  • Euro NCAP frontal Impact takes place at 64 Km/h, 40% of the width of the car striking a deformable barrier. In the Full Width test, 100% of the width of the car the car impact a rigid barrier at 50 Km/h. In the side impact, a mobile deformable barrier impacts the driver's door at 50 km/h. In the pole test, the car tested is propelled sideways at 32 km/h into a rigid pole.

    I know and am very aware you never judge a cars Crash test by how it looks, it's all about the safety of the passengers inside the car but it is a very scary looking crash scene, even though the car has a 5 star rating!

    A complete rollover at a standart side impact gives it a 5 star rating? Are you guys sure you know how hard it is for the average people, who have their mental abilities compromised from the surprise of car accident to get out of an up side down vehicle?! Not to talk about the head banging on the car, on the floor, and then up side down.

      Macavellic - Maybe the data from the crash test dummies revealed that the forces experienced by the occupants was a minimum, hence 5 stars. I agree that it is strange... I think they should share more data (such as max force experienced by occupants).

      Macavellic - ...because the main reason people die from car crashes is not protruding objects or fires... it is your internal organs rupturing from acceleration (negative acceleration/deceleration). Newton said the average force is equal to the change in momentum over time.

      Macavellic Rollover is not in their test protocoll^^. Dummy readings stop direct after side impact. Rollover mostly depends on the type of asphalt the car is driving on.

      Macavellic This roll over happened because the vehicle that hit the Espace didn't stop, like it does in every other video, and it hit the car again, exactly at the right time when the car actually landed and bounced back up, and that bounce was amplified by the second hit, and caused it roll over. It wouldn't happen in real life.

    It's still 5 stars because yes it rolled over, but that isn't necessarily bad. If the roof doesn't deform the passengers shouldn't feel anything too painful.

      Mau506 Dummy readings shut off after side impact so it doesn't count the rollover.

      +Mau506 Well, it is only meant to be a small penalty. The rollover isn't high risk in itself, but the door opening causes stuff like that to be. And considering everything else, only the door opening could be penalised.

    Doors should never open during a crash, rear door does 1:37, why does this deserve a 5 star rating, it should have a maximum of 4. Plus the car rolls, when side impacted.

      The door opens because of the barrier, and the latch failed. However, it does provide good protection to the head and chest, so rolling over doesn't matter. It just needed seatbelt pretensioners.

      cameron20020 On their website, Euro NCAP write "The rear driver's side door opened during the test, presenting a risk of ejection for those in the vehicle and the score was penalised." But still got 5 stars^^

      alexauto321 It's because it's irrelevant. You clueless people with no understanding of mechanical engineering, not even the basics of it, don't get it that this was a freak accident. It happened only because the dimensions of the impact car is exactly right to hit the door at an exact spot to make all the safety pieces of it break and make it open. It wouldn't happen in 99,9% of other cases.

    Looks much worse than it actually is, well, to those who don't know anything about crash tests, which is, lets be honest, pretty much everyone who watches this videos. Frontal impacts look bad because the windscreen is so close to the front of the car and there's a lot of damage. Side impact was good (except the door opening and car rolling over) since the forces and damage to the passangers was minimum. Pole test was bad because this car has a glass roof and a lot of structural rigidity is lost at that particular spot.
    It's still beyond me why it rolled over though. It's a relatively low car with a low center of gravity compared to other MPV's. The moving obstacle that hit it sideways probably gave it too much of a push on second contact....

    In the full frontal impact why isn't there a passenger airbag? Was it purposely turned off?

      ***** There are a few reason: perhaps it was purposely turned off, perhaps its because in a full frontal crash the passenger's head won't hit the dashboard or maybe because there was no passenger/dummy inside it so it wasn't detected and airbag didn't deployed

      +Aristotelis Mitsiou (tkk7406) Modern cars have mechanisms that detect whether the passenger airbag has to be deployed or not. Airbag replacements are very expensive and being an essential system, not something you want to fiddle with, thus it won't deploy unless the car detects a passenger. It's the same mechanism that gives out a warning signal if you don't fasten your seatbelt.

    Pues vaya 5 estrellas le dan a un coche que vuelca por completo en un impacto lateral y que además es incapaz de frenar a 50km/h para evitar una colisión por detrás al vehículo delantero. Mal mal, muy mal👎

      LrG426 нет, и все жидкости заменены на аналогичные по плотности, но не горючие, но ключ в замке повернут, чтобы все системы функционировали, когда вольво обблажались в самой первой демонстрации сити сейфети именно отсутствие питания оказалось причиной, такая мелочь сильно ударила по репутации вольво, хотя потом во всех тестах подобных систем вольво была лидером, ей до сих пор это припоминают не особо шарящие люди

    almost ordered a new Espace on Friday until I saw this, sorry but how the hell can you give this 5 stars when it rolls over on the side impact test ?? Well done Renault, reduce the headroom and then dump you on yours. I have not seen any other vehicle that does this...Fuck this shit, VW / Ford here I come...by the way I have the Espace IV and WAS a Renault fan.

    I wonder how much Renault it's paying them. Seriously? The car flipped on its side. The rear door flew open. In the offset front collision the back of the driver dummy's head created intro the middle pillar because it bounced off the airbag at the wrong angle. Nevermind the debris flying in the back seat in every front collision. They ought to be ashamed!!

    That AEB was .. Ummm really bad, they need to improve it and I think they did because the Infiniti Q30's AEB works really well. *ps: Renault is owned by Nissan and Nissan owns Infiniti so they are one group.
