It's a popular misconception that they were called "Immortals" at the time, that was just what Herodotus called them and despite being the father of history he was notoriously unreliable when it came to foreign cultures. "Lighter units of hypaspists and peltasts" ? Im sorry but the Hypaspists were the king's guard how are they "lighter" than the standart phalangite ? They were the most experienced troops on the battlefield second only to the Heitaroi (which served as Alexander's mounted king's guard). The Hypaspists even formed up on the right flank of the Phalanx which was the position of honor in Greek armies. Again second only to the Heitaroi aka The Companion cavalry which formed even more to the right signaling their higher honor.
Alexander had roughly 3,000 of hypaspists prior to Granicus battle. They had to form at least one "rectangle" on the animated battlefield. I knew that somebody will point out their "lighter" character. What I meant was that they were "light" (more nimble, agile and mobile) compared to regular Macedonian phalanx. I'll try to give them few sentences on the upcoming Battle of Gaugamela to avoid any misunderstandings. Thanks for the comment.
BazBattles As I understand Hypaspistai fought as classical hoplites in the old phalanx formation which was still compact and slow moving ... Maybe its the Peltasts you mean as lighter and more mobile since they were in essence elite assault infantry . Oh and I mean the elite peltasts which were hypaspists or agyaspides (silver shields) equiped as peltasts to serve as assault infantry ... *15 years* of continuous fights undefeated Capturing the greatest part of the then known world against *superpowers* of his time while being *vastly out numbered* and away from his central kingdom and not capable to have a sufficient line of reinforcements due to limitations of transport and economy of that time doesn't "just" make him the Greatest conqueror of antiquity but *of all time*. His dominance was not only non existed before his time but also not met an equal till the present day. We can argue that in terms of landmass he has been surpassed by other empires such as the mongolian or the english empire. Yet in all the cases we see vastly superior (technological and trained) armies with much better reinforcemt to defeat vastly weaker enemies or tribes.... (example English VS what? native indians? native americans? asian tribes? ) Alexander the Great isnt just the greatest conqueror of antiquity but the greatest of all time none has come even close to his achievements both in battle and in legacy. Legacy which quite plausibly would continue much further had he not fell ill at a young age and died because of that. While as I said we can dispute its achievements comparing landmass as if any piece of land has equal value and determine that there were bigger empires under such terms we can not dispute that the mass majority of the global population of the time was around the mediteranian and asian lands he conquered rendering *2 out of 3 people in the world* being under Greek rulership. Thats why Greek became the common spoken language of the time. Its not a coincidence that his title as "The Great" is internationally accepted and not propagated only by his countrymen (because there are a few kings called "the great" in human history but mostly this fame is limited by their own country people)
what happened to the video about the granicus river? maybe its another channel with the same style? im just sure i saw it on this channel, and i really wanna watch it again...

For those interested, here is a list with some notable history books by credible Historians, regarding the legacy of the ancient Greek Kingdom of Macedonia; “Alexander the Great. Man and God”, Pearson, Harlow 2004, by Ian Worthington. “The Miracle that was Macedonia” by N. G. L. Hammond. “By the spear. Philip II, Alexander the Great, and the rise and fall of the Macedonian empire”, Oxford University Press by Ian Worthington. “The Rise of the Greeks” by Michael Grant. “Alexander of Macedon, 356-323 B.C.: A Historical Biography” by Peter Green. Truly masterpieces.
Made me realise that Alexander was kind of a dick to Parmenion. Parmenion was like almost alone on the left flank with no support and always the last one to get aid from Alexander and his forces. That is understandable because Alexander are in the far right flank and reinforce the center is more logic. Im actually suprised that Parmenion did survive all the battles :O
Yea I know, but I don't like it that much, so I've designed my own one. Archer unit is a fresh one (on my channel), and I'm not yet quite sure how to handle them to achieve smooth and slick result. As for "fire!", from now on I find it cringy too, but can't change it anymore :)
It seems as though Alexander won simply due to luck in this one. They were losing in every section of the field and the companion cav seemingly got lucky on the left flank, and then with all the panic, the persians fled. Persian cavalry on the macedonian right could've done a "hammer and anvil" strike upon the sarissa phalanx, and that would've been it. Had the commander of the persian cavalry been wiser, history would drastically have changed.
So long as the thessalian cavalry was operative, the persian cavalry could not leave that fight. The failure on Dariuses plan was to assume his cavalry would win its flank before Alexander could break trough. That, and fighting in a narrow field where he could not abuse his superior numbers.
He made the same mistake that I do in total war and charged his second infantry line into the back of the first, creating a useless blob of infantry that is easily surrounded and slaughtered. If they had been held back and used to support the right flank against the elite cav of Alex then the Persians would have won.
Not really. Alexander just managed to defeat Persian left , before Darius cavalry did it on their right. Yes , Darius couldn't abuse his numerical superiority by fighting in narrow field , which was mistake, but struggle of Macedonians on the left and center shows that Persians weren't some weak opponents , like many revisionists accuse them. Also Darius was competent enough commander and remembered his mistakes. Assembling new army he gave cavalry longer spears , gave infantry bigger shields , made adjustments to chariots and wisely chose battlefield at Gaugamela , preparing it beforehand where he could fully use his superiority in numbers , especially in cavalry , which was of very good quality and chariots. However , as we know , Alexander managed to deal with that as well due to his brilliant tactics.
We need a full review of all battles of the Peninsula War such as Salamanca, Badajos etc. the impact of Wellington’s steady progress across Spain, welding dubious allies together and eventually entering SW France is greatly underestimated. He achieved a lot with quite little and created Napoleon’s bleeding ulcer. He also showed early signs of his genius on the battle field.
Alexander and his commanders knew the limits of his army and was able to use this knowledge to its full advantage on the battlefield. Remarkable leadership, because this was a battle the Persians should have won. Thank you for your presentation.

(example English VS what? native indians? native americans? asian tribes? )
Alexander the Great isnt just the greatest conqueror of antiquity but the greatest of all time none has come even close to his achievements both in battle and in legacy.
I think the commentator used for the first few videos had a really thick accent and people were hating, so they removed the videos :/
that's fucked up man not only did I love his videos more, but I thought his voice was just fine. If he really took them down over something like that then I'm pretty disappointed. Baz should have stood up for the guy instead of just taking the videos down
yeah i know right??? his videos were soo good, and i really wanna watch them again. i cant watch this series without the start, which he covered gracefully.
I love your videos! One thing makes my eye twitch though. It's CAV-al-ry not CAL-va-ry.
How he pronounced "Ephesus" bothered me too. :)
But dang this is a great channel.
For those interested, here is a list with some notable history books by credible Historians, regarding the legacy of the ancient Greek Kingdom of Macedonia;
“Alexander the Great.
Battle of Guagamela please.

Such an underated channel
Made me realise that Alexander was kind of a dick to Parmenion. Parmenion was like almost alone on the left flank with no support and always the last one to get aid from Alexander and his forces. That is understandable because Alexander are in the far right flank and reinforce the center is more logic. Im actually suprised that Parmenion did survive all the battles :O
That makes what happens to him even worse 😓
Well in my opinion that's because he knew that Parmenion being the experienced general he was would be able to hold on his own.
Well done ! Thanks !
"OUR KING IS RUNNING FROM THE BATTAFEEL! SHAMEFUR DISPRAY!"
Wtf
The voice improved alot! Very nice.
Keep this voice actor please!
Terrific video!⚔️🏹
Sorry but there is a proper symbol for archers and I just find fire being their command cringy
Yea I know, but I don't like it that much, so I've designed my own one. Archer unit is a fresh one (on my channel), and I'm not yet quite sure how to handle them to achieve smooth and slick result. As for "fire!", from now on I find it cringy too, but can't change it anymore :)
BazBattles Ah that's fair, it's more obvious for people who aren't as aware. And sorry if it sounded really shitty I was having a grumpy morning :P
You make great videos man keep it up!
CAVALRY.
THEY'RE IS NO "L" BEFORE THE V.
STOP PRONOUNCING IT CALVARY.
Exactly what I was going to say. Not having correct pronunciation somewhat detracts from the accuracy of the commentary.
“They’re is no “L””. Oh that’s special. While trying to be critical, you said, “They are is no “L”.
Cry me a river.
Whilst technically correct you lose all credibility with your inability to spell.
keep going guys this is awesome!!
Puriwara in every sector besides tactics
He got carried by the excellent army that his father forged, just like in most of his military campaigns.
Every time you mispronounce "cavalry" a part of me dies.
Good video though.
Are you ever planning on making videos on Alexander's earlier battles and sieges, like Thebes and Granicus?
He did one on Granicus but its unlisted now, i'm pretty sure you can still find it on his twitter though.
