In Sinatra's youth, before smoking and age took their tool, the timbre of his voice was simply unsurpassed. For an equally lovely ballad, check out his version of "I Fall in Love Too Easily" (1945). Dick Haymes had the only comparable voice in his era. Despite Sinatra's youthful look, he was 28 when he made this film. Note the superb phrasing that all big band singers acquired, but Sinatra perfected. In this scene, the beautiful French actress, Michele Morgan, and pianist Arthur "Dooley" Wilson complete the trio.

If only he didn’t lose his voice to his habits. Sinatra (If he never smoked and kept all that vocal prowess) and Tony Bennett would’ve been the big stars of the 50’s, 60’s, and onwards

You are completely correct but smoking wasn't the actual the reason his voice went duller. Years of singing 100 songs per day destroyed It (though smoking defiantly made it worse) and on top of that he had a Vocal-Chord Hemorrhaging that made him loose his voice for serveral months. While it is no doubt smoking didn't help it, it wasn't the main reason.

I'll take Frank over anyone no matter at what age. There are three people whose names will be easily recognized in 100 years - Sinatra, Marilyn Monroe and Ali.

@@aaronam0115 Are you just being facetious? Must be because Frank was massive in the '50s, '60s, and beyond. Much bigger than Tony. Matter of fact, Tony credits Sinatra for giving his career a giant push due to Frank praising his voice.

    I couldn't sleep a wink last night
Because we had that silly fight
I thought my heart would break the whole night through
I knew that you'd be sorry
    And I'm sorry too
I didn't have my favorite dream
The one in which I hold you tight
I had to call you up this morning
To see if everything was still all right
Yes, I had to call you up this morning
'Cause I couldn't sleep a wink last night
I didn't have my favorite dream
The one in which I hold you tight
I had to call you up this morning

Sinatra at his absolute best.; the 1940''s ballads with Axel Stordahl. The swingin' Sinatra of the 50's & 60's never had any appeal for me.
I think this was his Hollywood movie debut, 1943 Higher & Higher. Followed by Step Lively in '44 & Anchors Aweigh in '45

Young Sinatra had THE most amazing voice I've ever heard. As he got older and it got deeper, it lost this beauty. Although i do still love "swing" Sinatra, big band Sinatra of the 1940s is the greatest.

I prefer early Sinatra, too. A sweetness that was later lost. While I appreciate the great albums he made in the 50’s there seemed to be too much of the supposed swinger creeping into the performances. It actually embarrassed me a little.

I also agree that 40's Sinatra is completely unmatched. however his early 50's work is quite similar in terms of phrasing and inflections but of course his voice darkened as did his life but a good example of Sinatra maintaining this excellence would be the song "I've got a crush on you" the live performance from his role as Danny Wilson was just a perfect as his singing in the 40's in my humble opinion
