- “I think it’s important for us [Samoans] to continue the legacy of living, working and maintaining a presence in Central Auckland because of the strong Pasifika history in this area.” Subscribe to Re: bit.ly/subscrib...
Where Sāmoans go, the tradition of tatau will follow. Working from her family home studio in Grey Lynn, renowned tatau practitioner Tyla Vaeau marks Ana of the Tele family weaving two stories of aiga, identity and fa’a Sāmoa.
In 1971, 45 percent of Auckland’s Pasifika population lived in the inner-city. Now, they’re fewer than 2 per cent.
Through the eyes of Pacific youth and their families, this four part docu-series celebrates the small but mighty Pasifika community in inner-city Auckland who have remained despite decades of rampant gentrification.
Each episode weaves intergenerational stories of family, community and culture dispelling the myth that “all the Islanders have left.”

Thank you so much for making this documentary and sharing this beautiful story. I'm a third year apprentice with indonesian and Suriname ancestor lines based in Rotterdam with a big passion for various tribal styles. Seeing this documentary learns me a lot about the Samoan culture viewed from the female perspective. As well seen from the one who receive as well from the tattoo artist. It is absolutely refreshing to see and highly important to share it. Thank you for inspiring me. Warm regards, Kim
Thanks for sharing. I’m a Wiradjuri (Aboriginal) woman and my son’s father is Samoan (So’e & McFarland aiga) I encourage my son to learn and take pride in his culture 🇼🇸🇦🇺🖤💛❤️
My grandmother is Christina McFarland. Her father was Charles McFarland, he was Scottish, her mother Fa'asalusalu :)

So interesting to hear about the similarities and differences to tā moko. If you are not Samoan, you know about it, you see it, but it isn't something you can easily learn a whole lot about. This documentary is really special.

Beautiful story 👍🏽🙏🏽❤️I got my tualima done by Tyla in Dec 2019 when she was up at Karanga Ink. Some of the designs of my own malu that I received that same year in Jan 2019 in Samoa by Suluape Peter Su'a were incorporated into my tualima. She's awesome Tyla GB and all the best. Proud first generation NZ born Samoan 🙏🏽❤️🇼🇸🇦🇸

It's time to leave these old ways in the past. They have no meaning, find real meaning fam
@Supa Dupa It's time to live in modern times. Stop living in these ancient times. Come to the now... It's 2022 and soon it'll be 2030 and then so on. The ways of these ancient methods are done with, they contribute no growth to modern day times. The old ways is nothing but a clown of act for self pride and entertainment which is ignorant
@Supa Dupa to have pride, one must have ignorance. Pride is born out of ignorance. A person with pride won't stand insults and only ignorant people get offended...
Stop wishing for a time that will never come. Understand that you are the condition of your accumulated knowledge and experiences of your up bringing. That up bringing has deceived you, your living in a deception. Please come back as a human being and understand that your conditioning is no different from any other civilization in the world. YOU ARE SEPERATING YOURSELF FROM YOUR INNER BEING BY IDENTIFYING WITH SOMETHING THAT IS NEVER SO.
You do this, you'll live a happier and joyful life...
Stop going in and out of anger. Happy then angry and so on within the battlefield of your emotions
Go be

How's about you salapu your mouth with the lapisi coming out of it, if people want to stick to the old traditional proper ways of tatau let them be out of pride and respect for their craft that has been passed down from generation to generation.
She is doing a good job but if ever I or anyone our family considered getting a tattoo it would not be from her end of story.
