I saw an interview of both of them about the time this movie premiered. Each was full of praise to the other. Baryshnikov commented that learning Hines' style was very hard for him. He said that the tap and jazz styles required a relaxed foot and loosened spine and that the focus came mostly from the thighs--a complete opposite of the training he'd had all his life. Kudos to both for absorbing enough from each other to produce this amazing dance.
Rereading what I wrote brought back a long-forgotten memory of another two utterly dissimilar artists who managed to create a bit of magic, this time from television. Luciano Pavarotti, reigning king of opera enthusiastically agreed to spend some time with one of country music's legends, Loretta Lynn. Loretta, for her part, was shy and absolutely terrified of performing in front of the elegant and sophisticated operatic giant, but Pavoratti was almost as famous for his charm as he was for his soaring voice and he coaxed a couple of songs out of her, my favorite being the evocative and touching "Pregnant again", beautifully shown in part three of the three part sequence. Regrettably, I can't find the whole thing, only bits, none of which feature Pavarotti singing. But watch him melt in Part 3. @Just me Just me Perhaps he's less precise, but his arms and shoulders are more emotive and active than Baryshnikov's more static frame. Don't mistake different styles for lower caliber.
Baryshnikov has perfection: every move stopped at any second is picture-worthy gracious. Hynes is excellent but he looks a bit plain next to Baryshnikov. :)

It just clearly is not Ballet and doesn't require the same relentless training . Neither do Linedancers generally have to starve themselves or ruin their feet as Ballet dancers frequently do.
Legendary dancer and choreographer Twyla Tharp did this choreography! She has spoken and written about how interesting and challenging it was to create steps and flow that highlighted both of their formidable yet very different skills without favoring one over the other. Possibly the 1st (and best) ballet "pas de deux" for two men, ever. Brava, Twyla. 🌹
Gregory steps on time an Baryshnikov floats on air, great scene capturing both of their strengths. It's like Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire in modern day.
What I love about this is the fact that we can actually notice the different backgrounds of each dancer. They're both great and do the same thing but in a diverse way.
I think I’ve watched this 100 times Gregory Hines loss hurts the art world and the thought of Gregory Hines teaching Baryshnikov just makes me smile because Misha was so humble about learning I will never get tired of watching this. If I’m upset about something this is my go to.

Forgive me Lord, but all I could see was Baryshnikov (and, I'm ashamed to say, that I thought that whoever suggested this to Gregory Hines ((who in any other setting, I love)) was no friend).
Not only two brilliant dancers but also equally brilliant camerawork. It takes a true cinematographer to keep up with not only the actual chroeography but the soul and nuance of this scene. The more I watch it the more I'm impressed with how beautifully it's shot.

This scene showcases just how great both of them are. It's not easy for a ballet dancer to branch out so fluidly, but Baryshnikov does it so well. And Hines was one of the best tap dancers at this time, and you can see it here. They mesh so perfectly, I love this movie!
Interesting to watch the different interpretations of the same moves. Baryshnikov always points his toes and fingers and focuses on getting his extremities gracefully outlined. Hines is more centered in his power, lands more squarely on his heels instead of toes, focuses on his hips and chest and personal core strength. Both are beautiful and elegant, but very different in their subtleties.
Marialla They somewhat remind me of the comparisons between Astaire and Kelly. One of the main differences I’ve read about said that Astaire’s center of gravity was higher, as is often the case with shorter people, and Kelly’s was lower. I can see that in all the close to the ground moves, spins, etc, which Kelly did, while Astaire stretched up more often. That also accentuates the difference in what was said to be Astaire’s more elegant style, and Kelly’s more athletic style.
Hines is more loose, while Baryshnikov is more structured. Like two lead guitar players where one is classically trained and the other is all feel. Both achieve the desired outcome.
Two totally different dance styles but synergized so homogeneously. Gregory Hines is a "tap" dancer & of course, Baryshnikov, the preeminent ballet dancer in his prime. The distinctions you noted supports both their unique dance styles.

Yes! I loved this movie as a kid. I never really understood why ADULTS were bad mouthing the idea of two dancers from different training not only dancing well together but, complimenting each other.

I remember when Gregory died. I was on my way back from AZ to the Midwest after getting a call my mother also passed. I was trying to drive straight through, had to stop at hotel just got too tired. And then heard in the news about Gregory, he had liver cancer ( I believe) but hardly anyone knew. Gosh , I really felt bad about him, had just seen him perform and was one of the few great dancers we had. He was so young too. Been a long time. Time is sure going by so fast, so many ‘gone’ too. 💔. 😪
Sammy Davis Jr. was a guest at a performance by Hines. Hines urged him on-stage. (Davis was dying of cancer and this was his last public performance.) I was worried. Davis was obviously weak and ill. But with every step he took towards the stage, power grew in him. Stunning. Davis did an unplanned short routine. Hines got down and kissed his feet! As Davis walked back to his seat, the power left him. It was immensely touching.
+mhks68 Exactly. One need to realize that there is a difference in hoofing/tap dance, and dancing. Greggory was a hoofer/tap dancer, and he showed that he could obviously dance, hence the movie.
Gregory Hines like a lot of those from his generation could do a lot of things exceptionally well. His death was a shock, but I still think about how talented he was.

He was one of my heroes growing up. A lot of little girls want to take ballet (nothing wrong with ballet but it wasn't my interest). I want to learn to tap dance the way he could because I looked up to him so much. But of course I got pushed more towards ballet so I know a little about both styles and what I love about this movie is they each are such clear masters of their crafts while also depicting the act of learning from each other, and that's a really hard thing to do.
Oh My Word!! Just this short clip really shows how good a dancer they both are. This is fantastic! The world lost a truly great talent when Gregory Hines passed away in 2003 at the too-young age of 57. Gregory, you are missed 😢😢😢
If you had told me there was a dance scene in a movie that was a perfect blend of 80s soft rock, ballet and tap, I'd have said, "I'll believe it when I see it." Well, I believe it now.
My eyes used to be on Mikhail, but then it changed. Gregory has an easiness about him that I have learned to appreciate. Of course, every step Mikhail takes is measured and perfect, but it is not relaxed. He is the perfect ballet dancer, and Gregory is the perfect tap and modern dancer.
It's not ballet, it's not tap, it's not soft shoe, it's just dance.Pure dance.Mikhail comes from ballet and Gregory is from tap and jazz. But here, the two of them side by side , both with the desire to share that satisfaction what compels the a single movement [dance] so...in this the two are equals. Beautiful.... Just perfect !

Two of the most, in my opinion, of the amazing dancers of the time. I never got tired of watching Hines, power and grace, and Baryshnikov, well he just floats over the floor.
Mr. Hines was probably the most under rated dancer of his time. He brought his style to dance along side a trained ballet dancer, and although different in style, never missed a beat!
One of the BEST dance sequences of all time. Two different styles of dancers combining into one! Stellar performance! 👏 ❤ this is still hittin different 40 years later
Ballet is upper body lift with the diaphragm, jazz is low weighted, weight on thighs, flexed knees, feet in contact with floor. What you see are two different dance techniques. Both are sublime in their individual styles. The very best of the living dancers in my humble opinion.

Terri Geer~ Absolutely! That is probably the number one best dance performance I have seen in all of my 51 years. I was in ballet and I can't even begin to put into words how difficult those moves that he did so easily and flawlessly are. I could watch this a thousand times and never get enough!
Actually this straight, 65 year old guy completely understands it: Male panache, utmost confidence, smooth as a lion stalking its prey, yet with grace.
Hines is a wonderful dancer, but when Baryshnikov is in the picture ,I can't take my eyes off him. When I was young, I studied with Janette Lauret, who had been a prima ballerina with the Ballet Russe De Monte Carlo. She taught the Russian tradition and always reminded us to think of a string at the crown of our heads, pulling us up. Baryshnikov always rotates around that center axis, running from his head to his feet, he never loses that in any part of the choreography. I'm so happy I found this video. What a treat!
When I saw this dance sequence in the movie I was completely mesmerized! I already admired both men and their different dance styles. When I saw them blending both styles so beautifully and so magnificently... it was brilliant💓 I will never tire seeing this dance routine. Two of the world’s most talented dancers/actors. Gregory Hines was taken way too soon. I can just imagine them collaborating many more times!
Gregory Hines always made dancing look so easy, that I thought I could do it too. Mikhail Baryshnikov made dancing look so magical, that I knew I needed some dance lessons. 😄

Don't get me wrong, I love Hines's interpretation of this as a tap dancer, everything about it is exuding "this guy is a tap dancer" in the best way possible, even though he's not really even doing any tap within the number. The power, the agility, the bent stature, the groove. But something about Baryshnikov's dancing is just so stunning i can't take my eyes off of him the whole time. Maybe it's because I was a classically trained ballet dancer so I look for the grace, the pointed toes, the turned out feet, the lightness, the fluidity between motions, the elongated lines. Idk. But Baryshnikov is just stunning to watch. He's fantastic doing this in pants and boots haha!
Misha has total and utter control of his body. But also I've noticed that when he goes still, he goes still. The way he can perfectly stop, no matter what he's doing is amazing.
I never get tired of this dance. Over and over again for years I come and watch. I'll never tire of it. I remember the first time I saw it. They are legends.
It's so great seeing two incredibly talented dancers demonstrating the differences and the similarities of dance styles. Tap and ballet are so different, but both require extreme control. I watch this movie regularly for all the dance scenes. Love it.

Twyla managed to create choreography that not only challenged each dancer, but pretty much summed up the plot of the movie. Two totally different men want to escape the shackles of Russia. They are suspicious of each other, they argue and fight all the time, they tread carefully, and secretly but can kick hard when the moment comes and takes leaps off faith and a mad dash. In the end, their smooth catlike charade will show Russia just who is in charge. Prove me wrong!
This movie came out in the middle of my massive crush on Mikhail Baryshnikov. It was like a gift from the heavens. I'm still nostalgic about it to this day. 💘
Absolutely a brilliant movie and the fusing of two genres. Gregory with his lose emotional interpretation of dance and Mikhail with his expertise in the technical aspect of dance. You can certainly see the years of service in Mikhail's moves and it's a wonder to watch. Gregory has the grace of some of the greats that went before him...the Fred Astaires and undoubtedly his inspiration, the legendary Tap dancer Teddy Hale. So beautiful to watch

+mhks68 Exactly. One need to realize that there is a difference in hoofing/tap dance, and dancing. Greggory was a hoofer/tap dancer, and he showed that he could obviously dance, hence the movie.

Gregory Hines like a lot of those from his generation could do a lot of things exceptionally well. His death was a shock, but I still think about how talented he was.

It's always sad when talented people die. The world is diminished by the loss of true talent.
He was one of my heroes growing up. A lot of little girls want to take ballet (nothing wrong with ballet but it wasn't my interest). I want to learn to tap dance the way he could because I looked up to him so much. But of course I got pushed more towards ballet so I know a little about both styles and what I love about this movie is they each are such clear masters of their crafts while also depicting the act of learning from each other, and that's a really hard thing to do.
I can never take my eyes off Gregory Hines when I watch this. He is amazing.

Oh My Word!! Just this short clip really shows how good a dancer they both are. This is fantastic! The world lost a truly great talent when Gregory Hines passed away in 2003 at the too-young age of 57. Gregory, you are missed 😢😢😢

My eyes used to be on Mikhail, but then it changed. Gregory has an easiness about him that I have learned to appreciate. Of course, every step Mikhail takes is measured and perfect, but it is not relaxed. He is the perfect ballet dancer, and Gregory is the perfect tap and modern dancer.

Mr. Hines was probably the most under rated dancer of his time. He brought his style to dance along side a trained ballet dancer, and although different in style, never missed a beat!

Ballet is upper body lift with the diaphragm, jazz is low weighted, weight on thighs, flexed knees, feet in contact with floor. What you see are two different dance techniques. Both are sublime in their individual styles. The very best of the living dancers in my humble opinion.

A wonderful description of the styles. The tight and precise classic ballet moves and the loose-limbed, deceptively casual and elegant tap..I love them both. This was one of my favorite movies growing up...
As a former student of dance it is in the strength of your legs with upper body for balance and expression.
Having taken both, I can attest that they are complete opposites.

Hines is a wonderful dancer, but when Baryshnikov is in the picture ,I can't take my eyes off him.
When I was young, I studied with Janette Lauret, who had been a prima ballerina with the Ballet Russe De Monte Carlo. She taught the Russian tradition and always reminded us to think of a string at the crown of our heads, pulling us up. Baryshnikov always rotates around that center axis, running from his head to his feet, he never loses that in any part of the choreography. I'm so happy I found this video. What a treat!

When I saw this dance sequence in the movie I was completely mesmerized! I already admired both men and their different dance styles. When I saw them blending both styles so beautifully and so magnificently... it was brilliant💓 I will never tire seeing this dance routine. Two of the world’s most talented dancers/actors. Gregory Hines was taken way too soon. I can just imagine them collaborating many more times!

Don't get me wrong, I love Hines's interpretation of this as a tap dancer, everything about it is exuding "this guy is a tap dancer" in the best way possible, even though he's not really even doing any tap within the number. The power, the agility, the bent stature, the groove. But something about Baryshnikov's dancing is just so stunning i can't take my eyes off of him the whole time. Maybe it's because I was a classically trained ballet dancer so I look for the grace, the pointed toes, the turned out feet, the lightness, the fluidity between motions, the elongated lines. Idk. But Baryshnikov is just stunning to watch. He's fantastic doing this in pants and boots haha!
Yes, Baryshnikov has control over every millimetre of his body. Incredible!
Misha has total and utter control of his body. But also I've noticed that when he goes still, he goes still. The way he can perfectly stop, no matter what he's doing is amazing.
They're both exceptional in their own way. Baryshnikov's dancing is like Van Cliburn, while Hines is like Miles Davis or Dizzy Gillespie.

I never get tired of this dance. Over and over again for years I come and watch. I'll never tire of it. I remember the first time I saw it. They are legends.
Same. And the scene looks like it was filmed today -- other than the use of a cassette and the old TV the KGB guy has.
It's so great seeing two incredibly talented dancers demonstrating the differences and the similarities of dance styles. Tap and ballet are so different, but both require extreme control. I watch this movie regularly for all the dance scenes. Love it.

Twyla managed to create choreography that not only challenged each dancer, but pretty much summed up the plot of the movie. Two totally different men want to escape the shackles of Russia. They are suspicious of each other, they argue and fight all the time, they tread carefully, and secretly but can kick hard when the moment comes and takes leaps off faith and a mad dash. In the end, their smooth catlike charade will show Russia just who is in charge. Prove me wrong!
You can see the difference in their background! Neither one is better than the other ! It's just uniquely their own!!

Absolutely a brilliant movie and the fusing of two genres. Gregory with his lose emotional interpretation of dance and Mikhail with his expertise in the technical aspect of dance. You can certainly see the years of service in Mikhail's moves and it's a wonder to watch. Gregory has the grace of some of the greats that went before him...the Fred Astaires and undoubtedly his inspiration, the legendary Tap dancer Teddy Hale. So beautiful to watch
