This video is a godsend. I was a former 6 digit who went all the way from rank 489k to 59k due to Tonehh's great videos. I'm currently looking to improve my DT skill, especially DT 3-note and 5-note bursts. Really am thankful for Tonehh's channel, and this video inspired hope in me because I've become hardstuck lately lol.
As of typing this comment I am currently rank 95k and have been playing for about a year and a half. When I was only rank 300k, I was struggling a lot with HardRock and DoubleTime due to how high the AR becomes. The easiest AR for me was 9 which was average for a 5 star map on any mapset. I’ve had a lot of experience with not just the three mods described in the video, but also the rest of the mods. When you first equip them, you won’t be sure what to do, and you’ll have to get used to them. I only use Sudden Death and Perfect if I’m farming, or if I’m really, REALLY confident that I can get through the map without messing up. However it is really cool seeing these mods on the leaderboard (For example, Vaxei’s HDPF SS on The Big Black) I know a lot of 5 digits and 6 digits hate Easy. I know they’re more focused on higher AR, but they may have not tried this mod yet. I find it really fun. Ekoro, badeu, and a few other top players find it really fun too. Easy cuts every stat in half, and on top of that, makes the whole map more dense and harder to read. What I mostly do when I am playing Easy is I pay attention to the song so that I know when to hit the next note. HalfTime, in my opinion, the most underrated mod. It lowers the AR, OD, and makes the map slower, it’s the opposite of DoubleTime. But it’s extremely useful in some ways. If the map is too fast or too hard for you, and you are forgetting about this mod, use it. Some great examples would be Yomi Yori, Image Material, Libera, and other maps that are at a really high star rating. Usually speed maps become more comfortable consistency maps, spaced stream maps become slow flow aim maps. When combined with Easy, the AR always becomes at most 1.6, the lowest I can read as of today. Flashlight…… is the hardest mod of all time. It’s really tough to hold a combo after 200, the area you can view is at its smallest. I use it if I played a map so much, and that I memorize it enough. I find Flashlight a bit easier with lower AR because I get a bit more time to find each note. I’d say that older maps (like all the way back in 2007-2010) that require no aim are also good to practice with Flashlight. Finally, we don’t talk about Autopilot and Relax. :tf:
one small correction: DT doesn't give the same score multiplier as HDHR. DT gives 1.12x, while HDHR gives 1.1236x. That's why HDHR scores are higher on the leaderboard than DT only.
i've been using your videos since i was a literal 7 digit, you were probably the first osu content creator i ever watched. i remember watching the "HUGE BEGINNER MISTAKE IN 2020" when i first started (and also how i had made almost every single mistake lol). these videos are great. they really helped me understand the fundamentals of improvement and how to get better at the game. i just set my first 300 pp yesterday, and i owe it all to the advice i've recieved from not only these videos, but my friends too. keep up the amazing work 👍
one thing to mention about hardrock, getting good accuracy on od10 has almost nothing to do with rhythm sense since most of the maps played commonly with hardrock are super simple with 1/2 and 1/4 only. its more of a reading thing than a rhythm thing imo
I guess an easy way to start reading lower AR with HD would be to play old maps from 2009 and such. As an SS farmer, I play a lot of 3 mod on low AR maps and trust me, it's really just all about focusing on the beat.
1:00 that soundtrack, with a super high intelectual speech that we mortal humans have to use our full potencial to just understand 10% of it. I came FeelsStrongMan (also how to you have target practice as a mod in osu? I only have it on Mcosu)
I played some of the songs in the DT pack for getting familiar with DT and my ranking has went from 68,000 to 64,000 in just two days. You weren't joking about them being farm, but at the same time in the Beginner pack I'm already finding some "wtf is this!?" maps. Like why the 4th map in that pack!? it's so cursed!
I have watched the first beginners mistake vid and all the vids after pertaining to improvement, i have gone full circle and have discovered i can actually play some dt for farming. thank you and hypno for carrying me from 250k to 35k via nomod. thank you for the mods guide, now i know i can farm DT. thought i was gonna go the HD HR route because of my singletapping, but lo and behold: pp.
will definitely check out the dt map pack next time i play, i've been having trouble learning dt because it's so hard to find starter maps that are at both an ar and bpm that i am comfortable at and i've mostly been editing stats in mcosu to practice so hopefully the map pack will have what i need ^^/
Dudee the hr part is so relatable, i kept hring on 3* lobbies when i was 300k until i realized i wasnt improving good thing i watched ryuk's guide to streams
DT kind of seems like beating the WoF in terraria. Once you beat the early game, you come back and relearn the game all over again in hard mode. Same seems to be the case with DT, where you go back to basics and relearn everything all again. Seems cool.
I have been playing HD since I started the game and what you say about it is true. In fact, I couldn't play without HD at all, even at low ARs which is weird. Currently at 160k rank. I mostly play jumps, but I can also play burst and tech.
To add on this great vid, newer players (or players who want to train specifically and not care much for pp) may opt to try osu lazer and import maps there instead. Lazer has an AMAZING difficulty modifier mod that lets you change specific values in the map. Want to learn high ar but want to play familiar maps? Boost up ar and leave the rest at default. Want to get used to smaller circles but don't like the HP and AR penalty of hard rock? Increase CS and turn on mirror mode. Want to try 1.25x time? There's a mod for that too.
one of the best channels for tips. I was a jump one trick 6 digit with garbage acc around a year ago but now I got past that because of your osu! huge beginner mistake video. I am now rank with 50k with way better acc than before. thank you for making these amazing videos.
i'm a 6 digit and currently just learning modded gameplay and frankly i always just shy away if not get scared playing on mods, so far i'm learning DT for this week at least and now i can comfortably FC 5* maps (and even combo 6* on a few maps and there but AR9 DT is still kinda scary) if i wanted to and learning it did wonders on my speed, ill be learning HR next week hopefully it goes quite as well as DT. for anyone who's also learning mod's dont get discouraged when you suck at it because after all you don't become a speed god by doing nothing
What Tony said was true, I'm a high 6 digit (110k), I started playing consistency by not retry spam and play to the fullest to get comfortable and high combo without a lot of nerves (1000x combo), And I did before use mods (Preferably HD and DT) once in a while but once what Tony said, hitting that sweet spot, it definitely gets easier from then on, Especially DT, starting from DT High 3-4* stars to get used to AR 8-9 DT and speed (especially trying to alt when a burst is in after a jump) , and then work your way up from there. -said from experience
some days i can read any ar from ar 7.5 to even ar 10.5 but then i also have days where i cant even play maps properly if theyre over ar 9.5 i have no idea what to do to get more consistent
DT is much fun and beginner friendly on osu lazer. And, as you can increase the bpm precisely, you can play anything otherwise dumb dt maps when you're learning the mod. As an 80k rank player, i'm having a lot of fun increasing the speed of >5.5 stars maps than dting 3-4 stars.
Simple, just play more maps loke usually, until some moments bump up the difficulty, play higher atar rating, when react certain point of the star rating, only then start actually learn play with mods
Your videos are truly genius. I really, really hope you’re aware of that. It’s almost too good. I feel like a lot of players don’t even deserve this amount of assistance; it’s like a cheat code.
Currently 45k, I got over the "can only read AR10" issue that I had since I abused HDHR to reach 5 digit. Since then, I've branched out. Of all the mods, I tend to dislike DT/NC the most. The speed and AR aspect is a bit too much for me. It does feel good to branch out and be able to play different kinds of maps. Cannot emphasize the power of playing what you want to improve on to improve on it. Cheers, good video.
Question, if I'm already using HR, should I continue like I'm doing it now and keep my range of maps below AR7? I don't mind high cs and am trying to get better at it, and I think it helps me force to get as good as possible with timings because of the high OD Context: am a rank 300k player
personally I wouldn't recommend playing HR at this level since it's not very useful. you can get better at timings with higher OD as you naturally increase star rating with no mod and the cs isn't particularly high at your skill range anyway. my previous video talks a lot more about this. hope that helps!
@@Tonehhosu Saw the video, tho I don't think it really applies to me. Maybe a bit with some of my scores (almost perfect scores on maps boosted to around 4* thanks to HR and/or NC), I don't think I'm not improving. Tho I understand what you mean by trying to play harder diffs rather than boosting easier ones. It's a bit weird for me because I usually play older maps, and stats on those maps are super strange with difficulty. I'd recommend you rather check the profile if you wanna, name on osu is Kurboh. You don't need to if you don't want to ofc :p But yeah, asking in case I'm turning into a lost cause after a while Also, my profile has less than 300h playtime (getting close tho), so you're free to say just "play more" lol
@@skkotbtw Well, the times I play HR are when I am able to beat a map with HR. Since I play mostly old maps, that's me playing any AR6 map or below with HR. With old maps, even 4* difficulties had that low AR and I find it a nice challenge to me :p Next map I plan to FC is Chocobo [Black] (a 5* map when HR is applied) and I'm getting super close :)
@@dorianeu well, im just a 4digit trying to help. but im not very good at coaching, i would recommend you to play nomod. but if you're comfortable at playing hr and you feel improvement than who am i to judge?
I started playing hidden only EXCLUSIVELY about a month ago and holy shit it was the best decision of my entire osu carreer, i was stagnated at rank 200k for about 2 months before that and now im rank 180k, feelsgoodman Also i COMPLETELY lost my ability to read nomod so i started playing low star rating maps and dabbling in EZ and in about 3 days of that i got my reading back, so yeah dont hiperfocus LOL Edit: I dont know if anyone else also feels this but whenever i play nomod i feel like i have to look at the circles more than the cursor while when i play hidden i feel like i need to look at the cursor instead of the circles
I made the mistake of starting to play DT at like 300k and now I'm 90k (still playing Dt, and streams from time to time) and now I can't play anything below ar10, It's just too slow for me. So in conclusion this video is the best one for new players who want to know more about mods and when they should star playing them :)
When I just started playing osu! I found that I just couldn't read nomod. Maybe I'm dogshit, but it just felt very dense and congested. So I just started to play HD, and now I'm a HD one trick. Literally all my scores are with HD.
one more tip if you wanna try to read craazy high ar's, you could try using gamma. for me it was a godsend, and now i am on a training arc to master 3 mod.
I’m not good at high stars sadly. Aim is little issue for me most of the time, my tapping though sucks so much. I actually find myself playing a lot better on HR, so much so that nomod is harder than it for me where I’m comfortable now
Okay so he says hidden at mid to high 4 star, im playing mid to high 2 star but prefer hidden with hidden i can play up to low 3star do i stop hidden? Edit: i should also mention that its as i can see how many circles are on stacks and not feel rushed
Thanks for this. I feel like I ignored dt and hr way too much, and devoted wayyy too much time learning ez mod (like, half of my 2 year career now), in conjunction with nm and hd. Also, ez has completely killed my ability to read anything higher than ar 10, and while i knew high ar reading was pretty much brute force, i never got motivated enough. plus, i have like 0 finger control beyond 250 bpm but thanks for reminding me to finally pick my shit up and learn it :D
I’m around rank 440k but I’ve basically hit a wall where I can’t fc anything even if I want to (my accuracy isn’t that good either) i want to improve but like I don’t even know what to do at this point
im really bad at the game still and it's my 7th year of osu. Ive tried these forms of advice for years and still cant seem to overcome this skill wall I have been stuck at the 20-30k range for over 4 years!
as a mid 6 digit i dont really know what i am doing here, i was looking for learning HDDT, but i cant even FC 5 star maps, i think i should play with nomod more, and more and moar and mooooar
I can't tap the 3 stack circle of 3 stars so I start using hidden since I get comfortable with 2 stars and it was surprisingly easy not recommended though
true, asian kung fu generation makes some banger songs. this one is called After Dark, the map set is linked here: osu.ppy.sh/beatmapsets/855765#osu/1787984
"Hidden dosent have diminishing returns despite being one tricked " I tried joining a 6digit local tourna i was 160k and a HD one trick i got obliterated
I cant play HR at all, i keep shitmissing and misaiming because of the small CS. Accuracy and AR isn't a problem. When i play HR, i would get A rank, but i would usually have more misses than 100s. It's depressing really, I'm 13k and can't play anything other than DT..
78k and 51 days played, I learned how to play with HR from the start. DO NOT DO THIS. I have hit a 1 year wall but still see improvement everyday. The only real benefit so far is improved accuracy and high AR reading ( obviously ) I've been practicing low AR and I have great reading, but sometimes my aim gets slightly ahead and I notelock. The biggest issue playing only HR for 1200 hours is OD, I cant seem to unlearn OD 10. When I notelock on
This was a very informative video, I was a dt one trick back then but I started playing other skillsets and seen some improvement. And yea hopefully we will see more videos from you xD
Corrections (pointed out by others):
- HDHR is 1.1236x so is worth slightly more than DT only
Other notes:
- If you are still stuck on what maps to play with hidden or hard rock, you could try downloading the rehabilitation map pack or no mod consistency map pack in my server and putting the mods on those, these maps usually have basic patterns to learn from and play around with!

@@skkotbtw Well, the times I play HR are when I am able to beat a map with HR. Since I play mostly old maps, that's me playing any AR6 map or below with HR. With old maps, even 4* difficulties had that low AR and I find it a nice challenge to me :p
Next map I plan to FC is Chocobo [Black] (a 5* map when HR is applied) and I'm getting super close :)
@@dorianeu well, im just a 4digit trying to help. but im not very good at coaching, i would recommend you to play nomod. but if you're comfortable at playing hr and you feel improvement than who am i to judge?
I started playing hidden only EXCLUSIVELY about a month ago and holy shit it was the best decision of my entire osu carreer, i was stagnated at rank 200k for about 2 months before that and now im rank 180k, feelsgoodman
Also i COMPLETELY lost my ability to read nomod so i started playing low star rating maps and dabbling in EZ and in about 3 days of that i got my reading back, so yeah dont hiperfocus LOL
Edit: I dont know if anyone else also feels this but whenever i play nomod i feel like i have to look at the circles more than the cursor while when i play hidden i feel like i need to look at the cursor instead of the circles
yooo tonehh is back
Ayyy my favourite osu creator is back
I made the mistake of starting to play DT at like 300k and now I'm 90k (still playing Dt, and streams from time to time) and now I can't play anything below ar10, It's just too slow for me.
I actually find myself playing a lot better on HR, so much so that nomod is harder than it for me where I’m comfortable now
TONEHH IS BACK YESSS
Okay so he says hidden at mid to high 4 star, im playing mid to high 2 star but prefer hidden with hidden i can play up to low 3star do i stop hidden?
Edit: i should also mention that its as i can see how many circles are on stacks and not feel rushed
if you like playing with hidden then you don’t need to stop playing with it!
Thanks for this. I feel like I ignored dt and hr way too much, and devoted wayyy too much time learning ez mod (like, half of my 2 year career now), in conjunction with nm and hd. Also, ez has completely killed my ability to read anything higher than ar 10, and while i knew high ar reading was pretty much brute force, i never got motivated enough. plus, i have like 0 finger control beyond 250 bpm
but thanks for reminding me to finally pick my shit up and learn it :D
yo i know u
I’m around rank 440k but I’ve basically hit a wall where I can’t fc anything even if I want to (my accuracy isn’t that good either) i want to improve but like I don’t even know what to do at this point
babe wake up new tonehh vid
How do i fix early tapping while playing hidden 😭
Finally!!!!!!!!!!!! long awaited new upload
If you select a mod and you have fun, you should play it. Simple as that.
im really bad at the game still and it's my 7th year of osu. Ive tried these forms of advice for years and still cant seem to overcome this skill wall I have been stuck at the 20-30k range for over 4 years!
i am completely unable to play hidden, but i somehow have a lot of flashlight topplays
Bruh i really became a nomod player after playing mods the entire time ive played
How to learn EZ?
Good video. Tho i Slept from 4:21. 10/10 better than asmr
Babe wake up Tonehh just uploaded
5:52 skin?
as a mid 6 digit i dont really know what i am doing here, i was looking for learning HDDT, but i cant even FC 5 star maps, i think i should play with nomod more, and more and moar and mooooar
good idea
youre back lets gooooo
Puting first storm in consistency actually illegal xd
what anti chatter and filter should u use?
how can I get maps from this map pack?
edit:nevermind I found it
what map is at 2:29?
why is it that i can read 7 to 8* jumps easier with ar 10 than like ar 9.5
ar10 reduces the note density so it’s easier to process the patterns
I can't tap the 3 stack circle of 3 stars so I start using hidden since I get comfortable with 2 stars and it was surprisingly easy not recommended though
5:15 what map is this it sounds great
true, asian kung fu generation makes some banger songs. this one is called After Dark, the map set is linked here:

Return of the king
What about ez?
Yo i needed this
"Hidden dosent have diminishing returns despite being one tricked "
I tried joining a 6digit local tourna i was 160k and a HD one trick i got obliterated
8:55 game name? pls
ur back nice
YOU DONT LEARN HIDDEN EVER.
I main HD free 1.06x play it like no mod
i’ve been playing with hidden since i couldn’t even fc a 3*, i’ve learned hidden pretty well
@@hermes3717 coming back 2 years later to say hidden is lame
@@Ellie_2810is free pp
9:00 What game is it?
Been a while 😁
anyone know skin at 2:31
Idk why but i cant play hd alone i always need dt or hr for it
HDDT and HDHR is easier to read with the higher approach rate, it kind of removes the difficulty of hidden realistically
HT EZ when?
