Mr Jolly lives next door is hands down the greatest premise for any comedy ever. A hitman has an office next door to an escort agency and the note saying "take out Nicholas Parsons" goes through the wrong letterbox. It is genuine genius.
I remember how sad I felt when I heard Rik died. I don't know what year exactly but I first saw the Young Ones on Mtv late on, I think Sunday nights. Drove my mom mad cause I couldn't keep from laughing, in Vyv's words, very noisily. Being from a small town in Tx., most people I tried to get to watch it just couldn't get it. The british accents, the slang, mostly, it just didn't register. But I was all in. I tried to see anything any of the boys were in and French and Saunders too. That particular group of comedy geniuses have brought me so many laugh's and continue to now. I could never say a big enough Thank you to them.
Wonderful hearing from one of the comedy greats. I still have and regularly watch the Bottom series and stage shows. Rik and Ade heroes of mine to this day.
Lee Mack Interviews Ade Edmondson 1640pm 10.5.23 both acts, here, renowned for shouting.... lee during his panel show and stand up routines and ade via young ones, bottom... filthy rich and catflap etc etc... i would have been about 9 years old when young ones aired - and the only question asked of me was: why were you up so late? it was the show to end all shows for infant school and secondary school kids... says a lot about the humour, really....
Thank you so much for posting this (and indeed the rest of the series) - aside from one episode, I missed the entire series of Chain Reaction on its original broadcast run, and it's a delight to randomly happen across this particular one. Looking forward to ploughing through the rest of the episodes, now - it's such a good thematic concept. Ade Edmondson was one of my childhood comedy heroes, having first discovered The Young Ones in 1982 when I was barely out of primary school (ahh, halcyon days), and it's great to get some extra insights into the formative years of he and Rik's working relationship. Great interview all round by Lee Mack. Thanks again!
Rik is still such a massive loss nearly 9 years since he passed. With Ade they were just brilliant. I still watch Bottom and FR&CF. And still laugh my head off it.
Lee Mack Interviews Ade Edmondson 1706pm 10.5.23 they thought a joke about the morning sun rising... morning has broken as neil sits watching out his window...
I saw the Bad Shepard's at the Lamer tree Festival, they do bizarrely wonderful punk cover songs done in a folk music style. There was all these lawyers & estate agents with their wine cooler box`s dancing around to the sex pistol`s & the clash tunes. It was a very odd British moment.
@James Rowden Rik called Ade and said he had an idea for a new show and would Ade like to get together and work on a script but Ade said no because he didn't think he was funny anymore.
Lee Mack is so incredibly quick witted, so for him to show so much restraint in this interview tells me he was just a little bit in awe of a comedy genius. I saw one of the Bottom live shows and Rik & Ade were just amazing; they worked so well together. Such a tragedy that 'The Old Ones' can never happen. RIP
Rik is one of my comedy heroes but he wouldn’t have had the success he had without Ade. The Dangerous Brothers was eye opening for me as a kid. Everything they ever did together was brilliant. Thank goodness Ben Elton wrote that essay!
Went to see Bottom live back in 2001 in Blackpool. I used to love seeing both of them going out of character when they done a live show. Bottom brilliant live. Glad I was there to witness that live show.
Don't leave it there tell us more, who is your Dad? I actually lived quite near Ade's parents in Bradford and near the school he went to.@@thesprawl2361
Thought this was going to be more recent. It stung when Ade mentioned he and Rik talked about doing a geriatric version of Bottom in the "future". It would've been great.
Great stuff. I remember the very first Comic Relief live show in 1986: it was like Woodstock for the whole alternative comedy scene, especially the Young Ones. I have never seen anything so funny since.
Did you see both of Ade's eyes roll to the right briefly near the beginning? Don't ask me for the timestamp because it was in an alternative reality. That I genuinely experienced. Somebody else was definitely in there looking through two small holes!
I was confused when he started talking about Rik & then released when this was recorded. I love the idea they had for a future project, would have been brilliant. RIP Rik Mayall
Ade was much chipper when Rik was alive and I understand that, can you imagine being Rik's best friend and what a loss that would be in your life. I'm still really sad about Rik passing but glad that Ade is still with us and I follow him on Twitter.
Two of my favourite comedians and so different in their approach. Highly entertaining. Shame Ade conflates Graeme Garden (of the Goodies) with Graham Chapman (of the Pythons) when talking about Marty Feldman's sad demise. We need more like this.
Love this. Slight dissonance every time Rik is mentioned in the present tense, and you have to remember it was recorded 4 years before he left us. Thank Evie!
Such a shame Rik and Ade never did more comedy. There was talk in about 2013 of a series based on Bottom Live 3 called Hooligan's Island but nothing happened. Ade wanted to do that one set in an old age home years later but, of course, Rik died. You should never take it for granted that you're still going to be here years down the line. Bottom, their most adult work, spawned 3 series, a movie and 5 live shows so who knows what amazing works they could have produced.
lovely interview, clearly taped before Ricks passing..shame,somehow I would love to know how he feels about that,as he kept fairly quiet about it and a rumour floated they fell out before Rick fell over. I totaly respect him for being so dignified and not pandering to anyones curiosity, but still I'd love to know as I love them both.
@@meh3247 Ade's reaction to Rik's death was surprising. I thought he would have been devastated, but he didn't seem that upset about it, if I'm honest. I think there is truth to the rumour that they fell out, I don't think they were close anymore, prior to Rik's passing.
Weird hearing this back. Rok and Ade reunion didn't happen. Also Ade's daughter Beattie is arguably better known as an actress than a comedian. Great interview
Lee Mack Interviews Ade Edmondson 1652pm 10.5.23 i enjoy stand up. i have no idea why he has such a downer on it.... the old guard which are still doin' the rounds eg: mick miller - are still funny... these guys all have their histories rooted in the music hall tradition - whether tedious stand up or weirdly absurdist alt comedy... there's no getting away from that...
What a great interview, you can tell the Respect Lee has for Ade in this interview. Two LEGENDs.
I'm sorry. Lee mack isn't fit to wipe Adès arris. Ade legend mack just isn't going out apart from selling out.
Mr Jolly lives next door is hands down the greatest premise for any comedy ever. A hitman has an office next door to an escort agency and the note saying "take out Nicholas Parsons" goes through the wrong letterbox.

He's written it, now. It's called Berserker.
Absolute legend. Joyfully spent my youth quoting Rik and Ade

Yeah it's bittersweet Ade talking about Rik here and what they want to do together.
wow, Lee mack is one of my favourite comics of this generartion and Rick and Ade are my all time favourites. Great interview

Lee is a friggin genius. He needs to do much more of this. Hes so great at it.
Evie, thank you so much for putting this up any interviews with Ade, are hard to come by especially since the passing of Rik, thank you 🙏🏽
Young ones were the highlight comedy of my youth. Such as shame Rik left us too early. Would've loved to see Rik and Ade doing a show again
@James Rowden Rik called Ade and said he had an idea for a new show and would Ade like to get together and work on a script but Ade said no because he didn't think he was funny anymore.
Thank you both for that and all that you do.
He was Classic In The Young Ones...
Two very funny fellas. God bless you both.
Aw I remember this interview! I’m feeling a bit nostalgic for both of these comedians. Thanks so much for posting!
Definitely were Kings of the world. And still are. Very insightful.
Fascinating interview, so sad Rik died, another of my kings of comedy, imagining the Old Gits...if only...thanks for sharing this👍

Or he was being a good interviewer
Fantastic comedy from Ade and Rik, young ones was my favourite
Rik and Ade in an old gits comedy would've been a classic, shame it'll never happen now. Legends of comedy!
Rik is one of my comedy heroes but he wouldn’t have had the success he had without Ade. The Dangerous Brothers was eye opening for me as a kid. Everything they ever did together was brilliant. Thank goodness Ben Elton wrote that essay!
My dad used to do stand up with them before he became an illustrator.

I think he would have been successful but in a different way, sometimes the stars line up just right and magic happens
That was a treat! Thank you!
Thought this was going to be more recent. It stung when Ade mentioned he and Rik talked about doing a geriatric version of Bottom in the "future". It would've been great.
superb posting, the world is a far gloomier place without both Ade and Rik, I grew up on them both. A legendary pair of comedy genius.
You know Ade isn’t dead right?
Evie thank you so much for cataloguing these uploads. I usually catch some of these on radio 4 extra but I miss most of them

These two are great.
Thanks.
Top flight interview. Very balanced and non combative.
Very enjoyable listen. Thanks.
I was just watching Five go mad in Dorset on the weekend. With lashings of ginger beer.

Amazed to hear a reference to the Batley Variety Club - my home town (back then) :)
it is mine. Its a shit hole now though
That was really sweet. Might’ve got a lump in my throat when he talked about the Old Gits
Oh, it's from 2010. I wondered why they kept referring to Rik in the present tense.
Thanks!
Lovely conversation.
Edmondson is brilliant.
Harry Enfield & Paul Whitehouse really beat them to it with the "Old Gits" idea.

Interview from 2010, was wondering why Riks death wasn’t mentioned.
What Alex Lowe is doing with his Barry from Watford and Clinton Baptist characters is very funny.
Just discovered the podcast a few weeks ago. So funny.
I love to read his autobiography if he does one.
The Elephant in the Room is Norman Wisdom

we had that book of Goon show scripts in our house too it was great full details of staging and everything
I'd love to hear Eddie do a long form Radio 4 show..
Like Woman's Hour... but for Sad Old Gits.
This is a great interview. Re: could you do The Young Ones today? Well, The Mighty Boosh.
Fabulous , thank you
Bottom! Brilliant!
Great interview.
Great interview. I'm a fan because of Bottom.
Fantastic. “Watched” the whole thing!

Chubby is a legend and still going. Not many comedians can say that. Some are truly funny then end up in Holby city. Even worse, working for the BBC.
I love Lee Mack but I think the title should be more like "Lee Mack Interrupts Ade Edmondson"
Wish Lee would just let Ade talk. He keeps nipping in with his own quips.
Rick would get the girls, & I would get them 2-3 weeks later 😂😂😂
Odd listening to this as they talk about Rick Mayal, as he was dead 4 years later....
I've got some sad and tragic news.
I love alternative comedy, sone folk call it tragedy
So sad they didn't get back to make more wonderful comedy with Rike"s passing.
