Had the privilege and pleasure to see "Zappa plays Zappa" tour many years ago, in a venue called the Thebarton Theatre in Adelaide, South Australia. I'd seen many bands play at this venue over the years, but never had I seen it literally packed to the rafters as it was this particular evening. Standing room only, the aisles were full of fans, from the front to the nosebleed section. And when Steve walked out, the place went mental. It was an eruption of pure delight, and it was a great surprise, because Steve Vai hadn't been announced previous to the night. It was fantastic to know that so many Zappa fans besides me were still around in Adelaide, and I'm sure Frank would've been proud and pleased as punch that Dweezil and Steve were on the same stage, playing his material. RIP Frank, hope you're jamming with Neil Peart, Chris Squire, Jon Lord, and so many more that we've lost.
This song changed my life. In a big way. I was in the studio as a teenager when Steve was working on this. My friend John Sergio spent literally all night recording the bass track for it and those were some of the most treasured hours of my life. Helped me see how music should be performed and how much care and attention went into it. To spend 6 hours recording A BASS TRACK. Steve is a master. And he was so thrilled with the super long harmonic note. It was a thrill to see him thrilled. 🧡🧡 SV
He learned from the best Frank Zappa how to do it right in the studio & live.( once in a lifetime situation with FZ, like wet sponge Steve absorb everything). This is an amazing song that will put you in the right place. FZ would be proud!
Creativity in soloing, not songwriting. Although his latest album definitely moves himself out of the "jam" mode. I'm not really criticizing him, and we are all truly blessed that Vai was present for Zappa's absolute sense of composition. Vai probably would only have been an uninteresting shredder were it not for having to play stuff that isn't just an extended solo over a riff.
I was lucky enough to see Vai play on his birthday at the Roseland in Oregon. He shook my hand after the show and my guitar playing has been magic ever since.

Mr. Vai, as usual you NEVER cease to invoke MANY emotions while playing. Rare is ( I believe ) the ability to compose something so melancholy yet uplifting at the same time. A true master player you are but an absolute GENIUS WRITER. May you live to be 100 years old and continue to grace the world with your incredible work.
He is so incredibly good many try to duplicate or cover his songs but there's something they don't have and that's Steve's little tricks to the sound that comes out when he plays he's absolutely the best
What?! You mean something can never be truly duplicated because everyone does it a little different. Wow! We did not realize that! Thank you for enlightening all of us.
It's actually incredibly difficult to play it exactly like the album version, because all the little harmonics whammy bar manipulations requires perfect acoustic conditions and no flopping on any movement. I've seen Steve perform this song many many times in live versions and he can never nail all of the sounds perfectly, but that's okay too, sometimes there's some quirky and nice harmonic "overshoots" and sometimes the wrong harmonic frequency rings out, it's all part of the charm of a live version. What a solo section it must have been to come up with in the first place, I can just imagine Steve thinking about the melody of the solo and then thought to himself "wouldn't it be great if all of this was just harmonics"?
