ur comment about corny limp bizkit is 10000% accurate to chocolate starfish. hands down no question. i beg you to go back and relisten to significant other front to back. to me, its the epitome of what an album should be. from an era where albums told a story. you can see and feel his hurt from losing his gf, the stages of grief through my way, nookie, rearranged and break stuff. intertwining a b plot of how his step forward in life causes the loss of other relationships and cultivates new toxic ones with im broke. all encompassed with the songs that reflect his distraction from it all, the party tracks like n2 gether now and 9 teen 90 9. i wont get into too much detail incase you want to rabbit hole this into a video on its own. cheers Finn!

Nothings changed for me. Been listening to KoRn, Slipknot, Bizkit, Linkin Park etc for over 20 years now and that will never change. I’m so happy to see the next generation discover and embrace the life.
Slipknot was my favorite band in middle school. If you would of told me back then that they were in the same genre as limp biz kit and Linkin park I would of said you’re crazy
same here mate, Im 34 and been into Limp Bizkit since 2000, still my favourite band, even though I listen to everything from Sia to Zeppelin, from Hans Zimmer to Ice Cube, and from Prodigy to Bob Marley. I was kid back then when rocking the red cap, and now I have a son myself...how time flies.
The music just got old enough that the young kids that listen to it now are the equivalent of that the kid who listened to the classic rock bands when you were young are the, more precisely classic metal, music that would of been shunned by the masses then but seen a giant resurgence decades later due to the bands they inspired making music in genres catered to the younger generation.
Both of my high schoolers and their friends listen to 90s-early 2000s rock almost exclusively. I’m proud, but also saddened that rock has fallen so far that teens need to go back 20 yrs for good rock music.
It hasn't fallen, there's plenty of great rock and metal now. It's that things come in cycles. When I was a kid, 70s and 80s were in. Now it's 90s and 00s
Tons of good rock music now. It's just not as mainstream with pop and rap taking over that in the last 20 years. Rocks better now than it's been before Emo.

I cannot emphasize how important Joey Jordison's drumming on Iowa and the self titled slipknot album was for bringing genuine metal drumming into the mainstream. Blast beats and all. RIP Joey and Paul 👑
i remember my friend once played Snuff on his car and as soon a the drums kicked in after the second chorus i immediately knew it was Joey on the drums. He has that signature sound and style that is pretty rare although there's other amazing drummer out there. Btw i never heard Snuff before that and i thought its a new song so..
Igor is a great drummer creatively speaking. Joey was just as creative and better technically speaking. Also, someone praising someone else's influential work, when that person was never accused of plagiarizing anyone's work, doesn't need a shit talking nasty comment from a know nothing underneath it.
This is so validating to me because I was THAT tween who was into Nu Metal in the late 90s and early 00s. It's good to see people stop bashing it and start appreciating the impact it made on metal. (Korn was my first concert and I used to be hesitant to say it because people WOULD judge.) Even tough it could be corny, the riffs still live in my head 20 years later.
Korn/Rob Zombie The Rock is Dead was my first rock concert. I am lucky to live in a place where all us medal kids liked Nu Medal back then and still do. The hate for Nu Metal is through socal media.
The band Chicago was my first concert, back in 1988. I'm not ashamed of it, nor am I ashamed that I like a lot of music out of the Nu Metal era. I'm still jamming on Korn, Slipknot, Limp Bizkit and the like, to this day. I don't care what anyone thinks.
I'm a 90s kid and i was there for the birth of nu-metal. So good to see it making a comeback, and all those songs really do still hold up today. There's a lot of great material for kids these days to get into.
I couldn't comprehend why pop culture hated it in the past when obviously bands were making money on tour especially being signed to a professional metal music contract. Maybe Satan himself who knows? Jealousy for screaming and vocal frying goes far I guess.
Nu metal never left for whose to frequently listened it back in the 90s. I never stopped to listen to Deftones, Linkin Park and incubus and some material of nonpoint. System of a down is on the radio almost every day here in Brazil

I'm an 80's kid and I'll admit that grunge and nu-metal are basically shit. Just because I was around the crap in my teens doesn't mean it's decent music. Hell, Agalloch wasn't even a band until I was married with kids and it's better than 99.9% of nu-metal.
i'm a 16 year old girl who got into metal a few years ago (slipknot, rammstein, bloodywood to name a few). for me i got into it because my parents used to listen to some of it when i was younger, and now i have a sense of nostalgia tied to the music. i've always liked guitar riffs and heavy drums but i always protested being a metal fan as a kid because it was too violent for a young girl, but i'm so glad i rediscovered the genre with this new explosion of popularity. metal just lets you express emotion like no other genre does, and the community is like a big family. i love it here
My 16 year old daughter is exactly the same. She grew up with me & her Dad playing all kinds of music but mostly rock, metal & nu-metal. Now she almost exclusively listens to nu-metal & hates most modern music, especially new hip hop.
i'm in my 30s and i got into metal through those same bands as a 12 yr old girl. recently i was wearing a band shirt in public and a group of teenage girls approached me because they noticed and wanted to talk to me about the band. i actually found it pretty funny and depressing in some ways because they opened with "wow, i didn't know anyone else was into such an obscure band...." (it was NOT an obscure band, lol) and then when we had talked for a while i found out they werent even born the first time i went to a show. it is awesome that young people are discovering such good music but overall depressing that there hasnt been comparable music coming out for decades. also i think like in the video and form my RL experience its great that teen girls feel like they can get into metal now, being a metal fan and a teenage girl in the early 2000s was not fun. metal culture was a lot shittier towards women back then and it sometimes made you feel like an outcast in a genre that was supposed to be "for" outcasts
What I've always found interesting is that we spend our middle school and early high school years trying to distance ourselves as much as possible from the music our parents listened to. But then we inevitably hit a certain age and I think nostalgia takes over and what was once so 'uncool' becomes cool again.
I'm 20 as of 12 am today, and most everything my parents played was metal and rock for all of my life, I'm pretty sure the similarities in music is half the reason they ever got together, either way it's interesting to see how the music ive been listening to my whole life gets picked up so quickly considering 5 or 6 years ago i would get odd looks for talking about the music I enjoyed
Korn!!!! As a 38 year old now, i went through Nu meatl in its infancy late 90s early 2000s. I'm happy to see it getting revamped with the younger generation.
I’m 42 and have been to 32 Korn concerts and had the pleasure of meeting the guys. Good times always. Nu-Metal is and will always be good music for me.
Nu Metal was my gateway into metal and still holds a special place in my heart to this day. My four favorites growing up were Deftones, Slipknot, Limp Bizkit and System of a Down. Other bands I enjoyed were Nonpoint, Project 86, Powerman 5000, Static-X, POD, Linkin Park, Crazy Town, Jerk and These 5 Down.
I think another huge part of it was that when I put on a Korn CD or System of a Down CD as a kid, you could immediately tell by their style what band it was. A lot of nu-metal bands have their own distinct and identifiable sound, that most new metal bands don't have. The over production, breakdowns, and vocals are all almost identical to like 5 other bands.
As a Deftones fan, it's crazy to see them catalogued as a nu metal band again, but it's also crazy to see them gain popularity from newer generations. It certainly makes me happy to know people are into such a great band!
Nu Metal, like Grunge is one of those genre terms that are used so loosely that it barely has meaning. Basically if you were a rock band that got famous in those eras you're grouped in with the terms. Outside of the dropped tuning I don't think of half of the bands as really doing the same type of music.
Deftones were one of the og greats of the genre. White Pony is one of the best albums to come out of that era. I still listen to it. Digital Bath is a masterpiece of a song.

I think a big problem of todays Rock/Metal scene is that people are "afraid" of being Rockstars. It feels like a lot of them are afraid of being called "sellouts" or a lot of them are afraid of what other people think about them in general. Take a look at the biggest "persons" or "charecters" in the Rock and Metal scene right now. Oli Sykes, MGK, Ronnie Radke. What do this 3 persons have in common? They all DON`T GIVE A *F***** what people think about them, and they are (obviously) bigger than 99% of all the other persons in that scene.
@radamtv4779 Finn is promoting the idea that bands need to be controversial, whether or not it's authentic, for the sake of marketability. That kind of business school mindset is often the antithesis of this generation's motivation, especially among the nerds who are making a lot of the contemporary rock/metal today (imo) As an aside though, if you want to see a high quality, contemporary front man, look up any live Viagra Boys performance. I think people now have an affinity of Nu-Metal just because of the fact that heavy-hitters like KoRn, Linkin Park, Deftones, etc. have hit 20+ years in the game now. It's considered to be "Dad Rock" so to speak for a Millennial generation. Let's not forget that during the late '90s and early '00s that the Hard Rock / Post Grunge era was the staple during the time. Nu-Metal was still niche. Older people and Gen Z are reviving it because their parents listened to it.
90's metal and alternative was just so well balanced... Nu metal was the popular gateway that also led people to rewind and discover older bands like Pantera, Rage against machine, Slayer, Metallica, Alice in chains, etc... hooks, heavy riffs, and great songwriting made that era special.
As a gen z, I got into Nu Metal in the late 2010s , from youtube, and not tik tok . Everyone made fun of me , and then 5 years later , this video comes out

Nu Metal didn’t take itself seriously. It embraced being weird/different. And bottom line … it was FUN. There was a huge swath of time after Nu Metal where everyone was trying to be Uber serious and forgot the FUN aspect. You don’t need the musical chops of Tool (love them too). You don’t need super deep lyricism. Just write a fun song that people can jam to or vibe to. I’m glad that’s coming back around.
to be honest, i know so many tracks who aren’t funny or just for jam / having fun. I recommend to listen to some Korn or Slipknot songs (just as 2 very popular examples). Jonathan Davis made a song about the abuse he suffered from his dad when he was a kid, others go on mental illness or are completely political critical. Nu Metal was far from „fun“, it showed pretty hard the issues of my Generation (Xennial - born 1981). Sure, we had some „Party-Music“, but that’s tiny if you compare it to the whole genre.

As a 41 year-old who went to the very first Family Values Tour show (in Rochester, NY), saw Coal Chamber live when Rayna was still in the band, and now have endless playlists with Deftones and Slipknot in them, I approve this resurgence 1000%!😂

41 too, saw Korn in Paris in 96, Sepultura in 95 for the ROOTS tour which was actually one of the 1st Nu Metal albums (produced by Ross Robinson with a feat. from Jon Davis) was there in 99 when Slipknot started and became a fan instantly. No need to over-analyze this: it’s cyclical, what was trendy 20 years ago comes back, that was predictable. Like when we were teenagers there were many of our peers into stuffs from the 70´s I’m sure you had a few friends into THE DOORS or Jimi Hendrix etc. Now NO ONE listens to them.
Been a Nu Metal fan since the beginning. Great song writing, good bass lines, and drum lines. Lot of different lyrical styles between singing, screaming, rapping, wispering, and growling. It not the same cookie cutter songs done by everyone like must other genre of music.
And a lot of the big name Nu-Metal bands are all quite distinct from each other! Even casual fans can tell them apart by their looks, vocals, guitars, and drums!
Been of Deftones fan since 2000 and saw them multiple times live back in the day. I’m glad a new generation picks up this timeless band. But when it comes to girls loving Deftones, it has always been that way. Deftones always attracted a diverse crowd.
As a girl, I'm saddened I didn't get into them before 2015, I liked every single I heard from them, but for some reason, it took Chino's other band, Crosses, to get me into them. I've seen vatos who like them as well, it tripped me out a little.
I saw Korn in 2000 to 2006 and 2012 amazing each time. But the 2002 concert I have to admit I didn't love as much because I thought I might die. Oh my God we were at the front of the stage when they came on and they started playing here to stay and it was just insanity. I finally fucked my way to the edge of the crowd and I said I will not go back in there again. The rest of the show was amazing Disturbed trust company and RA where are the opening acts

Deftones was the soundtrack to many of my friends and I's addictions and I'm sure for many more people. The romantic ethereal highs and the harrowing grimy lows just fit that lifestyle so well. It's also just amazing music. All of Chino the singers bands are worth a listen. Especially crosses.
Deftones definitely fit into the snobby hipster elitist mentality for people that need validation from others. Like “I only listen to genuis level bands and artists” attitude. Other than Deftones the appeal of Nu Metal now and then is that they’re just fans themselves. They were not pretentious, the lyrics are straight forward and easy to identify with instead of the read between the lines type thing. All different walks of life were welcome and the musical influences on the bands themselves reflected that
Honestly...LP's strength was the combination of Chester and Shinoda. Like the Deftones, they had different backgrounds with different musical styles and figured out how to meld them into something that appeals to everyone.
the dynamic of chester and shinoda is very similar to the dynamic of syn/the rev to zacky/m shadows. it might sound weird but hear me out. syn and the rev came from backgrounds in jazz, classical and prog rock primarily whereas zacky and shads had a background of punk, hardcore and metal primarily. it's more subtle than the fusion that lp did but there all the same. in a7x songs you see power chords, d beats, octaves and punk shouting followed up by technical grooves on the drums you'd hear on like a king crimson track and an extremely flashy solo that is actually really complicated in terms of musicality. it is infinitely more interesting to hear bands where each member grew up on different types of music

Most other bands weren’t. But they saw it as something bad somehow. I feel like the main reason was the reaction of critics that hurt Mike’s feelings back when Meteora came out. Anyways, they are still one of my favorite bands and oh I wish there were a couple more albums like the first two… New music that came out this year proved once again that that’s what many fans love them for and that’s where their talent laid.
LP didn't combine Mike's and Chester's ability. Their writing style was like playing a game of 'Hot Potato". It mostly starts with Mike Shinoda and then he passes it to maybe Brad(guitarist) or Rob(drummer) because Mike can play guitars too. and then Pheonix uses his bass guitar on the demo. Then there is Joe Hahn with his samples and beats. And finally; Mike and Chester or sometimes Brad sit together to write lyrics. And they did re-write them hundreds of time because they sang over the music track for their entire first two album. Except for that song on their second album called 'Breaking the Habit". We now know that he wrote it on the piano. Like what LP did with their entire One more Light album.

Dont Forget Static X The Albums from 1999 (Wiscons Death Trip) and 2001 (Machine) and 2003 (Shadow Zone) are full of Popular Nu Metal Songs. Songs Like: Cold, The Only, All in Wait, Bled for Days, I'm with Stupid, Push it. Oh and you missed System of a Down, And the 2003 Metallica Album St.Anger. Was the Perfect Nu Metal Time.

As a 31 year old growing up during the big Nu Metal / Emo boom - it's so crazy to see the times repeat. I heard my parents talk about stuff from their childhood coming back into "fashion" when I was a teen and I scoffed thinking yeah right - but here are are! It's an interesting societal observation
Nu metal resonates with todays generation for many reasons, but a major one not mentioned is the mental health aspect of it imho. For instance, Korn was unique for a variety of reasons, one being that they were always about mental health and processing life. That resonates with everyone. It’s wild how ahead of their time they were and continue to be. Nu metal and it’s derivatives overall have some absolute gems like SOAD, LP, Slipknot, Sevendust, Deftones, etc . Its awesome to see these band’s legacy continue to grow, and I’m excited to see the newer generation of bands like Code Orange, Sleep Token, Tallah flourish etc.
Yep I fully agree with this. As someone who is slightly older gen z but still in college, I feel like a big part of it is that a good amount of gen z feels jaded and disenfranchised with the way the world is moving and they feel powerless to stop it. Wether that’s climate change, wealth inequality and the shrinking middle class, systemic oppression through racism and or sexism, homophobia/transphobia. Among many other factors, I think that combined with the alternative counterculture aesthetic and the energy and pace of the music. It just encapsulates that feeling of wanting to rage a bit and yell and let everything out. I think that’s a pretty big reason why you see a lot of gen z kids resonating with nu-metal

Sevendust is one of the most consistent and down to earth bands around. It's the same lineup as 20 years ago. Them, Deftones, Breaking Benjamin, Disturbed, all deserve their continued popularity.
I like Breaking Benjamin, but I'm iffy on them because of Aurora. In short, Ben took the other band member's performances without permission and used them in basically a remix album. Mind you, they weren't in the band by then. So they couldn't simply talk it directly, bit shady right?
I’m 48 years old. I was around and listening when NuMetal came out. Now, my youngest, who just graduated high school this summer, listens to Deftones. She loves them. I am the proudest father ever.
I think MTV was a major factor in boosting Nu Metal too. That channel was some sort of King/Queen Maker, aiming to popularize personalities thru hype and intrigue.
The women these days are more into getting that social media clout when they most likely have no idea who they are listening to half the time. Hard to tell if this is genuine or just another quick trend for getting popular on social media.
I think part of it is the general trend of a younger generation being interested in the music and styles of 20-30 years ago. I remember the big '60s revival in the 1990s, and in the 1980s there was this 1950s mid century music and style boom, and in the 1970s there was a big interest in 1920s-1940s in terms of style. Like, at 53 the year 2000 feels like a long time ago but it also feels like yesterday. Young people right now are really into the 1990s and early 2000s, even though so much of it doesn't seem that much different than today to me. Plus it's all so much more accessible because everything from that era is on the internet.
here in australia there was a massive mullet revival a few years ago, its almost guaranteed that in 5-10 years there's gonna be a myspace-scene-emo-mallcore revival and the emo hair is gonna be seen as cool
I'm 27 and never stopped liking Nu-Metal, even now. I've always heard about trends resurfacing in 20 year cycles and this is definitely that in motion. I just think it's funny when the younger people I work with at one of my jobs try to school me and I end up showing them bands like Powerman 5000 and Ill Niño 😂
I’ve been into nu metal & emo since 2019. I’m 20, and MCR & Slipknot were a massive help to me as I grieved the loss of a dear friend to brain cancer. Nu metal is a unique genre with simplistic music, which is something that I think modern metal musicians need to try. There is no simplistic hook anymore, or the music is so heavy (ex. Rings of Saturn) that people wouldn’t enjoy it anyway. I myself hope to be a vocalist or drummer in metal at some point, so who knows, maybe I could help bring it back?

OMG me too!! Imma GenX & I was looking for some new (to me) music. Something that was fast paced to get us going in the mornings. During covid, there was NOTHING! So, I stumbled DEEP into KoЯn, Limp Bizkit, NIN, Slipknot, system of a Down & TOOL.💕 Honestly, I've got absolutely _no_ regrets! However, my youngest (18m) sure does! 😂😂 Now, we're just constantly fighting each others music volume levels. My "dark inner boomer" says his generations' music, the new stuff that's big right now? Yeah, it consists of _extremely_ slow rap, for the most part. And, why is it _always_ about the exact same 3 topics? Drugs, guns & bytches. Sung to listeners like, "Look at me. Look what I got & you don't!". It's just all _so_ boring & very unoriginal. Heck, at least our generation(s) had variety in our rap music. Look at Eminem, Snoop, Lil Wayne & 50 cent _all_ those guys sang about loads of _different_ things & in different ways. Not kids today. Nope, they've gotta follow each other, not be original or they'd get dropped by their label. It's killing the whole industry. Music executives killed off pop by demanding artists create ONLY "7-11" music. That's 7 words repeated 11 times.🤢 It's truly thee worst of all music. For me, THAT is why we all seem to be reverting back to the "good ol' days" of REAL music. Back to when music was interesting, fresh & complex. As I see it, you can gimmie screaming about death, violence & hate ANY day, over the new crap. 😂😂😂
96 here. My older cousins were big on not just nu metal but also other sub-genres. My most listened bands on the early 00's were Slipknot and Rammstein :D ..
Korn and system of a down are my all time favorites from this scene very unique sound they had and i havent really heard anything like it and they have some of the best live shows ive ever seen
My second concert I ever went to was in 2004, and that was Slipknot. I literally was introduced to them that year when Vol3 came out. Seeing them live was mind blowing. I didn’t know what was going on, all I knew was that after that show, Slipknot became one of my gateway bands into Metal.
Nu-Metal was my gateway into extreme music as a teenager back in the late 90s/early 2000s and whilst my tastes have massively evolved since then a lot of those old songs/albums and bands still holds a very special place in my heart. It's nice to see it making a comeback, knowing it's doing the same for kids now as it did for me back then, I don't think I'd ever go back to the excessively baggy JNCO/Criminal Damage jeans though.

Im confused. Towards the beginning he stated that he thinks music today is better than 20 years ago. Then later towards the end he says that music today is much worse than they used to be.
This is why a band like Ghost flourishes. They are able to become a spectacle. Their music to me is mid but they're doing what needs to be done to get seen and thus ultimately heard.
Also they have catchy melodies and vocals that aren't abrasive to most listeners. Growling vocals that seem to have become the industry standard in metal isn't for everyone.
I was at Sick New World and loved it. However I hate to see Evanescence constantly ignored in the community. The song writing and vocals are amazing, especially live.
I think because she only did one song that was bordering on that (and she came out addmitting the higher ups made her do that, she never wanted to). Everything else they did was mostly hard rock or symphonic rock or just dark alternative with some slight electronic sounds. I noticed they tend to be remembered more and grouped in with bands like Within Temptation, Nightwish and Lacuna Coil.
I saw Evanescence at Rock im Park (Germany) this year and compared to the other bands their sound mix was not good at all. There was so much going on that I think the sound technician couldn't keep up with what should be on the forefront and what in the background. It was just a huge mess. In comparison Bullet for my Vallentine or Bring me the Horizon were just prefect. BMTH was on the same level of a Linkin Park concert I saw some years before.

They’ve certainly shed some band wagon fans throughout the years. I remember during the snw days people calling them done and writing them off. Then they release Diamond eyes completely different than anything else going on at the time and they’re back to becoming popular. So weird to me that a song like my own summer is catching on tik tok.
P.O.D. NEVER went away neither, they even topped the Rock Charts in 2012 with their album Murdered Love and have dropped two additional albums since thein in 2015 The Awakening and 2018 Circles, P.O.D. is one of the GREATEST EVER.

Turning 40 this year, somehow never stopped listening to nü metal after all these years, just took my daughter this year to see deftones. She’s the same age now when I first saw deftones at 15 🤯 we’ve come full circle and I love it.
My opinion is that Gen Z, being pretty much detached from cultural continuity and imposed standards from prior generations, tend to like things based on actually liking it as opposed to conforming to standards set by someone else. Zoomers will listen to Disturbed, Pink Floyd, Lady Gaga, and Eminem all on the same playlist. Back during the nu-metal heyday, we were still hearing the ravings of boomers who perennially try to lord their alleged cultural superiority over every other generation, and nu-metal was also ushered out by the millennial obsession with being seen as "mature" by distancing themselves with anything that can possibly be perceived as "edgy."
Wasn’t really into nu metal growing up and thought most of it was corny, but after emo faded out and mainstream rock began completely lose any edge it once had, I began missing the hell out of nu metal and found myself listening to songs and artists I had overlooked in the past and enjoying it. I’m surprised but also happy that the genre made a comeback
It's also probably because our parents who experienced music in the 90s and Y2K are influencing our tastes in music as well. I can thank my Dad for getting me into Deftones and pretty much all kinds of metal music from that era.
Yup. It's like how many Baby Boomers and older Gen-Xers had their kids listen to 60s-80s rock, influencing their music tastes and thus helping "classic" rock have staying power. While my sisters and I eventually developed our own unique music tastes starting in about middle school or so, that shared "classic rock foundation" will always be there.
It's wild to see nu-metal making a comeback like it is. I'm glad it's bringing back the more popular bands, but I'd like to see some deep cuts come back too. Give me Simon Says, Fingertight, and From Zero reunion shows that I wanted in high school.
I still still listen to From Zero all the time! I looked up the lead singer to see if he was doing any other projects, and dude was on LinkedIn as like an I.T. guy or something. Would love to see him (and all of From Zero) come back.
Nu Metal was my introduction to the harder genres and will always be my favorite thing to listen to. KoЯn specifically will always be my favorite. So I'm glad more people are getting into the genre and appreciating the music!
This is all stuff I loved as a teen. It's nostalgic now. I am so upset that I just learned and missed the sick new world tour. System of a down was my shit number one band I have always wanted to see... Still have all their CDs but haven't followed it in so long so didn't know about it.
I started getting into Nu-metal after I found Grunge in 2017. Linkin Park, Slipknot, and Incubus were early discoveries and personal favorites. I started listening to POD in 2021, and became a Korn fan just this year. This type of music defined pandemic for me
I absolutely agree about the nu metal bands being like video game characters, the visual complements the music they had character and personality and that goes a long way along with their accessibility nothing wrong with technical and complex music but when it comes to being entertained sometimes you want to take it easy

I saw korn last year and being almost forty, I absolutely loved seeing all these kids dressed up liked I used to twenty years ago. I just love that so many women are able to show how much they love this music nowadays. Might just have been for me but I had a hard time sometimes because it was mostly guys who liked the genre. Still remember when I first saw korn and both me and my brother were in love. Mum didn't have any idea what had just been born :D
For me, it’s because I am too young to have really been around during it’s golden era so rediscovering these bands is like when I discovered early 90s death metal 15 years ago. Also, Slipknot’s Iowa is basically as brutal as most modern deathcore bands In an era of decreasing reliance on purchased music, live shows are the lifeblood of music and nu metal has never shied away from a good show.

Bizkit's 3DB is their best album. Lot of people get into the band via Break Stuff and Rolling but then they discover 3DB and get hooked. And don't forget the popularity of reaction videos and their role in introducing the genre to younger audiences.
This. A lot of people when they think of Limp Bizkit they just think of stuff such as "Nookie" or "Rollin'", but they are actually much more than that. I was one of those, now I have "3DB" and "The Unquestionable Truth" as my favorite records lol.
As someone getting close to 60, I will say I am glad NuMetal is making a comeback. I was there for the hair-metal of the 80's. Loved that sex-drugs-rocknroll vibe. The bands looked ridiculous and lived larger than life. IT was a lifestyle, and it was in-your-face. I was busy raising my own kids when grunge took over everything, so thankfully, I was distracted during that mess. Then numetal came along and it was great. It reminded me of the hair days, just done differently. The bands had a different look, and a different sound, but they still had that in-your-face attitude. And the music was good, and it was fun. Took my son to his first Korn show. Took both my kids for their first Kid Rock show. My daughter turned me on to Papa Roach. (who still kill it live even though I don't care for their last couple albums) I have to agree. There are some good metal bands now, but other than a handful, most don't stand out. They don't do anything to stand out. A lot don't seem to stand for anything.
Im 17, i got into rock through punk rock bc my mom recomended the Offspring to me (but I loved rock ever since I was a lil kid) I just happened to get into Nu-metal through that at the same time it became trendy. kinda crazy to see!
Nu-Metal has grown up. It´s now establishing it´s place in the music universe with a specific time spot, well praised bands and people will discover nu-metal and have a "Deftones Phase" just like all kids had with Nirvana.
I never thought I’d see the day where Nu Metal bands were considered to have “good songwriting”. I fucking loved all these bands in high school but nobody really thought about the quality of their songwriting, we were just having a good time. It blows my mind just how much of this hyperbolic music actually holds up, and I’m glad!
It wasn't Meshuggah kind of songwriting. But it was catchy and groovy as fuck. Some of the bands were of course awful because of some shtick or the overall boringness, but some songs, even by mediocre bands still hold up today (Whole and Payback by Flaw still give me goosebumps)
It was so over the top even back then but like grunge maybe, it’s held up extremely well. I just catch myself randomly humming shit from System or Disturbed etc.
You’ve also gotta point out too that after 2003 the influence of nu metal carried on through bands like Breaking Benjamin, Red, Chevelle, Skillet, all of the Linkin Park/Evanescence influenced hard rock/post-grunge bands. They might not be textbook Nu metal per se, but their roots in the genre definitely carried what was left of the sound in the active rock field for the past 15 years, as well as all the Core bands that started experimenting with it
I still remember Nu Metal being played on MTV and Fuse in 2004 - 2008. But when 2009 came around, it was no longer there. I mean it's a blessing to have the internet now.
@@amx1820Yup! KoRn came to my country the Philippines back in 2011! The problem is the venue sucked and wasn't mosh pit friendly (a closed indoor sports arena with very anal security)! Filipino audiences have this funny quirk that the people in the front section are by-and-large lame asses who complain when you try to start a mosh pit, and those on the middle and back sections are the rowdy ones who go nuts and mosh like lunatics! And that is why I do NOT like buying front section tickets to these shows! Heck, Chino of the Deftones actually NOTICED IT, so during the encore of their 2011 show in Manila he walked on the security barrier to interact with the crowds at the middle and back (before he did that, he said "The People in the back need some love!")

As a 44 year old who lived through the birth and death of Nu Metal it’s like some strange parody watching all these young people getting into it because they’re trying to copy the style but it’s not quite right for the genre (more goth looking people than nu mental.) Plus their attitudes don’t seem to match the music. We loved it at the time because we were a pissed off lost generation. These people just look lost and looking for recognition on the internet. Back in the day we didn’t give a shit about impressing people. That was the whole point of the movement.
A lot of people would normally be upset that a young generation gets interested in music that we grew up with (Because you know, for them everyone is a poser). For me, it's fascinating and beautiful. Seeing a young boy/girl who was born when I was in high school listen to Linkin Park, Korn, Limp Bizkit or Deftones unironically and going to concerts and such, fills me with joy. It's like "Oh, they are enjoying what made me happy when I was a teenager!" Don't let social media fool you, there's a lot of kids from this new generation actually being pretty cool, and I totally support them 🤟
Korn has been my most beloved band since 94. I love that young people are discovering them, and I hope they find the same catharsis and head-banging fun I've enjoyed all these years.
As a 35 year old, what I most appreciated about Nu-Metal back in the day (and still do now) was the raw emotionality of it all, and the fact that the vocalists weren't screaming about wounded soldiers, dragons or ancient gods, but about feeling unloved, hated, alone, hurt and angry. This was me. As a bassist, what I most appreciated about Nu-Metal was that the bass wasn't there to just pad the guitars, but was laying down some sick groove, and often was a leading instrument.
I have heard Linkin Park on my local Alt rock, pop rock, pop, and classic rock stations lol. It's crazy to me that bands I used to listen to like Nirvana and Linkin Park are now considered "classic" rock to some.
As an older gen z who listened to nu metal on my way to school in elementary school, I feel like most of us are still listening to 2000-2015 music. It’s almost like all of the metal sub genres kind of plummeted around that time. I feel like from the outside we just look nostalgic from our school years when in reality the newer music just isn’t made for us.
As a Zoomer Nu metal fan, I'm a hardcover Maggot and other bands like system of a down, Deftones, and recently Korn are also favorites. I'm glad this sound and these bands made the comeback they deserve, because they were always good. I hope metal can make a comeback in terms of popularity to the level it had in the 2000's. I feel like it's been in a bad place since this scene died.

Ever since I was like 2 feet tall my dad has listened to metal and rock and I’ve picked that up and he has been listening to it for at least 35 years (note I am 13 and he is 41)
It’s largely the same reason people started getting back into 80s and 90s music in general over the past 20 years: the songs are catchy, energetic, and above all fun. A lot of bands seem to forget you’re allowed to have fun playing music. Some performers are self serious to the point of self parody.
I think it also comes down to kids these days trying to see what came out before they were born, I did the same when I first got into slipknot in 99. I went back and checked out all the bands that influenced those current bands, which got me into slayer and maiden
I’m 45 and my son is 14. We went to Sick New World last year and he was more excited than I was to be there, and I was pretty damn stoked myself! He was in the pits holding his own during Deftones and Korn and I had guys coming up to me asking “yo is that your kid?! He was kicking ass out there! He’s a good kid!”
Nu metal has a special place in my heart...they got me into the heavier stuff! Chimaira and Slipknot were the ones that got me into exploring the heavier stuff to finally get to death metal
I am 34, listening to nu-metal since I’m 11. As English is not my native language, I didn’t really know what it was all about, I loved the heavy bursts of music, the fucks and the album arts. The music video “boiler” from limp bizkit got me hooked and is still one of my favourite song ever. The intro give me goosebumps every play. As I grew older I discovered more genres of metal and music in general but nu-metal was always in my life, and it always will be!
I'm 57, the same age as most guys who were/are Nu Metal. We're all GenX. I think my favorite part was picking up my daughter from some event, I don't remember what, and her friends pile into the minivan and hear either Korn or Deftones and are all "OMG! This is the best! You have the coolest dad!" I wear that moment with pride, I see it as the pinnacle of my dad days. Kids are in college now, this was pre-pandemic.
My 14 year old daughter is right there with it. Particularly Deftones. Took her to Deftones, Korn twice, Tool twice, among others. Warms my cold, dead heart 🖤
I’m honestly happy nu-metal is becoming popular again. I’ve been a fan for 15 years. It seems like so many more opportunities to see shows lately. I will say I miss the days where crowds were much smaller. I was able to see slipknot front row at one point!
I'm almost afraid to believe that Nu-Metal is getting popular again. I think I'll give it another year and see, I would be so happy for Nu-Metal to become mainstream again. It got dunked on for so long and I never understood why, the music was so GOOOD

ur comment about corny limp bizkit is 10000% accurate to chocolate starfish. hands down no question. i beg you to go back and relisten to significant other front to back. to me, its the epitome of what an album should be. from an era where albums told a story. you can see and feel his hurt from losing his gf, the stages of grief through my way, nookie, rearranged and break stuff. intertwining a b plot of how his step forward in life causes the loss of other relationships and cultivates new toxic ones with im broke. all encompassed with the songs that reflect his distraction from it all, the party tracks like n2 gether now and 9 teen 90 9.

The music just got old enough that the young kids that listen to it now are the equivalent of that the kid who listened to the classic rock bands when you were young are the, more precisely classic metal, music that would of been shunned by the masses then but seen a giant resurgence decades later due to the bands they inspired making music in genres catered to the younger generation.
Both of my high schoolers and their friends listen to 90s-early 2000s rock almost exclusively. I’m proud, but also saddened that rock has fallen so far that teens need to go back 20 yrs for good rock music.

i remember my friend once played Snuff on his car and as soon a the drums kicked in after the second chorus i immediately knew it was Joey on the drums. He has that signature sound and style that is pretty rare although there's other amazing drummer out there. Btw i never heard Snuff before that and i thought its a new song so..

This is so validating to me because I was THAT tween who was into Nu Metal in the late 90s and early 00s. It's good to see people stop bashing it and start appreciating the impact it made on metal. (Korn was my first concert and I used to be hesitant to say it because people WOULD judge.) Even tough it could be corny, the riffs still live in my head 20 years later.
Korn/Rob Zombie The Rock is Dead was my first rock concert. I am lucky to live in a place where all us medal kids liked Nu Medal back then and still do. The hate for Nu Metal is through socal media.

The band Chicago was my first concert, back in 1988. I'm not ashamed of it, nor am I ashamed that I like a lot of music out of the Nu Metal era. I'm still jamming on Korn, Slipknot, Limp Bizkit and the like, to this day. I don't care what anyone thinks.

I couldn't comprehend why pop culture hated it in the past when obviously bands were making money on tour especially being signed to a professional metal music contract. Maybe Satan himself who knows? Jealousy for screaming and vocal frying goes far I guess.

I'm an 80's kid and I'll admit that grunge and nu-metal are basically shit. Just because I was around the crap in my teens doesn't mean it's decent music. Hell, Agalloch wasn't even a band until I was married with kids and it's better than 99.9% of nu-metal.
i'm a 16 year old girl who got into metal a few years ago (slipknot, rammstein, bloodywood to name a few). for me i got into it because my parents used to listen to some of it when i was younger, and now i have a sense of nostalgia tied to the music.
i've always liked guitar riffs and heavy drums but i always protested being a metal fan as a kid because it was too violent for a young girl, but i'm so glad i rediscovered the genre with this new explosion of popularity.
metal just lets you express emotion like no other genre does, and the community is like a big family. i love it here
My 16 year old daughter is exactly the same. She grew up with me & her Dad playing all kinds of music but mostly rock, metal & nu-metal. Now she almost exclusively listens to nu-metal & hates most modern music, especially new hip hop.

i'm in my 30s and i got into metal through those same bands as a 12 yr old girl. recently i was wearing a band shirt in public and a group of teenage girls approached me because they noticed and wanted to talk to me about the band. i actually found it pretty funny and depressing in some ways because they opened with "wow, i didn't know anyone else was into such an obscure band...." (it was NOT an obscure band, lol) and then when we had talked for a while i found out they werent even born the first time i went to a show. it is awesome that young people are discovering such good music but overall depressing that there hasnt been comparable music coming out for decades.
also i think like in the video and form my RL experience its great that teen girls feel like they can get into metal now, being a metal fan and a teenage girl in the early 2000s was not fun. metal culture was a lot shittier towards women back then and it sometimes made you feel like an outcast in a genre that was supposed to be "for" outcasts
What I've always found interesting is that we spend our middle school and early high school years trying to distance ourselves as much as possible from the music our parents listened to. But then we inevitably hit a certain age and I think nostalgia takes over and what was once so 'uncool' becomes cool again.
I'm 20 as of 12 am today, and most everything my parents played was metal and rock for all of my life, I'm pretty sure the similarities in music is half the reason they ever got together, either way it's interesting to see how the music ive been listening to my whole life gets picked up so quickly considering 5 or 6 years ago i would get odd looks for talking about the music I enjoyed

Nu Metal was my gateway into metal and still holds a special place in my heart to this day. My four favorites growing up were Deftones, Slipknot, Limp Bizkit and System of a Down. Other bands I enjoyed were Nonpoint, Project 86, Powerman 5000, Static-X, POD, Linkin Park, Crazy Town, Jerk and These 5 Down.

I think another huge part of it was that when I put on a Korn CD or System of a Down CD as a kid, you could immediately tell by their style what band it was. A lot of nu-metal bands have their own distinct and identifiable sound, that most new metal bands don't have. The over production, breakdowns, and vocals are all almost identical to like 5 other bands.
As a Deftones fan, it's crazy to see them catalogued as a nu metal band again, but it's also crazy to see them gain popularity from newer generations. It certainly makes me happy to know people are into such a great band!
Nu Metal, like Grunge is one of those genre terms that are used so loosely that it barely has meaning. Basically if you were a rock band that got famous in those eras you're grouped in with the terms. Outside of the dropped tuning I don't think of half of the bands as really doing the same type of music.

Grunge crashed and burned though, Nu Metal lasted for decades.
Deftones were one of the og greats of the genre. White Pony is one of the best albums to come out of that era. I still listen to it. Digital Bath is a masterpiece of a song.

I think a big problem of todays Rock/Metal scene is that people are "afraid" of being Rockstars. It feels like a lot of them are afraid of being called "sellouts" or a lot of them are afraid of what other people think about them in general. Take a look at the biggest "persons" or "charecters" in the Rock and Metal scene right now. Oli Sykes, MGK, Ronnie Radke. What do this 3 persons have in common? That kind of business school mindset is often the antithesis of this generation's motivation, especially among the nerds who are making a lot of the contemporary rock/metal today (imo)

I think people now have an affinity of Nu-Metal just because of the fact that heavy-hitters like KoRn, Linkin Park, Deftones, etc. have hit 20+ years in the game now. It's considered to be "Dad Rock" so to speak for a Millennial generation. Let's not forget that during the late '90s and early '00s that the Hard Rock / Post Grunge era was the staple during the time. Nu-Metal was still niche. Older people and Gen Z are reviving it because their parents listened to it.
90's metal and alternative was just so well balanced... Nu metal was the popular gateway that also led people to rewind and discover older bands like Pantera, Rage against machine, Slayer, Metallica, Alice in chains, etc... hooks, heavy riffs, and great songwriting made that era special.
They played RATM and Alice in Chains on the radio... like since I was a kid in the 90s...

Nu Metal didn’t take itself seriously. It embraced being weird/different. And bottom line … it was FUN.
There was a huge swath of time after Nu Metal where everyone was trying to be Uber serious and forgot the FUN aspect. You don’t need the musical chops of Tool (love them too). You don’t need super deep lyricism. Just write a fun song that people can jam to or vibe to. I’m glad that’s coming back around.
to be honest, i know so many tracks who aren’t funny or just for jam / having fun. I recommend to listen to some Korn or Slipknot songs (just as 2 very popular examples). Jonathan Davis made a song about the abuse he suffered from his dad when he was a kid, others go on mental illness or are completely political critical. Nu Metal was far from „fun“, it showed pretty hard the issues of my Generation (Xennial - born 1981). Sure, we had some „Party-Music“, but that’s tiny if you compare it to the whole genre.

As a 41 year-old who went to the very first Family Values Tour show (in Rochester, NY), saw Coal Chamber live when Rayna was still in the band, and now have endless playlists with Deftones and Slipknot in them, I approve this resurgence 1000%!😂

41 too, saw Korn in Paris in 96, Sepultura in 95 for the ROOTS tour which was actually one of the 1st Nu Metal albums (produced by Ross Robinson with a feat. from Jon Davis) was there in 99 when Slipknot started and became a fan instantly. No need to over-analyze this: it’s cyclical, what was trendy 20 years ago comes back, that was predictable. Like when we were teenagers there were many of our peers into stuffs from the 70´s I’m sure you had a few friends into THE DOORS or Jimi Hendrix etc. Now NO ONE listens to them.

Been a Nu Metal fan since the beginning. Great song writing, good bass lines, and drum lines. Lot of different lyrical styles between singing, screaming, rapping, wispering, and growling. It not the same cookie cutter songs done by everyone like must other genre of music.
And a lot of the big name Nu-Metal bands are all quite distinct from each other! Even casual fans can tell them apart by their looks, vocals, guitars, and drums!
Been of Deftones fan since 2000 and saw them multiple times live back in the day. I’m glad a new generation picks up this timeless band. But when it comes to girls loving Deftones, it has always been that way. Deftones always attracted a diverse crowd.

I saw Korn in 2000 to 2006 and 2012 amazing each time. But the 2002 concert I have to admit I didn't love as much because I thought I might die. Oh my God we were at the front of the stage when they came on and they started playing here to stay and it was just insanity. I finally fucked my way to the edge of the crowd and I said I will not go back in there again. The rest of the show was amazing Disturbed trust company and RA where are the opening acts

Deftones was the soundtrack to many of my friends and I's addictions and I'm sure for many more people. The romantic ethereal highs and the harrowing grimy lows just fit that lifestyle so well. It's also just amazing music. All of Chino the singers bands are worth a listen. Especially crosses.

Deftones definitely fit into the snobby hipster elitist mentality for people that need validation from others. Like “I only listen to genuis level bands and artists” attitude. Other than Deftones the appeal of Nu Metal now and then is that they’re just fans themselves. They were not pretentious, the lyrics are straight forward and easy to identify with instead of the read between the lines type thing. All different walks of life were welcome and the musical influences on the bands themselves reflected that

Honestly...LP's strength was the combination of Chester and Shinoda. Like the Deftones, they had different backgrounds with different musical styles and figured out how to meld them into something that appeals to everyone.
the dynamic of chester and shinoda is very similar to the dynamic of syn/the rev to zacky/m shadows. it might sound weird but hear me out. syn and the rev came from backgrounds in jazz, classical and prog rock primarily whereas zacky and shads had a background of punk, hardcore and metal primarily. it's more subtle than the fusion that lp did but there all the same. in a7x songs you see power chords, d beats, octaves and punk shouting followed up by technical grooves on the drums you'd hear on like a king crimson track and an extremely flashy solo that is actually really complicated in terms of musicality.

Most other bands weren’t. But they saw it as something bad somehow. I feel like the main reason was the reaction of critics that hurt Mike’s feelings back when Meteora came out. Anyways, they are still one of my favorite bands and oh I wish there were a couple more albums like the first two… New music that came out this year proved once again that that’s what many fans love them for and that’s where their talent laid.
LP didn't combine Mike's and Chester's ability. Their writing style was like playing a game of 'Hot Potato". It mostly starts with Mike Shinoda and then he passes it to maybe Brad(guitarist) or Rob(drummer) because Mike can play guitars too. and then Pheonix uses his bass guitar on the demo. Then there is Joe Hahn with his samples and beats. And finally; Mike and Chester or sometimes Brad sit together to write lyrics. And they did re-write them hundreds of time because they sang over the music track for their entire first two album. Except for that song on their second album called 'Breaking the Habit". We now know that he wrote it on the piano. Like what LP did with their entire One more Light album.
This revival seems to make it hurt all the more that Chester isn't around to enjoy it with us.
If chester is around they will not be doing nu metal songs anyway. Of all nu-metal bands LP is the only band that sells out.

Nu metal resonates with todays generation for many reasons, but a major one not mentioned is the mental health aspect of it imho. For instance, Korn was unique for a variety of reasons, one being that they were always about mental health and processing life. That resonates with everyone. It’s wild how ahead of their time they were and continue to be. Nu metal and it’s derivatives overall have some absolute gems like SOAD, LP, Slipknot, Sevendust, Deftones, etc . Its awesome to see these band’s legacy continue to grow, and I’m excited to see the newer generation of bands like Code Orange, Sleep Token, Tallah flourish etc.

Yep I fully agree with this. As someone who is slightly older gen z but still in college, I feel like a big part of it is that a good amount of gen z feels jaded and disenfranchised with the way the world is moving and they feel powerless to stop it. Wether that’s climate change, wealth inequality and the shrinking middle class, systemic oppression through racism and or sexism, homophobia/transphobia. Among many other factors, I think that combined with the alternative counterculture aesthetic and the energy and pace of the music. It just encapsulates that feeling of wanting to rage a bit and yell and let everything out. I think that’s a pretty big reason why you see a lot of gen z kids resonating with nu-metal

Sevendust is one of the most consistent and down to earth bands around. It's the same lineup as 20 years ago. Them, Deftones, Breaking Benjamin, Disturbed, all deserve their continued popularity.

I think part of it is the general trend of a younger generation being interested in the music and styles of 20-30 years ago. I remember the big '60s revival in the 1990s, and in the 1980s there was this 1950s mid century music and style boom, and in the 1970s there was a big interest in 1920s-1940s in terms of style. Like, at 53 the year 2000 feels like a long time ago but it also feels like yesterday. Young people right now are really into the 1990s and early 2000s, even though so much of it doesn't seem that much different than today to me. Plus it's all so much more accessible because everything from that era is on the internet.

here in australia there was a massive mullet revival a few years ago, its almost guaranteed that in 5-10 years there's gonna be a myspace-scene-emo-mallcore revival and the emo hair is gonna be seen as cool
I'm 27 and never stopped liking Nu-Metal, even now. I've always heard about trends resurfacing in 20 year cycles and this is definitely that in motion. I just think it's funny when the younger people I work with at one of my jobs try to school me and I end up showing them bands like Powerman 5000 and Ill Niño 😂

I’ve been into nu metal & emo since 2019. I’m 20, and MCR & Slipknot were a massive help to me as I grieved the loss of a dear friend to brain cancer.
Nu metal is a unique genre with simplistic music, which is something that I think modern metal musicians need to try. There is no simplistic hook anymore, or the music is so heavy (ex. Rings of Saturn) that people wouldn’t enjoy it anyway. I myself hope to be a vocalist or drummer in metal at some point, so who knows, maybe I could help bring it back?

So, I stumbled DEEP into KoЯn, Limp Bizkit, NIN, Slipknot, system of a Down & TOOL.💕 Honestly, I've got absolutely _no_ regrets! However, my youngest (18m) sure does! 😂😂 Now, we're just constantly fighting each others music volume levels.
My "dark inner boomer" says his generations' music, the new stuff that's big right now? Yeah, it consists of _extremely_ slow rap, for the most part. And, why is it _always_ about the exact same 3 topics? Drugs, guns & bytches. Sung to listeners like, "Look at me. Look what I got & you don't!". It's just all _so_ boring & very unoriginal. Heck, at least our generation(s) had variety in our rap music. Look at Eminem, Snoop, Lil Wayne & 50 cent _all_ those guys sang about loads of _different_ things & in different ways. Not kids today. Nope, they've gotta follow each other, not be original or they'd get dropped by their label. It's killing the whole industry. Music executives killed off pop by demanding artists create ONLY "7-11" music. That's 7 words repeated 11 times.🤢 It's truly thee worst of all music. For me, THAT is why we all seem to be reverting back to the "good ol' days" of REAL music. Back to when music was interesting, fresh & complex. My second concert I ever went to was in 2004, and that was Slipknot. I literally was introduced to them that year when Vol3 came out. Seeing them live was mind blowing. I didn’t know what was going on, all I knew was that after that show, Slipknot became one of my gateway bands into Metal.

Nu-Metal was my gateway into extreme music as a teenager back in the late 90s/early 2000s and whilst my tastes have massively evolved since then a lot of those old songs/albums and bands still holds a very special place in my heart. It's nice to see it making a comeback, knowing it's doing the same for kids now as it did for me back then, I don't think I'd ever go back to the excessively baggy JNCO/Criminal Damage jeans though.

Im confused. Towards the beginning he stated that he thinks music today is better than 20 years ago. Then later towards the end he says that music today is much worse than they used to be.
This is why a band like Ghost flourishes. They are able to become a spectacle. Their music to me is mid but they're doing what needs to be done to get seen and thus ultimately heard.
Also they have catchy melodies and vocals that aren't abrasive to most listeners. Growling vocals that seem to have become the industry standard in metal isn't for everyone.

I was at Sick New World and loved it. However I hate to see Evanescence constantly ignored in the community. The song writing and vocals are amazing, especially live.
I think because she only did one song that was bordering on that (and she came out addmitting the higher ups made her do that, she never wanted to).
Everything else they did was mostly hard rock or symphonic rock or just dark alternative with some slight electronic sounds. I noticed they tend to be remembered more and grouped in with bands like Within Temptation, Nightwish and Lacuna Coil.
I saw Evanescence at Rock im Park (Germany) this year and compared to the other bands their sound mix was not good at all. There was so much going on that I think the sound technician couldn't keep up with what should be on the forefront and what in the background. It was just a huge mess. In comparison Bullet for my Vallentine or Bring me the Horizon were just prefect. BMTH was on the same level of a Linkin Park concert I saw some years before.

Deftones NEVER went away. They've been putting out consistently excellent records the whole time.
They’ve certainly shed some band wagon fans throughout the years. I remember during the snw days people calling them done and writing them off. Then they release Diamond eyes completely different than anything else going on at the time and they’re back to becoming popular. So weird to me that a song like my own summer is catching on tik tok.

P.O.D. NEVER went away neither, they even topped the Rock Charts in 2012 with their album Murdered Love and have dropped two additional albums since thein in 2015 The Awakening and 2018 Circles, P.O.D. is one of the GREATEST EVER.

Turning 40 this year, somehow never stopped listening to nü metal after all these years, just took my daughter this year to see deftones. She’s the same age now when I first saw deftones at 15 🤯 we’ve come full circle and I love it.
My opinion is that Gen Z, being pretty much detached from cultural continuity and imposed standards from prior generations, tend to like things based on actually liking it as opposed to conforming to standards set by someone else. Zoomers will listen to Disturbed, Pink Floyd, Lady Gaga, and Eminem all on the same playlist. Back during the nu-metal heyday, we were still hearing the ravings of boomers who perennially try to lord their alleged cultural superiority over every other generation, and nu-metal was also ushered out by the millennial obsession with being seen as "mature" by distancing themselves with anything that can possibly be perceived as "edgy."
Wasn’t really into nu metal growing up and thought most of it was corny, but after emo faded out and mainstream rock began completely lose any edge it once had, I began missing the hell out of nu metal and found myself listening to songs and artists I had overlooked in the past and enjoying it. I’m surprised but also happy that the genre made a comeback

It's also probably because our parents who experienced music in the 90s and Y2K are influencing our tastes in music as well. I can thank my Dad for getting me into Deftones and pretty much all kinds of metal music from that era.
Yup. It's like how many Baby Boomers and older Gen-Xers had their kids listen to 60s-80s rock, influencing their music tastes and thus helping "classic" rock have staying power. While my sisters and I eventually developed our own unique music tastes starting in about middle school or so, that shared "classic rock foundation" will always be there.

Nu Metal was my introduction to the harder genres and will always be my favorite thing to listen to. KoЯn specifically will always be my favorite. So I'm glad more people are getting into the genre and appreciating the music!

This is all stuff I loved as a teen. It's nostalgic now. I am so upset that I just learned and missed the sick new world tour. System of a down was my shit number one band I have always wanted to see... Still have all their CDs but haven't followed it in so long so didn't know about it.

I started getting into Nu-metal after I found Grunge in 2017. Linkin Park, Slipknot, and Incubus were early discoveries and personal favorites. I started listening to POD in 2021, and became a Korn fan just this year. This type of music defined pandemic for me

I absolutely agree about the nu metal bands being like video game characters, the visual complements the music they had character and personality and that goes a long way along with their accessibility nothing wrong with technical and complex music but when it comes to being entertained sometimes you want to take it easy
Man, your comment about guitarists making song for other guitarists is spot on, I know because I'm a guitarist, I'm so used to metal that I forget people getting into metal need more accesible songs to start their transformation.
I saw korn last year and being almost forty, I absolutely loved seeing all these kids dressed up liked I used to twenty years ago. I just love that so many women are able to show how much they love this music nowadays. Might just have been for me but I had a hard time sometimes because it was mostly guys who liked the genre. Still remember when I first saw korn and both me and my brother were in love. Mum didn't have any idea what had just been born :D
For me, it’s because I am too young to have really been around during it’s golden era so rediscovering these bands is like when I discovered early 90s death metal 15 years ago.
Also, Slipknot’s Iowa is basically as brutal as most modern deathcore bands

Iowa was a really good album but that is when Slipknot pivoted away from Nu Metal as heard on their self titled. Enjoy the nostalgic rabbit hole of Nu Metal you missed! Sicksense is my modern Nu Metal fix lately. As always #DrinkWisconsinably

Grew up in the grunge era, always been a metalhead. Liked the heavier stuff but also nu-metal. All is awesome🤘🏼
Bizkit's 3DB is their best album. Lot of people get into the band via Break Stuff and Rolling but then they discover 3DB and get hooked. And don't forget the popularity of reaction videos and their role in introducing the genre to younger audiences.
This. A lot of people when they think of Limp Bizkit they just think of stuff such as "Nookie" or "Rollin'", but they are actually much more than that. I was one of those, now I have "3DB" and "The Unquestionable Truth" as my favorite records lol.

As someone getting close to 60, I will say I am glad NuMetal is making a comeback.
I was there for the hair-metal of the 80's. Loved that sex-drugs-rocknroll vibe. The bands looked ridiculous and lived larger than life. IT was a lifestyle, and it was in-your-face.
I was busy raising my own kids when grunge took over everything, so thankfully, I was distracted during that mess. Then numetal came along and it was great. It reminded me of the hair days, just done differently. The bands had a different look, and a different sound, but they still had that in-your-face attitude. And the music was good, and it was fun. Took my son to his first Korn show. Took both my kids for their first Kid Rock show. My daughter turned me on to Papa Roach. (who still kill it live even though I don't care for their last couple albums)
I have to agree. There are some good metal bands now, but other than a handful, most don't stand out. They don't do anything to stand out. A lot don't seem to stand for anything.

Nu-Metal has grown up. It´s now establishing it´s place in the music universe with a specific time spot, well praised bands and people will discover nu-metal and have a "Deftones Phase" just like all kids had with Nirvana.
Wes Borlands guitar work is actually amazing. Hes like a mix between alex jones of tool and the edge from u2. Very underrated.

I never thought I’d see the day where Nu Metal bands were considered to have “good songwriting”. I fucking loved all these bands in high school but nobody really thought about the quality of their songwriting, we were just having a good time.
It blows my mind just how much of this hyperbolic music actually holds up, and I’m glad!
It wasn't Meshuggah kind of songwriting. But it was catchy and groovy as fuck. Some of the bands were of course awful because of some shtick or the overall boringness, but some songs, even by mediocre bands still hold up today (Whole and Payback by Flaw still give me goosebumps)
It was so over the top even back then but like grunge maybe, it’s held up extremely well. I just catch myself randomly humming shit from System or Disturbed etc.
You’ve also gotta point out too that after 2003 the influence of nu metal carried on through bands like Breaking Benjamin, Red, Chevelle, Skillet, all of the Linkin Park/Evanescence influenced hard rock/post-grunge bands. They might not be textbook Nu metal per se, but their roots in the genre definitely carried what was left of the sound in the active rock field for the past 15 years, as well as all the Core bands that started experimenting with it
I still remember Nu Metal being played on MTV and Fuse in 2004 - 2008. But when 2009 came around, it was no longer there. I mean it's a blessing to have the internet now.
I am really hoping that Korn or LimpBizkit will tour India man!! I feel like American NuMetal bands have NO IDEA how much they are loved in India.

@@amx1820Yup! KoRn came to my country the Philippines back in 2011! The problem is the venue sucked and wasn't mosh pit friendly (a closed indoor sports arena with very anal security)!
Filipino audiences have this funny quirk that the people in the front section are by-and-large lame asses who complain when you try to start a mosh pit, and those on the middle and back sections are the rowdy ones who go nuts and mosh like lunatics! And that is why I do NOT like buying front section tickets to these shows!
Heck, Chino of the Deftones actually NOTICED IT, so during the encore of their 2011 show in Manila he walked on the security barrier to interact with the crowds at the middle and back (before he did that, he said "The People in the back need some love!")
I like to imagine Finn has an entire back catalogue of “Nu Metal or 2000s Pop Punk” videos for whenever he’s not feeling it that week or needs a break.
As a 44 year old who lived through the birth and death of Nu Metal it’s like some strange parody watching all these young people getting into it because they’re trying to copy the style but it’s not quite right for the genre (more goth looking people than nu mental.) Plus their attitudes don’t seem to match the music. We loved it at the time because we were a pissed off lost generation. These people just look lost and looking for recognition on the internet. Back in the day we didn’t give a shit about impressing people. That was the whole point of the movement.
A lot of people would normally be upset that a young generation gets interested in music that we grew up with (Because you know, for them everyone is a poser). For me, it's fascinating and beautiful. Seeing a young boy/girl who was born when I was in high school listen to Linkin Park, Korn, Limp Bizkit or Deftones unironically and going to concerts and such, fills me with joy. It's like "Oh, they are enjoying what made me happy when I was a teenager!"
Don't let social media fool you, there's a lot of kids from this new generation actually being pretty cool, and I totally support them 🤟
Korn has been my most beloved band since 94. I love that young people are discovering them, and I hope they find the same catharsis and head-banging fun I've enjoyed all these years.
As a 35 year old, what I most appreciated about Nu-Metal back in the day (and still do now) was the raw emotionality of it all, and the fact that the vocalists weren't screaming about wounded soldiers, dragons or ancient gods, but about feeling unloved, hated, alone, hurt and angry. This was me.
As a bassist, what I most appreciated about Nu-Metal was that the bass wasn't there to just pad the guitars, but was laying down some sick groove, and often was a leading instrument.
I have heard Linkin Park on my local Alt rock, pop rock, pop, and classic rock stations lol. It's crazy to me that bands I used to listen to like Nirvana and Linkin Park are now considered "classic" rock to some.
As an older gen z who listened to nu metal on my way to school in elementary school, I feel like most of us are still listening to 2000-2015 music. It’s almost like all of the metal sub genres kind of plummeted around that time. I feel like from the outside we just look nostalgic from our school years when in reality the newer music just isn’t made for us.
Korn and Deftones got me through being a teenager. Glad it’s doing it for them too. It’s timeless stuff😊
As a Zoomer Nu metal fan, I'm a hardcover Maggot and other bands like system of a down, Deftones, and recently Korn are also favorites. I'm glad this sound and these bands made the comeback they deserve, because they were always good. I hope metal can make a comeback in terms of popularity to the level it had in the 2000's. I feel like it's been in a bad place since this scene died.

Ever since I was like 2 feet tall my dad has listened to metal and rock and I’ve picked that up and he has been listening to it for at least 35 years (note I am 13 and he is 41)
It’s largely the same reason people started getting back into 80s and 90s music in general over the past 20 years: the songs are catchy, energetic, and above all fun. A lot of bands seem to forget you’re allowed to have fun playing music. Some performers are self serious to the point of self parody.
I think it also comes down to kids these days trying to see what came out before they were born, I did the same when I first got into slipknot in 99. I went back and checked out all the bands that influenced those current bands, which got me into slayer and maiden
I’m 45 and my son is 14. We went to Sick New World last year and he was more excited than I was to be there, and I was pretty damn stoked myself!
He was in the pits holding his own during Deftones and Korn and I had guys coming up to me asking “yo is that your kid?! He was kicking ass out there! He’s a good kid!”
Nu metal has a special place in my heart...they got me into the heavier stuff! Chimaira and Slipknot were the ones that got me into exploring the heavier stuff to finally get to death metal
I am 34, listening to nu-metal since I’m 11.
As English is not my native language, I didn’t really know what it was all about, I loved the heavy bursts of music, the fucks and the album arts. The music video “boiler” from limp bizkit got me hooked and is still one of my favourite song ever. The intro give me goosebumps every play.
As I grew older I discovered more genres of metal and music in general but nu-metal was always in my life, and it always will be!
I'm 57, the same age as most guys who were/are Nu Metal. We're all GenX. I think my favorite part was picking up my daughter from some event, I don't remember what, and her friends pile into the minivan and hear either Korn or Deftones and are all "OMG! This is the best! You have the coolest dad!"
I wear that moment with pride, I see it as the pinnacle of my dad days. Kids are in college now, this was pre-pandemic.
I’ve been expecting it to make a comeback for awhile now. It just seems like something today’s kids would like.
My 14 year old daughter is right there with it. Particularly Deftones. Took her to Deftones, Korn twice, Tool twice, among others.

I’m honestly happy nu-metal is becoming popular again. I’ve been a fan for 15 years. It seems like so many more opportunities to see shows lately. I will say I miss the days where crowds were much smaller. I was able to see slipknot front row at one point!

I'm almost afraid to believe that Nu-Metal is getting popular again. I think I'll give it another year and see, I would be so happy for Nu-Metal to become mainstream again. It got dunked on for so long and I never understood why, the music was so GOOOD
