I have a first-hand Phil story. I was at a 3rd Strike tournament in Virginia at an old venue called C3. It was 2008, the year there was no Evo East. It was around Top 32 or Top 16 and I had to play Phil. He beat me with Chun, 2-0, and before I could even shake his hand and say "good game", he yanked his plug out of the PS2 and said "welp, that was fun" and just left. He beat some unknown kid from New York and felt so good about himself. Also, that footage you used in the beginning of Phil blowing up at someone calling his match was from my tournament, East Coast Throwdown, in 2009. He was nothing but trouble. The tournament was fucking terribly ran (we've since improved, 9 years later haha), but he refused to ever make an effort to go play his matches. He would sit at casual stations until someone literally went over to him and directed him where to go. ECT1 was extremely stressful and was our first foray into running a regional, weekend-long event, but he was a complete asshole the entire weekend.
This is far and away an incredibly centered piece about this time in the DSP lore. Thanks for your work. Narration and presentation are quite commendable.

ms03878 you don't need to know the exact frames to know what's plus and negative on block. If you get counter hit while trying to retaliate after blocking you know the opponent has frame advantage. Dsp doesn't understand this and just keeps pressing buttons get counter hit and saying he didn't press anything. If he was actually just blocking he would never get caught with frame traps.

I've researched Phil and the Evo incident and what happened was the organizers let everyone know which version of the game was going to be played ahead of time and Phil was one of the few people who showed up to Evo and trained specifically in that version right up until the tournament was held. So hate him as you will, but the guy, instead of complaining, like Choi and Watson, adapted and learned the game that was going to be played. See evo is as much about luck as it is about skill. You might get a good bracket to run in, a top player or rival might not make it, or in this case, you get a game that few people can play. A lot of things feel into place for Phil, and though he's an idiot on his channel and really milked the situation, I don't think he deserves the hate for placing 4th at Evo. He got really lucky, others got unlucky, some like Valle didn't show up, the game version worked to his advantage and he studied it to win. For DSP, the stars aligned at Evo2k5.
