Climbing breaks those molds. Magnus is a lead climbing specialist. That type of roped climbing is constant strength and endurance training. It builds both consistently. However, climbing training from childhood is key. You can build muscle without lactic acid buildup problems.
Years of conditioning in climbing builds so much more than muscle, it strengthens the connective tissues and significantly increases muscle recruitment and activation. There are very few "strict forms" in climbing. Every move when you climb is a compound movement, and almost always different.
The biggest takeaway is Magnus is natural. If you factor in bodyweight, Magnus is vastly stronger than most steroid using power athletes. Very impressive.

@@dawidzarnowski5248 I don't think he has talked about them but even from his youth he was already super lean. Even now he is eating without reserve and is still leaner than 95% of gym goers. People have to understand that even though he didn't do any gym weight training he has been rock climbing for decades and they aren't an hour a day thing. He is lifting his body for hours multiple times a week.

Him and his sister are both incredibly strong climbers who have trained their entire lives. He has said that he struggled with the weight/eating aspect of it in the past which is a far more common issue in climbing but he clearly doesn't now. Again, he just has no incentive to do so. He's just a content creator and businessman now.
Worth noting that Magnus is insanely strong even for the average top level climber. Some top level climbers relly more on positioning/momentum/flexibility etc. or just specialize in climbing stuff that dosen't require as much strength. He is for sure on the very top end of power for climbers!
Magnus himself well tell you that he is not particularly strong for a top level climbers, and that he is not particularly strong compared to when he was training seriously and at his strongest. He just happens to be the only top level climber making this kind of content. If anything what really separates Magnus from other top level climbers is his pinch strength, Some of these guys can crank out reps of perfect form one arm front levers, do weighted pull-ups with more weight, have stronger fingers, etc. We know this factually just based on Magnus being tested by Lattice Training and being fairly mid level compared to the current top climbers, coming with the strength metrics that would indicate he can boulder around v13, which is coincidently his hardest boulder grade sent. For example, comparing Magnus to someone of equal body weight like Will Bosi, Magnus was pulling 104% bodyweight half crimp one handed for finger strength tests, where as someone like Will, who boulders v17 was pulling 124% bodyweight. Then you have some bigger top climbers like Jimmy Webb who boulders v16, and is 170lb, and would be dramatically stronger than Magnus just not just in terms of pure strength, but also stronger pound for pound. Magnus has made a few videos with some of the really top climbers just to showcase the difference. It's amazing how strong people can get. That takes absolutely nothing away from Magnus, who is amazing and freakishly strong. It's hard to image BUT there are climbers out there that are his size, and 20% stronger than him.
@shawnington yeah suee there are some, but the vast majority aren't that strong. Most international level comp boulderers can't do a one arm pull up. Most high level climbers specialize in a style. You cherry picked two elite (not just top level, but elite) climbers to prove that magnus isn't as strong? I'm not even tlakijg about finger metrics, which ofc he will be lacking a. retirement and b. He was never a boulderer anyway, but a lead climber so he won't have as high overall finger strength as someone who needs to do a v15 boulder move. I was talking about muscle groups; ability to pull, explosiveness, relative strength etc. Which he undeniably has more than others. Elite 100%. We talking top 10 in the world maybe. Im even untrained and almost can take the national record deadlift in 66kg class raw. Im consider around elite. And not even trained.I tried some times then weeks in between. So he be Elite in elite im guessing
@@mrfeelgood992 i took 200kg when tired. Stiff bar. I did not have the white stuff on hands. I'm guessing I'm around 220 kg stiff bar raw. National record is 250 in around my weight class. I'm around 70 kg. So if i go down 2 kg I'm in 66kg class maybe. I'm untrained tho. I'm very explosive. So i use momentum in the conventional deadlift. I hope to find motivation to start training

It never ceases to amaze me how much strength you can build without adding mass if that is your goal. Like Magnus obviously has been training most of his life to optimize his pulling strength to weight ratio, but it's still just completely mindblowing to see him outlift guys that have such an absurd amount of muscle compared to him.
a lot of rock climbers train for strength while still maintaining a light bodyweight as it is an advantage to be smaller to climb. they seem small in size but are incredibly strong and lean looking
@@maybememory1 It can in a way. People like Magnus will never beat proper weightlifters/strongmen in lifting the heaviest rock or really most total weight exercises. But relative strength is probably way more useful in day to day life and I'd venture healthier as well for your joints.(not a doctor or sports scientist though)
I love this. Guys of totally different sizes and abilities who are equally in awe of and respectful towards one another. It's because of Larry, Juji, Magnus and others that I went from a nerdy sack of fat with an exercise and athlete aversion to passively interested in fitness to now having a regular weightlifting routine and dietary plan of my own. A bit late as I'm almost 40, but better late than never. I have no competitive aspirations, but if I can get to the point where I don't feel as bad as I did at 35 again until I'm 65+, then I'll be happy. Lots of thanks to Larry and everyone else for helping me get motivated to get off my ass and out of the snack aisle at the store.
I am over 40, and these three guys are a reminder to me that I should keep trying. Just moving is the goal. You're doing awesome no matter what, most people ignore their body and then it just starts falling apart. Just moving with something makes all the difference. Great work out there :)
just keep in mind that it's only a race against yourself, but don't punish your older self for not doing things on time, cherish what you're doing now, and how constant you are in this moment to achieve what you desire. I'm 32, never done a sport consistently in my life, but fortunately have a decent natural bodyshape, but these guys always get me on track to pick up my dumbells and return to workout.
I'm the same age. You should watch renessance periodization. At our age we don't want to be lifting heavy and doing high reps. Lift the lightest weight possible the most difficult way possible. Can't be spending 2 hours in the gym like these high schoolers.

Climbers and any vertical pulling centric activity, be it body weight or weighted is always going to be like manual labor mechanics and grip strength, pronation and forearm centric activity. It's all they do, all day. It's as natural to them as chimps walking on their hands and swinging branch to branch.

The average age of World’s Strongest Man is 29 years and seven months. The average for the three strength sports is 30 years and two months.
I like Magnus' viewpoint about how you need to really love something in order to be excellent at it. It's easy for people to say things like "you're not good because you don't put in the work," but there's another side to it that you need to remember, which is that the people who put in more work just like doing it and want to do it. So it's a little less of a proposition about who is more disciplined and more about who is there for the love vs. for the fame, money, etc. Because the worse person might actually be more disciplined, they have to put in more of the mentally taxing energy of doing something that they don't love, but they get lower output than someone who feels an internal compulsion to participate.

magnus is so strong because he was a legit top level athlete in a sport all about strength to weight. He didn't work on growing tissue but instead maximizing tissue as much as he could.

The only reason why Magnus have not beat them in the first exercise as well, is because you have to use legs a lot to stabilize the movement. Legs are Magnus weakness. However, rest were engaging mostly upper body, and you can see the difference in strength pound for pound between them all three guys. Magnus is on another level (and only natural in there lmao).
first excercise was not legs lol, it was more of like back muscle, maybe good for rock climbing but magnus has bad posture for doing weights especially lifting, he would brake hes back in no time if he doesnt activate the lower back muscles.. lower back muscles as in like your waist, throughout the video you can compare magnus to the other 2 and watch the arc on the lower back(inward curve vs outward curve), the bodybuilders have the lower back muscle activated, its like a tree trunk that is strong all the way up from all the way down vs magnus whoes tree trunk(spine) is weak between waist-mid back.
@@TheHuskyFamily Do you actually train ? Rowing like that requires a lot of legs to stabilize your whole body. If you have weak legs, you have to overcompensate with the rest of your body, he could do much better in that exercise if he would work on his legs more.
Yes. You can see in the first pull from the ground that Magnus's legs, and more importantly hips, are not strong enough to stabilize for this movement. Barbell row requires a decent amount of isometric hip hinge strength.
Yes, but also another big factor is physics. Magnus weigh 160lbs the bar was significantly heavier at 225lbs. He has to fight that much more to maintain the weight shift.

Maybe with endurance, but it was clear that with heavy weight he was very far from their strength as demonstrated in the barbell row, but that's to be expected. He's 160 pounds, and very strong for his weight. I have seen him do pull ups and climb, and I knew he would be strong in these kinds of exercises.
Magnus is a pound for pound beast, but it's really not that crazy at all when you really think about it. At that point, it was more about muscular endurance than strength. And if there's anything Magnus has no shortage of, it's endurance. In fact, I would hope a climber would have the edge over bodybuilders in endurance because his sport actually depends on it and that can save his life.
Naw you are wrong, 120+ kg is just too much for his lower back, that is why he failed the row, he couldn't hold form, it was nothing to do with his upper back strength reaching any sort of limit, that is his limit in almost every video he makes. Big muscles typically have much more endurance capabilities rather than strength, due to glycogen stores, the opposite of your hypothesis.

In no sport whatsoever, be it strength related or otherwise have I witnessed the larger mass being to an advantage of endurance. Larger muscles require much more oxygen, thus resulting in a need for heavier less controlled breathing which saps endurance. It's the reason why much larger muscled athletes tend to visibly gas sooner than smaller framed more marathon built physiques.

Magnus strenght is superhuman. To think that the more you do theses machines, the more you are able to pull just because you get used to it, and he goes there for the first time and pulls more than Larry and Juji.

In the pull-down he did a few more reps than Juji based on the "strict form criteria" they were following and one rep more than Larry. Pound for pound is that incredibly impressive for someone who typically doesn't train that? Sure. Magnus is a beast. But to say he pulled more, connotes he did and could lift more than them, which he certainly cannot. Not in absolute strength, anyway. And there's no shame in that. I just notice people too often read too much into reps. Reps are great for building volume, endurance and hypertrophy but it's a long-standing gym myth that they are the definition of "strength." Logically, in theory, is your rep out max supposed to be higher, the bigger your 1 or 2 rep max is? Usually, but not always, because not everyone trains for that.

I've been climbing for a while now and have come to learn how humbling this sport is. I'm pretty strong for my age but it's just plain weird to see someone with (way) less muscle than yourself be that much stronger and climb many grades higher using the same technique. It's a sport where you develop such stength with minimal changes to appearances.
yeah it's all those micro muscles between the larger muscles that finally get worked out. My first month of climbing was brutal. I was using muscles I didn't even know you could use lol.

Magnus deadlifting 102kg (225lbs) which is 1.5x his body weight is crazy by itself and then he does 3 repetitions of barbell row and after that he deadlifts 124kg (275lbs) which is almost 2x his bodyweight. He's insanely strong 😲
It's really not crazy i think magnus Can deadlift over 250kg with his strengh and with a right technique, i was able to deadlift 100kg AT 16 while i was 66kgs for 185cm so
One of the best examples of the difference between lifting to simply look big and actually doing something that builds strength. Why anyone would want to be big and inflexible is crazy to me. I'd rather be the guy that doesn't look strong but is super strong and athletic every time. Add in to this that Magnus has probably never cycled the juice like these guys and it is a great reason to never ever take the gear. Just be consistent and work hard for years and you can have a great body with amazing strength!

Not true, everyone who trains in a gym know how crazy sto g back rock climbers are, I'm 235 pound, compete in powerlifting, when we do pull downs I'm as strong g as a 170 pound rock climber, not magnus, he is not the normal rock climber

No offense to Larry and Juju, but this convinced me how much better rock climbing is for you as a sport than body building or power lifting. They both have backne, while magnus is natural, and way stronger per pound.
He's a freak athlete. I heard him speak about never having been injured, that's extremely rare for a climber. Almost 100% of climbers eventually get a finger, or elbow or shoulder injury. The guy has incredible genetics.
Genetics play a factor as Magnus is a freak of nature, but there is no doubt that climbing might be better for the average person, atleast strength wise
This video reminds me a lot of when seeing older Bruce Lee videos with strength with Magnus. Magnus has maxed out his muscles for what they need to do, insanely strong for his build and people spoke of Bruce Lee in the past for the same thing. Really impressive

We're just seeing his strength here, we're also seeing power endurance. Magnus has not only trained to be able to pull really hard, but also to pull hard repeatedly for a long time. If I remember correctly, in the Lattice evaulation his power endurance was high even compared to other elite climbers. It really showed in that last exercise as he was blasting out reps.
I always found it strange growing up in combat sports that there were guys who were super fit triathletes or marathon runner who would gas in 1 round. Or super strong guys who can't hit hard. Your body just adapts so well to what you're doing regularly.

Magnus himself well tell you that he is not particularly strong for a top level climbers, and that he is not particularly strong compared to when he was training seriously and at his strongest. He just happens to be the only top level climber making this kind of content. If anything what really separates Magnus from other top level climbers is his pinch strength,
Some of these guys can crank out reps of perfect form one arm front levers, do weighted pull-ups with more weight, have stronger fingers, etc. We know this factually just based on Magnus being tested by Lattice Training and being fairly mid level compared to the current top climbers, coming with the strength metrics that would indicate he can boulder around v13, which is coincidently his hardest boulder grade sent.
For example, comparing Magnus to someone of equal body weight like Will Bosi, Magnus was pulling 104% bodyweight half crimp one handed for finger strength tests, where as someone like Will, who boulders v17 was pulling 124% bodyweight.
Then you have some bigger top climbers like Jimmy Webb who boulders v16, and is 170lb, and would be dramatically stronger than Magnus just not just in terms of pure strength, but also stronger pound for pound.
Magnus has made a few videos with some of the really top climbers just to showcase the difference. It's amazing how strong people can get.
That takes absolutely nothing away from Magnus, who is amazing and freakishly strong. It's hard to image BUT there are climbers out there that are his size, and 20% stronger than him.

You cherry picked two elite (not just top level, but elite) climbers to prove that magnus isn't as strong? I'm not even tlakijg about finger metrics, which ofc he will be lacking a. retirement and b. He was never a boulderer anyway, but a lead climber so he won't have as high overall finger strength as someone who needs to do a v15 boulder move. I'm around 70 kg. So if i go down 2 kg I'm in 66kg class maybe. I'm untrained tho. I'm very explosive. So i use momentum in the conventional deadlift. I hope to find motivation to start training

It never ceases to amaze me how much strength you can build without adding mass if that is your goal. Like Magnus obviously has been training most of his life to optimize his pulling strength to weight ratio, but it's still just completely mindblowing to see him outlift guys that have such an absurd amount of muscle compared to him.

a lot of rock climbers train for strength while still maintaining a light bodyweight as it is an advantage to be smaller to climb. they seem small in size but are incredibly strong and lean looking

@@maybememory1 It can in a way. People like Magnus will never beat proper weightlifters/strongmen in lifting the heaviest rock or really most total weight exercises. But relative strength is probably way more useful in day to day life and I'd venture healthier as well for your joints.(not a doctor or sports scientist though)

I love this. Guys of totally different sizes and abilities who are equally in awe of and respectful towards one another. It's because of Larry, Juji, Magnus and others that I went from a nerdy sack of fat with an exercise and athlete aversion to passively interested in fitness to now having a regular weightlifting routine and dietary plan of my own. A bit late as I'm almost 40, but better late than never. I have no competitive aspirations, but if I can get to the point where I don't feel as bad as I did at 35 again until I'm 65+, then I'll be happy. Lots of thanks to Larry and everyone else for helping me get motivated to get off my ass and out of the snack aisle at the store.

I'm 32, never done a sport consistently in my life, but fortunately have a decent natural bodyshape, but these guys always get me on track to pick up my dumbells and return to workout.
I'm the same age. You should watch renessance periodization. At our age we don't want to be lifting heavy and doing high reps. Lift the lightest weight possible the most difficult way possible. Can't be spending 2 hours in the gym like these high schoolers.

I like Magnus' viewpoint about how you need to really love something in order to be excellent at it. It's easy for people to say things like "you're not good because you don't put in the work," but there's another side to it that you need to remember, which is that the people who put in more work just like doing it and want to do it. So it's a little less of a proposition about who is more disciplined and more about who is there for the love vs. for the fame, money, etc. Because the worse person might actually be more disciplined, they have to put in more of the mentally taxing energy of doing something that they don't love, but they get lower output than someone who feels an internal compulsion to participate.

magnus is so strong because he was a legit top level athlete in a sport all about strength to weight. He didn't work on growing tissue but instead maximizing tissue as much as he could.

The only reason why Magnus have not beat them in the first exercise as well, is because you have to use legs a lot to stabilize the movement. Legs are Magnus weakness. However, rest were engaging mostly upper body, and you can see the difference in strength pound for pound between them all three guys. Magnus is on another level (and only natural in there lmao).
first excercise was not legs lol, it was more of like back muscle, maybe good for rock climbing but magnus has bad posture for doing weights especially lifting, he would brake hes back in no time if he doesnt activate the lower back muscles.. lower back muscles as in like your waist, throughout the video you can compare magnus to the other 2 and watch the arc on the lower back(inward curve vs outward curve), the bodybuilders have the lower back muscle activated, its like a tree trunk that is strong all the way up from all the way down vs magnus whoes tree trunk(spine) is weak between waist-mid back.

Yes. You can see in the first pull from the ground that Magnus's legs, and more importantly hips, are not strong enough to stabilize for this movement. Barbell row requires a decent amount of isometric hip hinge strength.
Yes, but also another big factor is physics. Magnus weigh 160lbs the bar was significantly heavier at 225lbs. He has to fight that much more to maintain the weight shift.

It's crazy that Magnus struggled to actually hold himself down in the last exercise and yet beat Juji and Larry
Maybe with endurance, but it was clear that with heavy weight he was very far from their strength as demonstrated in the barbell row, but that's to be expected. He's 160 pounds, and very strong for his weight. I have seen him do pull ups and climb, and I knew he would be strong in these kinds of exercises.
Magnus is a pound for pound beast, but it's really not that crazy at all when you really think about it. At that point, it was more about muscular endurance than strength. And if there's anything Magnus has no shortage of, it's endurance. In fact, I would hope a climber would have the edge over bodybuilders in endurance because his sport actually depends on it and that can save his life.
Naw you are wrong, 120+ kg is just too much for his lower back, that is why he failed the row, he couldn't hold form, it was nothing to do with his upper back strength reaching any sort of limit, that is his limit in almost every video he makes.
Big muscles typically have much more endurance capabilities rather than strength, due to glycogen stores, the opposite of your hypothesis.

In no sport whatsoever, be it strength related or otherwise have I witnessed the larger mass being to an advantage of endurance. Larger muscles require much more oxygen, thus resulting in a need for heavier less controlled breathing which saps endurance. It's the reason why much larger muscled athletes tend to visibly gas sooner than smaller framed more marathon built physiques.

Magnus strenght is superhuman. To think that the more you do theses machines, the more you are able to pull just because you get used to it, and he goes there for the first time and pulls more than Larry and Juji.
Whoa there, cowboy. He didn't "pull more" than Larry or Juji, per se. In the pull-down he did a few more reps than Juji based on the "strict form criteria" they were following and one rep more than Larry. Pound for pound is that incredibly impressive for someone who typically doesn't train that? Sure. Magnus is a beast. But to say he pulled more, connotes he did and could lift more than them, which he certainly cannot. Not in absolute strength, anyway. And there's no shame in that. I just notice people too often read too much into reps. Reps are great for building volume, endurance and hypertrophy but it's a long-standing gym myth that they are the definition of "strength." Logically, in theory, is your rep out max supposed to be higher, the bigger your 1 or 2 rep max is? Usually, but not always, because not everyone trains for that.

I've been climbing for a while now and have come to learn how humbling this sport is. I'm pretty strong for my age but it's just plain weird to see someone with (way) less muscle than yourself be that much stronger and climb many grades higher using the same technique. It's a sport where you develop such stength with minimal changes to appearances.
yeah it's all those micro muscles between the larger muscles that finally get worked out. My first month of climbing was brutal. I was using muscles I didn't even know you could use lol.

Magnus deadlifting 102kg (225lbs) which is 1.5x his body weight is crazy by itself and then he does 3 repetitions of barbell row and after that he deadlifts 124kg (275lbs) which is almost 2x his bodyweight. He's insanely strong 😲
It's really not crazy i think magnus Can deadlift over 250kg with his strengh and with a right technique, i was able to deadlift 100kg AT 16 while i was 66kgs for 185cm so

One of the best examples of the difference between lifting to simply look big and actually doing something that builds strength. Why anyone would want to be big and inflexible is crazy to me. I'd rather be the guy that doesn't look strong but is super strong and athletic every time. Add in to this that Magnus has probably never cycled the juice like these guys and it is a great reason to never ever take the gear. Just be consistent and work hard for years and you can have a great body with amazing strength!

Not true, everyone who trains in a gym know how crazy sto g back rock climbers are, I'm 235 pound, compete in powerlifting, when we do pull downs I'm as strong g as a 170 pound rock climber, not magnus, he is not the normal rock climber
it actually looks like magnus is breaking the laws of physics on some of those lifts lol

No offense to Larry and Juju, but this convinced me how much better rock climbing is for you as a sport than body building or power lifting. They both have backne, while magnus is natural, and way stronger per pound.
He's a freak athlete. I heard him speak about never having been injured, that's extremely rare for a climber. Almost 100% of climbers eventually get a finger, or elbow or shoulder injury. The guy has incredible genetics.

Genetics play a factor as Magnus is a freak of nature, but there is no doubt that climbing might be better for the average person, atleast strength wise
No one ever claimed bodybuilding is a healthy sport. But it's their passion, doesn't really matter how much it hurts if you love it

This video reminds me a lot of when seeing older Bruce Lee videos with strength with Magnus. Magnus has maxed out his muscles for what they need to do, insanely strong for his build and people spoke of Bruce Lee in the past for the same thing. Really impressive

We're just seeing his strength here, we're also seeing power endurance. Magnus has not only trained to be able to pull really hard, but also to pull hard repeatedly for a long time. If I remember correctly, in the Lattice evaulation his power endurance was high even compared to other elite climbers. It really showed in that last exercise as he was blasting out reps.
It's honestly downright confusing how strong Magnus is.
I always found it strange growing up in combat sports that there were guys who were super fit triathletes or marathon runner who would gas in 1 round. Or super strong guys who can't hit hard.
Your body just adapts so well to what you're doing regularly.
