What did you do at 20:24-20:25 when that entire rim part hollowed?
Select the face and in the toolbar right down is "Hollow a Solid" or press F and type "Hollow Solid"

I find solid modeling easier than surface
Surface is more for advanced stuff. Like car exteriors.
