    Considering the PC 10 is a core range whisky almost everywhere available at a good price and the quality inside the bottle is good to it done well against the single cask kilholmen. Enjoyed this review series 👍

    I agree that there is something more illuminating about contrasting two whiskies that you don't pick up when enjoying a single dram. This was a very interesting comparison. Really two very different animals here and a real contrast of flavors-- it is apples and oranges. Great review. Keep up the great content, Erik.

    Thanks, and very good reviews 👍.
    I try to find similar reviews from people that I can relate to that seem to have a similar palate to my own. After sampling many scotches from all the regions I now find myself an islay guy pretty much exclusively, but anything peated I enjoy. ARDBEG 10 and PORT CHARLOTTE 10 are without a doubt my two favorites. I switch back and forth pretty much nightly between the two. Two fantastic non-colored, un-chill filtered whisky's from islay. Can't go wrong either way.👏👏👏

  • @ronaldbeerguy

    The price difference of the Kilchoman would be the deal breaker for me unfortunately. Being Canadian we get taxed to death in the first place and the Bruichladdich is already a $150 CDN up here. That’s said you do get the odd sale prices that make the more pricier bottles easier on the wallet. Fun and entertaining little series to watch nonetheless. Out of all the whiskeys the Ardbeg or the Laphroaig are still the best price to quality ratios for my taste.

    I think the Kilchoman Loch Gorm would have been the better choice for this series.
    I know it’s about 9 years old (well, close enough) but it’s from Kilchoman’s core range. And in my book, it’s the best (about) 10 year old core range peated Islay, even better than the Port Charlotte 10 which is one of my favourites.
    Of course, it’s more expensive than the other 10 year old core range Islay whiskies.

      Offcoufse its out in the first round it's only 40% abv the Laphroaig I literally taste watter. Everyone complains here in Europe especially since the CS is just superior. How could they do it the bastards make the normal one only 40%. I would rather pay 15€ more for 46% than the damn watered down Laproaig that sells here at 37eu.

    Fun comparisons. Springbank 10 perhaps as an outsider...The single cask Kilchoman's can be special, albeit pricy & difficult to source if not in those fortunate areas that get access too (I'm lucky that way). I find Kilchoman shines using the ex-bourbon approach. Can't wait ;).

    Great fun! Really enjoyable video and well presented. I really thought the Kilchoman would win. However, I guess the price difference is significantly larger than the difference from Ardbeg to Port Charlotte. Therefore I can see why you gave it a tie rather than a point to Kilchoman.
    I have to admit, I haven’t had any Kilchomans yet. So, I’ll put it on the list of smokies for my next whisky order.

    Would this still be described as a Sherry Butt Finish since it was aged the entire time in a single sherry cask? I've had 3 bottles of the Kilchoman single bourbon cask. A 10 year old and two 11 year old's from the same cask. One of favorite whiskies and I did a side by side against other Islay cask strengths - the Corryvreckan, Laphroaig 10 CS and the Lagavulin 12. The Kilchoman came out on top. A little pricy at $150 (NJ/NY pricing), but worth a splurge every so often. I'll have to try the sherry single cask next. Thanks for the review.

    • @ErikWaitWhiskyStudies
      @ErikWaitWhiskyStudies  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are correct, if it spent 100% of its time in Sherry butt is is not "finished". If I said it was "finished" then I goofed.

    • @ErikWaitWhiskyStudies
      @ErikWaitWhiskyStudies  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Laphroaig 10 Cask Strength vs Port Charlotte... that would just be mean..... Laphroaig 10 CS is an awesome whisky (I have batch 10) and I am sure it would beat Port Charlotte. But, if I had thought of it earlier I might have put the Laphroaig 10 CS in the competition. I might do a Cask Strength Competition and Laphroaig 10 CS in that battle.

    • @100puremustard5
      @100puremustard5 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ErikWaitWhiskyStudies You're right! That would not be a fair fight. Heck a lot of times Laphroaig 10 CS beats Corryvrecken... and I prefer Ardbeg over Laphroaig! I recently finished my batch 009 but still have batch 010 and 011. You should do a Laphroaig 10 CS vs Corryvrecken vs Lagavulin 12 CS!!! The STD's have been talking about this for a long time but haven't delivered. Maybe you should beat them too the punch! Cheers!!!

    Hi Erik, totally with you reg comparable quality of some standard vs some special bottlings. Ardbeg comes to mind with Ooogie and Corry being on par with (many recent) annual Ardbeg Day releases, especially the abv-reduced ones. There it's also more a matter of cask type variation than quality per se. But also Laga 12 cs are so amazing in my eyes that they tend to give the (otherwise pretty good) nas Jazz Festival releases a run for their money. :-)

  • @MrChristopherMolloy

    That PC10 is about $60 in NYC and worth every cent. I haven't had a chance to try to that Kilchoman yet, but I've got some samples on their way from Scotland from a friend and I'm hoping this one's included. The one Core-Range Peated Islay 10 you skipped is the Bunnahabhain Ceobanach, which is (or was?) a 10 y.o. as stated on the back lable; but perhaps they've removed that of late? Cheers!

    • @ErikWaitWhiskyStudies

    • @andrewpage6029
      @andrewpage6029 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think Kilchoman is annually releasing single cask whiskies with the age statement increasing each year. The 10 year old sherry single cask is still available in some shops around me - as well as the 11 year old bourbon single cask. Both were last year releases and I expect them to come out with 11 year old sherry/12 year old bourbon this year.

    • @andrewpage6029
      @andrewpage6029 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      100% Islay is a lighter-peated whisky made from a vatting of sherry/bourbon casks, usually from a mix of a several vintage years. It is an annual release and is different each year. Last year's was the 9th edition. And it is made entirely from barley from Kilchoman's farm, which is next door to their distillery.

    • @Imreadingthisaloud
      @Imreadingthisaloud 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Lagavulin is corporate owned and is mass produced with high speed machinery. Kilchoman is a privately owned distillery, bottling its own spirit and nothing else.

    • @danielspitteler5938
      @danielspitteler5938 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Imreadingthisaloud This. For me it's not only the end product that counts. I will happily pay some extra to support their independence and craftsmanship, wich will hopefully in the end result in even better whiksies. Many praise older bottled (read 1980 and earlier) whiskies because of the quality it had back in the day. One of the reasons for that quality is smaller businesses/ more attention to quality instead of quantity.
      Almost every bottle Kilchoman releases is a limited edition per year with different set of casks and ages. Wich they are very transparents about (also something we should support more). With only the Machir bay and the Sanaig as an execption on that.

    • @danielspitteler5938
      @danielspitteler5938 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Also I think the Kilchoman might be higher in price in the US compared to EU (I live in the Netherlands). I can pick up Machir bay for around €35-40, Sainag €45-50, Loch Gorm €80, 100% Islay €65-75 and Single Casks go between €80-150. (for me SC are the most value becease of the higher ABV, I like to water them down after a few sips, wich brings out more flavours. Adding some water makes it that you have to use less whiksy per glass)
