Im 42 now. When i was around 10 another kid showed me, the tv show Bottom. It was the greatest thing id ever seen. Me and my brothers watched it every week religiously
Yes... THANKYOU Ade!!! As a teenager I saw Bottom Live (the big no. 2 tour) at the Bristol Hippodrome... It remains my favourite night I've ever spent in a theater... (and I've seen Mark Rylance do Henry V at the Globe!)
I love Ade and relate to him very much, especially so since finding out in recent years about his childhood. But the biggest thrill I got of Ade's more recent work was unexpectedly seeing him in Star Wars. He did an absolutely fantastic job! Loved every precious second of his appearance. But my favourite Ade moment is, of course, hitting the gas man, with Rik 😆
I hope you've seen it, but if not watch Mr jolly lives next door. It's a comic strip film and it's absolutely hilarious. 1987. I think it's thier next best stuff next to bottom.
@gregtees9995 Will check it out. I don't think I've seen that one. The only one I can remember is when they were running the hotel. Thanks for the tip, Greg ☺️
Mr Jolly Lives Next Door and Bottom are up there in the highest echelons of Comedic Violence. Thank you Ade and Rik for hours and hours of hysterical laughter
Desperately want to read this. MTV introduced the Young Ones to America, when I was in college and it, Monty Python and Fawlty Towers opened up a whole world of British comedy to me; but, the Young Ones gave me access to the Alternative Comedy scene, which really reflected my generation.
my generation grew up on them to, The young ones, blackadder and red dwarf were on constant rotation in my house despite me being too young to get all the jokes. Now the blurays of them are on constantly and I've passed them on to my cousins kids
Red Dwarf is the perfect example of "Better to burn out than fade away" and why I'm not bothered bottom, or something similar with rik and ade, didn't continue. Soon as Dwarf wasnt grant and doug together it lost something. They were the perfect writing duo because one was more 'sitcom' and one was more 'sci-fi'. Forget which was which but if you read the books they wrote separately its super apparant what they both brought to the show.
@fromthedumpstertothegrave3689 spot on, I only bought RD s7&8 on dvd to finish up the big logo on the dvd case spine. The consolation prize was the alternative cuts of s7 in the dvd are better than the broadcast versions. Then it got worse. Then surprisingly s10 onwards I wouldn't say is a return to the form of s1-6, but definitely the best stuff since the partnership ended
@ yeah s10 was surprisingly alright. The s7 alternate cuts are so weird to watch because they don’t have the laugh track and you can see how unused the actors are leaving pauses for laughs to be put in later rather than playing off an audience.
G'day from Australia. Thanks guys. I am on my second listen of Berserker and it is awesome. I will be going for a third time I think. As a kid in Australia seeing The Young Ones for the first time, I had no idea who any of the cast were. I knew nothing of The Comic Strip presents etc. It would be decades later before I learned about how the whole group got together etc. so it is all fascinating to me. I have also enjoyed the interviews with Pete and Nigel talking about Bad News etc. Some of the stories in Berserker made me feel a bit guilty about loving some of Adrian's work so much. It is hard to reconcile the fact that a person who was going through such hard times mentally and emotionally was responsible for bringing myself so much fun and joy. If I met Adrian I wouldn't know whether to say thank you or sorry 🙂. I also think that Bad News is funnier than This is Spinal Tap.........just saying.
I have only seen Ade live during a Bonzo Dog gig. If that was the only thing, I would still love him. The accummulation of all the other great work makes him iconic.
I was 18 and my flat mate wanted to watch a cooking show instead of The Young Ones. I was the epitome of a compliant guy, but wouldn't have it. Note: in those days you only had one chance to see stuff. Years later, I cancelled a curry order because Spaced and Black Books was on in 20 minutes.
He drives me crazy. Ok, so Young Ones was only 14 weeks of his life. What is the minimum proportion of his life that would be worth celebrating? I wish he’d realise that his contribution to the world is more than time. It’s time multiplied by impact. Young Ones, Bad News, are both immortalising and deserve more than they get. Ade should celebrate that stuff more simply because the work deserves it. Literally every kid in a heavy metal band FOREVER will be able to quote the two Bad News records in their entirety. His creation will live for eternity.
He is happy to talk about it and it's proud of it but I get the impression it's more because he feels he doesn't have much to tell; he didn't write any of it or do any of the production etc. whereas Bottom he has lots to say.
Adrian’s Insights into the boarding school system were / are incredibly insightful. I went through that too and even was at the same school and agree 100% with his insights . His desert island disks is even more impressive and I need to read the book! I’m a bit younger that Adrian but went to a place called Howsham Hall which honestly made Pocklington look like Hogwarts. The teachers at Howsham were absolute abusive scum.
Bit of a follow on - I was on the 65 bus from Richmond to Kingston when my niece sent me a text saying Rik had died. My heart broke (Same bus that a sweaty Richard E. Grant sat next to me on once. He was wearing a pink shirt & because he was sweaty, his nipples were very obvious). I felt depressed for the next day until coming home from work on the same bus & on the same wall we passed as I got that text message now had grafitti of Rik as Richie telling me I had a smashing blouse. My faith in humanity gained many levels that day.
Imagine if Jerry Sadowitz and Rik Mayall were in the same sitcom? For a kick off, I'm surprised it never happened. Both rated Alexei Sayle very highly. Both contributed to alternative comedy.
There is something to be said about the way Boarding Schools treat people and the way people turn out. But still, like Al Murray said, it's not the child's fault they went there. Plus it's not like people who go to state schools all turn out perfectly, I mean look at Lee Anderson he's one of us plebs and he's one of the worst politicians I've ever seen. Still I've always struggled with this notion that it's worth it, all that pain and sorrow on the off chance you create an evil genius who knows how to make a whole country miserable and get away with it. Why is that 'worth it' for your child? Perhaps some people really do just covet power and control and money and don't care about the lives they destroy along the way. Perhaps human beings really are just extremely flawed and there's no great plan, we are all on a course to self destruction because your average citizen would sooner see a psychopath in charge than someone who might actually make people's lives better. I'll never understand it myself.
What about supporting Richard Herring for bringing this to the masses and the sneak peak here? Seems disrespectful to ignore the man that made this all possible.
@ You can’t actually be Richard replying, he simply must have better things to do 😅 Yea I recall it. I despise them equally. I’m just sick of my comedy heroes pretending that the tories are the only bad governors, it’s utter nonsense. Blair destroyed the country ffs
@@jamesnunn7181I think most comedians are fairly ambivalent and unbiased and can see through both sides, but we’re talking about this govt v last one and whilst neither seems any good at all I’d say this one objectively better but it’s much too early to call. You also have to accept that no govt is going to be everything you want but Blair in spite of many terrible calls did better than previous and subsequent govt for regular people. Judging starmer 2 months suggests prejudgment but then again we got the measure of Truss quicker than that. I don’t think either person on this podcast is particularly pro-labour though. I can really only define myself as against the Tories but was prepared to give them all a chance, except the one who crashed the economy and isn’t sorry
I've been quietly resentful towards Ade since he was seemingly embarrassed to work with Rik shortly before he died, and I think it's because by belittling his own work on the YOs and Bottom, Ade made the feelings of joy and anarchy somehow less special. This was lovely though. Top bloke.
My understanding was that Rik wanted to do more Bottom and Ade felt it had run it's course and felt that what was being written just wouldn't have been worth doing. I know that he deeply cared about Rik as a friend, that's what matters. Professional relationships are different to friendships and no matter how close a friend you are to someone that doesn't mean you work with them no matter what.
@@lloroshastar6347 I say this as someone that adores Bottom. Honestly, I can't get enough Bottom. But bottom had run dry. ...Anyway, watching the 4th bottom live I dunno if it was just not a great night when they taped it or if the whole show had lost something but it didn't seem to have the same energy.
He talks about that in the bottom documentary, Rik became difficult to work with after his accident - no feeling of embarrassment as far as I could see. Just wanted to move forward rather than go back to the well.
@@mash83 interesting. As a direct result of the accident? Aquired brain injuries can be horrible for alternating people just enough to change them without it being immediately obvious. I noticed on the bottom live after the accident rik was basically led by ade for the whole performance in terms of ques and didn’t have and big scenes to himself which he seemed to revel in in the earlier shows. If he was unable to hold his own but maintained the attitude he was the star I can see that would be difficult to work with
@@pixelfrenzy It's not an interview show, it's a conversation show and whilst I am happy to let the guest dominate if that's what they want, I also recognise that shyer and less show-offy guests sometimes need the security of me getting a laugh/telling a story, before they open up. It's also totally ad-libbed with no edits (except for libel) and so sometimes it's not going to be as slick as TV shows. But I don't record for 3 hours to get 30 minutes.
