I took my 7 year old out to pick tomatoes the other day, and he said “are we picking these to can so we will have tomatoes all winter?” My grouchy heart grew two sizes. They do pick it up, and it is natural to them as breathing. I learned from my grandmothers (real and adopted). My own mother isn’t into voluntary farm work, but she taught me to prep in other ways - disaster preparedness, personal safety, etc.

When my grandmama died we found her stash....
she had enough coffee, toilet paper and soap powder to last all 3 of her grown sons and their families 1 yr each.
Every time she had a coupon she used it on the smallest size she could get with that coupon. I was just a kid so I didn’t understand it but I certainly do now.
And let me tell you she could make the best meal out of nothing

Most people don't even know who their ancestors were, much less how they lived. There was a time in the past that if you didn't grow or raise food to can, freeze, smoke and salt, you were lazy, crazy or weird.

    I guess I am a “ nut” lol
In our 57 year marriage we have had a few times that were rough and food was scarce so I have learned how to stock for “rainy days” and kids, its pouring rain ! ⛈
    Communism/socialism is not a joke.
Its all mind control in 2021.
No one EVER was called extremist
For growing gardens and canning, until the last 9 months, and it does indeed “ piss” me off😡
I am keeping on keeping on!!!!!!!
    God Bless America🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

It's Labor Day and I have been laboring all day long. lol... I found ribeye steaks and roasts on sale. I've vacuum sealed 32 ribeyes and 8 roasts. I'm going back tomorrow and pick up more roasts if they have any left. I have been canning chicken all day long and just put the last load in the canner. The dehydrator is going with carrots in it and the freeze dryer is going with sweet onions in it. I've always been been a prepper, even before the word prepper was a thing. I have tomatoes and spaghetti sauce that needs to be made. The scuppernong and muscadine grapes are starting to come in- juice and jellies need to be made and I will get it done this week. They can say what they want about me- I don't care. It doesn't bother me one bit. As always, you are spot on! You are a blessing to those who are following you and learning to can. You are a great one to teach them. Even though I'm a canner, I still watch, it doesn't matter how proficient you think you are, you can always learn and that's the attitude I want to keep.

I was prepping before it was cool. I watched my granny be teased by family members for “hoarding” because her pantry was alway full and even when my grandparents became very financially comfortable, she always had a huge vegetable garden. She told me that as long as God gave her the strength to dig in the dirt, she would grow food because she didn’t trust the banks or government. Children of the depression, who fought in WWII, were truly the greatest generation. Sending you love friend!

My gramma came to Canada from Ireland during the potato famine. She KNEW. She didn't waste a thing. I was once mocked for boiling down my turkey bones to make turkey soup after Thanksgiving by a mother at my children's school. She told me that's what depression wives did. It was 2009. The ironic thing was, she was from Ireland. I'm so blessed I had my gramma to teach me so many things

It's like the people who get mad because you "squirrel" away a little money, here and there for the future. Being prepared is not a bad thing, I have realized over the last 18 months a-lot of people don't think of tomorrow. I don't wait for directives from anyone, I know what my family needs. So I guess I am a preper, I am going to sleep fine to night.
All the best to you and your family ❤️

i do the baking to teach my grandkids how to bake bread, make soups and stews. My children can also bake bread and other things . It is a skill to pass on and a very important skill they need to survive if they every can't buy items in the stores. My great grandma and grandma and mom taught me these for a reason; to pass on and learn from it.

My canner is a presto. Only does 4 pints at a time. But I did some sort of canning and dehydrating everyday in August. Have quite the stock pile put up. IM HAPPY WITH IT!

My Mom was 4 when WWII broke out in the UK. She is just now telling me of the hard times they had during this time. She was one of the children sent out to the country to be safe from bombing. Families were given chickens to raise during the war, along with victory gardens. My dad however was oblivious to WWII in the USA as a child. I think it was worse than the great depression. We truly are spoiled today. I live in the burbs and my neighbors are worried I have square foot gardens :-). I do my own thing these days. At the age of 65 I wish I had more land out in the country, but I get creative with what I have.

I am also 65. Both sets of my grandparents had gardens and chickens and put up lots of food each year. My one Grandma's basement probably had a year's worth in it! I have followed in their footsteps snd even use my Grandma's pressure canner! Being as self reliant as possible is a terrific thing! Let's not let age stop us either....

I have an urban farm, that I call The broken wheelbarrow ranch (there really is a broken wheelbarrow) we grow: raspberries, strawberries blackberries and two large garden plots with corn, cucumbers, pie pumpkins yellow and green zucchini, celery, green peppers tomatoes, carrots, Chinese peas, and string beans! I also plant vegetables among the flowers in my flowerbeds and rockery. Want chickens, but folks let their dogs run lose, so I am saving up to make my yard safe for chickens. This year I an exploring fermentation and dehydration...the FUN just never stops😝

Regarding is it crazy to can up stewed tomatoes: I think it's crazier to spend $$ for a farmer to grow it for you, a laborer to harvest it, a trucker to deliver it and don't forget the diesel it cost to get it to the store where you have to pay the store for sub par stewed tomatoes. Especially when a $3 pack of seeds gives me enough to can a years worth of fresh, organic stewed tomatoes. 😃 🍅 🍅 🍅 Just like my Mamaw the O.G. Mad Prepper. 😃

It is like you personally knew my Granny. She was the God fearing, Proverbs 31 living, matriarch of our family who taught those of us willing to learn how she and Grandad survived everything the 20th century threw at them. She was a natural educator from her first assignment in a one room schoolhouse until her body failed her in her old age. I hung on every word she said and watched everything she did. I was always sad my cousins felt they had better things to do with their time. The lessons she taught me are invaluable! May I be at least half the woman Granny was. 🙏🏻

Yes, she was! Anyone who lived through the Great Depression was a prepper. It was a way of life. The last 50 years have been years of abundance, and society has forgotten what it's like to do without. We've gotten soft. Survival skills have been lost. We need to keep those skills alive. Self-sufficiency rules.

Have to say one more thing: I feel in my spirit that God is going to take us down a notch or two, as my mother used to say. We are such a spoiled society. Plus, most of us have never lived through a depression where you can’t get the things you want and need. We are already a much changed society. And, I think this is just the beginning!! God bless America!! ♥️❣️🙏🏼❣️♥️

50 years ago I heard stories about the great depression from my great grandparents. They would always say, "it's not a matter of IF but WHEN!" There was no government assistance. If you don't have the skills to survive, you don't survive." Plain and simple. Thanks for sharing Patara.

And now all I can think about is doing my canning with a man in a kilt! Love a man in a kilt; don’t even care if his legs are so bowed that they form a circle 😊. Seems that the word ‘prepper’ has become synonymous with wacko. I’m an old fashioned farm gal who dares to be food self reliant…and fancies a man in a kilt.

She doesn’t get that I don’t want to go out and take vacations. It’s completely foreign to her. She makes me laugh in a way. Because she doesn’t get it. Makes me sad at the same time. Because she doesn’t get it. I’m going to do me, regardless of anyone’s opinion. Maybe I’m crazy. Maybe I’m not. Either way, who has a better chance in the end?

Seeing your black walnuts brought back good memories of my grandparents! 😊 Every time we would go there in fall we'd be sent out to pick up walnuts. We would put them out on the narrow concrete sidewalk that led from the back door to the outhouse & barn so they'd get walked on to work off the outer hull. (It's a wonder to me now that none of us had a broken neck rolling around on those! 😂) Then the nuts would be put into mesh potato bags & hung on the clothesline to "wash clean" as Grandma would say! I've never liked black walnuts but gather as many hickory nuts as I can every fall! God bless!

Whenever we visited my Aunt Josephine and Uncle Arcy they were happy to pass on their knowledge and I soaked up as much as I could. From working in the garden to butchering animals. Can't do as much as I would like but I'm doing something. Your animals are so well cared for and loved. You can see in their temperaments and how shiny their coats are. Keep passing on your wisdom, we aren't loopy, were practical. Stay blessed.

I have very close family that are like that, putting me down and not supporting me in anything that I do. I am 64 and damn tired of it. I don't listen to them so I am not sure why they continue to try to control me. It's not happening. They don't support me prepping.

My neighbor threatened to sue me and my city and made them change the ordinance to force me to get rid of my chickens and the day after the birds were gone he had someone deliver him fresh eggs. He has criticized us over and over about not having a perfect yard and growing veggies instead he doesn't like me teaching my kids either because he says we can just run to the store😑 I've fought to teach my kids how to prep and survive and they worked so hard but so many people really dislike homesteaders and I've never understood why?? I wanted to carry on my grandmother worked so hard to teach me. And I want to thank you so much for encouraging others without being devisive and you are such a relief from all the hate being spread all over thank you for always sharing positive vibes❤

I was reading a story one day and it was about Preppers and as I read it, I realized that I had been prepping all my life (and didn't know it had a name) Both sets of my Grandparents were either born just before the end of WWI or just after the end of it, they went through that, the great depression and the rationing during WWII, My Momma was born in 1940 and what people call prepping was everyday life to us.

My great grandmother had a root cellar and a garden. I learned from her. I'm not stopping my canning or putting back for nothing. I'm doing as my ancestors did.
    You go Patera!

So true. My grandmother’s grew organically before it became fashionable. The reason so the grandchildren could eat straight of the garden. I was with several older cousins last week who reminded me that I liked raw okra out of out maternal grandmother’s garden. It brought a smile to my face.

My great Grandmother's were Choctaw, and Blackfoot. They raised their daughters and sons to prep.
My parents are/were boomers. I'm a tech boom baby. I'm the first one in a couple of generations that wants to do things the ways My GGma's did it. I always have.
I've finally got my 75 year old mom on board. It's a late start, but... it's better late than never. Never shouldn't be the standard (just like nothing)... but, well, sometimes it's your starting point. 🧡 It's never too late. Once you get your foundation, never/nothing no longer serves as your standard.

I was born in the early 1950s. Both my Mom & Dad were children during the Depression. My maternal Grandma lived with us until she died when I was just 10 years old. She was a single mother during the Depression. My maternal Grandpa died when my Mom was only 3. It was a hard life. I grew up learning to eat what were "strange" meats to my friends. Liver, chicken livers, chicken hearts. Things like that. Still do. No part of any protein went to waste. I always save the bones & skin from chicken or turkey to make stock to freeze. There are only 2 of us & I no longer have the stamina (severe asthma) to do canning. But I stock up on our basics when they're on sale & we grew some veggies in containers this year. I learned to sew & quilt & crochet from my Mom & Grandma. All of this was a very valuable lesson to learn, even though I didn't really appreciate it as a kid. I never had kids (my own choice) so much of what I learned will die with me. Keep teaching those kids so they can learn from you.

I had a friend tell me that I wasn't an OLD woman. "Why are you canning and gardening"? So I made it a point to have her over for some TOMATO BASIL soup in the middle of winter. I said, "Gail, where can you get this now"?

On the humor side: I have a stead...I picked dew berries as a kid and teen... but now I’m affraid to eat my berries growing randomly on my fence...they’re dew berries! I ate god knows what as a kid w out fear...but it’s different when you’re the one in charge of everyone else’s safety...
    God bless you sister!!!!
You speak my heart sweet sister.
Thank you for talking about this!!!!
My man is a kilted clan Warrior too! That was fun for you to share🥰
Any of us taught by a grandma, even if for one day, is beyond Blessed! To have something exposed to us that tickeled us the rest of our years. I may not have learned much but I learned what they now call “homestead” (just normal home back then), what chickens can do and how to feed an infant because mom can’t produce during starvation periods.

you are so correct, my grandmother was ready all the time for what ever came. work the land, live together, simple life, follow the promise and survive. Yes, yes I have been told over and over that I am nuts at my age to be growing my own food, food and canning, and storage. I just laugh and tell my self well when they can't get any at the store, I will be eating well.

I definitely learned my "pack rat" as my kids call it, from my Grandma. As a kid, I used to tell her that if there was ever an appocolipse I was shopping at her house! I can remember her saying "Oh Michka" my nickname, you can ship here anytime" .....just thinking about this puts a smile on my face.🤗
