Do not be bias, the whole movie is a gem. Benicio's story stands out because his character still believes his country is still the best. He is a true patriot for his country.
Benicio's accent in this movie sounds very Colombian. It's not Mexican at all. From the comments I see that other Spanish speakers also noticed the same thing. It doesn't take away from his performance, though. He was still phenomenal in this role.
I am afraid to say that even if Del Toro wouldn't sound too Mexican, it doesn't sound too Colombian either. For sure you are not from Hispanic Culture to state such a thing. The most Colombian thing in his accent it is the sound of the "s", softer than other Spanish accents, I would say.
Listen to everyone elses spanish in the movie. They all sound like real mexicans. Very natural and he sounds so different. His accent sounds somewhat like a colombian accent.

His accent really doesn't mater here because this is an American movie and most Americans wouldn't know the difference. Same as Mexican, Puerto Rican, Colombian, Cuban, Spanish and sometimes Italian actors are all interchangeable in American movies. I actually think his accent adds a subtle comment about the cultural ignorance of Americans.

Benicio doesn't sound like a Colombian. That's the Tijuana/San Diego "pocho" accent. I'm sure he built the history of his character as "that Mexican border policeman" who must have been working "de mojado" on "the other side" and the pocho accent stuck on him. It seems to me a precedent that gives great credibility to his character. And for sure that made all the awards he won for that role.

I appreciate the comments. I learned my spanish - 2yrs in Nicaragua (yes I know it's shit awful to most people) but I could not understand most of what BDT was saying because of the accent. Been through mexico a bunch. Good to know I'm not crazy. :D

El General Salazar es Cubano pero hizo bien el acento de un Mexiquense. Por otro, el acento de Benicio del Toro es Colombiano.
Tomas Millan és un gran actor. Ello tambien habla Italiano sin ningun acento, mucho talentoso.
