after some research on how to do that) and that seemed to resolve the problem. Thanks for the suggestion.@@WunderTechTutorials
You can - if you have another device that's capable (preferably a router), that might be better, but the Synology option is fine for most. Totally your call though.
This new format really works IMO - fantastic upload, thank you. I'd be really interested to hear your thoughts on Synology C2 Cloud Password Manager. I noticed you're using what looks like a Logitech Brio 4K webcam that has Windows Hello enabled - I nearly bought one of these expensive cameras just so I could log into C2 Password Manager with my face rather than typing in my Master Password so often.
Thank you very much! I do use Windows Hello and love it, however, I don't use C2. I am a big fan of Bitwarden and have used it for years, but if C2 has integration with Windows Hello, I imagine it will work similarly (and the functionality overall is great).
Curious..what's the difference between this and just using NFS share.. I share a folder, and access it from explorer or linux file tool.. enter creds and map/star/link to it so I can open it up anytime easily. Is there any benefit to the Synology Drive vs direct folder access on NAS?
The main difference is that you will be able to edit the files locally and sync them to your NAS, as well as have versions of the files. There are a bunch of other things (sharing as well), but when you're editing files like that, you're editing them directly off the NAS, through the network. Slower performance for big files as well.
Hey Brother, I'm somewhat of a newb so wanted to that you for the incredible information that you share here, I refer to your “Goldmine” channel almost daily. I’m in somewhat of a pinch at the current moment and hoping you could help me with a question that I haven't been able to find a clear answer to? I will say that I wish that I had run across this video before setting up the SynD client because I now have (2) different SynD folders in my (C) drive, and another SynD folder that shows up under Quick Access, including a couple more folders which are desktop shortcuts. Over time files have been dragged over into these (C) drive folders or desktop shortcuts and it would appear that most files have been synced to the NAS. However, being a newb and having over 10TB of data I can’t honestly be for certain. My question is, now that I know that I totally jacked the SynD setup, I was wondering if I were to totally delete Synology Drive from my PC and start over with the setup, would I lose all the data that currently is located and/or appears in the (C) drive folders or desktop SynD shortcut folders? My thought is that all the data has been synced to the NAS so I'm all good, however, over time, months, I have received several errors when transferring data either when dragging over to the NAS or during the sync process that says the file name is too long and I had to select skip. I'd love to know how to alter the setting that is restricting file name length on both the NAS & windows PC because it's incredibly frustrating. I was hoping that we could possibly schedule a brief call to talk shop, but if not any advice and/or direction you could provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! You shouldn't lose the data, but I would move it off, personally. Either directly to the NAS in a temp folder (if you have enough space), or on a separate folder on the C: drive (once again, if you have enough space). From there, you can delete the task(s), create a new one, and slowly start to move the data over. Obviously, this might mean that you'll have duplicate data on the NAS, but I'd rather have duplicate data that has to be deleted than accidentally delete the data. In terms of the filename, it could be the filename itself being too long or the actual path being too long. Both happen and shortening the name and seeing if that works (or moving it to a separate, higher-up folder) are the two best steps forward. I do offer consulting sessions if you're interested, but this sounds like something that you might want to tackle on your own. Either way, here is the link if you're interested: www.wundertech.net/wundertech-consulting/
Hey man, thank you so much for the video it is perfect and informative, we are going to use it daily. By any chance can you help with the bare metal backup? Thank you.
Hey man. I really want Synology Drive to work but it seems to be buggy for my on Mac OS. I’ve been trying to “pin local copy permanently” but after a few files download the remainder stop. I have to highlight all the remaining files that didn’t download, unpin and then repin to start the process again for there only to be a few that download. I have to keep doing this until everything has downloaded. It’s to the point where it’s so bad that I don’t see it as an efficient way to work. I have found some articles online/Reddit suggesting SD is not perfect on Mac but wondered if you have experienced this and could suggest some tips for me to try? Thank you
That's definitely a weird issue but I use macOS very, very little. I have a Macbook and the extent in which I use it is generally web browsing, screen sharing for these TH-cam videos, and basic document editing. I'm never pinning large folders, etc, but the sad thing to say is that if it's happening to multiple people online, the chances are high that you just have to wait for a Synology update.
COMPLEX Question: I wanna mirror all of my Desktop PC files (4TB with music, pictures), and at a certain point 👉 I will switch to a Laptop with mostly projects/work files which I will want to mirror as well to my NAS, yet, it will be Asymmetrical since I won't carry all of that 4TB data of music/pictures with me on that laptop. So I don't want Synology to erase those 4TB from my desktop PC, since it won't "see them" on my Laptop. How can Synology Drive /or/ "Active Backup for Business" Apps- help me pull it off? Is it possible to have data that isn't mirrored and data that is mirrored at the same folder even?
It sounds like Drive would be a better option - you'd sync the data from your PC to the NAS, and only sync specific files to your laptop (avoiding anything you don't want to sync).
The main benefit is that you're editing the file locally rather than through the network (which is what you're doing with SMB). For small files (Word docs, etc), you're not really going to notice a difference. As the file sizes grow, the performance will suffer. There are other benefits as well (versions, sharing, etc), but performance and versions are probably the biggest. Versions have actually saved me a few times.
Hello I have backed up (not synced) data on my PC using Synology Drive. I am trying to restore files using the Restore option. Unfortunately, this option does not work in the Synology Drive portal, Synology Drive Admin Console and File Station. I get a message that the file has been restored to its original location, but this does not happen. I have checked this on different PCs and on the second Synology NAS and the same symptom occurs everywhere. From the Synology Drive Client on the PC, the Restore option works without a problem. What could be the problem? Do you have the same or am I doing something incorrectly.
I unfortunately don't use the backup option, so I've never really tried it in a real-world scenario, but I'd imagine you can move the data back manually if needed.
I appreciate your vids - very helpful! I'm enjoying Synology Sync but it is a little difficult when you're dealing with staff who can access some subfolders and other staff can access others - maybe a future video? Question: Can syn users actually collaborate on a document/spreadsheet the way they can in Google Drive? I need at least a few people editing the same doc at the same time. Thanks for your help.
Thanks. As the electricity supply in my part of the UK is proving to be a bit unreliable. Please cover uninterruptible power supply or UPS Power Supply. I was told to fit one the other day by my Synology NAS in an error report.! It's part two of the set-up, keeping it running reliably. I also discovered Data scrubbing, but how, when etc, is a mystery.
If I’m working with a remote editor, can I share a folder with that person so that she can add say photos or sound effects to it which will then automatically download to my NAS?
I would like if there was a video which explains how to sync (backup) Drive, which is on my DS220+, with my old DS115 which is on different location (different network). So far I didn't find any video which explained how to do it. Btw. new format is great, keep doing videos this way, they're more interesting to watch 👍
Thanks for the detailed explanation. Pretty lame that i have to enable home folders to use it, and that i need a fixed ip address, would have been great if they used synology connect account to simplyfy things. Might as well just set up VPN n my firewall/router and windows local cache for the same result.
@@WunderTechTutorials that’s great, thanks. Still have to decide if I want to enable Home folders and then try to figure a way to hide them for each user….
@@WunderTechTutorials No it works. It however conflicts with MSI proprietary software. I have definitely fine tuned it down to that specifically. So if a user is not using a MSI laptop/Mini PC/Tower you should be fine. @MSI
That is really interesting. I have an MSI motherboard and run some sort of their software, but I never had problems with it. Definitely something I will keep in mind though, thank you for sharing!
A couple of questions: 1. Why would you want to use On Demand sync when a mapped network folder gives you exactly the same thing but faster and without using extra resources in the form of Syn. Drive client and Server? 2. To my, possibly naïve, mind, it makes much more sense to use this software to allow you to access a local file stored on a fast SSD much more quickly than having a copy on a slower NAS filled with slower HDDs, which is what most NAS boxes typically have. Synchronisation between local drive and NAS can then happen in the background. Does this not make sense? 3. Doesn't it make sense having any shared folders mapped directly to a separate drive on my PC(s) rather than being forced to embed them in a folder called SynologyDrive on that drive? After all, the software is perfectly well able to do without an extra layer of folders on the shared folders on the NAS, so why does it need that folder on you local drive(s)? again, IMHO, the user interface is clunky and unforgiving of mistakes, so after a whole day of messing around with it last week, I gave up and binned it and cannot understand why so many people on TH-cam sing its praises, as I think it's a great idea very poorly thought out and implemented.
1. A mapped network drive uses the network for reading/writing. If you're editing a document, you're not going to notice it, but if you're editing a 10GB video file, without an enhanced network (2.5Gb at minimum, preferably 10Gb), it'll be painful. Honestly, even with a 10Gb network like that, it'll probably be slower from an editing perspective than the local drive (assuming you're using a device with an NVMe drive). 2. Short answer, yes, that's the idea. If you want to set it up this way, your only real decision depends on the On-demand Sync option. 3. I go over this in the video - you need to uncheck the option for the SynologyDrive folder and it'll use the top level folder and you won't have to embed it. I think a lot of people sing it praises because you need to compare it to other tools like Google Drive, Dropbox, or OneDrive as opposed to a mapped network drive (which has its place). The setup process can be confusing, I agree with that, but once you get passed that, you're looking at a fully local, private cloud that can handle all of your syncing, versioning, and backup needs. For things like video editing or really anything that involves large files, on-demand sync is a game changer. Using video editing as an example, there's no real reason (IMO) to edit video files over the network, it will only slow down your process. Having the ability to selectively sync what you're working on, then freeing up the space when you're done is an amazing option. It's not for everyone, but if you get passed the setup process, I think you'd be very happy with it. I'm really not lying when I say it's my favorite application, but I get it - it's not for everyone.
@@WunderTechTutorials Thank you for your very rapid reply. I read with interest your comment about un-ticking the 'Create new SynologyDrive folder' but that doesn't work if you're trying to sync, in my case, a shared folder to a physical local drive. It refuses to allow you to do it, telling the user 'You don't have permission to write to this drive' or some such nonsense. I find this statement ridiculous as it's my drive and of course I have permissions to write to it! This is the gripe I have with Syn. Drive. It's a great idea but badly thought out and implemented. My thinking is this: I have four PCs which I use, only two of which have a fast-access storage. For the past 120 years or more, I've been using a NAS as a centralised storage from which I can access my data from anywhere. I recently bought a new PC in which I've installed a very fast SSD for my programs and a large capacity MVMe M.2 drive on which I'd hoped to have a copy of my data in separate partitions reflecting the drive mappings on my other PCs but, being local, would afford me much faster access to that data. The only way I can do it is to have an extra level of folder inside the local drives, thus making the directory structure different from the other three PCs/laptops and I cannot, for the life of me see why that's necessary. I'm now looking at Resilio Sync, also available on the NAS boxes to see if I can achieve what I'm looking for but cannot find any up-to-date information on it to see if it'll do what I'd like. It seems like I'm going to have to spend countless hours of trial and error to see if that works 😞. However, your helpfulness has earned you another sub 🙂 - thanks.
Hi... When I try to sync second folder it keep showing "this directory cannot be synced because one of the subfolders in the directory is being used in an existing sync task".... I need to sync 10-12 different folders from teamfolder please help me with this
One thing to consider carefully before committed to fully move from Google Drive to Synology Drive is those suite of Google web apps and their tight integration with Google Drive. For example, you could create Google My Maps files from your Google Drive and be able to open your maps directly from it. Aso those suite of office apps like Google Doc, Google Sheet, etc. that may have a different level of features support comparing to Synology Office app.
Great question. I don't know to be honest, but I think they're technically different. I haven't used DS File (honestly, I don't think ever), but if my memory serves me right, I think it was designed to allow you to access Shared Folders (which Drive technically does, but then you're setting them as "Team Folders").
Is there a way for me to have a temp save, where it doesn't take up my device space, but it also won't be using all of my data. For example, I would l8ke to be able to watch videos in an "offline" mode, similar to the way YT all9ws for offline vid playback or similar to any streaming service that offers an offline connection feature.

@@WunderTechTutorials Thanks for taking the time to reply! I looked everywhere for an Advanced Settings option on macOS, but couldn't find it. So thanks to google I came across this on the Synology site: "On-demand Sync on macOS only supports two-way sync mode and does not support filtering files by file size, filename, or file extension. When enabling On-demand sync on macOS, the Advanced option will become unavailable." I did, however, come across a way to manually edit a config file in the terminal to filter files and directories and it seems to be working great. Just a pain that it has to be done that way. Hopefully Synology will correct that soon. Thanks again for what you do! I think I can speak for a lot of people that you're the go-to resource when it comes to Synology info and tutorials.
Thanks for the kind words! Ugh, I am a novice Mac user (still learning after using Windows forever). I use on-demand sync on Mac, but never tried to filter files with it. Sorry for the bad info but glad you got it working!
I've been using this for a while only certain things don't make sense. Example. I have a folder titled Sina on my pc which is synced to my nas. I also have drive on my phone syncing my photos. However, I can't find them anywhere on my nas. Go figure!
Are you using the "My Drive" folder by any chance? If so, you should be able to open File Station on the NAS, then go to homes > username > [folders]. That final level should contain the data!
Don't forget Synology Photo's mobile as one of the best synology apps. A bit offtopic offcourse. Nice to see your face for the first time. I must say I had a completely other idea who you would be. But I am affraid to say 😂 (Much older).

@@WunderTechTutorials it’s fine on pc, drive on iPhone won’t open a file, and excel cannot have drive as a source location which leaves me still needing to use Dropbox just so I can edit spreadsheets in the go 😫

I think there are three good applications for such a syncing-approach: 1. Large files that require random access (e.g., video files) and from multiple devices. For those it is good to have them locally, as well as on a shared location. 2. Sharing files with users outside your network. For the latter Google Drive (or similar) is much better. 3. Being able to work on files while being completely offline. For anything else, I find it easier and less storage redundant to use Samba shares. Perhaps there is a fourth reason for a syncing-approach which is to cover devices that cannot handle Samba shares (like phones). I like Google Drive, as it supports collaboration with users outside my network and allows me to work on the files while I'm offline. As I don't have any need for "1." above and "2." is not supported by NAS-based syncing, and I don't need to non-local copies of files that I'm not sharing with users on other networks, I don't think Synology Drive makes any sense for me. Am I missing something? FWIW, your videos are really good, but to round this one off, I think it needed a section as to when a Samba share is just sufficient or even the better solution.
Thanks for the response! I can only speak for myself, but from the day I started using Synology Drive, I haven't accessed a file through SMB unless the data is destined to live there with almost no interaction (media files, etc). In cases like that, I'll access it through SMB and transfer the data to/from, etc, but for anything I am actively working on, it's all done through Synology Drive. Even for basic Word documents that can be easily edited through the network. I can't give you a specific reason as to why I only use Synology Drive for these files, but I think it can only be summarized by the whole application itself. Versions aren't something you think about until you actually need them, accessing your data on mobile phones or web browsers with the app is actually useful, and you'll never complain about editing or viewing a file locally, but you might over your network. The setup process to me isn't that cumbersome once you understand it, and on-demand sync works incredibly well. I don't share files with it, or work with a team, but I use it in some capacity almost every single day. With that said, I do agree that strictly sharing files is better using Google Drive or another cloud tool. I'm not trying to convince you to use it and I think everyone should make the decision for themselves, but I genuinely mean it when I say that it's my favorite tool.
@@WunderTechTutorials Thanks a lot for the in-depth reply. I can see that if one wants the syncing approach for one reason (and hence sets up everything, including having clients run in the background) then it is very convenient to do almost everything in this manner. It relieves one from deciding and thinking about where a file is and how to access it. Thanks again for the reply.
Synology Drive is great. However, no one can offer me a solution as to why my Android phone fails to connect using its Synology Drive app when the desktop client functions correctly. Forum posts I've seen suggest this is a problem for the Android app that appears not to have any solution. Synology support simply say it works for them, which is not helpful at all. I am at my wits end as to why it won't connect using a phone. One thing I saw was to disable Private DNS within the network settings on the phone. Doing this doesn't solve the issue. There is something fundamentally wrong and no one can tell me what. Has anyone here had a similar issue?
Just to test, try and remove the DDNS hostname and change it to the local IP address of the NAS. See if it works when you're on your local network (where the NAS is). If it does, it's a port forwarding issue when you're outside of your local network.
Thks buts synology drive is just too complicated for me. Really the concept of local client caching of a remote NAS data is straight-forward. However I never came across a good top-down explanation of synology drive yet.
Thanks for watching! Do you mind highlighting what piece you're missing? I tried to cover everything in this video, but if I can add anything to the written instructions to help clarify, I'm happy to do it.
@@WunderTechTutorials Thank you, that's very gracious of you. I'm interested in using Synology Drive to sync folders from my computer to my NAS. I'm used to synching with pCloud where it's straightforward: simply right click the folder on your computer, select sync to pCloud and off you go. You can repeat the same actions for every folder you want to sync. As far as I can see things aren't quite so idiot-proof on the Synology. First you must select a folder on the NAS and give it permissions before you can do anything else. I understand this and I tried it and it worked. But I have other folders I need to sync and when I try I get told I can't do it because this folder is already being used to sync. Is it true that you must create a new folder with new permissions for each and every sync task you create?
Ultimately, yes, you must sync folders on your NAS (whether they're team folders or regular folders) to a different folder on your PC. You're most likely doing everything correctly - you just have to go on the PC and select a different folder as you can't have two sync tasks linked to one individual folder.
@@WunderTechTutorials I'm trying to set up a 3rd sync task and failing, so there's clearly something I still don't understand about how folders are structured on the NAS. Every time I create a new folder, say as a sub folder, and then try a new sync task, Synology Drive Client refuses on the basis that the enclosing folder is already being synched.
Synology Drive Client v. 3.4.0 15724 Can't sync desktop.ini My Synology Drive Client has stoped syncing the files beacuse it can't sync desktop.ini. Still a great intro to Synology Drive. Got me up and running in no time. Thanks!
Late comment I know - but this is my go to channel, this stuff doesnt come easy to me, and I'm impatient. But I get there far more often and more quickly from here than anywhere else. The written instructin are great. Thanks Frank
Thank you very much for the kind words! Glad the videos have helped!
By far the best Synology channel. Great, in-depth, and straight-to-the-point tutorials.
Thank you.
P.S. loving the new format.
Thank you for the kind words!
Thank you very much! Video should be coming in the next few weeks (I hope)!
Hi, if the NAS is connected to the C2 cloud, what happens if the NAS is switched off?great content
Thanks! The data should stay in C2.
Please keep up your great work ^_^
Thanks! It will not unfortunately - you need to use internal hard drives with Synology storage pools.
Yes, it only works locally by default. You can use QuickConnect or a VPN, but overall, you just need a way to access the NAS when you're remote.
Glad it helped! Thanks for the kind words!
Hi!. Is there a way to select versioning per user or if you enable it is for ALL users?.
I don't believe so, unfortunately. It's in the Admin app so I believe it applies to all.
Great, thank you!
Great video, great editing. Got my new 1522+ sitting here, waiting on the drives to be delivered, and watching your vids for some pre-learning.
Thank you very much! Hope you like the new device!
Por fin puedo ver el rostro de la persona que siempre nos habla claro detrás de cámara!!! Saludos Caballero!
Thank you very much!
Always nice to hear how others are using the tools. Thank you for sharing, and thanks for watching!
Can I use Time Machine on Mac OS to backup my Mac to my Synology NAS remotely, from a country different to the one where the NAS is located?
Yes, you'll need to set up a VPN.
Thanks! When you say that, do you mean on your local PC? If so, are there NextCloud sync tasks on those folders already?
@@SeymourStudio Yes, that would work! You wouldn't necessarily have to use Synology Drive, though that's generally my preference.
Another great video. Continuing my learning. Still drinking from a fire hose 😂
Thank you and good luck with it!
Do you use a different user account for each device you access Synology Drive with?
No, the same for every device and that allows everything to stay in sync.
Great.
How would I go about properly setting up the synology box & my router to have a secure access to it over the internet?
I'd recommend a VPN if that's an option for you.
@@WunderTechTutorials Running VPN on your NAS a good idea too? or get a 3rd party service?
You can - if you have another device that's capable (preferably a router), that might be better, but the Synology option is fine for most. Totally your call though.
How do you rename the "Drive" folder stored in the home directory share? I'd prefer it was named "SynologyDrive" in my home folders on the NAS.
I don't think you can, unfortunately. That's used for the application itself.
On a Mac, where can I find the Synology Drive with command line?

Thank you.
Thanks! What exactly are you looking for in terms of the bare-metal backup? Just the options available?
No we need help with the usb when we insert it and boots says that does not have the internet drives and we cannot proceed.
You probably need to download the drivers. I've run into that issue a long time ago, but that was the solution.
Ok thank you very much will let you know if we succeed.
@@WunderTechTutorials Can you recomend where to get the drivers?
@@WunderTechTutorials yeah I think I’ll have just wait for the improvements to come. Thanks for getting back to me
COMPLEX Question: I wanna mirror all of my Desktop PC files (4TB with music, pictures), and at a certain point 👉 I will switch to a Laptop with mostly projects/work files which I will want to mirror as well to my NAS, yet, it will be Asymmetrical since I won't carry all of that 4TB data of music/pictures with me on that laptop.
Is there a way to get a notification that a file is in use by another user when it is opened? when using synology drive client not smb share
Not that I'm aware of, but if you can, it'll possibly be in the notification section.
Thks so much for this video, how to make thats synology nas accessable from local network to public internet access?thks so much
There are a few ways to do it! th-cam.com/video/fuVdM-4a3Kk/w-d-xo.html
Cloud aside is there any benefit to using it locally versus SMB shares? I heavily use SMB locally and I can’t really see how Synology Drive fits in…
The main benefit is that you're editing the file locally rather than through the network (which is what you're doing with SMB). For small files (Word docs, etc), you're not really going to notice a difference. As the file sizes grow, the performance will suffer. There are other benefits as well (versions, sharing, etc), but performance and versions are probably the biggest. Versions have actually saved me a few times.
Off topic but what computer speakers are those?

Hello
I have backed up (not synced) data on my PC using Synology Drive.

Excellent video Frank. As always. In depth, clear and concise. I personally love Synology Drive and can even remember using google drive.
Thanks for watching, Avi!
I cover that in my Synology NAS setup video - definitely an important part of any configuration!
If my Synology drive is hibernating- Can I wake it up from my phone to get access to the files?
Unfortunately, the only real way to do it is with wake-on-LAN, but I believe you can do it through QuickConnect.
Thanks, Awesome video
If I’m working with a remote editor, can I share a folder with that person so that she can add say photos or sound effects to it which will then automatically download to my NAS?
Yes, but both of you need to be able to access it. Meaning using a VPN, QuickConnect, etc (for the external user).
I would like if there was a video which explains how to sync (backup) Drive, which is on my DS220+, with my old DS115 which is on different location (different network).
So far I didn't find any video which explained how to do it.
Btw. new format is great, keep doing videos this way, they're more interesting to watch 👍
Thank you! I will add that to my list - definitely one of the better things to do with a VPN if possible!
@@WunderTechTutorials I use Open VPN and have tailscale set up as well on my DS220.

Thanks for the detailed explanation. Pretty lame that i have to enable home folders to use it, and that i need a fixed ip address, would have been great if they used synology connect account to simplyfy things. Might as well just set up VPN n my firewall/router and windows local cache for the same result.
If you're using QuickConnect, you can use the QC ID as opposed to the internal IP.
@@WunderTechTutorials that’s great, thanks. Still have to decide if I want to enable Home folders and then try to figure a way to hide them for each user….
this was very useful for me, thank you for your perfect work.
This software conflicts with my device and replicated it on other devices. Not sure if it is Nivida or MSI specifically. I will research further.
That's definitely strange. Does it not work at all or you just receive some type of error?
@@WunderTechTutorials No it works. It however conflicts with MSI proprietary software. I have definitely fine tuned it down to that specifically. So if a user is not using a MSI laptop/Mini PC/Tower you should be fine. @MSI
That is really interesting. I have an MSI motherboard and run some sort of their software, but I never had problems with it. Definitely something I will keep in mind though, thank you for sharing!
A couple of questions:
I need to sync 10-12 different folders from teamfolder please help me with this
You cannot sync the same folder twice. That's most likely why you're getting that error. It's a system limitation, unfortunately.
Can Synology drive and OneDrive co-exist on a folder?
I believe they can, but I'm not positive unfortunately.
Great point!
Any theory if/when Synology will retire DS File? DS File seems unnecessary now that Drive can sync and access NAS files.
Yes, if you use on-demand sync, any of the clients will allow you to do that.
Hi, one question, video thumbnails does not show in client drive, its a pain in the ass having to open the files to look at them, I have been looking for a solution without any luck, any suggestion? thank you
Not that I'm aware of :-( Have you considered reaching out to Synology to see if they have any ideas?
@@WunderTechTutorials there are cases or I don't remember how they call it, suggestions or requests since 5 years ago, people asking for the same. For me is unusable, if I knew that video thumbnails were not supported I have never bought it. There is a workaround that I'm gonna try, but its stupid thing that should be easy for them to fix, not sure why they haven't. Anyway thank you for responding! Cheers
@@aaronhdzt It's funny because I never noticed it until you pointed it out, but yes, it's very annoying now that I notice it. Hopefully something they fix in the future. Good luck with the workaround!
I am using Synology since 2 years. But I am not able to Do speedy Download or uploads, even after hooking up with 500Mbps internet !!! Plz help, the max Speed I am getting when downloading via other device is 500-700 Kbps only !!!
What are you using and where are you hitting those max speeds? You're not using Synology QuickConnect, are you?
Hello, i have the same problem. i'm a pretty new user and when i'm accesing remotely with Drive Cient via Quick connect i just get 100kb/s , Syncronization process for locally pinned files are extremely slow.. Is it a matter of configuring something wrong or is it just quick connect that causes this bottleneck problem? @@WunderTechTutorials
If you're using quick connect, switch to using something better like tailscale
Thanks for the video. Anyone got “connection failed” after installing the SD client in Windows 10? Tried port 6690 on router and allowing the client in defender firewall. Nothing seems to work 😢
Also I can only see homes and not home folder in Admin console
Are you using the local IP address to connect?
@@WunderTechTutorialsIt worked when I typed the web address or local address without the HTTPS port number. Your channel is amazing. I am just a novice when it comes to networking 🙄
@@niccopernicus8966You'll get there! Glad to hear you got it working!
Is there a feature to ignore a certain file or folder? Or better yet, an option to ignore EVERY folder named "node_modules"?
Yes, you can use the "file filter" option in the sync advanced settings.
@@WunderTechTutorials Thanks for taking the time to reply! I looked everywhere for an Advanced Settings option on macOS, but couldn't find it. So thanks to google I came across this on the Synology site:
"On-demand Sync on macOS only supports two-way sync mode and does not support filtering files by file size, filename, or file extension. When enabling On-demand sync on macOS, the Advanced option will become unavailable."
I did, however, come across a way to manually edit a config file in the terminal to filter files and directories and it seems to be working great.
How it works with MAC OS
It works well!
Don't forget Synology Photo's mobile as one of the best synology apps. A bit offtopic offcourse.
Nice to see your face for the first time. I must say I had a completely other idea who you would be. But I am affraid to say 😂 (Much older).
Btw, I have shown my appreciation many times before. But I never said this. As a not native speaking person (I am from The Netherlands and speak Dutch) your way of speaking is very good. Not to fast, but not to slow either, clear and therefore understandable.
😂 I've always had a really deep voice, so I understand! I completely agree - Synology Photos video coming in the future!
That's great to hear - I appreciate the kind words, thank you!

I can’t seem to open a spreadsheet and edit it on my phone like I can with having the file on Dropbox….. any ideas ?
Is that on Synology Drive? It opens for me in the app, but I believe you can use third party apps if you'd like.

Another great video. Thanks
Thanks for watching!
When you login to Synology Drive, what exactly are you using? QuickConnect, Internal IP, etc?
Thanks for responding. I am using the same DDNS host name as on the desktop app.@@WunderTechTutorials
Just to test, try and remove the DDNS hostname and change it to the local IP address of the NAS. See if it works when you're on your local network (where the NAS is). If it does, it's a port forwarding issue when you're outside of your local network.
Thanks for the tip. I will try that. What I can say in the meantime is that ports 5000, 5001 and 6690 are open.@@WunderTechTutorials

Happy to answer any questions you have.
Lost me at ‘go to DSM’, as if DSM is a thing people who are looking for a ‘beginners’ setup guide would be aware of
Do you own a Synology NAS?
I’m sorry but this is a bit confusing. You’re covering so much ground so quickly it’s leaving me unclear about the concepts.
Happy to help with what you're confused about.
@@GCW123 For the folders you're syncing, are you syncing a top-level folder that already contains the subfolder you're trying to sync?
